Go to iTunes and to a playlist/library. go to the song(s) you want to get off your iPod and delete them from your library/playlist by either right clicking the song and hitting clear, or by hitting the delete/backspace button on you keyboard. you will then get a pop-up saying "Do you want to move the selected item into your Recycle bin or keep it in your iTunes Music Folder?"
I think if you move it into the iTunes music folder then you are able to get to it if, later, you would like to retrieve, rather than deleting it forever.
Below that message you will see 3 buttons that say:
Cancel Move to Recycle Bin Keep Files
Depending on what you want to do then click the button.

How do i get music off an old ipod classic into my windows 8 system when it doesn't find the ipod when i plug it into the usb?

    Hi aekdbaker ,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on your iPod that you would like to transfer into your iTunes library on your Mac.
If those songs you wish to transfer were purchased, there are two different ways you can accomplish this. The first way, which does not even require you connecting your iPod to the computer, would be to re-download them from iTunes in the Cloud directly to your iTunes library. Directly connecting your iPod to your Mac to transfer purchases is an option as well. Instructions for both methods of gathering your past purchases in your iTunes library on your Mac are available in the attached article.

  • Does anyone have suggestions for a legitimate file extracting program? I need to get music off my old IPod (the ITunes it's on is on an old computer that no longer works) and onto my new computer so I can download it to my new IPod.

    Thank you!

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Getting music off of an iPod classic

    Hi Everyone,
    Heres the situation:
I have an Ipod classic (5th Gen I think, white, 60gb) that I used for almost three years no issue. I have tons of music on it. My dock cable developed a short and it took me a while to figure that one out. Obviously something got messed up because it wouldn't (and still won't) connect to my computer ( I get the USB not recognized message when I connect it). It will play all the songs.
I can get it charge on my car charger through much manipulation. After a few months of headache I bought a new iPod classic. I didn't back up my old library (stupid I know) and now I only have a fraction of the tunes I like on my new iPod.
    Question.
Is there anyway to get the songs off of my old iPod onto my computer? I googled it and read through most of the software descriptions, but it seems at one stage or another the computer has to recognize the iPod in some fashion and mine won't
    Thanks for your help

  • How do you get music off of your Ipod that is not wanted?

My ipod has automatically taken all of my music from my itunes library. However there is some music that I do not want to have on it. How do I take selected songs off the ipod? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Use your iTunes preferences (on the top menu bar: iTunes->preferences->ipod
(with your iPod connected to the computer) and change the transfer preferences to specific play lists or set it to manual update (see below for deleting individual songs). I have several play lists on iTunes which I automatically update to the iPod.
(from the iTunes HELP file under "ipod preference, deleting songs..."
Deleting songs from your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle
You can remove individual songs from your iPod, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle. (Deleting a song from your iPod does not delete it from your iTunes music library.)
    ¥
To delete a song from your iPod or iPod mini, first make sure the player is set up to transfer songs manually (in the iPod pane of iTunes Preferences). Then select the player in the Source list, select the song you want to delete, and press the Delete key.
    ¥
To delete a song from your iPod shuffle, make sure your iPod shuffle is attached to your computer, then select the song you want to delete in the iPod shuffle playlist, and then press the Delete key on your keyboard.
For information about setting up your iPod or iPod mini to transfer songs manually, search "iTunes and Music Store Help."

  • How do I get music off an old iPod and put it on a new iPhone?

I have an older model iPod that was synced to my computer back in 2007. Obviously that computer is LONG gone. What I'd like to do now is transfer all the music off the iPod to my new iPhone but I can't figure out how. I downloaded iTunes and plugged in my iPod and iPhone but it hasn't seemed to help.
    How do I do this?

See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

    Hello SarandipityVegas
You can only transfer purchases that were made from the iTunes Store to your new iTunes library or download those purchases directly from the iTunes Store.

  • Can I get music off a corrupted/broken ipod nano at the apple store?

My Ipod nano had a cracked screen soon after I first got it and the screen was replaced.
My second Ipod nano screen began lifting up in the corner awhile ago, I thought nothing of it until it snagged on a persons clothing and tore the wire ribbon, taking the screen clean off.
As I ran out of space on my old computer, I had to delete all of my music, the ipod was the only way that I stored it, I tried to connect the broken ipod to my new computer to get my music back but it now claims to be corrupted.
If I take it to a store, will they be able to get my music off and onto a pen drive for me? how much will this cost?
The ipod has no warranty due to being a replacement for a fire hazard first generation nano.

No, if you are getting a message that the iPod is corrupted there is no way to retrieve your music.

  • Is there any way for me to get my music off of my iPod?  I had to get a new computer and no longer have my files...but most are cds

Is there any way for me to get my music off of my iPod? I had to get a new computer and no longer have my files, most of it is cds...

Your iPod can only be synced with one computer at a time.  If you try to sync it with a new computer/iTunes library, it will replace the contents of the iPod with whatever is in the new library. You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabling the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Before doing anything else,  authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account.  In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials. Either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync.
Then right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
    iOS: How to back up
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc.  For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases.  For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device
Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier.  Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

If you do happen to lose any purchased content, you can always redownload it from the iTunes Store again at no cost via iCloud.  See this article for information.
