Getting mad at all these unwanted telemarketer calls! Do something Verizon!

I've been getting alot of unwanted telemarketer calls the last few months. It always seems to be from the same people but they use different numbers. It's a recorded message that says they have important personal information. I wish Verizon would do something to stop these **bleep**!  It doesn't do much adding the numbers to the don't call list since they always call from a different #. Here are a couple of the phone numbers they've called from.

What makes you think its telemarketers?  The script that you reported usually is a bill collector not a telemarketer..  Have you tried doing a reverse lookup of the number?

Why are you quick to blame the carrier and also what is changing carriers suppose to do because your phone number is stored in public data base if you are open to pay for info?
I cant get so many blaming carrier but when they get these same calls at home on a land line they dont blame the phone company...  This world is about passing blame...  I dont get it.

I have blocked the number but still they leave voicemails daily on my phone.

If you are in the US: https://www.donotcall.gov/
Far from fool proof, but a good start.

  • What's up with these unwanted, unsolicited calls?

Beginning yesterday morning, I've gotten four calls from area codes within California.  I do not recognize the numbers, and I have no contacts in these areas.

All my phone numbers have been on the DNC registry since 2007; I have current confirmations.
It is apparent to me that Verizon has no interest in dealing with this problem; I am still NOT convinced that my personal information was not leaked or otherwise compromised by Verizon.  Your assurance that you do not release personal information to third parties is of little comfort to me; Verizon, like any other organization, has in its employ dishonest and/or incompetent people.

I know unwanted calls be a pain in the neck CSwa! I recommend adding your number to the Do Not Call list and taking advantage of our free call and message blocking feature.
Please be assured we do not release any of our valued customers' personal information to third parties. I have included a helpful link below for your reference.

  • How Do I Get Rid of all these Pop-Up Windows?

Somewhere along the line, something seems to have added itself to Safari, so now every other new window is a sales site.  For example, just in the last couple of clicks I've had two different pop-ups for Mac cleaning utilities (MacKeeper is CONSTANTLY appearing) and even a telephone support line.  What can I do to get rid of all these pop-ups?  Is it a virus?  I admit I don't keep as close an eye on that sort of thing as I probably should.  They are driving me to the point where I'm about to try Firefox just to see if I can get rid of some of them, but I like Safari so much better so I'd like to solve the problem if I can.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

My ical is showing "on my mac" "iCloud" and "yahoo" calendars. I just want one calendar that will sync up to my iPhone. How can I get rid of all these Calendars??

'On My Mac' and Yahoo calendars won't sync to iCloud. You can move them to iCloud, but then Yahoo will lose contact with its calendars. if you are happy to sync onlly with iCloud, and thus to your iPhone, you can move the calendars: you will have to do it one at a time, and the process is just a trifle convoluted - it's described in the first set of numbered instructions here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmovecalendars.html

  • I recently got a macbook pro and I've noticed that with safari i keep getting popups and ads every 2 minutes, is there a way i can get rid of all these popups and ads on my laptop?

Basically I just want to be able to use safari without so many interruptions that aren't necessary. Please help!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • What are all these unwanted sounds?

Recently, after I've signed onto the my A8 17-inch laptop, the appearance of my desktop is accompanied by an obnoxious trumpet fanfare.  I have no idea why this started;  I sure did not program it.  The other day an annoying electronic sound accompanied my clicking on sites in my favorites list.  That's gone, but the trumpets remain.  Can you help me get rid of these?

Type "Change system sounds" into the Start Menu's search box and hit ENTER. Use that utility to change Windows sounds.

  • TS3899 I was deleting my emails when all of a sudden it started loading emails that had been put in trash and then deleted. I'm up to 1364. How do I get this to stop and how do I get rid of all these emails?

I was deleting emails on my iPad to trash , when 1364 past emails which had been sent to trash and was deleted was back in my inbox. I can't get this to stop. When I try to delete some emails it just adds more. Could someone tell me what has happened and how do I fix this problem?

"Other" represents data that iTunes can't recognize.  A few hundred mb of other is normal.  The 6.9 gb you have represents corrupted data (maybe from an interrupted sync or some other glitch).
Sometimes, syncing one more song can clear up the extra other.  If not, you'll need to restore your iPod.  Here are the instructions:  Restore:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
You can restore from your iPod backup when asked.

  • Signed up for FIOS Digital Voice days ago. Already getting telemarketer calls!!! Did I opt in?????

I switched to FIOS this week. As part of my triple play bundle, I have FIOS Digital Voice.
I signed up online to take advantage of some nice bundle savings.
The install went well and everything is working fine, with one MAJOR exception now:
I am getting several telemarketing calls daily on my FIOS Digital Voice line. I will need a larger timeframe to confirm this is not just typical fluctuating telemarketing call volume, but the fact that I a didn't notice it before porting my home phone number to FIOS implies something is amiss.
    1. My first important question:
When I signed up for FIOS online, I recall a checkbox during the ordering process (at a cost of $10) not to have my number published or listed in some Verizon directory or other type of phone directory (can't recall which it was).
I apparently selected the option to save $10 and thereby have my number published or listed.
Did I, unknowingly (hindsight is 20/20) attract these telemarketing calls that way?
I would appreciate it If someone can shed some light for me on whether that $10 I saved when signing up for FIOS was for opting out of (i.e.. for not signing up) for one of the following [apparent since I don't recall for sure what exactly the checkbox was:
(I recall something to the effect that it said we won't publish your name if you check the box and pay $10 for not publishing you name???]:
Here is the official distinction from FIOS' site:
    Non-Published, Non-Listed, and Additional Listings Non-Published, Non-Listed, and Additional Listings   Non-Published Service
Your name, address, and telephone number are not published in the Verizon Directory White Pages.
Your telephone number is not available from Directory Assistance (411).
    Non-Listed Service
Your name, address, and phone number are not published in the Verizon Directory.
Your telephone number is available from Directory Assistance (411).
Their site notes both of these have a monthly fee.
    http://www22.verizon.com/residentialhelp/generic/phone+generic/phone+product/questions/124388.htm
    Anyway, back to my questions:
    2. Does what I did make a difference anyway (hinges on the response to question 1 and on what it really means since i thought I read somewhere that telemarketers will get numbers even if they aren't officially listed and / or published).
Any feedback from the community on what EXACTLY that checkbox said and what implication it may, or may not, have as far as getting telemarketing calls as a result is concerned would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
EDIT - After posting this, I got a few more telemarketing calls already.
Today alone I am averaging  roughly one telemarketing call every 45 minutes (different telemarketers mostly with a few repeats).
I have had this number for numerous years while under Cablevision's Optimum Voice service and I was getting less than 5% as many telemarketing calls while under Optimum Voice, even though I ported it to Verizon just two days ago!!! As others have noted, this is very frustrating.
The worst part is now there is nothing that can be done by Verizon even if they wanted to since my number is already out there and being passed around!!!
Anyway, I do want to know if the item I checked (or left unchecked) when ordering FIOS online had to do with either opting out of my number being unlisted or unpublished?
I am pretty sure it mentioned something about a directory listing if I did not pay the $10 to opt out, but I don't know if it was unlisted or completely unpublished....
Can someone confirm which it is?

It seems like several / most of them are ADT dealers.
I signed up for the DNC registry last week. Had been avoiding since a) with Optimum Online I rarely got telemarketer calls and b) I heard it could make matters worse, so I didn't bother signing up since I was not experiencing calls at the time.
Too bad Verizon and other telecom firms do not automatically block these calls on their end for consumers who wish to opt out of telemarketing calls.
It would be easy enough to develop a simple database where users could flag numbers.
If a given number is reported several times by different users, Verizon (and other telecommunications firms could the validate that these are telemarketers and block them.
Verizon FIOS Digital Voice's current 10 number block list is not nearly enough, as many others have stated here.
They should increase that to 200 or more if possible (in any case, at least 100) per phone service customer.
I found a post that contains content that I will add to my voicemail announcement. It won't stop robo dialers though.
Ask to be put on their do not call list, ask the person you talk to to verify the number they're DNC'ing. Make a note of this. If they call back, let them know that you informed them on "xx" date you asked to be put on their DNC list, and you'll be keeping track of every call they make to you from here on out and will pursue remedies under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act if the calls don't cease immediately. 47 U.S.C. 227 et seq is where you'll be looking. A lot of consumer protection attorneys will take these cases since each call is at minimum a $500 violation, and if you can show it to be willful, the damages treble to $1500 per call.

  • After upgrading to OS 8.1.3 on iphone 5, suddenly all contacts have facetime and ring on both my ipad and iphone.  Went to Contacts and Facetime to Edit and delete, but no field to do so. How can I delete Facetime from all these contacts?

After upgrading to OS 8 on my iphone 5, suddenly all my contacts had Facetime capabilities. I only want to FT with a few people Unwanted FT calls now ring on both my iphone and ipad. I tried to edit and delete FT capabilities in both Contacts and Facetime icon, but there is no field to delete for this. How do I delete Factime from my contacts list? thanks for any help with this.

    Hi Ingo 2711,
Thank you for your suggestion.  I backup on itunes. I went to itunes, deleted syncing my contacts, then re-synced them. But the Facetime capability option continues to be there on most (not all, for some curious reason) of my contacts. I am not sure I posed my question correctly.  I want to be able to FT with my family, so don't want to delete the FT capability totally from my iphone and ipad. But I don't want all these other iphone calls from various contacts to ring on my ipad as FT calls.  I want a way to select with whom I have FT capabilities. Any further suggestions? Thanks much, trekpal

  • Telemarketing call filter app on iphone 5: Apple-Carrier issue?

I am on my second iphone (5) and probably my last.  Besides the awful iMaps, I still cannot get an app to manage annoying telemarketing calls.  I was told by one of my business customers Apple does not allow them in the App Store due to contractual restrictions with ATT and Verizon.  Can anyone confirm this is true?  If so, it is definitely my last iphone and good by to Verizon at the end of my contract.

You need to register your number with the federal Do Not Call list if you have not. If the calls you are receiving are from companies you have not done business with, are currently doing business with, or affiliates of companies you have/are doing business with then they shouldn't be calling you after your number is placed on the list (it may take up to 30 days I believe for the rolls to update). Otherwise, this isn't an iPhone issue. It wouldn't matter what phone you were using...telemarketers can call you if they have your number and you are not on the Do Not Call list. Also, tell the telemarketer that is contacting you that you want them to remove you from their calling list. They must do this if you request it. As mentioned, you can block some numbers either with the free option or with the monthly option.

    Hi Christoph and WarriorAnt,
Thank you both for the replies.
I don't know anything about GarageBand because I've never used it. I've never used any music software before, (other than iTunes, Ha!)
I don't have GarageBand on my Mac because it wasn't stock on the old Powerbook G4, so I would have to buy it. I'm happy to do that if I can figure out that it does what I want ... but I'm overwhelmed by the info at Apple's site. Too much for a beginner like me. Even the wikipedia.com entry for GB uses too many terms I don't know, so I'm easily lost.
I just want to be able to set up drum loops and play along with them. The main thing is that I'm able to use third party loops. There are so many really amazing loop products out there ... jungle drums, acoustic jazz drums, lounge, etc. I don't want to get caught up in anything proprietary (like Band-In-A-Box) because the selection is limited. I'm sure GarageBands loops are great, but I want access to all these other third party loops as well ... loops that were not specifically made for GarageBand.
Will GarageBand let me drop in any and all drum loops from these other companies?
And does GarageBand work like a basic sequencer, where I can program up an intro, X number of measures of a loop, then a turnaround, then a variation loop, then an ending, etc?
I know the high-end stuff like Native Instruments Kontakt does this, but unfortunately it also does a kazillion other professional-level things I will never need and don't want to pay for (and which make the software more complex and daunting).
Thank you again, both of you, for responding and helping me with this project.
Just a little more advice on those two questions would really go a long way.

  • Getting telemarketing calls! What to do?

I put my name on the do not call list, but I am getting a lot of telemarketing calls. I didn't even think they could call your cellphone. Am I wrong?
So far I've gotten 8 in the one week I've had my iPhone. They've been un-related except for two. I got one before I even called anyone/distributed my number.

I don't believe they can call a cell phone but they can always claim they didn't know it was a cell phone. I use my cell phone in place of a landline so I sometimes provide my cell phone number as a home number if needed.
As already provided, if you say no thanks and ask that your number to be removed from their calling list, they must do so. I was receiving such calls from a "restricted" number. The low-life company was hiding their number from showing up on caller ID. I finally answered the call and told the caller no. A few days later, I received another call from a "restricted" number. I was asked if someone from their company had already contacted me and I said yes, and they need to remove my number from their calling list. I haven't received another call from this company. I believe it was a credit card company and I told the 2nd caller that their company would be the last I would consider for a credit card regardless how low the interested rate is or benefits. Any company blocking their number from appearing on caller ID - either directly or by a telemarketing company hired by a company can't be trusted IMO.
Anyway, the next time you get one of these calls, ask that your number be removed from their calling list and be sure to ask for the name of this company, the name of the person you are speaking with, and where they are located. If they hide their number from caller ID, also ask for their phone number. This should ensure that your number is removed from their calling list after requesting it.
