Getting Mail to stop putting everything in the 'junk' mailbox

I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard several months ago and ever since then, Mail puts some incoming mail in the junk mailbox, even though it isn't junk, or marked as junk. I've tried moving the 'not junk' mail to it's proper account folder, but the next piece of mail that comes from that addressee (usually from support forums and other email alerts) still goes into the junk mailbox. Iirc, in Tiger one could move the mail mistakenly sent to the junk folder from junk to it's proper place and Mail would 'learn' to send it there instead.
Is there a Preference that got changed when I upgraded or something, and if so, what is it? About half my mail is now ending up in the junk box.

To answer your first question, yes, I have enable junk mail filtering on.
I'll try turning that off first.
Edit: I tried that, but it removed the junk icons attached to the 3 pieces of actual junk mail. I have 28 pieces of email that Mail put in the junk folder. 3 of them are junk and marked accordingly. None of the rest are marked as junk and shouldn't be there, so how do I create a filter telling Mail that mail not marked as junk not be put in the junk folder?
I also have the following marked in the junk mail part of Mail's preferences:
When junk mail arrives:
Move it to the junk mailbox
The following types of messages are exempt from junk mail filtering:
Sender of message is in my Address Book
Sender of message is in my Previous Recipients

• Mailbox behaviors: Erase messages in the junk mailbox

For each of my POP accounts, I have the Mailbox behaviors setting for junk mail set to "erase messages in the junk mailbox when one day old." This works fine for any mail which the mail filter catches and sends to the junk mailbox. However, many junk e-mails are not caught, so I click on the "Junk" button, to designate those e-mails as junk. At that time, they automatically move to the Junk mailbox. But within the junk mailbox are sub-boxes for each of my POP accounts, and another sub-box called "On my Mac." That's where the e-mails end up that I mark as junk, and they remain there forever. How do I tell Mail to automatically erase that junk mail after one day (or on whatever schedule I desire)?

Well, the Mailbox Behaviors settings are specific for each account, and the On My Mac Junk mailbox isn’t associated with any mail account, so there appears to be no way to specify such setting for that particular mailbox.
The thing is, the whole situation you’re describing doesn’t really make sense. If those messages end up in the On My Mac Junk mailbox, that means you’re manually marking them as junk after they’ve been moved to a custom “On My Mac” mailbox, which makes me believe what’s really happening here is not that many messages aren’t caught by the junk filter. What appears to be happening is that you have custom rules that prevent the junk filter from being able to catch them...

• Mail puts all mail in the Junk mailbox

I've been working fine with Mail for years. All of a sudden it started putting all incoming mail in the Junk mailbox, ignoring the filtering and sorting rules which I have set up in Preferences/Rules. I've poked around Preferences and everything seems to be as it was. I got rid of a lot of old mail. I rebuilt all my mailboxes. It's a pain to manually sort all my mail and even when I mark mail as "Not Junk" it still comes as Junk the next time.
Frustrating! Any ideas???

I ended up REMOVING the junk folder from the list of folders on the left. When mail arrives that IS junk, I mark it junk, then select "move to junk folder (again)" and off it goes. I find this much better than to have all my mail go to junk and I have to UNjunk it and move it to the appropriate folder.
I wrote to Apple, but have not received a response -- I'm NOT holding my breath!

How can I get Mail to stop automatically opening on startup of my MacBook Pro? It's not in my startup items folder. But it auto-opens every time I boot up

In System Preferences / General make sure the Restore Windows ...... is unchecked.
Also uncheck in the shutdown dialog box

I don't know if I'm asking this all in a way that can be understood? Thanks ED3K, however that part I do understand (in the link you provided!)
What I need to know is "how" I can separate or rather create another Apple ID for my son-who is currently using "my Apple ID?" If there is a way to let him keep "all" his info on his phone (eg-contacts, music, app's, etc.) without doing a "reset?') Somehow I need to go into his phone's setting-create a new Apple ID and possibly a new password so he can still use our combined iCloud & Itunes account?
Also then letting me take back my Apple ID & password, but again allowing us (my son and I) to use the same iCloud & Itunes account? Does that make more sense??? I'm sincerely trying to get this cleared up once and for all----just need guidance from someone who has a true understanding of the whole Apple iCloud/Itunes system!
Thanks again for "anyone" that can help me!!!

• I inadvertently removed the junk mailbox from Mail.app in SL, how can I recreate / restore it ?

Hi,
Well, the title says it all : I inadvertently removed the junk mailbox from Mail.app in SL,
it still is spresent in my ~/library/mail folder, how can I recreate / restore it in mail.app ?
Since I have a fair number of email accounts, intelligent mailboxes, rules and archive folder, I really don't want to rebuild everything. And, no, I can't use time machine to restore it.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi AdamKB, sorry for late follow-up.
What I lost is the "container" that groups all junk mailboxes in one place in Mail, like is done for all the inboxes.
The problem is that I lost visibility on all junk mailboxes. It is only a visibility problem because the junk mailboxes are still present locally for my POP accounts and remotely for may IMAP accounts, I justdon't see them anymore in Mail's interface.

• I'm not receiving any mail into the Junk Mailbox

Hi
I had a problem with the ports of the 2 accounts that I have set up in Mail (one of those is mac.com) due to an excess of space used. I tried several options and it finally it worked. As a result, a week later I realised that I was not receiving any mail into the Junk Mailbox... I don't know if it is related to the orher problem, maybe not.
Essentially I am no longer receiving any junk mail at all - and no mail that is even doubtful (ie from an unknown address). The mails are not showing up even online via MobileMe ... so I have no idea where they are!
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I'm the author of the form and I expected the generic notification to be sent to that email but none is coming through. I also see that there is a place on the settings page to enter a custom notification email but that is grayed out unless I upgrade. I just want at least one, generic email to be sent to me so that I can know when a user submits a form.

• Mail does not move Junk mail to the Junk mailbox.

I use OS X 10.9.3, Mail Version 7.3 (1878.2) and have created the rule that if Message is Junk, Move it to the Junk mailbox, but it does not work. Junk messages remain in the Inbox, even after I select messages and Apply rules. I have tried marking and unmarking as Junk, and then they disappear, but this is obviously not a sustainable longterm solution. Any other suggestions?

Hi Jeff, are you saying the Inbox with Junk is inside the Junk Folder, or is this a different account?
First Quit Mail, look in the finder for those IMAP folders inside your...
Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/IMAPaccount folder, move them where they should be in the Finder.
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

I cannot highlight more than one e-mail. I am concerned about this when I am in the Junk mailbox. I do not want to open any e-mails that are in this mailbox.

Two thoughts:
1. You never need to open any emails in the junk mailbox. You can simply do Mailbox > Erase Junk Mail from Mail's menu.
2. What happens if you hold the shift key after highlighting the first in a series of emails, then click the second one with the shift key depressed? That should hightlight both.

Junk mail returns after deleting the item in the "Junk mailbox" and "Trash". Is there a way to permanently block the sender?
I have deleted the item multiple times both on my Mac mini and my touch and 5 minutes later it is back in my Junk mailbox. The item will not return to the Junk mailbox until it is deleted from the trash.

You can create a Rule

Option to "Erase messages in the junk mailbox when:..." not working.
I have this set in all accounts to "one day old", but junk mail in the Junk Mailbox older than one day still appears. When I re-select this option under the accounts pref's, junk mail older than one day is properly deleted, but after a day it's back to not deleting anymore!
I've deleted the Mail pref file, etc, but still no luck.

• My refresh button will not appear in 4.0, all I can get is a stop and home button, the refresh shows up in customize toolbar and I can put it up there, but as soon as I close it it dissapears, how do I get my beloved refresh button to show up?

At first I had the stop/refresh buttons merged, which I hated so I tried putting spaces and things between them to stop their unholy union, but instead it has now made my refresh button dissapear in anger for not being allowed to see that dirty stop button! I cannot make it come back! Even if I put it on the toolbar in customize and it shows up, the moment I close it it has gone again.

Firefox 4 uses a combined Stop/Reload/Go button that is positioned at the right end of the location bar.
During the page load process it shows as a Stop button and after the loading has finished the button is changed to a Reload button.
If you type in the location bar then that button becomes a Go button.
You can middle-click that Reload button to duplicate the current tab to a new tab.
To move the Stop and Reload buttons to their position to the left of the location bar you can use these steps:
* Open the "View > Toolbars > Customize" window to move the Stop and Reload button out of the location bar.
* Drag the Reload and Stop buttons to their previous position to the left of the location bar.
* Set the order to "Reload - Stop" to get a combined "Reload/Stop" button.
* Set the order to "Stop - Reload" or separate them otherwise to get two distinct buttons.

• Who do I contact to get Verizon Wireless to put me on the plan they promised?

My daughter got talked out of an unlimited account when she got a new phone by a verizon salesperson who told her based on her 3g usage she would never go over 2 GB of Data on a new 4g phone. (Which was totally untrue because with the same usage, she used more bandwidth every month on 4g) They put her on a 2 GB data plan when they were offering everyone else who had unlimited plans a 6 GB plan. After we called back to question this, the agent agreed that since the 6 GB plan was available at that time that she should have been offered it, and they would take care of it.
Fast forward several months.....NOT FIXED STILL
I have spent many hours on the phone for many months now, with many agents including Mark, Terry, Todd, Vanessa, Tim, Swasi, and Nadia to name a few...who all promised to take care of this. They apologized, gave a credit for the overage that occured one month due to the smaller plan, and said they would get the appropriate department to make the change. The last guy said since he couldn't get us on the 6 GB plan yet, he would put us on the 5GB plan and credit back the $20 difference EVERY MONTH and that the credit would not stop as long as we were on the 5 GB plan. He would then pursue the 6 GB plan. Each time they say call back in a week (so I can talk to a new person and explain it all again for an hour....and not get it fixed again!!!!)
For a long term customer with 5 lines and a long history, they sure don't make you feel like they care...and they don't make good on their promises as far as I can tell, because we are still not on the 6 GB plan (that still exists and they still offer to people!!!) and we are no longer getting the $20 credit for the 5 GB plan they put us on in the meantime with a promise of no fee increase. Now I'm told the request for the 6 GB was rejected and that verizon does not plan to do anything or credit any money as promised. "Sorry, we can't put you on that plan". (even though several agents and supervisors approved it and said they would take care of it) This is SOOOO incredibly frustrating. I HATE being lied to and I hate it when a company does not do as they say they will. This is very poor customer service.
Up until now, I was happy with verizon, their service, and the phones, but now I am looking at when my plans expire so that if they can't make good on their promise I will plan to move my 5 phones and my 2 parents and 2 inlaws and the rest of the family's cell service to AT&T. They offer a larger corporate discount and rollover minutes too.

@Verizon Wireless Customer Support
Matthew:
When I search for MatthewS_VZW on Twitter, I get a message that there is no such user. I only see Matthew44vzw and matthewvzw. Are either of those you?
Since this is a verizon wireless forum, I presume that the VZW rep has access to the email used. Other companies work this way on forums like this. If you do have access, feel free to email me, if not, please give me the correct twitter handle and I will follow and DM you. I am getting pretty frustrated with all this.
