Getting New iBook Logic Board -- help? :)

Well I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, so I also put it in the 'Peripherals' forum.
Ok, here is my problem. I bought a G4 iBook 1.07ghz with a bad logic board from someone on craigslist. I am wanting to put a G4 1.33ghz logic board in it now. I found one on pbfixit.com for $550, but I also spoke with someone on ebay that said he thinks he has some 1.33's laying around. I am wanting a logic board with the two-finger-scrolling and the 'shock detection' features; also Bluetooth2.0edr and Airport Extreme. Well I asked the guy on eBay if he knew if his 1.33 boards had these features or not and he wasn't sure. Is there something he can check (model number/serial number/something physically on the board/etc) to see if he has any of the boards that's new enough to have these features? I'm not as worried about the Bluetooth+Airport Extreme because I found a module board on pbfixit with both of these in one.
Thanks!

Hi, abburke. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
(I have lots of Burke cousins, since my cousin in Wichita had six sons.)
If the iBook is circa 2001 like the iPod, chances are that's the reason the tech says you're out of luck. There's a three-year limit on the program.
Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call. If your iBook qualifies, it's a free fix.
If you are past the three-year time limit, try calling and asking for Customer Relations. Ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case. They have been making some exceptions to the three-year rule, but the criteria upon which they make an exception is not public knowledge. It could be how nice you are to them on the phone; it could be which tech you get; it could be which side of the bed the tech got out of on the morning that you call.
Good luck!

  • IBook logic board - Apple service - kinda long, sorry

I am a converted PC user who got my iBook in September 2002 because, frankly, I was tired of dealing with the poor performance, terrible service, and general glitchiness of my old pc's. So a few of my friends encouraged me to try out a Mac. So I did and I fell in love with how it just seemed to work!
I've had my iBook for just over 3 years, and have had a good amount of problems. It occasionally would boot up to the sad face and I'd have to go through the whole process of reinstalling the OS while on the phone with AppleCare. This past summer, I sent the computer back to Apple because it locked up constantly and the hard drive started clicking. After about a month of sending it back and forth, they finally acknowledged that there was a problem with the hard drive (as if the loud clicking wasn't enough) and replaced it.
Ever since then, things have been ok, but glitchy. The screen would freeze, when you opened the notebook up, it would be on a blank screen, etc. Then earlier this week, it started showing lines through the screen, and it would lock up. Upon restart, it would restart with a blank screen. I thought it was a gonner.
So I looked online to try to diagnose my symptoms, and low and behold, I think I know what's wrong. The iBook logic board description on http://www.apple.com/support/ibook/faq/ explained my sympoms exactly. So I spent an hour on the phone with customer service yesterday trying to figure out if they'll fix this. And alas, they said despite the fact that the logic board may have been failing after the July repair and despite that I've just barely exceeded the 3 year limitation for the logic board repair, they will not repair this unless I pay for it. The quote he gave me was almost enough to buy another computer.
So here I am, a guy who came to Apple for a quality product, Apple acknowledges that the logic board they installed in my computer is less than top-quality, but they refuse to replace this inferior component because of an arbitrary 90 day warranty on repairs performed in 90 days and an arbitrary 3 year from purchase date repair on the logic board.
I'm the first one to admit, they don't HAVE to do anything. I just think it's a sad state of affairs when a company that relies so heavily on a fan base, would slap a newly converted fan in the face on his maiden voyage with a Mac. I expected more from this company. If I wanted cheap junk parts in my laptop that would've only lasted 3 years, I would've bought a PC. The PC is cheaper anyway.
Now I sit with a useless shell of a computer at home and try to decide what I want to replace it with. I have to say, I love OS X, I love the simplicity, I love the security, but I'm going to find it very hard to justify it to myself and my wife to buy another Mac. I think this converted PC guy is headed back to a PC where at least you get what you pay for.

    G3 iBook   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

Hi, Nick. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are you willing to try again? Call Apple again, and this time, ask for Customer Relations. Tell them your story and ask them to make an exception to the three-year rule in your case.
Customer Relations likes Switchers, and they are the ones with the authority to make an exception to the rule.
No guarantees, but they just might do it for you, especially if you plead with them, "Please, please, don't send me back to Windows!"
Usually, I advise people not to threaten to go to Windows, because why should they help you if they think they've lost you as a customer? But, in your case, it's a little different.
Personally, I would have to have about four Macs in a row go belly up before I would look to Windows, and, even then, I might just give up computers all together and rely on pencil and paper if I had to deal with Windows.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • Should I repair an Ibook logic board

I can have a 12 inch ibook 1.2ghz if I pay to repair it. It was just 14 months old, had been treated with great respect, when the logic board failed. Needless to say its owner had not purchased any extended warranty. Its owner purchased a new macbook and put the ibook in a drawer because he decided it was not worth the repair. I would use this ibook to replace my old Powerbook 3400c that died finally. I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail. My question is whether it is worth replacing this ibook logic board? Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards, so that subsequent failure is a hit or miss thing? Or does their failure result from other factors so that an ibook that has one logic board fail may have an underlying cause that will lead to subsequent failures? Is this computer worth saving?

I see on the forums that logic board failure is a problem with ibooks and that many people replace one only to have it fail.Although there have been some failures the absolute majority of iBook G4 users have not had any type of logic board failure.
Is there a generic problem with the reliability of these logic boards...
    No
    Is this computer worth saving?
You will need to look at the cost of replacing the logic board versus buying a new/refurbished iBook G4 or new MacBook.

  • Water, Logic Board Help!

    Hey guys,
First of all Thank you for the help...
So basically what I did is spill water on my mac and it shut down automatically, then I quickly opened the back (macpro mid 2010 unibody) to remove the battery but by the time i got in there was a little puff of smoke that same out just like that so I unplugged the battery and let it dry for about 2 days.
Since I have no more apple care and the back was already open I decided (maybe not my brightess idea) to check out the logic board, found a lot of sites with how to take it apart and it was very easy I checked it out and it doesnt look damaged or anything I cleaned it with a toothbrush and basically it looks very well nothing sticky nothing dirty etc. Then I replugged everything in, closed it up and when I pressed on the battery indicator light no the side of the mac nothing happened, then I tried turning it on nothing, then I tried plugging it in and the little green/red light turned on for a couple of seconds and then just dimmed out and then nothing when I plug it in nothing and I still cannot get it to even turn on make any noise or anything...
Does anyone have a slight clue of what might have happened? The HD is fine I got a SATA cable plugged it in another computer etc it work fine.
    I really appreciate the help!
    SR

Used to repair laptops for years,.....you said "there was a little puff of smoke"
Answer, the logic board at the very LEAST is fried,..you blew some micro resistors and likely smoked the untold havoc on the logic.
Looking inside isnt going to solve anything, you CANNOT fix anything,......replace parts yes.....fix NO WAY.
Days of "fixing things" inside laptops died almost 18 years ago.  Things are too small, and its too much fuss.
    everything now is:
    A: find broken
    B: toss broken
    C: install new.

  • Will a 14" iBook Logic board fit inside a 12" iBook?

I've seen pictures of the logic boards on various retailer sites, and want to upgrade my 1.0GHz 12" to as fast as possible. I was thinking about the 1.33 GHz 12" but if the 1.42GHz 14" fits then that would be pretty sweet... does anybody have any insight on this?

    "I really don't think it's worth the bother....just get a 12" one."
Whether or not it is "worth the bother" is soley a matter of what you consider a bother. To some, and I suspect this of the OP, it is very rewarding to do repairs and modifications, and particularliry mods that have not been done before. I say kudos to the OP for trying. It may be cheaper to buy a used 1.33GHz ibook but doing his proposed mod, whether he is successful or not, will make him a little better off than the "can't do's".
In fact, on this forum all I ever read is "have it looked at" or "send it to Apple" or "it is not user replaceable" etc. Nobody here ever seems to entertain the concept of actually doing something for him/herself.

  • Firewire transfer problems on brand new Ibook...HELP

I just fired up my new Ibook for the first time. One of the first thing it asks is weather you want to retreive your info from your old computer. I said yes. I attached the firewire from my new Ibook to my old G3 b/w computer. I held down the "T" as it asked and then waited for the "firewire logo" to appear on my old computer screen. Well, it never did. I restarted and held down the "T" again. Still nothing. I really need all my info off the old computer. Could my firewire its self be bad? Am I doing something wrong? HELP.
A follow up question will be , once I get the "firewire" logo on my screen, how do I transfer the address book, etc.
    thanks in advance

If the Blue & White G3 has Mac OS X 10.1 or newer, you could use an application like Carbon Copy Cloner to clone all of your files to an external FireWire hard drive. You could then attach the FireWire hard drive to your new iBook and transfer your files. You do not have to transfer all your files the very first time you startup your new Mac. Take a look at Knowledge Base Article #25773.
The iBook does not require a "crossover" Ethernet cable if you're going to transfer files between it and another computer. Check out Knowledge Base Article #42717.

  • New To Logic need help using drum samples.

Hey guys im extremly new to logic actually this is my first trip into a mac doing pro audio. Ive been using windows in my studio for years and im trying to learn the ins and outs of Logic right now. My question is im using a set of samples (trigger thru middi usually scored out in staff view) call the steven slate samples usually in windows im using the dr008 to load and trigger them. What would be the equivilent in Logic can i load those samples into ultra beat and trigger them off the staff view?? Again very new to logic but i like what im seeing and i just need come exp. help to get started and cought up to where i was on a PC/Sonar System. Thanx for the help in advance

Isn't the dr-008 great? I wish they had a Mac version.
If you're using midi, yes you could configure either UB or the ESX24 with your samples etc.
The closest thing to the dr-008 that I've found for Mac is either iDrum or Battery - it's fun to play with either in the same way as the DR.

  • Trying to get new iBook set up - frustrated!

So, why, if Apple makes such a big deal about easily being able to transfer data from your old Mac to your new one, don't they include the necessary Firewire cable?
I've been sitting here for two hours trying to get my new iBook up and running. Don't have a Firewire cable so I can't transfer my Internet settings; can't find my Direcway satellite Internet settings anywhere on my old iMac; don't know what the heck I'm doing. And it's almost 2 a.m. and I have to work tomorrow.
    Grrrrr.

Best Buy was out, but I found a Firewire cable at Staples last night and was able to transfer my data from my old iMac to the new iBook. Thirty bucks -- those things aren't cheap!
Now I'm trying to decide the best way to organize my old and new account info on the new iBook, since I now have two user accounts. (Use new one for clean slate? Stick w/old one? Merge somehow?)
I'm also having problems getting connected to the Internet with the new Airport Extreme base station and have posted over in that topic. I was able to connect once successfully last night, so I don't understand why I can't now.
Anyway, thanks, everyone, for your help.

  • Apple AASR asks 336€ for a new macminmi logic board, fare?

    Hi
A friend has this mac mini which seemed to have ram problems, the light would blink on start up and then give in and shut down on its on during the whole start up process.
I re-seated the ram at one point for her and it worked., later we found it doing the same thing.
So i took it for her over to see a Apple Authorised Repair Center., now the guy says it will cost 336euroes ro replace the logic board., does this sound fare to anyone?
It is a first generation mac mini, it had the airport kit installed, 1 gig ramadn ran perfect for a year with a DVI adapter to a beautifull Apple 22" cinema display, the glass ones, not the tin man ones.
can anyone verify if the price for this is right, sounds a bit high and also unfair since you can get a mac mini for around the same price on eBay now.
    here is goes for 100 Euroes less--> http://cgi.ebay.fr/Mac-Mini-1-25-ghz_W0QQitemZ270089360116QQihZ017QQcategoryZ140 199QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

In general a genuine Apple repair of a major item
like a logic board is not going to be perceived as
good value for an older computer.
Selling the computer for parts and replacing it with
new or used might be a better way to go. Or finding a
    third party repair service.
I would imagine that the Apple repair charge involves
over a 100 Euros of labor cost.
any tips to who i can sell parts to?

  • Is it worth trying to get my MacBook Logic board fixed?

I have a late 2008 MacBook unibody, 2GHZ, A1278, suddenly about 2 weeks ago, it just crashed and died (after over 4 years of beautiful service)
When I hit the power button, I can hear the HD power up, but then power down again about 5 seconds later
I brought it to CompuB (Apple authorised workshop in Ireland), and the guy said the logic board was gone!! he wasnt any more specific about what happened, just that it would cost around €1000 to replace.
the visit to CompuB cost me €69
I've seen/read that some places can repair Logic Boards! has anyone any experience of this, would it be worth taking a punt? I dont want to fork out another €50-€100 just for some guy to tell me it's totally fried!
I've since upgraded to a new 21" iMac, so it's not essential the MacBook is fixed, but if I thought I could spend €200-€300 and get it working again, I'd go for it, as I really loved it!!
Apologies if this has been brought up before, I'm new to this forum, and forums in general!
    Cheers.

    Thanks for the reply FatMac
I agree with what you said,
The OS is/was actually Snow Leopard (I think 10.5.8 was Tiger, I had updated to 10.6 a few years back)(my mistake for not saying this),
I had also upgraded the RAM about 6 months ago from 2GB to 8GB, and gained a massive performance improvement - could this have been a factor in the Logic Board's demise?
The iMac 21" will now be my primary mac, however it's a late 2012 model, so the RAM can't be upgraded (unlike the 27") (at least that's what Apple told me when buying it) (a decision I will probably rue in the future)
    I've also got a 2TB TC for back up, and I have loads of external HD's for storage( 2x 1TB, 1x 2TB, 1x 320gb).
I've also just yesterday purchased a Mac Mini, to use an an entertainment system in the front room (I have a spare wireless mouse/keyboard now, so it would be a shame to not utilise them).
So, if the macbook was fixed, it would probably see little use, but would still be used from time to time!
as you mentioned, a connection is formed with a mac (sounds silly, I know, but it just is), and the thought of never seeing her light up again is an awful thought.
I'll hang back for a while, and see how I get on, I got a quote from a place that say they regularly repair macbook logic boards of €250 to repair it, so I'll see how I get on, and if I happen to have a spare few €€€'s in my wallet some week, I might drop it in to them.
    Thanks.

  • New MBP logic board and wireless internet does not work anymore

    hi there
i had to change the logic board in my only 2 years old MBP15". i purchased a new one and put it in by myself (relatively easy task). i still use the same internal HD as this one still works fine, so all data are the same.
however, the new logic board has obviously a different "identity" from my old one, it came with a sticker which says "ethernet ID 001FF3513E7A" which is different from before. this may be the reason i can still access my wireless network at home, but the self assigned IP address prevents me from connecting to the internet. all settings are as before and it worked always without a problem.
all settings were "automatic" before (using DHCP), and i use exactly the same settings again, but no success. i have to add that i use a new mac mini in the same network with absolutely identical settings (automatic) and this one receives a free IP address from the router (which is only in the last number different from the router's), but the MBP shows a totally different IP address.
i could finally fix it switching to "manual" and adding the same IP address the mini is using and just changed the last number, which has to be different from the time capsule i use as wireless device and the mini. like this everything works just fine.
but why does the mac mini perform everything automatic and the MBP (even with the new ethernet ID - and especially since i connect wireless and not using ethernet) is not able to do so?
i worry if i want to use the internet in any wifi hot spot i may run into troubles...
any idea what the difference between these two machines (with identical settings) is?
    thanks and cheers
    george

Thank you. It didn't work unfortunately :((
Here are my router's details (Huawei):
    Product name HG655b
    Device ID 00E0FC-21530307237S0B028701
    Hardware version VER.C
    Firmware version V100R001C02B018
    Batch number RWC3P0.010.29066
    Physical address 5C:4C:A9:A5:41:B0
System up time 0 days 0 hours 15 minutes 56 seconds
I don't have Mac filtering enabled.
Now it doesn't even find the wireless network anymore...
My computer and itouch are connected to WAP, but the iphone could not connect to WAP, but only WEP.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

  • HELP!!! New ibook user needs help really bad

I just purchased a new ibook g3 or g4 off Ebay. I'm new to the mac world but I'm getting into graphic design and the mac is the way to go...anyway....I bought this mac off ebay and all that came with it was the computer and power cord. Now I'm having issues with it and to fix the issues I need the start-up disks or the systems restore disks which I don't have. Can I get those anywhere from Apple or am I S.O.L.? Thanks

Hi mama392! And Welcome To Discussions!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs.
Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the 10.4.7 Combo Update.

  • 1st Generation iMac G5 with new main logic board but now no Bluetooth?

    Greetings:
As an owner of a 1st generation iMac, I can finally report that my iMacG G5 is now working fine since the main logic board has been replaced because of bad capacitors.
A NEW problem has been created. My internal bluetooth no longer works and is not visible in the hardware profile. I suspect that the Apple repair center may have removed my module or that it was attached to the old main logic board. On PC's running MS Windows (XP), there is a "hardware detect" routine.
QUESTION: Can anyone tell me if the internal module is visible by taking the cover off? I cannot seem to find a photo of where or how the module is attached. I can see my Airport module. Regardless, the Apple repair center said to simply bring it back in and they would fix the problem. They indicated that it was a simple software fix. After trying many different software techniques, I still believe they somehow forgot that my computer had BT and it went back with my old logic board.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Jeff

We discovered the problem. After taking my iMac G5 back to the Apple service center, I got to observe the technician remove my G5 cover and bluetooth module.
The problem was due to the fact that the initial technician apparently did not realize he/she broke off the very small connecting pins on the module when he/she removed it from the original main logic board with the bad capacitors. They simply screwed it on the main logic board. They order a new BT module to replace the broken one.
FYI: It is very easy to install the BT module on the main logic board as I observed. No soldering, etc.. The location is directly above the power supply but below the airport card. It is about the size of a postage stamp and is in clear view withou removing any parts.
    Thanks to All....Miriam...

    Hi Matthew,
That is very interesting, I can't say anything except it is possible that Apple might want you to replace your logic board. Anything strange going on with your computer? Any problems? Anything that might have to do with Ethernet, FireWire, USB, or anything like that?
