Getting iPhoto to reread EXIF info - force rebuild of Library.iPhoto6 file?
Hi all,
I'm a new Mac & iPhoto 6 user. I imported some photos from my camera into iPhoto. Then I realized that the timestamps on the photos were wrong - I had forgotten to change the time zone when I travelled.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way for iPhoto to add 16 hours to the timestamp for each photo.
So I used jhead to fix each photo's EXIF timestamp. (In both the Originals & Modified folders)
However, now I can't get iPhoto to reread the EXIF data from the photo. I assume that this data is stored in the Library.iPhoto6 file. I've tried just deleting the file & restarting iPhoto, but that doesn't work.
How can I force iPhoto to rebuild the Library.iPhoto6 file?
G4 Powerbook 15" Mac OS X (10.4.6) iLife 6
Thanks for your help, but I'm afraid that neither response solves the problem!
1. jhead can indeed batch change the date. I used it to change the timestamps on all of the photos in my Modified & Originals folders. I can also verify that the EXIF info in the files themselves has been updated.
2. Holding down command & option when you start iPhoto does indeed let you rebuild some of the internal information. Unfortunately, it does not solve this problem either. iPhoto does not rebuild its EXIF info in Library.iPhoto6 when you start it up in this fashion.
3. Deleting the Library.iPhoto6 file doesn't work. When iPhoto is started, it thinks that it doesn't have any photos. So you then have to reimport everything.
Is there no way to get iPhoto to rebuild that file? Reimporting everything would be extraordinarily tedious.
Cheers,
Andy

I just finished using iTunes, closed out and then tried to get ack in. Got this message "The iTunes library .9tl file is locked, on a locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file." How can I get back ino iTunes ?
I actually figured it out...I had to go to the iTunes Library Extras.itdb file and give myself permission to have full control. THEN, I could go and estore a previos version. Once I had done this, I got the same message for iTunes Library Genius.itdb . . . I did the same thing with it and Voila'!!
Hope this helps...

IPhoto not responding when trying to rebuild permissions library
I did the latest OS upgrade about a month ago now and nothing has been good with my iMac since.
Please help!!! iPhoto not responding during photo library permissions repair process. Cannot get access to 10 years of family photos. This process is systematically erasing my four childrens childhoods from my picture library.Seriously, how can anyone help you with that amount of information?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have. -

HT5085 Gathering Info About your iTunes Library - Keep getting Network error
I bought iTunes Match yesterday, and so far have not been able to use it.
It gets to Stage 1: Gathering Info About Your iTunes Library and makes progress, but right at the end an error box appears saying:
"We could not complete your iTunes request. The network connection was reset.
Make sure your network connection is active and try again"
Well I know the network connection is active as I was able to be charged for iTunes Match and have had no problems making other purchases. I went to Advance > Run Diagnostics Tests from Help in iTunes and ran the Network Connectivity Diagnostics and it reported no problems.
Now I know how much Apple hate giving back refunds, but if people can't help, does anyone know how I can get my money back? If I click "Report a Problem" it simply takes me to the help pages. I tried contacting support but I received an email saying they can't help.
I'm getting quite frustrated now, so I'm reaching out and hoping someone can help me?

I was simply saying how frustrating this has become, seeing how I have been trying on my own to figure this issue out for more then a month with no results. Like I said in the beginning, I have not used any other account to purchase apps or other products on my phone. I have only ever used one account. There are 23 apps that are saying they can't sync. It directs me to authorize the computer, which I do but it doesn't change the outcome. If I proceed, I lose those 23 apps correct? Do I also lose all my text messages saved, and other things such as documents in the "notes"?

IPhoto cuts EXIF info when eksporting ?
I've encountered a slight problem with iPhoto. It seems when i import a RAW picture (Nikon NEF file) directly into iPhoto from the SD card, and then drag/drop the picture from iPhoto to my desktop, iPhoto converts the picture from RAW to JPEG (which is fine) but it also cuts a lot of the EXIF information.
The RAW file has all the EXIF info before entering iPhoto and getting converted to JPEG - but somewhere along the line in iPhoto, a lot of the information is lost.
-Is this a well know 'feature' in iPhoto? Or am i exporting to jpeg in the wrong manner (if i want preserve all EXIF info)? The User Comment field in the Exif was designed for use with Tiff files and is deprecated now.
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/780507
Modern practise would expect to find that in the IPTC core data. "Aperature" (or Aperture as it's more commonly called) supports IPTC Core.
iPhoto never claimed access to all Exif or IPTC metadata. It's an app aimd squarely at the home user with a point and shoot camera

Any easy way to get EXIF info into the Description?
I'd like to use the Share feature in iPhoto '11 to ... well, share a bunch of photos, including their EXIF info in the Description. Out of the box it looks like the only way to do that is to hand-enter all that data, which is a PITA. Anyone know of an iPhoto plugin or other way to automate getting at least some of the EXIF data into the Description field?
I would have bet a great deal of money you'd go on to question why I was sharing on Facebook instead of elsewhere, even though that's wholly irrelevant to my question. How does my "explaining" it help answer my question?
For those not ignoring me and instead actually interested in being helpful rather than boosting their post count, the reason I'm sharing on Facebook is because that is where the group is based with whom I'm sharing the photos. The EXIF data isn't critical, just helpful. I'm not trying to share full-resolution photos for people to download and print but rather sample photos with various lenses and configurations to give a general idea about what said lenses or configurations do for the photo, and providing the EXIF info is helpful. Right now I'm entering it into the Description field manually, but given that the data is right there I was hoping someone else would have also seen this need and created a solution.
Anyone? -
EXIF info in Finder and iPhoto different
When I import pictures from my Canon Powershot Pro1, iPhoto has the correct exif info, but any other program, either finder or another program called "Name those files", uses faulty exif information, namely that the creation date of the file is the import date. I like to rename my files, including the original date it was taken, and I am not able to because of this glitch, although maybe I should rename in iPhoto. I don't know.
mevannorden:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's a contextual menu application, PhotoToolCM 2.0, that will batch rename the files to the EXIF date -0 YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpg. You can use it before importing into iPhoto. You can also use another renaming application, like R-Name to append the additional information to the file name. You will end up with a file name like this: YYYY-MM-DD-01-your info here.jpg
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Problem transferring white balance Exif info from iPhoto to Aperture
I originally posted this question on the Aperture discussions page, but it was suggested to me that maybe I should try asking it on the iPhoto page as well.
I want to transfer my iPhoto library over to Aperture, but am reluctant to do so until I have familiarised myself with the new program. (I have over 23,000 photos in iPhoto.)
As a start, I have imported a few of my recent photos from iPhoto so that I can find my way around Aperture. One thing puzzles me. I can see the white balance information for each photo in iPhoto but the white balance field is greyed out in the Aperture metadata, and there is no 'cloud' or 'sun' picture at the top right of the Info panel, even though the white balance field is ticked in the Metadata Fields panels for Exif Info and Camera Info. I really need to know which camera setting I used for each photo to help me learn how to take better photos, but as far as I can see the information is not available to me anywhere in Aperture.
I have performed Aperture Library First Aid (repaired permissions and database, and rebuilt database) but the problem still exists. At the suggestion of someone on the Aperture page I have also created a new Aperture library and then imported some original photos from iPhoto which I exported to the desktop and then into the new Aperture library. I had the same problem, with no white balance information showing. That's when I was advised to try the iPhoto discussions page as well!
Does anyone have any ideas for me please?Well, Terence, it duly showed up the white balance data when I shot a Raw photo. But I don't understand why Aperture recognises white balance for Raw but won't show it for Jpegs, whereas iPhoto recognises both.

I want to download the new updates I think to the 10.9 but our mac was given to us and when it comes to the last page it asks for the user name and password but this mac was wiped clean. How do I find out this info so I can get iPhoto? To be honest I'm not even sure what type of Mac I have and don't know how to find out what kind it is
I'd also like to make address labels and don't know where to find that eitherYou would make address lables with the Contacts app.
If you don't have the user name and password used to set up the machine then you need to purchase the apps for yourself. -
Is there anything I can do on my own to get this fixed? I have tried shutting down and restarting and it does not help.
It recommends rebuilding the library, but says backup everything first. I can't get into it to back anything up"
It is recommending backing up your entire system or have a current Time Machine Back up which includes your iPhoto
Then rebuild your iPhoto library as recommended:
hold the Command and Option keys down during the complete launch of iPhoto. -
Upgraded to Mavericks and installed new iphoto but can't get iphoto to work
I have not been able to open my iphoto library with the current version after installing Mavericks and purchasing/installing iphoto 9.5
Here's the system info: iMac (from Dec. 2007)
2.8 GHz Core duo
4 GB SDRAM
OS X 10.9.1 (as of yesterday)
Iphoto 08 (7.1.5) lived on a network drive ( Lacie cloud drive) shared between a pc and a mac.
Upgraded to 9.5 yesterday
I used time machine backup before installing Mavericks and proceeded to try to upgrade iphoto. However, I did not make a backup of my system after this installation and before I installed the new iphoto. Does Time machine backup iphoto files located on a network drive? Does it matter that the backup was made with snow leopard and not Mavericks?
I followed instructions on a thread indicating that iphoto Library upgrader 1.1 should be used to prepare my old library prior to opening with iphoto 9.5.
When I double-clicked the upgrader it gave me this message:
Your library can open with the current version of iPhoto and does not need to be prepared with this tool.
I noticed that the iphoto icon has already changed from orange to blue.
OK- great! So I go to the freshly installed iphoto and try to open my library and get this message:
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
Alright, so I click the upgrade button and I get the beachball of death for about 15 minutes and then see a message that says:
Examining photo library- Examining with the beachball of death goes on for another 10 minutes and then iphoto just crashes and closes.
Back to searching through threads- Ah- try option + cmd while opening iphoto to rebuild the database but then get this message AGAIN:
The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.
Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of iPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries may take an hour or more to complete.
And so, the cycle continues....
After reading through a few other discussion I discovered that the iphoto library should have been on a drive formated as Mac OS extended (journaled)
So- I format an external harddrive as Mac OS extended (journaled) and proceed to copy the iphoto library (234 GB) onto the external harddrive and after about 30 minutes I received this message:
The operation can’t be completed because an item with the name “iPhoto Library” already exists. I click OK and everything stops and shuts down.
Is it possible to get rid of Mavericks and go back to my original iphoto 08 using the time machine backup? If so, should I then use the upgrader before installing Mavericks and the new iphoto?
At this point I have no clue how to proceed. I am trying not to panic but this process is starting to drive me a little bananas and my brain is slowly, but surely, melting away.
Please help save my sanity. Please.
Thank you.The problem is the library has been damaged from sitting on the Network Drive, and frankly, returning to the old OS won't change anything, nor will downgrading iPhoto. You're going to have this issue once you try and move the Library, or update it in any way, and - even if you stick with the old version of iPhoto, you're going to start having issues just saving edits, sharing and so on.
So, you're between a rock and a hard place.
I've no idea if TM backs up material on a NAS, but I do know that it can be set to back up externald rives. I'm somewhat surprised that you don't know, as this is your back up system that you created and the easiest route out of this situation. NOw there's only one way to find out.
So, my first effort would be to try restore the Library from TM to the correctly formatted drive:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
will help with that.
If that doesn't work or is not possible, your next effort is to try rebuild the Library to the correctly formatted drive:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If that doesn't work, then you're recovering the masters from the Library and starting over from scratch. -
IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.
iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again. I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5
The log for my error is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result. -
Can't get iphoto to work after tampering with library in Finder
I think I made a big mistake when I tampered with the iphoto library in Pictures in Finder.
Now I can't get iphoto to work. All the pictures are gone in iphoto, the spaces are there but they are blank.
When I open iphoto it goes into the mode (little spinning wheel appears) where I have to "force quit".
Any supggestions on what I can do? Thanks. The list that shows is just data files and such.
You can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder.
You can burn each Year folder or any other variation.
This is my workflow. The reason I do it the way I describe is because I want a backup of just the photos and video clips I take so I can copy them to a partition of my external drive and burn them to disc. On the other partition I backup my entire users folder
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.
Here is info on backing up your photos:
Backing up your iPhoto Library
1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use a DVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
The easiest way to burn an iPhoto Library folder in the Finder that is larger than 4.7 gig to fit on one DVD is to burn sections of the folder.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Double click the folder to open it.
Drag each Year folder to the desktop.
You should be left with the iPhoto Library folder containing all the data files, and the Year folders.
Combine whatever year folders that amount closest to a DVD burn size on one DVD. Make sure that you have burned all the Year folders, then the iPhoto Library folder with all the data files.
If you ever need to use this backup, insert the DVDs into your computer and copy the folders to the desktop. Put all the Year folders back into the iPhoto Library folder. Then put the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder.
You can also check out applications for disc spanning:
Disc-spanning software
DropDMG
Toast
Dragon Burn 4
BackityMac
Retrospect Express-comes with some external drives
Retrospect for Macintosh Desktop Edition
2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.
3. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to your iPod in disk mode
4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.
If you just want to backup the images in your library:
1) Within iPhoto select the images, albums or rolls you want to backup. Go to Share>Export and export them to a newly created folder on the desktop. Follow the directions in the next link.
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
1.. If you backed up the entire iPhoto Library by burning within iPhoto or burning the folder in the Finder, make sure the burned copy is a good working copy before you delete the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. You delete the iPhoto Library in the finder by dragging it to the trash when iPhoto is closed. When you next launch iPhoto it will create a new empty library for you to start anew.
2. If you burned just the images, be aware that that is all you are archiving. No metadata will travel with the images such as comments, keywords, etc.
You can then delete those images within iPhoto by highlighting them and hitting the delete key, then empty iPhoto's trash. Do this often and in groups so iPhoto will not choke on too many images. -
IPhoto 8.1.2 - Rebuilding Photo Library - Photo Library is unreadable
Hi,
I am using iPhoto 8.1.2 and have had no issues with iPhoto for many years. However, when I tried to access iPhoto yesterday I obtained the following message:
"You can’t open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto. QUIT"
I then tried to restart and re-install the iPhoto 8.1.2 update. Afterwards I got the following message:
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. QUIT"
I backed up my photo library and went ahead and restarted the computer again and then proceeded to try and rebuild my photo library. After looking at several discussion threads in this forum, I hoped for the best and checked the following boxes:
- Rebuild the photos' small thumbnails
- Rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails
- Recover orphaned photos in the iPhoto library folder
- Examine and repair iPhoto library file permissions
- Rebuild the iPhoto library database from automatic backup
It took a long time, however in the end it seems like iPhoto was once again able to access my photos. However, there are 3 things that make me feel concerned:
(1) I don't think all my photos were present. Originally, if I am not mistaken, there were around 22,000 photos and now only 20,000 are present.
(2) During the process of rebuilding the library, iPhoto gobbled up another 5GB of hard disk space. I don't know why, but I think iPhoto might have doubled at least some of my photos.
(3) Afterwards it seemed like iPhoto froze during "building thumbnails" (the blue bar was about 80-90% complete) - possibly because of lack of hard disk space - and after letting it work over night, I decided to force quit iPhoto this morning.
I then decided to throw away the new "rebuilt library" because of the missing photos and the extra 5GB. After throwing the library away, I placed once again my previous backed up photo library in the pictures folder. So, essentially (I think), I am back to square one.
I would appreciate any help and advice on what I should do. I am afraid of doing the wrong thing and irremediably doing damage to my photos and photo library.
Thank you in advance.Hi TD,
Thank you for your quick reply and support.
My HD has a capacity of about 320GB. When I received the error message I had about 24 GB free space. The actual Photo Library is about 19GB in size.
I did the back up on my hard disk, after duplicating the Photo Library I had about 5 GB left over space during the Photo Library Rebuild.
However, after I did the rebuild, the Photo Library size jumped up to over 24GB! Leaving me with only 100MB of HD space left, at this point the thumbnail rebuild seemed to stall. This is when I decided to eventually force quit iPhoto.
Now that I have thrown away the bloated Photo Library and returned to the original one, I am back at about 25GB free space.
I think I know the source of my issue, I don't know if this will help you in advising me on how to get myself out of this mess. I foolishly did a clean up of my hard disk with a clean up / space freeing program. I think one of the little files that was accidentally cleaned up was linked to / related to my iPhoto library.
Thanks for the link to iPhoto Library Manager. I realize that this is definitely an option, but if possible for me only as a last resort (I would like to keep all the books, and calendars data, etc. if possible).
Are there any other solutions? Why did iPhoto double some photos during the rebuild? Why did my Photo Library bloat up in size during the rebuild?
Did I check too many check boxes? Can I attempt another rebuild and if so, what can I do to do it properly?
Thank you again for your help.
