Getting more Junk Mail in one Mac than the other

I have two Macs I regularly use: a G5 running Tiger, and a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. The G5 gets a minimum of junk mail. The MacBook Pro gets a significant amount. Both junk mail filter settings in Mail preferences are set identical to one another (enable junk filtering - yes, etc.). I can't figure this out. Thanks.

Yes, POP3 mail accounts. I can't understand why this would cause one computer, and not the other, to bear the weight of a majority of the email. I guess one wey is to see if the computer with less email actually never received it, and that it wasn't filtered out. But I honestly still wouldn't know what to do if that happened to be true.

  • How do I get incoming mail in one of my mailboxes unstuck.  It will not download any mail in one box but the other mailbox works fine

How do I get incoming mail in one of my mailboxes unstuck??  It is trying to download it but seems jammed.  The other mailbox is working fine.  I know there is mail there because it is coming into my bb.  This just started this morning.  I took someone's suggestion and duplicated my mail from the library and I then put com.apple.mail.plist on my desktop.  I was unable to delete the incoming mail from the mailbox however so don't know what to do.
    Help?

Try this: If this is Apple Mail, select the Mailbox, then from the Mail Menu>Mailbox>Rebuild.

  • DNS not resolving on one Mac but the other works fine in same local network

Snow Leopard is doing something strange to the DNS or the permission to ping.
I have 2 Macs on the same local network, connect through the same ISP (verizon FIOS). One has no problem resolving any domain, but the other is constantly not resolving some domains.
    The problem progresses like this:
    * All of a sudden, DNS is not resolving from Ethernet (when it did perfectly well a minute ago).
    * Then I switched to wireless (using the same LAN), and it resolved fine.
    * Then it failed completely a few minutes later.
    * Then I reboot my Mac, and it seemed to clear that, and worked for a day.
    * Then it failed again in both Ethernet and Wireless; rebooting does not fix it.
    * I cleared all the caches using Onyx, did "dscacheutil -flushcache", zapped the PRAM, reinstalled 10.6.2 combo update, repaired the permission, nothing works.
    * Since the unresolved domain is my own domain, I changed the nameserver, and waited for it to propagate to see if that may be the problem, since it appeared that it is not resolving the A Record, and I waited 72 hours, and it is not resolved or propagating to the local DNS, but it worked perfectly well on my other Mac within the same network.
    * Then I added other DNS, such as google DNS 8.8.8.8 or openDNS servers to it, but it didn't fix anything.
    * Then I "ping" either the unresolved domain or my own Mac .local, and it gave me the error "permission denied". (Whereas I have no problem pinging my own Mac or the unresolved domain in my other Mac that works!).
    * Then I "sudo ping" the unresolved domain or my own Mac, and it pinged perfectly well.
    * Then I tried "ping6" my own Mac or the unresolved domain on the broken Mac, and it worked fine!
    * Also, I used http://network-tools.com to ping it, and noticed that during the trace, somewhere along the route through te7-2.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com and po2.car04.dllstx5.theplanet.com, it timed out along the route, so I don't know if the timeout could have been causing the reject, but I doubted, because "sudo ping" locally will get through but "ping" does not.
So I think I traced the Snow Leopard DNS problem as follows:
    * Why does "ping6" works, but "ping" permission is denied unless the user is root?
    * I tried to "chmod 4755 ping" but it won't let me.
    * Is it because DNS is resolving using IPv6 but not IPv4?
    * Or is Snow Leopard somehow screwed up the permission to access ping or similar DNS service?
    * Why DNS has no problem in one Mac but caused problem on the other Mac, even though they are in the same local network?
    * The only difference between the Macs maybe because I have Parallels installed in the Mac that failed to resolve DNS (with the extra Parallels Shared Ethernet), which may be interfering with it, but I tried to turn Parallels Shared Ethernet off, and it did not fix the problem.
Can anyone help or have any idea that I can fix this nagging bug with DNS? The DNS had worked before, but it simply quit working all of a sudden, and nothing can resurrect it.
    Thanks.

Shut down Parallels and restart w/o letting any of Parallels TCP/IP stack resurrect itself. So many network issues with VM solutions. See if the problem persists. Create a new account and ping from there. Are your search domains manually entered on the 10.6 box?

  • 2 ACD 30" running on NVidia FX 4500--why is one brighter than the other?

Last November 2006 I bought a new MacPro, 2/3Ghz Xeon, 4/500GB SATA drives, 4/1GB 667 MHz DDR2 DIMMs, and NVidia Quadro FX 4500 video card to run a 30" ACD. July 2007 (last week) I added a second 30" ACD which is noticeably brighter than the first ACD. This holds true whether running OS X 10.4.10 or Windows XP Pro w/ BootCamp 1.1.2.
After 2 hrs on phone, AppleCare advises an appointment with AppleStore "Geniuses" since it's 8 mos old and still under warranty. Today, local Geniuses respond: "it's just newer technology, nothing wrong with either one"; "you didn't buy it from us (MacConnection)"; "dim down the bright one to make it match"; store manager offers to send older one back for unspecified repair but adds "it probably won't make any difference, and since you didn't return it within 14 days of purchase (last November) we can't exchange it for a new one. Besides, you didn't know there was a problem until you bought the new one, right?" The geniuses are uninterested in making a side-by-side comparison with a newer ACD and stand silent waiting for me to give up.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem with two ACD 30s running on a MacPro? Or this trademark indifference with respect to service?

    Hi and welcome to discussions.
I think there is some natural minor variation between LCDs bought at the same time anyway. They also do tend to become slightly dimmer with age. However, Apple did update the specs on the 30" ACD during 2006, including the brightness. According to the following article it went from 270 to 400 cd/m2, a significant jump:
    http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/3/28/3369
When you bought in November 2006 I guess it's possible you got some older stock, especially if you bought from a third party retailer. I suspect there's nothing actually wrong with the displays themselves and hence they can't be 'fixed', other than to make some manual adjustments to the brightness etc.

  • ITunes 7.0.2 sees shuffle on one Mac, not the other

I have one Mac with several System disks. All at 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.2. One system sees the new shuffle and will loads tunes. The other will ask to erase and sync and I agree. Then I choose songs and then apply. One system will go and load up the shuffle (with the proper image of the new shuffle in iTunes). The other (with a generic iPod image in iTunes) will say it cannot update because it cannot find the shuffle! On that problem system drive, I removed iTunes (receipt and helper) and then re-installed iTunes from the dmg. Same problem.
What other files is iTunes using that are corrupt on the problem system drive?
You may ask, why not use the good system? Well, the problem system is my everyday system with all the apps working! This system drive also has all the tunes files. This also has been through many upgrades.
It is time to start over?

The only receipts I have for iPod are the updaters for their firmware and the new reset program.
    iPod2005-06-26.pkg
    iPod2005-09-06.pkg
    iPod2005-09-23.pkg
    iPod2005-10-12.pkg
    iPod2005-11-17.pkg
    iPod2006-01-10.pkg
    iPod2006-03-23.pkg
    iPod2006-06-28.pkg
    iPodshuffleResetUtility.pkg
I still think there is some file that got munged and it is preventing iTunes from working properly. This file is not provided by iTunes, but must be part of the OS.
    Here's hoping for a solution

  • Is one brand of printer better doing photo work on Macs than the others?

    Hi,
I'm still having issues with trying to print photos. Text is fine - photos are an endless source of frustration.
The only program that I seem to have that will allow for printing one sheet of photo paper with 4 different photos on it is PhotoShop Elements. But its print program is telling me that my prints may not be as good because my printer isn't a "PostScript" printer. It's right, my prints are awful. When I pull up my info about my Mac and look at the printer info, it lists a version of PostScript [version (3010.000) 705] so it must be a PostScript printer - but the computer or PhotoShop isn't picking up on that.
I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX620 all in one. A tech guy at Apple told me that all in ones can be touchy.
Those of you who do photo work; Have you found that there is a brand of printer that works better with your Mac? Should I get a photo printer and scanner seperately, instead of the all in one?
I have old photos and slides that I'm wanting to work with so I need the scanner.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Pearl

  • How do I transfer purchased apps from one mac to the other?

When i want to sync my iPhone in iTunes on my new computer I will lose all of the apps that I purchased.
Can someone tell me how to sync it in a way (or some other solution) so I can keep my purchased apps?
I'm using the same ID as on old mac.
I have been searching on the internet for help, but I can't find a clear answer.
    Thanks in advance.

    1) authorize iTunes on the new machine for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
btw, purchased apps can be redownloaded over and over free of charge ...

  • Missing effect on one Mac & not the other?

I was working on a project today during a onetoone at the Apple store using my MBP and the external drive that I use exclusively with FCP X, and everything worked great. This evening I was playing back the video and when it got to the part where a connected clip edited with a transform effect spins across from top left to bottom right, there was a large red box with the yellow warning icon instead. It said an effect called sunny morning was missing, and since I didn't know what to do I closed down FCP X and ejected the drive, then grabbed my MBP and started up final cut along with the drive to see if I'd get the same problem. Well I didn't, it plays back just fine with everything there. Is this just a little bug or is there an explanation for it? I did not start up on my mini again and will not until I figure out what it might be. Thank you

Here you go. I don't know exactly what I did to make the timeline clips disappear, but I was trying to find the effects clip and that's how it happened. I know I used the relink project files option to do so, and after that I couldn't find anything. I've checked everything and everywhere including trash, but nada!

  • AirTunes works for one Mac, not the other...

    Hi all,
I have an AirPort Express that connects to our 2WIRE WiFi network. My mid-2008 MBP running iTunes 9 and OS 10.5.8 connects flawlessly, but I have a mid-2005 iBook G4 that I use as a file server that is now having trouble connecting to the remote speakers. It is also running iTunes 9 and OS 10.5.8, and I encountered the connection troubles right around the time iTunes 9 was released.
Firewall settings are the same on both computers, but is there anything else I should compare between the two machines to see what's allowing the MBP to work while preventing the iBook from working?
    Thanks!

For anyone that may run into this problem, I went into the 2WIRE router settings and opened up TCP ports 548-554 on my Airport Express. All is running smoothly now!

  • Two email accounts, one password for both. will check one but not the other. Have had no problems before

I have 2 email accounts for 2 people. TB will download mail for one but not the other. It can't authenticate the password. Passwords are both the same. Worked fine until today.

The amount of information makes it somewhat hard to give a specific answer. I could only recommend:
    * Can you log into the account using the webmail service from your provider?
    * Have you verified the settings for the account to be correct (protocol, port number, password encoding)?
The following page gives you a good start with resolving this issue:

  • When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.

When exporting and then importing Apple Mail from one mac to another I get "Some messages could not be imported. Partially imported mailbox will be labeled IMPORT" . That mailbox does not appear.
    Any help would be welcome

This is a bug in Mail. The mailbox archiving function does not include attachments, which  gives the error with the import. To workaround this you can create a mailbox in Mail and copy to it all emails you want to export. Then go in Finder to [user]/Library/Mail/Mailboxes en select the created mailbox. Copy this to the public directory of your other mac. Then start Mail on that other mac and import the mailbox from the public directory. Should work now.
