Getting legal with Lightroom 4...

I found out the software (Lightroom 4) that I have been using on my PC was installed by my son illegally from a bootleg copy he downloaded. I just bought Lightroom 4 from Amazon.com this weekend and received it yesteday so that I can have a legal version. I am not quite sure how to proceed though. If I delete the bootleg copy and then install the new legal copy, I believe it should be straightforward to import my catalogues. And I have all my images backed up. However, I also have a SmugMug Pro account that I am using your "Publish Service" to connect to. Are there any actions I should take to keep that service intact during the delete and install process?
Thank you so very much!
John

With many bootlegs, what you have is authentic software with in authentic licensing. In this case, you likely have a regular version of Lightroom with a fake serial number. Some bootlegs are hacked so they don't need a serial number. So the best bet is to uninstall the bootleg and reinstall a legitmate version. The new install should automatically continue to work with your same catalog, images, and even your SmugMug account. The use of the SmugMug publish service is not tied to your serial number or lightroom really in any way. Instead, when you authenticate your account, basically a cookie is added to your system that Lightroom accesses. If there is an issue, simply remove the authentication and re-authenticate.

• Getting started with Lightroom - Basic assistance!

Ok, forgive me - just starting with Lightroom (and anxious to get going!). I have a new book but I have questions on some other basics.
First of all, I have a Canon camera - I shoot my pics in Raw + jpg. After shooting my first raw shots, I have them on my laptop (Win) - they stay here before during the work in process (sort, process, and pick what I want to post on my site). Then I move all of them to a backup drive - which is also backed up on another drive.
Your suggestions - what is my first step? Do I import these into Lightroom (currently on my laptop drive)? Do I want to want to import all my pics (from library/folders on external drive) or just my 'need to work with' on laptop drive? What is the most effective us of the catalogs - do you only have one main catalog, one per 'shoot', etc?
As I start to work with these - will I ultimately save these in .raw since they are in .cr2 format? Is it best to convert all of them?
Once they are imported and I work with them and ultimately move them over to my external drive, will the location have any effect on this - i.e. since they were imported?
Functionality wise, I am ready to start using this - it's the initial stuff regarding my workflow that I am curious about!
Do you find this as a complement or replacement to Adobe PSE? Maybe I am used to 'opening a file' or doing the catalog in Adobe PSE that is throwing me off as I convert to a new process! Although, I didn't really use it for organization, just minor PP.
Thank you much for your response...

I'm sure other people will be able to provide more in-depth answers to some of your questions, as I have little experience of Canon raw file formats or PSE. However, I'd like to offer you a couple of suggestions regarding your workflow.
1. The FIRST thing you should do after you download the files onto your laptop is to make the backups. Do this here and now, not later. If you don't, you only have one copy of your precious photos. If something goes wrong, you're going to kick yourself if you don't have a backup. Make sure you have your external backup at this stage too, if your laptop drive fails, then your backup is not much good to you if it's on the same drive.
2. Personally, before I import the photos into LR, I do a quick cull to get rid of what is obviously junk, ie. out of focus/unnecessary shots/etc. RAW files take up a lot of space and the more of them I import into LR, the slower it will be. That isn't to say I ONLY import the ones I am going to work with, rather, I DON'T import the ones I'm NOT actually going to keep and store. I do import photos that I eventually don't work with but I keep some anyway because at some point in the future I may come back to them for whatever reason.
As they say, your mileage may vary and it's worth trying different workflows until you find one that is quick and comfortable for you.
Kind regards,
MCV

• Getting Started with Lightroom 1.3

I grabbed a download copy of LR 1.0 at the $200 web price. I upgraded as they came along, but never did much with the package.
I was using Bridge and CS3 along with DxO.
Well now it is time to get going with LR. I like what I have seen and heard.
My question is, "What is the best way to start my catalogs and move all my old photos?" Do I dump all my photos in one catalog? Create folders for everything? Use meta data labels?
Thanks,
Tom Loeb

Not sure whether this is what you are after, but my advice is to not change your folder structure--or anything else--to accomodate LR--or any program for that matter. Your folders are the lifeblood of an archive and should be organized hierarchically and named such that any image can be found reasonaby fast with any decent browser. File naming should also reflect what you require in your collection design.
Then import to LR--or whatver app you use. I concur that you should start small, but not too small--we started with 5000 images to be used for test purposes when LR was first released. That was increased to 15 k for LR1.2. We unfortunately found a major inadequacy in LR (for use with a group of 5 pros)and discontinued testing , which will now resume with 1.3.
Our problem was that LR 1.2 could not consistently recognize even exact duplicates on importing. Our particular workflow requires importing batches that often have up to 20% duplicates. It is not mentioned anywhere but maybe it is fixed in 1.3. If so, we will up the db to about 30K images as a next step. If not, we will stick with our present workflow--Bridge plus and independent DAM. If we do adopt it we will eventially probably have 150-175 k images in the DB--that is if it can handle that many.
I hope to do some tests later today, but duplicate finding aside, 1.3 has some substantial improvements over 1.2.

• How do I get rid of "get started with Lightroom mobile" text in LR 5.4?

All seems fine in LR 5.4 except I have the above text where my progress bars used to display. It's dispupting my workflow.
I don't see a checkbox in prefs to remove this. Any idea how I get rid of this advertisement?

The LR Mobile functionality of the desktop LR syncing its smart previews up to Adobe's cloud storage works for either Windows or Mac version of LR.
The LR Mobile app retrieving those synced smart previews back down from the Adobe's cloud requires an iPad version of the app, although and Android tablet version has been promised.
Neither the PC or Mac version of LR can run the mobile app, itself, they merely push data to the cloud for the app to retrieve.

• Sharing photos with Lightroom

I am really interested in using Web Collections, but I would like to allow my friends/family to download and save photos. Is there a way to enable this?
If not, would love to hear how others share photo albums.
Thanks!

If you're a subscriber to Creative Cloud for Photographers or the full CC suite, you have access to LR mobile. With LR Mobile, you can sync collections to the cloud. These collections can be viewed and edited on your mobile device, but more to the point of your question, you can make the collections available to anyone with a web browser, to view and download the photos.
Look specifically through these steps, Ste 7 covers your question: Get started with Lightroom mobile | Adobe Photoshop Lightroom tutorials

• Laptop and Desktop interaction with Lightroom

I'm just getting started with Lightroom and one of my big concerns thusfar has been the interaction between photos with my desktop PC (permanent storage) and travel laptop (Macbook Air).
I've read a ton of tutorials and posts on the matter, but they seem a bit outside the scope of what I'm doing. Many had people using dropbox to sync the two together, but I think that may be outside the scope of what I'm looking for.
Basically, here's my setup.
-Desktop PC houses my entire library of image files. Every night it is backed up to a file server
-Macbook Air that I take on the road with me
What I want to be able to do is take my Macbook Air on trips, and during the trip load my images onto it and do some light editing in lightroom. When I get home, I want to move all of the images into my permanent location on my desktop PC and copy the changes I made to the catalog on the road into my catalog that I use at home.
So I guess my questions are:
1. How is Lightroom going to handle my images changing locations? Initially they'll be in the default folder on my Mac, where I'll be editing them on the Mac, but eventually I'll move them all over to the storage location on my home PC.
2. Can I import an entire catalog from my Mac onto the PC? I think this part is pretty easy but just wanted to make sure.
3. If I were to store the images on my home PC long-term, could I use dropbox just for the catalog files? I'm envisioning a scenario where the images are on my home PC and the catalog is on Dropbox, always sync'd such that I never have to import/export it, but I'm not sure if this is possible (I'd heard there were some issues with this, but the posts are a few years old).
4. Does Lightroom need access to the original image files at all times or just when creating the catalog? That is, if the files are on my home PC and I'm away on my laptop and don't have access to the original files, but do have access to the catalog, will it work?

What I've done in a similar situation is select the images on the laptop, and then Export as Catalog. That creates a folder with a catalog containing all the edits, and another folder with the files themselves (assuming you check that option in the dialog box). Then I import from that catalog on my desktop.
There may be a better way, though....

Hi ya'll! I'm still learning how to navigate my way with Lightroom. (Last time I wrote, I did get some responses that work. Thanks so much!) Now, I have another question. When I try to copy pics from my external drive to a CD/DVD, no matter if do it from LR or my drive, I keep getting the message; "Disk burning is not supported by LR on this computer." I've tried everything I can think of, so, I thought I'd see if anyone may know if there's anything I can do. Or could it be that my computer just can't handle it? Help!!! So frustrating!! I have a PC Lenovo computer, I don't know if this makes any difference. Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!!!

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

.This happens whether or not I sign in to Creative Cloud before attempting to launch Lightroom.
My subscription is in good standing and Lightroom/ Photoshop are up to date. There are no earlier versions installed.

From what you report it appears that you have a trial version of Lightroom 5 perpetual license version installed. Subscribing to the Creative Cloud package PS CC and Lightroom will not activate this version. Try the following.
1. Uninstall Lightroom using the OS system normal uninstall process. This will not affect your existing Catalog and user files and but will just remove the Lightroom Application.
2. Reboot your computer.
3. Open the Adobe Creative Cloud Application Manager and it should give you the option to download the latest Lightroom 5 install package. Proceed to download and install this version and it should be activated automatically, no requirement to enter any license key like the Perpetual License version. It will automatically link to your existing Catalog files etc.
