Getting kicked off of VNC connection when logging into server

We have noticed that when we log into the VNC server, and sign into the console of the server, that we get kicked off of the VNC connection. If we wait a few seconds then connect again we get the desktop of the server.
What is causing this? I use JollysFastVNC 0.98.50 (928701) and a coworker of mine uses ChickenoftheVNC, both are on Macs. It is very annoying. I do like that when I'm done and I log off of the console that it also logs me out of the VNC connection. But kicking me out for logging in is absurd.
Thanks,
Ben
PS. The server is Mac OS X 10.6.1 on a Mac Mini last generation, since they just came out with a new one.

I linked to the free client. That is what runs on the computer that you you turn on in System Preferences --> Sharing, so you are going to want to install that on the server, not the machine you are connecting from. If you installed it on both it doesn't matter—it was there anyway as part of the OS. It is built into the OS, but a reinstall can fix problems and makes sure you have the latest version. The ARD application is what you would use to connect with from the machine you are sitting in front of. That is what costs money. Apple calling the software "client" can be confusing.
Have you turned on the VNC option under either Screen Sharing or Remote Management. You will need that to connect with a third party VNC app like JollysFastVNC or Tight. If you don't turn that on then the built in Screen Sharing app should just work (accessible from Safari or the Connect to Server dialog in finder by typing vnc://ipofserver)
It is hard to say if this is a SL bug, or a problem on your network since you only have one machine to test. You could try running Vine Server on your server. You will want to change it's port to something else like 5901, or at least turn off Screen Sharing so it doesn't conflict ports. If you change the port you would connect by typing vnc://ipofserver:5901
In Vine be sure to use System Server (under Server menu) to keep vine running all the time, even after a reboot.

  • Randomly getting kicked off my AX connection, why?

like the title says... i really don't know whats causing it. does it need to be plugged in with nothing else plugged into the socket?? right now i have it behind this little shelf that my printer sits on, the printer is also plugged into the same outlet. is that causing it? this is my second airport express already, this is a replacement unit they sent me. i have interference robustness on as well and still getting kicked. sometimes ill get kicked and then it wont even connect back right away. it doesnt help that im colorblind and have no ******* idea what the color lights mean. someone help... : (

I have an Xtreme hub that's a couple of years old, unlike the original Graphite hub, the lights on mine only do one colour - if that's any help
You could try putting your hub on a powerpoint on another circuit, or at the very least try locating it further from your printer, or turn the printer off.
Is your airport configured to select a channel automatically? I suppose there's a chance there's some interference. Do you have a cordless phone by any chance? If so, is it a 5ghz model, or 2.4? The 2.4 models are on the same band as your Airport, and I've heard this can cause problems, a factor I considered when I bought my 5ghz phone.
Have you tried connecting directly to your dsl or cable modem, or through the ethernet port on the airport hub, assuming you have one? If you connect direct to your modem, you can at least check if the problem's originating there, you never know....

  • IPhone 6 keeps getting kicked off wifi - No connection problems though

So I've been having this problem with my iPhone 6 wifi ..
I'm currently going to Texas Tech University for college, and they have campus-wide free wifi for students (after supplying login information). Now when I connect to their wifi network, I connect with no problem.  However, if I wait 4-5 minutes, I'm kicked back to LTE.  I have no connection issues though, as I can go back into settings and reconnect to the TTU network with no problems.
I asked some IT guys at the school, and they said they "weren't sure" exactly why it was happening, though they guessed saying, "Your phone bumps you off wifi automatically in order to save battery life." -- Is this true? Is there some way I can change this so I stay on wifi when I'm on campus?
I've tried turning my phone on & off, same thing happens. Likewise, this same issue happens when I'm home at my apartment trying to connect to my own wireless server.
    Any ideas / suggestions?
    Thanks!

Yes, that would be it. It has to do with the way the IT department has the Wi-Fi setup. This prevents people from coming by the school, parking the car and using their Wi-Fi. You have go log in to use it. There is a way for them to set up the Wi-Fi to be what is called persistent, so when you disconnect when the phone goes to sleep, it will connect again when it wakes up, but they may not want to do that. We have that at our college, but that is only for certain users and has a different network SSID. Unfortunately, you are going to have to live with the way they have it set up and log in as requested. Take care.

  • Keep getting kicked off imac wifi connection

I have 2012 2.5 gig Intel 21" with updated IMac w/Mountain Lion OS.  When my PC awakes from sleep most times I do not have internet connection to my home WIFI.  I have to go thru wifi setup assistant and passwords etc to get back on.  My MB pro never had this problem.  Is there something I can do to eliminate this issue?  Please advise. Thanks

    I too had connection problems-
Reset your network settings on your iPad if you haven't already done so. Go to  General settings; scroll down and tap Reset; tap Network settings. You'll have to renter you wifi security code for you router.
In my case my wifi only iPad 3 was confused when the settings changed on my router:
Every other wifi device in my home easily connected on my home network, but I had a problem connecting with my wifi only iPad 3. An apple representative suggested I reset my Network Settings on my iPad and everything worked again.
The problem occurred when my cable / phone company reset my router Oct 1. They are rolling out "wifi everywhere" promotion at the expense of sharing everybody's router connection. Somehow they reset my router, probably through an upgrade, and now my router offers a free hotspot. I found my router with my usual password protected network AND a free hotspot connection! The router software has new menu and selections for creating a free hotspot. I think this new router partition confused my iPad. After resetting my ipad Network Settings and restarting my iPad I no longer have connection problems. But I've also switched; Ask to join networks ON in my iPad's wifi settings to insure I stay on my routers secure network instead of my new free hotspot.
At first I thought; 8ASTURDS! and thought i'd delete the free wifi partition on my router. But I'm pretty darn rural and this allows friends visiting my house to connect without giving them my wifi password or them being hassled with entering the long hexadecimal code.
This may not be your case, but goes to show; Not everything is Apple's fault...

  • IMac Internet Connection Issues (Why do I keep getting kicked off?)

    Hi All.
I have a 24" aluminum iMac that doesn't like to stay connected to the internet via ethernet or Airport. I recently moved and am using a Clear modem that I am directly connected to via ethernet and the modem is functioning fine. My Mac will access the internet perfectly and then then next morning not have a connection at all. Diagnostics fail at Network Settings.
I have renewed my DHCP lease, restarted both comp and modem...jumped through all the hoops with a Clear rep. Still nothing. Not using any routers or 3rd party devices to connect unless using the Airport.
We have free internet where we live and my Airport will detect the router, but will not connect to the internet. The airport reads full signal strength, so there should be no issue. I have not changed my firewall or privacy settings, so there should be no issue there either. I did recently upgrade my Firefox application.
With both the Airport and ethernet I seemed to just be getting "kicked off" the internet. Each time I get kicked off, reconnecting is more of a chore...Please help Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

    Hi Rick.
I have Clear internet service, which does not run via cable or telephone line. I assume it is DSL. My Mac acted the same when I was on cable though, only the connection always come back after resetting the linksys router I had at the time. It only seems to drop the connection after waking from sleep mode.
I am using a standard ethernet cable. At times, in the Network portion of System Preferences, the status of my ethernet reads "unplugged" when the ethernet cord is still connected.
I double checked the connection speed within the network utility, as you suggested, and everything looks as it should.
The wireless situation...I do not have control over the router. It is free wireless via a linksys router in our apartment complex (only 5 or 6 units). I have never been able to connect to this but the other computers in the household pick up the signal perfectly.
Thanks for your help Rick. I appreciate it very much.
    V.

  • I am having trouble connecting to my network all of a sudden. It is not an issue with the service/router. I keep getting kicked off and getting a ! in my airport... anyone know what's up with this?

I am having trouble connecting to my network all of a sudden. I am able to connect to other networks but not my own. It is not an issue with the service/router because other devices connect fine. I keep getting kicked off and getting a ! in my airport. Last time it happended I called apple and the suggested I wipe my HD and reinstall everything. I did and it did not work. One day I turned my laptop on and it connected no problem. Now it has kicked me off again. I tried resetting my IP address but that does not work either! Has anyone had this problem?

    Try this:
Apple menu / System Preferences / Network.
Click Location: and select Edit Locations..
Click + (plus sign), and enter a name for the new location - anything will do.
    Apply this.

  • My computer keeps getting kicked off wifi and says there is a connection timeout.

My computer keeps getting kicked off the wifi- it's not s problem with the wifi because all my other wireless products are working just fine. What could the problem be? It will connect for about 5 seconds and then says the there is a connection timeout.

Delete the Wi-Fi connection in the Network preference pane, then recreate it with the same settings. Any difference?

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Trenchtown,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions
If you mean that when you have logged in to the AIM servers that you get silent drops in connection...
(iChat looks like it is connected but Buddies report you look off line and during chats the Texts. stop coming and they don't get yours)
Then go to the Airport icon in the Menu Bar if you have it there and Select Signal Robustness.

  • My mac book pro keeps getting kicked off home wifi

My Mac Book Pro keeps getting kicked off wifi. When I get kicked out I turn Airport on and off ,it then works for a few minutes then I have to turn Airport on and off again.Any Ideas?
    Thank you
    John

    Hello there Joanny,
I have a neat lil gem here about troubleshooting wifi connectivity on the Mac OS platform. Named Troubleshooting Wi-Fi issues in OS X Lion and Mac OS X v10.6 it can be found here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4628?viewlocale=en_US. I recommend this section first:
Use these steps if your computer disconnects from its Wi-Fi network unexpectedly.
Check your range to the Wi-Fi router and reduce the effect of interference. If your computer is too far from your Wi-Fi router or your environment has too much Wi-Fi interference, then your computer may not detect the Wi-Fi network properly. The easiest way to check for range limits with your Wi-Fi network is to move your computer or your Wi-Fi router closer together and make sure that there are no obstructions (such as walls, cabinets, and so forth) between the router and your computer.See Potential sources of wireless interference for more information about interference and solutions.
Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. If your computer works fine when connected to a different Wi-Fi network, then the issue may be related to your network router or ISP. In that case, contact the manufacturer of your router or your ISP.
And this section if needed: Symptom: My Mac does not connect to the Internet.
    Take care,
    Sterling

Are you connected via wifi? If so, and it is an option, try connecting using a ethernet cable. It sometimes seems to help as it can give a more reliable connection for the 5.3gb download.
If you do manage to download it you may want to make a copy of the installer file - which gets downloaded to the Applications folder - before running it as it self-deletes on successful installation. It may save you another monster download in the future.
