Getting material from dvd in fcp

Hi!
I don´t know how to get material (I suppose digibeta from TV) in fcp. I only get Video and Audio seperated! Will the quality of the material be better, if I get the original digibeta material?
Help!
Mel

I'm not sure what your situation is there, Melanie. Is the material encoded onto a viewable DVD? Or a QuickTime stored on it as a DVDROM? If encoded as a DVD, then yes, you would be far better off getting the original source tapes. If the QuickTimes are stored on a DVDROM, be sure to drag them to your media HD before using them, they won't playback fast enough from the DVD.

  • Video and audio files from dvd using FCP

    Hi
Trying to get footage from a dvd using fcp. I can import the clips ok using file >import but they have no audio with them and the audio folder on the dvd is blank...any ideas????????
    cheers

The audio_TS folder is normally blank.
You need to use MPEG Streamclip to get the DVD files to Quicktime.

  • Extracting from DVD to FCP

    Greetings,
I need to extract a 30 sec commercial from a DVD to edit it in FCP and then add subtitles to it in DVD SP and burn it to DVD again.
My question is, for a 30 second commercial that is 720x480 NTSCP, what are the best settings fo extracting the video? Which one would give the best quality?
I notice that I can copy the .vob by opening the DVD on the finder and import it to FCP. Is this the best way to do this? Or should I use something like MacTheripper or Handrake instead?
Lasly, after I edit it in FCP, what is the best setting get it to DVD SP at the best quality?
    Many Thanks in advance!

I would still use Mpeg Streamclip to convert it before you edit it. the reason being that the VOB file you bring in is going to be an Mpeg2 video file and that is a GOP structure (group of pictures) so you will be making an mpeg of an mpeg. Not ideal. Best be is, especially if it is only 30 sec, to convert to a Quicktime movie in Streamclip (free download by the way) and then add what you need to add. Then, export to compressor, use any of the DVD best quality settings, then go into the quality tab of the inpector in Compressor (make sure you have the setting highlighted in the batch window) and bring the quality setting up as high as it will go. I think you can only get VBR to 7.7 average and 9 or so best.
then add the audio portion and the new mpeg2 into studio pro and you're done.

  • Import Clips From DVD into FCP

I am working on a 50th anniversary project for a client. They want to include several "home movie" clips in the project. They provided the home video footage to me on DVD. I am looking for the best way to import the material on the DVD into FCP.
I have used Handbrake to capture the video from the DVD and the file is saved in an MP4 format. But when I try to import that file into my FCP bin, FCP tells me that it does not recognize the file format.
I think that I can connect a DVD player to my system by running the signal from the DVD player into my DV cam, and then into my MAC, so that is a possibility.
I am just wondering if I am overlooking something that is quicker or easier.
Again my goal is to import material from a DVD into FCP so I can use clips on my timelines.
    Any hint, tips, advice?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Ripped audio from DVD to FCP

Once I've used a ripping program like Mac the Ripper to get video and audio files from DVD, how do I get the audio only onto a cd?

    Geez David.
I kinda noted that. The question is where are the original unencoded audio sources? Is this music? Or someone talking? If it is music, use the the sources if they are not copyrighted.
You don't need "Mac the Ripper" to extract unencrypted or non copyrighted DVDs.
We get so many requests here about extracting VOBs from DVDs.
Given the terms of use, and laws about extracting from commercial DVDs, many of us are suspicious when a "client" brings in an encoded DVD and wants it "reauthored" for his reel.
Now this isn't you, but when I say get the original source of audio, then I wonder why it isn't available.
Or why didn't the DVD simply contain aiff audio files as a data DVD
    take care

  • Ripping video from DVDs for FCP

I want to create an assignment for students (I teach a very basic video editing ocurse) where students will rip some video from various commercially available DVDs to practice editing their own trailers together with scenes from the movies. In the educational environment it is legal to rip short clips of video from DVDs.
I think I'm going to use MPEG Streamclip for doing this
    1. Does anyone have any tips for preparing ripped footage to make sure it looks good in a FCP sequence? Is there anything you should do with the footage in FCP to make it look good?
    Thanks.

David is right. MPEG Streamclip will not rip commercial DVDs.
It may well be legal in education to rip discs, however discussion of the process is not permitted here.
Once you have that aspect sorted out...
I have a tutorial for MPEG Streamclip here: http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739

  • How could i get footage from camera to FCP with no firewire

I have a Imac late 2009 21.5 with a broken fire wire. How can i get footage from Canon XM 1(tape only) to FCP I have a PC that has firewire that works have loaded footage to Movie Maker and put it on a USB flash Drive put that into mac but cant convert it with MPEG clip stream as planed. Any thoughts? I thought second hand mac mini may do the job. Repair firewire £653.14

Without firewire, you cannot capture from that camera in FCP.  It only works via firewire.  So you need another computer or fix that firewire.
Your other method...seems ugly.  Ads layers of compression that might make it look ugly.
Borrow a friends machine with FCP if you can.

  • Editing footage from DVD in FCP

    Forum,
Here's my issue. A client has a 2 hour presentation on DVD, which they want to edit down to a 90 minute piece. This shorter piece will end up being on a looping DVD. The footage on the original DVD is 16x9 and they want to keep it that way for use on large widescreen monitors. What is the easiest way to get the footage into FCP? The clips to capture will be long, about 30 minutes, do I capture it playing from a DVD player? Do I use a "DVD Ripper"? I have no experience using that type of software.
    Help is appreciated.

MPEG Streamclip is what you need to convert the client's DVD to an editable format. The problem is that the video on DVDs is very highly compressed. If you take it, edit it and then recompress it back to a DVD there will be a noticeable loss in quality. Talk to your client and get an uncompressed version of their video (not a DVD).

  • How to get video from DVD into FCE?

    Hi,
I have a DVD which I got from a childhood friend. The DVD contains a compilation of old film clips (her family had old super 8 movies transferred to DVD). I'm trying to import the clip (it's one long video clip, 30 mins long) into FCE for editing. But, when I try to import, all I see on the DVD is one file folder labeled VIDEO_TS; this folder contains eight files with strange suffixes, such as .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP, none of which are accessible. Anyone have any idea how I can get the files into Final Cut Express?
I would really appreciate any advice. Thank you.
    Vic

Hi again, Martin. I did the 'conversion', and it appeared something was happening (i.e. a 'progress bar' showed that something was going on, and it took about 20 mins or so. So, I figured it was doing the conversion. Once done, a 'play' button appeared, but when I pressed it, nothing happened. Does that sound like I'm missing the MPEG2 Playback Component?
Note: I noticed during the conversion an indication that the file, about 2 gigs seemed to be being created, but for the life of me, I don't know where the file went (i.e. I don't know where (or even if) it was stored on my computer). Anyways, the process seems not to have worked. I guess, as you said, I'll need to purchase the Playback Component?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Getting video from DVD

I have used a VCR Player/DVD recorder to transfer files from old family VHS tapes to DVD. After finalizing these DVD-R disks, I wanted to take them to my Mac and further edit them with iMovie or iDVD, however, the Mac will only play them with DVD Player. It will not recognize nor accept the files into either program. My local Mac dealer told me to purchase Roxio’s Toast 6 with JAM and said that it would be able to open and convert these images to a format which the Mac could use. NOT! Toast says “unable to recognize the format” or I get a system 50 error. How do I get these old video to my Mac in order to edit them and save that to DVD?

  • Get Photos from DVD Slideshow

    Hey there
I am running the PSE 5.0 with PE 3.0 combo. I created a slide show in PSE and sent it to PE to add some video clips to it before creating a dvd. Since doing this I have deleted the slideshow from my computer and was wondering if there was a way to just import the photos from the DVD. Some of the photos had captions added and I would prefer to not have to go through all my pics again and put them in order and add captions...you understand. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Jason

    Jason,
    >wondering if there was a way to just import the photos from the DVD
    Probably not -
If you have created that DVD from Premiere Elements, then it contains a video in which your photos appear. However, the are not actually photo files on the DVD because they have been encoded to video format.
If you have made a regular DVD (standard definition) then the images of the photo within the video on the DVD only have a resolution that is equivalent to 640x480 pixels. This resolution is lower (worse) than some cell phone cameras or your PC/laptop monitor and is not practical for printing photos.
    >Since doing this I have deleted the slideshow from my computer
1-- Did you delete both the Photoshop Elements Slide Show AND the Premiere Elements Project (file) for this video?
If you have either of the project file from PSE or from PRE and you have the actual photo files still on your computer, you might be able to get the photos in sequence with captions again.
Some more details to help evaluate alternatives -
2-- How do you plan to use these photos with Captions?
3-- Did you add your captions to the photo file OR did you add the captions during the PSE slide show editor process?
4-- Did you make a Collection of these photos to establish the sequence of photos before you started the slide show in PSE?

  • Importing from DVD into FCP

I need to edit using material on a dvd in VIDEO_TS format. Is there someway to import it directly from Final Cut Pro or do I use Compressor or MPEG Streamclip or something else? Can you spell out for me what I need to do as I'm not a techie.
Also I have 2x DVD-R 's which when I put into my computer's DVD tray it reads as empty discs, yet they both play fine on my TV's DVD player. What's the solution.

  • How to import audio/video from DVD into FCP

Hi, I need to import/capture into FCP from a dvd. When dvd files are open on my Mac it show VOB fotmat for video. I imported those files but they don't have audio, also the total time is 20 minutes but when imported into FCP it shows only bout 25 seconds. can someone help on this matter?
    Thanks in advance

Cinematize works great. You can select portions or the entire DVD. It will not read encrypted DVD's so assuming you are using media that you have rights to it will do fine.
You can import in several compressions. If you like you can import only the audio, only the video, etc. It will give you a QT file at the end.
