Getting Leopard or iLife?

Ok. So I have been pondering about whether or not to get Leopard or iLife 08. I have enough money for both and if they are both worth it I'll get them, but if it people are vastly swayed one way, well then I trust your opinions. Thanks a lot.

If you want the honest truth...
No, you don't need them, a new OS is nice with it's bells and whistles, but at the end of the day, its there to enable u to achieve tasks. And I don't think that Leopard really allows u to do anything that you couldn't do before.
The same can be said for iLife 08. It organizes things a little differently, which for some people is better, for some people is worse, but doesn't give u anything amazing that you couldn't do before!
I was stupid, and bought into the hype. I think these updates are only worth it if u buy a new computer and get them free preinstalled. As Walt Mosburg and many others have said, this is evolutionary, not revolutionary. And at the end of the day, they are only updates.
For a good example, look at Vista (oh no, curse of satan MS!!!). Many people realised that at the end of the day, they weren't getting any increased productivity, or time saving features with it. Some aspects were more snappy, especially with ReadyBoost. but was it worth it? when with Xp u can do everything u need? No. And thats why u can still now buy PCs with XP, not Vista.
Leopard is a little different because the changes to the end user are so minimal and performance it barely effected by running it.
I have used Ubuntu with Beryl on my old PC when Vista came out. Those were some amazing effects that are way more advanced than anything leopard has to offer. And that ran on my old 1.8GHz Dothan CPU notebook. But I realized, for all the fancy effects, I got no extra functionality, just cool effects! So I would recommend u to use your money on hardware upgrades, or just new hardware.
For the same money u can buy these 2 updates,u can buy 1TB of HDD space, and external cases to put them in.
which is more valuable?
That is for you to decide.

  • FCE 2 and Tiger and iLife 05 or Leopard and iLife 08? on G5 Power Mac 2.5

I want to do basic and advanced editing with my FCE 2
I have Quicktime pro and Apple TV and Airport Extreme Base Station that I am about to hook up and integrate with my computer and Television.
Should I leave well enough alone with my Tiger and iLife 05 or should I install a full version of Leopard and iLife 08
I'm thinking I need the Leopard and 08 for the Apple TV and Airport Extreme Base Station.
Should I go ahead and put the Leopard and 08 and Quicktime Pro and UPGRADE to FCE 4, I can do this?
But will my old 2004 G5 2.5 Dual handle all this.
I could as easily stay with Tiger and FCE 2 and 05 except for the Apple TV and the Extreme Base Station.
Sorry I'm so long. I'm totally confused?

I'm one of the ones that got hurt really bad when Apple went from the G5 to Intel
I paid $3500 in Dec 2004 for what I thought was going to be the center of a Recording and Video Studio for music Video's and Documentaries.
I lost three years due to health matters and my Applecare expired Dec 2007
I'm trying to recover and start filming and recording.
I know that I will have to go with a new Intel PowerMac 8 core to run Final Cut Studio 2 beginning one year from now. I can't afford it now.
I'm trying to buy stuff that will work with the new Intel and my old G5 for now.
I bought the AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and an Apple TV in September to integrate with my new Panasonic Plasma 42" High Definition TV and a ONKYO 7.1 Home Theater System. $900 for the TV and $300 for the ONKYO
I bought a Canon HV20 High Definition and Standard Definition Camcorder to film with.
I want to shoot and film and edit sound and video on my current Mac until I get the newer computer and software that I am going to need to accomplish my goal of near professional quality in all facets. So this is the first step. I will be able to run all this stuff but compatibility issues are killing me because of the G5 Intel Changeover.
The learning curve I am trying to lessen by getting as near as I can to what next year will be fully modern and state of the art Apple Equipment and Software instead of piecemeal like I'm doing. I'm trying to lesson my losses the best I can and get this thing going without losing any more valuable time. I am 63 years old and couldn't set a watch seven years ago. It has taken me this long to get somewhat of a handle on what I knew was unimagined capability for a common man with all this new technology.
I bought the Leopard thinking I needed it. I can not use it and resell it pretty easily. I have no tech support, I'm trying to get this thing to work.

  • Question about Snow Leopard and iLife

One of my iMac computers has Leopard and iLife 08, if I upgraded to Snow Leopard, will it also upgrade iLife to 09, or will I still have 08?

I erased my hard drive prior to installing SL and restored the bundled apps as you described, but when I launch iPhoto I get the following message:
"You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
I did a software update and now have v7.1.4. I'm puzzled because I don't have any other versions of iPhoto that I could have made changes to my library with.

  • New Imac with Tiger want Leopard and ILife without waiting

I just got a new IMac for Christmas but it has Tiger on the hard drive and in the box. (Last time I buy hardware from Amazon). I do have a full Leopard install disc I used on my Laptop. Can I use this while I wait for my free Leopard upgrade to come or is this breaking the user agreement? Secondly if I do a clean install when I get Leopard how do I get ILife back onto the IMac without buying it again?(since it came pre- installed)?

  • Upgraded to Leopard, no iLife'08?

I just upgraded to Leopard from Tiger. Maybe I'm missing something but I do not have iLife '08, was this supposed to be on Leopard?

Yes, iLife '08 came with your new computer.
iLife '08 was not on the Leopard disk however, it is on the original disks that came with your computer.
The prior computers came with iLife' 06 so when people buy Leopard, they sometimes think they are getting a new iLife '08 with the disks. This is not so.
If they do an Erase and Install, they will have to reinstall the iLife '06 from their original disks that came with their computer. If their computer came with iLife '08, then they will still have to reinstall from the original disks that came with their computer.

  • Can I install Leopard and iLife 09, but keep iPhoto 05

    Hi,
I've tried looking for this answer and have come up empty. Can anyone tell me if I could upgrade my system to Leopard and iLife 09, but keep certain iLife 05 programs like iPhoto 05 and iMovie HD? The new box set is a good deal, but the new versions of those two programs sound worse than the old ones. iPhoto 09 seem to be a space hog with multiple copies of every picture, and iMovie 09 won't even run on my processor speed. I was also worried that iLife 09 programs might be too powerful for my older Mac and hang it up, but iLife 05 would be unsupported on Leopard and also get hung up. Anyone have any thoughts on this subject?
    Thanks,
    Ed

iPhoto 09 seem to be a space hog with multiple copies of every picture
iPhoto '09 keeps no copies - it will, just like iPhoto 5, have either two or three versions of a photo - the original, a thumbnail and if required a modified version
For this you get non destructive editing and always have the ability to revert to the original (the digital negative)
iPhoto '09 does take a lot of CPU resource - I have a 2.1 GHz G5 and it does bog down from time to time (the 8.0.3 upgrade made this much worse - I'm hoping that 8.0.4 or what ever improves the CPU needs)
And the feature set of iPhoto '09 is amazing compared to iPhoto 5 -- unless you have a memory shortage, or a disk shortage I would expect your 1.8 GHz G5 to handle iPhoto '09 acceptably - I've seen no one say it is worse that iPhoto 5 or 6 - an very, very, very few people have gone back to '08 (the report - I suspect that they stick with '09 for the most part since it does so much more)
Just the new format books with laminated photo covers and photo dust covers are reason enough to upgrade for me (and lots of others) - samples of the new book layouts can be seen at Liz Castro's web site - http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes/

  • IPhone wont show up in itunes after upgrading to leopard and iLife 08

    Hello:
For some reason, my iphone does not show up on my itunes after upgrading my mac to leopard and ilife 08. The phone was syncing properly before the upgrade. I also installed all the patches that were available for downloading but I did not try syncing between the main update and patches. I am running itunes 7.6 and had been running 7.5.1 before that. My iphone is on firmware 1.1.2 and I have it set to manually sync. My ipod video is syncing fine but I had that set to automatic syncing.
I checked the system profile and the usb is showing the iphone just fine.
    Can anybody help?

Yup. It does work, had the exact same problem, iPhone showed in system profiler under USB, and iTunes would not recognize, reinstall fixed it all. It almost looks like a permission problem after the reinstall to where some .plist files got wrong settings set, repairing permissions might work too.

  • Leopard, FCE & iLife '09 on a G4

    Hello everyone,
I'd posted a question on iMovie 6 in the iMovie forum, but I've since moved onto a new setup and felt it would be more appropriate in this forum.
As a birthday gift to my niece and nephews, I am giving them an old QuickSilver-SilverFace PowerMac G4, Dual 1.42GHz with 2GB of RAM that our tech department gave me. I want them to be able to run Leopard and iLife '09, but I know iMovie won't run on G4s anymore.
So I was thinking, after doing some online research, I can give them the G4, install Leopard and iLife '09, remove iMovie from the installation and install Final Cut Express instead. Every other software program I listed says that it will run on a G4 as long as it is faster than 867MHz.
Does this seem like a viable option, compatibility-wise?
Thank you, in advance, for your time and attention!

  • IPod Touch 64GB activated October 2013 - how do I get the free iLife, iPhoto and iMovie apps?

I purchased (from an authorised seller - Dixons Duty Free, Heathrow) and activated an iPod Touch 64GB on 18th October 2013 (prior to the announcement of free iLife, iPhoto and iMovie apps but after the 1st Sepember 2013 date in their conditions). It had iOS6 preinstalled. I've updated to iOS7. How do I get the free iLife, iPhoto and iMovie apps? The App Store is trying to charge me for theese.

Problem solved from information found in another thread....
If your iOS device was activated for the first time after September 1, go to the App Storeon your iPod which should open to Featured. If not, tap on Featured at the lower left of the screen & scroll down to Collections & tap on New to the App Store? then scroll down to Apps Made by Apple & tap. You should now see the iWork & iLife apps as "FREE."

  • Can't get Leopard to install on iMac G5

Can't get Leopard to install on iMac G5
Hi folks, I'm trying to install Leopard on my 20" iMac G5, but the install never completes. I get an error related to "essential package" failing or some such. I'm using a retail copy of Leopard.
I've read that many people have had trouble loading Leopard on the G5, but I don't now what the real problem is, or what the correct solution would be to making the install from the disc work.
I've also read that it might be a problem that the iMac G5s might not know how to read the install DVDs properly (despite the disc being verified earlier in the process).
I know the problem isn't the disc media because I have two separate retail DVDs of the Leopard installer (10.5.3). I tested them on other machines and they have worked. I even tried installing from a disc image of the installer, but no luck.
    Any ideas?

The iMac appeared to work correctly under Tiger, but it did have a problem. I had just got un-repairable error on the 4-year old drive that came with the machine. I installed a new Seagate barracuda hard drive because of. This was all before the Leopard install attempts.
Permissions were all repaired. New drive and other HDs were all verified. All devices were disconnected for install attempts. Tons of space on newly formatted drive, as well as other external drives I tried this on. So it's not the media, and it's not the hard drives.
I am using third-party RAM. Tech tool indicates that it is okay. Perhaps I should try installing with only the RAM that came with the machine.
I contacted Applecare several days ago and they said the usual. Repair disc. Repair Permissions. Try install. No good? Then try reformat from Tiger and install Leopard on clean HD. No luck. The next thing they would suggest is forwarding the issue to a specialist within applecare.

  • I bought ilife 11 but cant update it. Is there any e-mail address which can i get help about ilife 11

i bought ilife 11 but cant update it. Is there any e-mail address which can i get help about ilife 11?
i bought it from Turkey website. apple.com.tr and i paid the price bu i cant update it and there are nothing i can do? i called the turkey's apple but they said i should mail this to apple.com. So, i didnt find any e-mail support address for ilife 11.
what should i do? apple support center is really bad for unplanned situations.

Apple doesn't have an e-mail address. Unfortunately you'll have to resort to snail mail, for anything that can't be answered by phone or the website.
iLife '11 has had no updates issued so far:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#ilife
If it should ever get an update, it would likely be at that link.

5.Is it confortable?or tiger was better?
6.IF you want you can tell me how can i use some specified programs like 64 bit if that's a program or timemachine or spaces whatever
    Thanx!

WRT to most of your questions, see my reply in http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5934072
I wouldn't do an Archive & Install. If you follow the stuff in the linked post, your best bet after making the bootable backup/clone is to do an upgrade install. If that doesn't work out, then do an Erase & Install and migrate from the backup/clone. Once you've installed Leopard, most answers WRT to the new features and apps are in the Help files.
