Getting my photos back?  Help!

Upgraded to 5.1.1 and the upgrade bricked my iPhone 4s.  So I did a restore from iCloud but I'm only getting 70 photos of the hundreds I had stored in the camera roll.  What gives?  I can see in my iClous account the photos are there but they're not being pushed back.
Any thoughts?

This seems to be a common problem reported by many users.  I'd guess that they're lost at this point.
How did the upgrade brick the iPhone?  Was is jail broken?
