Getting network to activate personal hotspot

Hi all,
I am currently on contract with a network called Jersey Telecom. Having upgraded to 4.3 I have the options for personal hotspot, but when I try to activate it, it says to contact my carrier.
I have been into the 1 and only Jersey Telecom shop, and they have no clue what Im talking about, and use the standard 'its not available in Jersey'. However, having come from Android and using Wi-Fi hotspot for months I know its available.
What can I do to get my network to activate this feature? Do they need to contact Apple personally?
Thanks.

I assume you are referring to a carrier in the U.K. as opposed to New Jersey, U.S.
Did you get the phone through them? I don't think I've seen a reference to them as far as official carriers of the iPhone.
I'm guessing you purchased your phone elsewhere and are using it with their network. That's fine if so, but not all features may function, including personal hotspot. Only your carrier can address this issue. Not all carriers support this feature, even among the 'official' carriers.

I had t before and I don't know what I did but its missing. I tried resetting Network settings, restoring but nothing works.

  • How to activate personal hotspot

Please tell me how to start using the personal hot spot feature.. It says contact carrier however the carrier Idea cellular has no clue about this feature and they say its a phone feature so please contact iphone customer care.. Any tips.. Idea Cellular user in Pune circle..

Personal Hotspot is a feature that requires carrier support. If you are in India, there are 2 supported carriers. Aircel and Airtel. Both of them support this feature.
Idea is not a supported carrier.
Switch to a supported carrier if Idea can't figure out how to activate it.

  • Can't activate Personal Hotspot on iPad 4, but can on iPhone 4...

    Hello -
I have the new iPad and I can't get the personal hotspot to turn on. It simply has the round 'busy' icon and no on/off switch. The strange thing is that this works fine on my iPhone 4 with the same carrier (b-mobile in Bhutan).
Has any one heard of this before?
It seems strange that it will work with my iPhone and not my iPad..
    Thanks!
    Kyle

Thanks for the advice. The hotspot setting is under settings, cellular data, and then personal hotspot. On mine, there is no on/off switch, only a round busy wheel that turns with no end.
I will check with the carrier over the next few days, but it seems they support the iPhone with Personal Hotspot and not the iPad..
That just seems odd.. Why one and not the other?

  • IPad can't find ANY wifi networks or personal hotspot each time I return to my home network

I have an iPad 2 as well as iPad 4, iPhone 4 and Macbook Pro. Each of these connect fine to my home network, however my iPad 2 suddenly couldn't find any networks or my iPhone 4 personal hotspot, bluetooth or wifi.
I went to Singapore and hey presto, it could find and connect to wifi networks with ease.
Then I came home to Australia, couldn't find any networks or personal hotspots again. Went to work, same issue, couldn't find the network at work. So took it to the Apple Genius Bar and it worked automatically again without changing any settings. Reset to factory settings just incase this somehow helped getting it home.
Took it home, worked fine. Recovered from a previous backup and still worked fine.
Brought my ipad into work yesterday, couldn't find my personal hotspot or wifi networks. Took it home, can't find any networks. Reset my modem and it still can't find any networks (or my personal hotspot) even though all other devices automatically connect.
Any suggestions? I suspect when I take it to Japan next week it will probably work fine, then I'll come home and it probably won't. Is it some sort of software issue? Why would it stop working every time I take it out of my home network and bring it back?
I have all the latest updates.
Thanks in advance and reading through!

Does the ipad have any management software put on by your workplace ? If so this my be somehow disabling your wifi. The other thing it may be is the wifi channel your wifi is broadcast on but as it happening to you with a lot of access points it prob isn't this it may be a hardware issue, you could take it To an apple store and if it works there try connecting it to your phone. You could also try this, go to general > one of the last options (between VPN and reset) is profiles (This only shows up if u have profiles installed) if you have profiles go into it and delete the profiles then restart. this may help. Good luck

  • Personal hotspot working via BlueTooth but NOT working via wi-fi

    Hi,
Would appreciate some help with this! Using an iPhone 4, just upgraded to iOS 4.3, and trying to get personal hotspot working.
Basically, see subject ^ .. I can't get it working. Devices (I've tried iMac, iPad) can see the wireless network created by the iPhone, begins to connect (and appearing connected, from the iPhone) but isn't actually online. Though, I was able to pair my computer and phone and create a network connection via personal hotspot that way. But I want to use wifi, and let others use it...
I'm on Bell Mobility in Canada. Any help greatly appreciated!
    Chris

    Hi lofive,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an issue with devices not being able to connect to a Personal Hotspot created by your iPhone. Try the suggestions in the article linked below, it provides a lot of great troubleshooting tips that will resolve most issues like the one you’ve described.

  • Personal Hotspot Security - Flaws?

As a business user, I initially liked the idea of the Personal Hotspot as a convenient way to link my iPhone and MacBook Pro. However as a networking specialist, I am immediately aware of its shortcomings and risks, risks that are already well known in WiFi circles and no attempt seems to have been made to eliminate these and make Personal Hotspot safe to use.
It is 'Personal!'. It is my hotspot! Therefore:
1/ Don't broadcast my SSID - allow me to turn it off so people don't see my hotspot.
2/ Lock what devices can attach (e.g. via MAC address &/or other security code) . Use the cable tether and iTunes to lock my MacBook Pro to my iPhone so only devices I pre-select can use the Personal Hotspot.
3/ Encrypt the traffic. There is a lot of sensitive data on both MacBook and iPhone, so I don't want the two exchanging such data on an open wireless connection. Give me the option to encrypt it!
4/ Time-limit the Personal Hotspot session and include auto-terminate. When I close my MacBook Pro, suspend the Personal Hotspot session. e.g. when I disconnect the USB cable, my tethering automatically ceases, the same should happen when I close my MacBook. I don't want the Hotspot running when I don't need it.
5/ Enhance the WiFi control panels for all Apple devices to simplify WiFi associations. Here in the UK, all BT Home and Business WiFi devices are also public subscription WiFi Hotspots. They annoy the **** out of me as my MacBook Pro and iPhone will try and join these public hotspots, thus my 3G and other WiFi networks that I want to connect to get interrupted consistently. There is currently no way on either the iOS or OS X to tell the system to remember to ignore certain SSIDs. Imagine being at an Apple convention with thousands of Apple devices with Personal Hotspot activated? It would be impossible to select your own particular device from myriads of others.
6/ Corporate Security teams are going to have heart attacks! It is bad enough trying to identify a rogue WiFi access point that has been attached to the internal network, never mind hundreds or thousands of corporate and non-corporate iPhone users whose device has just been upgraded to iOS 4.3 with Personal Hotspot active. What measures do Apple offer to enable these corporate security guys to ensure sensitive corporate data doesn't get hacked via the Personal Hotspot function (with an open portal to the internet on every single unit) they have just dropped into every workplace on the planet?
7/ Ability to reduce the transmit power of the Personal Hotspot WiFi to 1 metre instead of the standard. If my phone and MacBook are next to each other, I don't need to have the high transmit power of a normal WiFi device. If the Personal Hotspot WiFi signal can be turned down to the bare minimum, it will preserve battery life on the iPhone as well as reducing the mass interference in the 2.4GHz band that will be created by dozens of such devices. If transmit power is not reduced, the effectiveness of existing devices such as access point networks will be severely impacted to the point where some WiFi service networks will become unusable.
Anyone have any other wireless security concerns about the new Personal Hotspot feature?

You're only speaking to other iPhone users here - not anyone that has any ability to do anything about your concerns.

  • HT201270 I am unable to use personal hotspot in iPad 3

I am unable to get the settings as personal hotspot .

Does your carrier support it on the iPad (even if they support it on the iPhone they don't necessarily also support it on the iPad) ? You may also need to contact them in case it's an extra fee/subscription, and it should initially appear under Settings > General > Network > Personal Hotspot (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4517)

Well you can't connect to 2 networks at the same time. So just choose either or.

  • Does OS6 change personal hotspot performance?

My MacBook seems to connect to my iPhone personal hotspot, but it cannot access the internet or get mail through it.  I recently installed OS6.

I have the same problem. The SSID is not broadcast. When I tried to connect through Bluetooth, it gave me an error saying it can't connect to the bluetooth network. I have iOS 6.0.1. It started happening on 11/19.
I tried resetting network settings and it didn't help.
I tried restoring my phone and set up as a new phone. Interestingly enough, when i do this, it's stuck at the Set Up Personal Hotspot step, where it always prompts me to either call ATT or go the website. I have the 5GB personal data plan, btw. I called up ATT and they verified there's nothing wrong with my plan. They opened up a case number and promised to get back by 11/22. I'm not holding my breath.
However, when I restore my phone to an existing backup, it gets me to the Personal Hotspot screen, where I can toggle it on and off. But of course, turning it on still doesn't work.
I went to Apple store and they told me that several customers have complained about the same thing, but they're still not sure at this point whose fault it is, Apple or ATT. They've escalated the problem to engineering, but don't know when this will be resolved. This is really annoying. But at least I feel much better that it's not just happening to me.

  • Personal hotspot doesn't work.

Hello! After install ios 7 on my iphone 4. Personal hotspot doesn't work.

Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Network, search for Personal Hotspot re-type the APN (type the same APN you use for Cellular data provided by your carrier). It should work.
