Getting Location Preferences to 'stick'

In 10.3 or 10.2, I could define a specific wireless network for a Location. I can't seem to do this in 10.4 anymore - I only have a preferred list.
As an example, I have two networks in my home, a public and private wireless network with two diferent wireless base stations. Now, in 10.4, if I switch back and forth between my public and private home locations, it does not automatically switch to the proper base station, since all locations seem to share one preferred network list.
How do I get this setup to work like it used to in older version of Mac OS X?
Thank you.

I have the same problem. Sort of....
I have an old network location left over from when I had Panther on my computer. That one has the "join a specific network option" and I have that set to my private network. My other location, that I set up after upgrading to Tiger, I want to set up to join my other network by default. However, everytime I switch to the first location, it automatically moves that network to the top of the preferred network list, with the result that when I switch to the second location it doesn't automatically switch to the second network. I have different TCP/IP settings for the two locations so I can't stay on one location and manually switch networks via the menu bar. I'm stuck having to change the location and the network every time I want to change networks. (Not to seem like I'm whining but this is very frequent as my printer is on one network and my Internet connection's on the other...)
I believe you've pointed out the root of the problem, i.e. a shared preferred network list.
Definitely seems like a bug to me...

  • Download location preference won't stick

    Although all the other preferences work as you would expect after sleep/restart/log-out, the 'download location' preference always resets to Desktop. I change it to the Downloads folder on my desktop each time, but it never seems to survive sleep/restart/log-out. Does anyone have any ideas what might be going on here?

    Hi, your original post said:
    I change it to the Downloads folder on my desktop each time,
    Am i understanding you correctly?
    so it goes to the desktop but not into the folder,then is that the issue, i do not think it would go to the folder on its own, I think you would have to move it there. Or Pick other in Safari pref. & then pick the Down. folder.

  • I can't get location-aware browsing working

    Location-Aware browsing sounds like it would be really useful for me, but either I can't figure out how to get it activated, or there aren't any commonly used websites that make use of that feature. In the FAQ, the Firefox team mentions going into your Tools section to make some adjustments, but I can't find any such Tools section, and the Preference section, which I assume you must be referring to, doesn't offer any options like that.

    One location-aware site that you can test with is http://maps.google.com/ It should detect that it can get location information from your browser. Another is http://m.flickr.com/ -- click on the "Photos Taken Nearby" link.

  • AAM Install Location Preference Ignored... Again!

    I have a cloud subscription, so this refers to the AAM downloader/installer.
    Having had issues previously, I double checked that the preference location for where AAM is to install a new application was set.
    After over an hour of downloading, installing & rebooting where do I find the newly installed app?
    That's right -- in the same location as every other default -- c:\ program files
    Of course, that's not where I set the AAM preference location.
    So it appears that Adobe's App Manager has a mind of its own.
    Not only does it fail to allow you to set the preference for the very first app you install, but it also will completely ignore the fact you set it at all.
    Now back to uninstalling and trying the darn thing again. Maybe I'll get lucky and have it recognize that I don't want the installs to reside in the default location.
    More wasting time when I could be actually using the tools I purchased. Ugh.
    Anyone else experience this?  Maybe I'm missing some magic set of keystrokes or something.
    Thanks,

    After trying once more to install LR 4.1 via AAM w/ the install location preference set and having it default again I decided to "chat" with Adobe.
    Here's a portion of that chat:
    Adobe Chat Support: Since we lightroom 4 was not a part of creatiw cloud, when the CCMwas released in ,6dobe. After releasing the CCM the lightroom 4 was included in the CCM.
    Adobe Chat Support: And the lightroom 4 installer is build separately from other software and the software will be get installed, in the location where the operating s tem is installed.
    Adobe Chat Support: That is the reason you can install other software in your preferred location but not the lightroom 4, because the installer for lightroom 4 is different
    Adobe Chat Support: Though it will be with the CCM .like the other software, but it has a separate build in installer for ifs own and it can be installed in default location.
    Adobe Chat Support: Also we recommend you to install the software in the default location, because sometimes you might get any errors while using the software.
    So according to support we all should install in the default location.
    After wrangling around this issue for several installs, uninstalls, and re-installs I've found out a few things that differ from the above.
    1) With other CC (Creative Cloud) apps, you can set the AAM (Adobe Application Manager) preference for install location and they will install to that location.
    2) If you download from the CC website to begin your install before the AAM preference is set you will not have the opportunity to set it (or check that its set) and the install will go to the default location. [Open AAM from the desktop instead, check the preference, then download & install either from the website or directly thru AAM.]
    3) Uninstalling an app via control panel, rebooting, then checking AAM will display the option to Install in the AAM. (Sometimes folks have had issues where AAM seems to have gotten out of synch w/ their cloud app installs. This has consistently worked for me to keep them aligned -- i.e. always reboot after uninstalling before heading into AAM for another install.)
    4) LR install/upgrade behavior differs from other CC apps.
          a) AAM installs of LR 4.1 do not follow the preference for install location, they will only install to the default location.
          b) If you install LR 4.1 from AAM, but want to upgrade to 4.2 you *can* set the default location to a new place for the 4.2 install.  The LR 4.1 app displays a prompt for the update, you click the link to go to the download, download it directly from the web, then run the 4.2 downloaded file. Choose the desired location (different from where 4.1 is currently installed) and complete the install process.  Register the app as prompted.
    5) Adobe Acrobat X will install to the preference directory directly from AAM, however it will complain of not being licensed upon restart. (This could be because my internet connection was not up during its first pass at registration.)
           a) Upon seeing the license dialog which asked if I wanted to try or buy, I clicked try. Upon entering my adobeID it went to the internet to validate the ID and also appears to have validated the install.
    So, at this point I'm hoping I have resolved my installation issues and have successfully installed both LR 4.2 and Acrobat X to non-default directories.
    I am also hopeful neither is being considered by the system as "trial" software -- I'll see if the trial screen pops up for either in the future.
    The next question is -- can I uninstall LR 4.1 from the default location wtihout it impacting my LR 4.2 install. I hope so, but I'll save that for another day!
    So for anyone out there with AAM CC install issues -- hopefully this is of some help.   I know I certainly didn't find Adobe chat all that enlightening -- I got more out of my own trial & error. Sad.
    Cheers,
    -Bonnie

  • Just Type Preferences not sticking/buggy

    No device
    When I restart my phone any quick action or just type settings don't seem to stick, and I need to redo them...
    Anyone else experiencing this?

    I know this is an old thread, but it seems like the bug maybe wasn't resolved and I'm experiencing it as well:
    My device is the Veer, running 2.1.2. Preferences *were* sticking, but after running Doctor for an unrelated bug (voice dial wasn't working; it is now) any reordering in Just Type prefs didn't stick anymore. They would even revert before I closed the prefs card. I even uninstalled my theme and patches just to make sure they weren't screwing with anything.
    It seems to me, like others have said, that they reorder to be alphabetical and with 3rd party apps on bottom. Which sucks when what I use most in Just Type are twitter/FB posts and SMS. In order to get to them quickly, I have to keep only those 3 actions and delete the rest.

    *unselected "Sync music" from the appropriate tab. And iTunes warned: if you do this, we will delete every playlist and song on your iPod*
    To change to manually managing an iPod you don't "unselect" sync music, you "select" manually manage songs and videos. If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod by checking the box beside "manually manage songs and videos" in the Summary tab and clicking Apply. Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
    One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
    Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod
    I don't have any TV shows so I can't speak from experience here but looking at the TV tab it appears you can only sync shows, there's no manually manage option. Syncing would require that you keep the shows on your computer otherwise they would be removed from the iPod the next time you syncronised with iTunes.

  • How to get location of 3D object in a hierarchy?

    It's easy enough to get the location of a 3D object at the root, but how do I get the location of a 3d object that is in a hierarchy?
    For instance, if I have a baseball player (biped - 3dsmax), grouped as "player" and exported to Director, how do I then get the location of the biped's hand?  (or the glove that is linked to the biped's hand).
    I tried just doing the basic...
    put member("BBplayer").model("glove").transform.position
    but director can't find the glove.
    It can find the root model "BBplayer", but not any child object.
    Anyone know how to get the location of a child object?
    Thanks!!

    I downloaded and installed that xtra and it really just shows the same info that I get in my object inspector.
    Ok, so for a biped and related skin/mesh/objects to export correctly to the .w3d file type, one has to select all the biped parts and related
    meshes into one Group.  This group then becomes the object in Director that all things are based from.  My charcter looks and animates
    fine in Director.  However, I still can't get coordinate information from anything inside this group or inside the hierarchy of this group, only
    the group itself.
    If I look at the group, either in the object inspector or the xtra you suggested, none of the child models appear under modelResources, model or group.  They simply don't show up as being in this group or the children to the group.  Nothing does except a few things that are useless, like "group("Bip01 Footsteps"), or some of the nubs, like headnub, fingernub and a couple of toenubs.  Why some nubs show up and some don't is yet another mystery.
    Anyhow, none of this makes logical sense.
    I simply want to "get" location information for any 3d model in the scene, regardless of what group it's in or the structure.  Anybody?  It has to be possible, this is a fundamental need of any 3D programming.
    Thanks!!!

  • TS3048 My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I've put new batteries in the mouse and the green light is blinking but it just won't connect!!! I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc!!! Pls help

    My keyboard will connect wirelessly but my mouse will not. I have tried many times, put new batteries in etc. The Bluetooth appears to be on (as the wireless keyboard is working). I don't have a 'wired' mouse so I can't get into preferences etc. Is the mouse dead perhaps? The green light is flickering so it should be ok???
    Thank you for your help
    Sully (frustrated Irishman)

    From what you say I would suggest the batteries are not connecting properly.
    First, thoroughly clean all contacts, both inside the mouse and the contact points of the batteries.  Use an alcohol based cleaner (whisky will do, hic!)  dampen (not wet) cotton buds for cleaning.
    Then check to see if they fit firmly.   If you can shake your mouse and hear things are loose, that will be the batteries.   Check the make.   Apple and Duracell, in that order, are the best batteries.   Where slight undersizing has been reported they are with other than the foregoing.
    You can resolve the size problem with appropriate packing but that will always be a makeshift solution.  After, reassemble, turn on the mouse and with luck, away you go.
    Hopefully this will solve your problem but in any case let us know how you get on.

  • How to get locations in Module?

    How to get locations in Module?
    We are using OWB repository 10.2.0.1.0 and OWB client 10.2.0.1.31. The Oracle version is 10 G (10.2.0.3.0). OWB is installed on Linux.
    As we create target schema, it created location with host/port option. It is not allowing us to change to sql*net type connection. I tried after unregistering via CC as well.
    I created new location under location explorer as SQL*Net type location (L-SQL). I tested the location and registered via CC.
    I tried to configure in existing module (right click, configure) to point to new location (L-SQL). The new location L_SQL is not showing up in tables's location drop down list.
    Any idea ?
    I like to find out, what are modules use the specific locations like impact analysis on locations.
    Do we have such features in OWB?
    Thanks in advance.
    RI

    Hi RI,
    there is no direct impact analysis on locations in OWB.
    But you can use OMBPlus or public views for getting this info
    Public views:
    select * from ALL_IV_OBJECT_CONFIGURATIONS where configured_object_name='<module_name>' and configuration_parameter_name='DB_LOCATION';
    and/or
    select location_name,metadata_location_name from ALL_IV_MODULES where information_system_name='<module_name>';
    OMBPlus command:
    OMBRETRIEVE ORACLE_MODULE '<module_name>' GET REFERENCE METADATA_LOCATION;
    OMBRETRIEVE ORACLE_MODULE '<module_name>' GET REFERENCE LOCATION;
    OMBRETRIEVE ORACLE_MODULE '<module_name>' GET REFERENCE LOCATIONS;
    OMBRETRIEVE ORACLE_MODULE '<module_name>' GET REFERENCE DEFAULT LOCATION;
    OMBRETRIEVE ORACLE_MODULE '<module_name>' GET PROPERTIES (DB_LOCATION);
    Last OMBPlus command can return different values for different configurations.

    Yes, using the plugin APIs. There is a AVAppGetSpecialFolder() call that you can use.
