Getting iPod to recongnize new iTunes on PC

I recently lost everything when my Hard Drive crashed and then fried. When I got my new Hard Drive, I had to reinstall iTunes, which in turn meant that I lost all my purchased songs and those I have taken the hours to import into it.
Also I cannot get my iPod to allow me to take those songs from the iPod and put them back into iTunes, which would be a way to save what I have lost. Is there any way to avoid iTunes from erasing what is already on my iPod and get those songs imported into iTunes.
Please help!

You're right that iTunes will not let you copy your songs from the iPod back to you computer.
You have to use a third-party utility like iPod Rip or senuti (iTunes backwards) to do this. Do a google search and you should find them.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year. It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you. How do I get music onto my ipod with the new itunes?

I have a new ipod, and the new itunes. I cant find any itunes version information, but it downloaded on the 27/9/13
The old itunes showed your library and ipod icons on the left, and I could simply drag music onto the ipod icon.
With the new itunes, there is no ipod icon to drag music too. I certainly dont want to put all my music onto ipod, or have it pick songs randomly. I have way too much music for itunes, I basically drag some albums to itunes, copy them to the ipod, then delete them from itunes. I have to do this for 2 reasons, one is that my music is spread over various places, and usually when you plug in an external drive it gives it a different letter, so you "lose" music, and secondly because much of my music doesnt have correct tags because I ripped it from my CDs before there was internet databases (yes I’m old).
Any ideas how I get an album from a HD onto my ipod?
Does anyone else find itunes inexplicably unintuitive?

Show Sidebar - Choose View > Show Sidebar (this feature will display iTunes features on the left side of the application including Library, Store, Shared, Genius, and Playlists).

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases

How do i get all the content of my iPod on a new itunes.

My old computer died on me and i bought a new laptop.
I downloaded the newest iTunes (10.1.1) on it, so now i have a new iTunes and it's not accepting my iPod. I don't want to synchronise my iPod to the new iTunes for in that case i will loose everything on my iPod.

Some of the tools linked to will only work if the iPod has a valid library. Others can scan the drive independently and some may even be able to rebuild a damaged library. The manual method towards the end should be able to recover your media regardless of the state of the library.

Do you mean remove them from the iPod or transfer them back to your computer? You can't transfer photo's back to the computer with iTunes. To retrieve photos from an iPod try:
iPodPhotoCopy Windows only

iPod Photo Liberator Mac & Windows
To remove individual photos from an iPod you delete or remove the photo from the folder that you linked to when you set the preference "synch photos from" and update the iPod. For example, if the iPod is getting the pictures from the folder "My Pictures," delete or remove them from My Pictures.

It is very simple. Just take a USB flash drive and plug it into your usb port. Then just copy paste all of your songs into it from your old comp. and stick the USB in your new comp. Copy the files onto your desktop and then go to your new iTunes click FILE, ADD FOLDER, and find the folder from your desktop on your new comp. very simple.

If you purchased all songs in the iTunes Store, plug your iPod to your Mac or PC and iTunes will ask you to transfer purchases.
