Getting movies off ATV

OK, I have never written on any discussion forum before but I am at a total loss and none of the Apple technical staff (phone or store) seem to have the answer.
I started buying movies on my Macbook through iTunes a few months ago. I got a little carried away and bought a lot of movies. All of a sudden my hard drive was full and could no longer download the remaining movies I had bought.
I bought an Apple TV hoping to put some of the movies I bought on there, delete them from my Macbook and download the rest. I synced these movies but found if I deleted them from my hard drive they would remove themselves from my Apple TV. Not ideal.
Then my hard drive failed completely. I lost basically everything - including the movies I had already put on my Apple TV. Strangely enough the movies I had yet to finish downloading reappeared in my iTunes.
So, I now have movies on my Apple TV, movies on my iTunes but do not know how to marry the two together. My Macbook hard drive is a mere 160 GB so I cannot keep everything on there.
What should I do?
People have thrown out suggestions like a media server, time capsule or buy a second computer. My main problem is I don't know how to get the movies off my Apple TV. Whether it be to keep them on something else or just to back them up!
Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

You don't need quite so elaborate a system. I have my iTunes library on a 500MB external hard drive connected to my iMac. All you would need to do would be to copy your iTunes library to the external drive and then change the location of the library in the iTunes preferences.
The only word of caution I would give is to be sure that the external drive is connected to your MacBook when you open iTunes, otherwise you will get file not found errors if you try to access any of the files, or if it tries to sync to your Apple TV.
Regarding the movies that are currently on your ATV, you will lose them the next time you sync it. If they are movies you bought from the iTunes store you might contact iTunes store support and ask if you can download them again. If they are movie files you made yourself you would have to import them into iTunes again, assuming you have them backed up somewhere.

never heard of such an 'effect'..
firewire is quite more than just a plug (sidenote: there are two diff. fw-plugs, fw400 and fw800.. but your device doesn't offer both - be careful! don't force to push into some other, non-fw port!). fw is also a 'protocol', which allows your Mac to remotely control your camera. Or not.
so, only chance to narrow down failure options: if possible, use your cam and your cable at some other Mac/Pc and try to import/control device.. if not possible=cam kaputt .
if it works with other computers - something's wrong with Mac/iMovie..

  • How do you get movies off one itunes library, and into another.

I recently bought a dvd, and it had a free download for itunes to i uploaded it. On a different user, on the same computer, i have another itunes library in which i have all my music. It didn't transfer this purchase, and is there i way i can get the file into my itunes library?

Open your other library, go to File>Add to library and navigate to the folder containing the files you want to add. Once they are in your new library delete them from the other library making sure that when you get the prompt to move them to trash say no. You should also back your purchases up to disc or to an external drive so you don't lose them of anything happens to your hard drive:

  • How do I get movies off my ipad to my computer?

I have a video on my iPad that appears in the Movies section. It is a home video not one I purchased.
How do I get this onto my iMac or PC?
It does not show up in iTunes on my computer in Movies, Videos or anywhere else, but is playable only on my iPad
I put it into my iPad from my PC, but my hard drive blew out and I had to replace my computer. The file is only on my iPad not now on my new computer.
Please help - this is an important video I do not wish to loose, but I just cannot see how I can transfer it.
    Many thanks

No, these options do not work.
The video was loaded into "movies" on my iPad from my PC before my PC blew up. They do not appear in photos or videos so do not appear in iPhoto.
It's as if Ipad is treating it like a movie I have purchased.
If I try and sync my movies itunes tells me that the contects on my iPad will be replaced with the iTunes on my new PC. but my video is ONLY on my ipad
    Please hlp .

I have a Sony XR500 video cam and i'm trying to download it from the camera to iMovie HD. But when I iMovie keeps defaulting to iSight which leads me to believe that it doesn't recognize the camera. Please help! Thanks.

iMovie HD works only with tape based DV or HDV cameras.
In order to edit AVCHD video, it must be converted. Try VoltaicHD: http://www.shedworx.com/voltaichd

I tried the copy and paste via my computer but when it copies it only shows 0 bytes. So not sure whats wrong. Sorry for not being much help.

  • How do I get the Movies off my new Sony Handycam using iMovie?

WOW! I didn’t think that this would be such an issue!
    So, I purchase a new Sony Handycam DCR-SR42 with a 30 GB
Hard Drive in it. I ask the sales person “Is this camera compatible
with my G5 Mac?” He says, it sure is! I take it home record the kids
around the house, and my daughter’s ballet recidal. COOL!
Then I go and try and downlaod the movies to my Mac. I come to
find out that the 2 cds that came with the camera are pretty worthless!
Sony states in one of the bullet points in the instruction manuel
that the software on the cd will not work on a Macintosh computer.
So, I figured, NO big deal, I will be using iMovie! Unfortunately
iMovie does not recognize the camera when I hook it up, because
it can only hook up using a USB connection. It doesn’t even offer
a Firewire connection, and iMovie ONLY recognizes Firewire.
I then find on one of the cds, a PDF of the Handycam Handbook.
It states in the PDF, that Mac users need to open the disk icon
on the desk top for the camera, and copy the files from the camera
to my hard drive. So I follow the steps and do this. Then I go to
open one of the files using Qucktime, and I get an error message
stating that Quicktime cannot open the file because it could not
    parse it -2048!?!?!
Next, I go to the Apple web site to see if I can find anything to
resolve all this. I find an article “iMovie does not work with muxed
MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 clips” In the article it states that if the files
are MPEG2 Muxed files, iMovie can not support them!
I come to find out that the files are MPEG2 Muxed files. It seems
that the newer camcorders are using this format, because the files
are heavily compressed to allow the camera to cram more data
on the hard disk. The problem is you need some kind of software
to decompress these files in order to use them, and Sony doesn’t
    include it for the Mac!
After more research I find - QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback on the
Apple web site. I purchase it for $19.99 from the site hoping this
will be the answer. Nope! It allowed me to open the movies in
QuickTime, and copy them into iMovie but they are only the
video portion. They have NO audio!
Anyone else run into this whole pile of BS?!?!!? If so, were you
able to figure out a work around? Or, are you stuck with a cool
camera full of movies, with NO way of getting them off with
sound? Well. unless you find someone with a PC that has
a DVD burner in it! Man, that thought scares the ---- out of me!

Get a nice Sony miniDV camcorder. It is not too expensive; it is small and easy to carry around to shoot your video. Most importantly, it will be instantly compatible with iMovie. You don't have to install any software, just connect it via FireWire (Sony calls this iLink) and you are good to go!
I have had several Sonys and love them. You don't need one with fancy editing capabilities because you will edit your movies in iMovie. Just be sure that it has AV In and Out so you can import and export back to the camcorder.
My current version is the small DCR HC-26. There are newer versions of that HC-30something and 40something. Look at the specs on Sony's website
Some of them require the use of a dock to import and export. I am not really fond of that feature. I like just connecting directly to the camera.

  • What size should my movies be to not get cut off?

I am making a tutorial DVD. I used Snapz Pro to record a bunch of screen capture movies and then edited them together in FCP and exported them as 1024x768 animation movies and they look great. Now I want to burn them to DVD. When I take them as they are and put them on a DVD the top and bottom of the screen get cut off. Can I just resize the movies in QT pro to a different size so they won't cut off? If so what size? Is there a better way?

    Scott,
A mix of this QuickTime Pro: How to Make Picture-in-Picture at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42633 and the following procedure I put together a couple of years ago to use the small movies produced by still digital cameras in iMovie/iDVD:
    1. Create a 640 x 480 black mask with a slightly lighter black 320 x 240 center in Photoshop. Save it as a JPG file.
    2. Open your DiMage X movie in QuickTime Pro. Open the saved mask in another QuickTime Pro player (at 15 fps).
    3. Select the mask clip and edit->select all and then edit->copy
    4. Select the DiMage X clip and then edit -> add scaled the mask
    5. Next, select movie -> get movie properties
    6. Select video 2 on the left box and layers on the right box. Set the layers to 1 (that moves the mask to the back).
    7. Select video one on the left box and size on the right box. Click on adjust. Red hack marks appear around the video. Click on the picture (not the mark) and center the video on the lightened 320 x 240 box.
    8. The video may not completely cover the lighter box, but the hack marks should line up. When you view the movie, if you used a "slightly lighter" black for the center area, you won't a notice a lighter area when played in iDVD.
    9. Export it as a DV stream. Bring it into iDVD.
will give you an idea on how to proceed. Obviously, you will need to come up with your own mask and cut-out size - 640x480 ISN'T what YOU want.

  • If I have a movie on my mac on iTunes how do i get it off my computer and into the iCloud?

f I have a movie on my mac on iTunes how do i get it off my computer and into the iCloud?

You don't need to manually put iTunes Store purchases in the cloud. If that purchase can be stored there in your country, it's done so upon purchase. If not, it isn't possible.
