Getting my first external hd -- my questions are probably easy

Hi.
The questions I have are probably pretty easy, and have probably been answered here before, but, I wouldn't even know what to put into a search to bring these answers up. . .
I'm getting my first external hd. I'm wondering if once I have some media backed-up to it, if I'll be able to use applications on my home computer disk to open the files (be able to play mp3s on the external drive in iTunes, namely). A sub-question is - would it be possible to just install my os on the external and boot from it (this isn't important, though)? Also, if any of this is possible, is it terrible to run the external all day as I do my iBook?
I guess this hd isn't even really for back-up, but for more space, really. I just don't want to try to install a new internal hd myself, I don't want to have to send my computer in, and this drive will eventually be for back-up, anyway.
One last thing. Should I just browse around the Apple online store for this hd, or could anybody point me toward someplace cheaper (looking to get one that's at least 250 GB)?
Thank you for any help in advance,
Daniel

You will be able to use your external hard drive to open files from. Example of iTunes:
* If you organise your music folder so that all music is moved to a central location you will have to move your iTunes music folder to your external drive. See:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
* If it is set so your music stays at its current location when importing then all you have to do is import files from your External HDD.
If it is a firewire (not USB) hard disk you can install/Boot Mac OS X from it. It is fine to run OS X permanently from your external HDD although it may be a little slower than running off your internal hdd drive.
Note on new intel macs you can boot off USB drives, PPC macs like your iBook need firewire.
Good Luck!

I'd just like to say that ahs70's post on Dec 1, 2013 at 1:17am on Pg. 9 worked for me as well: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5338609?start=120&tstart=0
If your iPhone's battery is acting up you need to determine if it's a software issue or a hardware/battery issue.  To do that, after syncing your iPhone, erase/hard reset all data and settings from your iPhone to what it was from the factory as new.  This can be found in Settings/General/Reset/Erase All Content and Settings.  Then test it out for a day or two.  If it's still acting up then it's likely a hardware issue and you will need to get your battery replaced.  If your warranty is done than check out this link to get a battery kit to replace your iPhone battery yourself:  http://www.ifixit.com/Store/iPhone/iPhone-5-Replacement-Battery/IF118-001#produc tDescription
If your iPhone is now working properly after hard resetting it than it's most likely a software issue.  This battery issue only started after upgrading to the new iOs7, so it is obviously related to the update not properly installing itself.  What has worked for me and many others is to manually update to iOS 7.0.4 using the full downloaded version of the update which is about 1.32 Gigs.
But first you need to find out what model of iPhone you have, click here to determine if it's GSM or CDMA: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Then go here and scroll down to download the iOS 7.0.4 complete update for your device:  http://www.downloadios7.org/download-ios-7-0-4-ipsw-file.html
Then scroll up on the download page and follow the instructions of updating your iPhone manually following the instructions below:  "IPSW with iTunes"
    And your done.
    Problem solved.
I only posted this because it was a very frustrating problem that no one really seemed to figure out a solution for.
    I hope this helps.

My wife and I have a family account at Verizon and are thinking of both getting the IPhone 4S.  My question is can we both use all of the features of Icloud with one account at Verizon or do we need to have separate accounts?

If Mail in Mavericks is the same as earlier versions you can select accounts in the sidebar, so that you can either display the inboxes for individual accounts, or the contents of all the account inboxes. (If the accounts don't show click the disclosure triangle next to 'INBOX'). The layout may have changed since the version I have - Snow Leopard - but you should be able to do the same thing.

  • When website or messages are opened that include pictures, all we get is a blue square with question mark I the centre. No pictures

When we access a site,or receive email with pictures we often get a blue square with a question mark in it, no picture ?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

You should reinstall OS X. See the following for reinstalling instructions for Lion/Mountain Lion or Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

to download an App the 3 security questions are required. But at the end, apple is not able to complete the task and gives an error message. No more downloads are possible. What can I do?

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode?

I have replaced my ibook hard drive but when I start up I get a folder with a flashing question mark. I have tried installing the OSX disk using the "C" key but can't get any further than the flashing "?." What do I do? What is the problem?

    Which iBook do you have?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1772?viewlocale=en_US
Which version of the OS is installed, and which version are you trying to install?
You could try starting up with Startup Manager and see if it will allow you to select the OS X install disc as the startup disk. If so, maybe you can proceed from there. I would recommend repairing the hard drive first since you are evidently having a bit of a problem with it.

  • Hello. I keep my IPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled). Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Howtoresolve?

Hello. I keep my iPhoto library (about 90GB) on an external HD and am trying to back it up to another external drive. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled) and both check out when scanned with Disk Utility. Recently, backup has failed from the start due to error 36. Any ideas how to  resolve? Also, what's the maximum recommended size for an iPhoto library file? Thx!

Since you can't drag the library to the other EHD for the backup see if you can duplicate it (if you have enough room on the drive) by selecting it and typing Command+d (duplicate).
If you do rebuild the library without a backup and it goes awry you won't lose your photos but you may lose your orgnaizational efforts. So try the following:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library in the location of your choosing  based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
NOTE:  Fix 2 above might be the method you might want to try first with iPLM creating the new library on your second EHD. If it works that would get your backup copy on the second EHD at the same time as repairing it. If it does'nt work then go back to Fix 1.

  • Repair Problem with Excel Removing All But First External SQL Query Tables

We have an Excel 2007 XLSX workbook that we created for doing some business analysis from the SQL database that contains data from our MRP system. It started as a single sheet with one data connection running a SQL query. The data comes into
the spreadsheet as a table and there are some basic row and column sums being done.
After getting the first version up and running without problems, we decided to add some additional sheets to the same workbook. Since each of these additional sheets had only slight variations to the SQL query and the formatting was all to be the same, we
simply copied the first sheet and modified the data connection for each successive sheet (each copy automatically created a copy of the data connection as well). Everything seemed to be up and running properly, so we saved and closed the workbook.
A little bit later, the same workbook was re-opened and Excel reported that "Excel found unreadable content in '<file name>'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes." If Yes
is clicked, then Excel indicates the repairs that were made. Only one was made for each sheet beyond the first and that was "Removed Part: /xl/queryTables/queryTable2.xml part. (External data range)". The result was that the data connection
was deleted from every sheet other than the first and only static data left in place.
We thought it might have actual been some corruption, so we deleted the static sheets and recreated them the same way. After saving and closing, re-opening the file resulted in the same problem. It seems that Excel is somehow saving data that it can't read
when it opens. I would think it could be something in the SQL query, but all sheets have essentially the same SQL query, so I'm not sure why the first sheet survives. As a result, I think it must be something that it does in copying the sheet and the corresponding
data connections, but I'm not sure.
I think this might be some kind of bug, but would like to know if anyone else has encountered a similar problem and found a solution. A few internet searches didn't give me much to check out.
    Thanks in advance,
    indyvql

    KR,
Thanks for your response. I don't think it applies in this case since the file was created brand new in Excel 2007 and used in the same. There was no 3rd-party program involved. I'm also not migrating from 2003 to 2010 as the stellarinfo.com article
suggests. Some of the other suggestions there also don't make any difference as all the data links are lost on opening the worksheet, so copying and pasting doesn't do any good.
I tried to create a simple example by creating a new workbook with a sheet with a very simple SQL query ("select * from X where a > b"), but in that example it worked fine. I'm guessing there is something key about the much more complex SQL query
in my original file with the problem, but I'm not sure why it would only affect copies of the data connection and not the original data connection itself.
    Thanks,
    indyvql

libdownload is our ancient fork of libfetch -- do not use it. It's not even the same library, and it required buildsys changes to use. Honestly, I don't recommend libfetch either. Looks to me like you didn't build pacman with internal downloader support at all.
You won't find a tarball of libfetch anywhere because its part of NetBSD core. Arch keeps a snapshot, which you can download.
Regardless, I suggest looking at our PKGBUILDs for sane build time options: 4.0.1, 3.5.4

  • HT5312 these security questions are terrible

can i take these security questions off my account? they are dumb questions that i dont know the answers to, i had like 10 best friends when i was younger, never bothered choosing a favorite teacher, my favorite colour changes all the time, i dont remember the first album i bought. all these questions are irralevent, i just want to spend money on iphone apps, why does it have to be such a process, please please please, for the love of convieniance and simplicity, get rid of these security questions.

Most of the people on these forums, including myself, are fellow users - you're not talking to iTunes Support here. They should only be asked on the firs purchase from a new computer or device, but if you don't want to use them then you can try using the 2-step verification instead : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570
If you can't remember your current answers and you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account then you can try going to https://appleid.apple.com/ and click 'Manage your Apple ID' on the right-hand side of that page and log into your account. Then click on 'Password and Security' on the left-hand side of that page and on the right-hand side you might see an option to send security question reset info to your rescue email address.
If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then see if this user tip helps : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4551
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then try Apple ID Account Security
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
