Getting new iMac soon.... get 750GB or 500GB?

Since the iMac is not easily upgraded I was thinking of getting the 750GB HD. Question for those of you who have the 750GB drive. What drive is Apple using ( Vendor, Model, Cache Size) and how does this compare with the 500GB drive?

Indeed I was quite tempted to get the Seagate ST3500320AS because of the 32MB cache
Yep, I was lookin' at that too, but a Seagate compatibility note (link below)
scared me off. It's probably of no concern to ALU iMac owners with SATA II
internals, but it might be a problem with SATA I internal busses or with
some external enclosures.
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/beforeyou_buy/buying_a_drive_for_amacintosh/
It's an old note and might no longer apply, but I was in a hurry to order a
drive and didn't research it any further than that -- just played it safe and
went with the 7200.10-series ST3500630AS.
... low and behold it now houses a Seagate ST3500630AS!
All Seagate drives have a 5-year warranty. If the HD fails after your Apple
warranty expires, you can get a free replacement just by calling Seagate
and giving them the serial number. I've done it a couple times with dead
OEM Seagates from HP PCs. Tried it once with a WD drive, but they refused.

  • I have a eMac PowerMac4 and use quarkXpress (v 5) and filmaker pro 6 (v 1) and will be purchasing a new iMac soon. Will I have problems using these programs?

I currently have an eMac and will be buying a new iMac soon and need to use the QuarkXpress (have v. 5) and FileMakerPro (have 6 v. 1) software for a current formatted newsletter I produce. While I can get the latest version of FileMaker pre-installed by Apple, Quark is no longer available at Apple. If I purchase QuarkXpress 8 (I have read there are problems with v. 9), will I be able to add my current files to the iMac and have everything work?  Thanks.

I found that the QuarkXPress (v. 5) has the ability to Export and Save As....
I tried save as, but didn't see any way to have it saved as anything other than the Quark.
I also have found this in a apple forum:
This solved my questionRe: Will Quark 7.5 work with the new Lion upgrade?
Aug 31, 2011 7:35 AM (in response to machttps)
Have just installed Lion and Quark 7.5 works well plus Adobe CS3 with the Java Run updates etc very pleased with the new Lion from Appple.
I don't understand how this poster could get Quark to work on Lion, I thought I read Quark requires rosetta to run it (or maybe the Fix for the end of August took care of that). However, this person had the 7.5 already, but I can only upgrade to a certain level while in Tiger, so this apparently is where the problem arises (?).
I also have come across a disc to update Quark to 5.01, but that's not much I suppose.
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

  • Crysis on a new iMac

I'm planning to get a new iMac soon. I was wondering what sort of settings I could expect to be able to use (i.e. resolution, shadows, etc.). I will be getting the 24" with a 2.8GHz CPU, 2GB of RAM, 500GB HDD, and the 8800GS graphics card.

You get a "24-inch (viewable) glossy widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD, 1920 by 1200 pixels, millions of colors" as stated on the complete specifications
    http://support.apple.com/kb/specs/imac24inchearly2008
You set it at other resolutions, but the native resolution stated above will provide the sharpest image. You can also extend the desktop by attaching an external display (a $19 adapter is required).
I don't know what you mean by shadows.

  • Brand new iMac loosing Airport! Very dissapointed!!!

    Hi,
I have a brand new iMac 21.5". The first time I used it, it said there was no Airport installed. I phoned apple support and they told me to flash the pram. After that it found the Airport card.
Now it has lost it again and flashing the pram does nothing. This is very dissappointng - its BRAND NEW I haven't changed anything. Looks like I might have to return it....
    Thanks for any help.

I'm so sorry. It's rare that one needs to send a Mac in for replacement but it can happen. The posts you see here in the AD forums are but 1% of the total Mac sold so please don't get the wrong impression. It's better to send it back now instead of trouble shooting and getting more upset. The Airport card may not have been installed correctly or it's defective. One way or another you'll have a new iMac soon.
*"I spent hours setting up the computer when it first arrived and now I'll have to do that all again. "*
It shouldn't take hours to setup an iMac. Did you check the System Profiler to see if it recognizes the Airport card?
If not and if you haven't already boxed the iMac up, click the Apple Menu then click: About This Mac then click the "More Info" button. That will launch the System Profiler for you. Under Network on the left, click Airport. See if any information shows up on the right.

  • Deciding on new Imac or not.

Hey everybody! I currently own a 2.4GHZ older imac with an ATI 2600 pro in it and 3gb of ram, the 20inch version.
I have an oppertunity to get a new Imac 24inch 8800GS, 4gb ram, 500gb hard driver, and 3.06ghz for about 1600 cdn.
So my question to you is, should I go for it or wait a while? I'm fine with my imac right now, but I'd like to install windows on it and play a few games as well. So what does everyone think about that?

That sounds like a model from the first aluminum iMac line-up. You can upgrade the RAM to 4GB with one 2GB module to replace the existing 1GB module, if 3GB is not enough. That should improve performance a bit. The upcoming Snow Leopard (in a few weeks) will probably make the same Intel 64-bit hardware run better, because it is an upgrade the is focused on optimization in various ways.
You can install Windows on it. Whether the graphics hardware can handle "a few games" depends on the system requirements for those games. If the current system running Windows under Boot Camp meets the requirements, and the iMac is otherwise fine for what you do under Mac OS X, I would keep it and use it as long as possible. I'm sure there will be other good deals in the future.

  • Moving iTunes from external hard drive to new iMac

I will be receiving a new iMac soon. Currently my iTunes is on an external hard drive.
What are the steps I take to move the iTunes from my external hard drive to my new iMac's hard drive?

The PC to MAC move complicates a few things, but this article seems to solve them.

  • New iMac and HD footage?

Will the latest iMac be able to capture and edit HD footage without much problem?
I am thinking about buying a new iMac soon, with all of the upgrades, and upgrade FCP once it comes out universal.
Will an upgraded iMac run HD footage through the latest FCP?
Also, it is my understanding that NO version of FCP will work under Rosetta... is this true? (I currently have FCP 3)

Hi gr8g8r - your Slick plugins will need to be up-dated via the GeeThree site if you have an Intel-based Mac:

  • So many issues - family of 5, i am using my wifes apple id on my iPhone, my daughter is using my apple id on touch, i need to get all iTunes content off an old PC onto new imac and i just got iphone 5 and want to be able to have evreything work - help!

5 plus years ago my wife had the only Apple ID and as a family we all used her Itunes account to buy and listen to music.  A couple years later, I (husband) bought my first iPhone - the only iDevice in the household.  When I set that iphone up, I used the wife's apple ID as I wanted access to all of the itunes music we had as a family.  So now years later, all of my Apps etc have been purchased via the Wife's Apple ID.  To make matters worse for my situation, my 10 yr old daughter got an iTouch for Christmas and i decided to use my actual (husband) Apple ID as daughter is a minor and I felt I could manage her iTouch Apps content that way.  We have just recently bought our first iMac and I had yet to understand or get to work the iCloud or the Home Sharing of iTunes.  To make matters worse, I have never synched my 3G iphone because of the whole Apple ID issue.  I should also mention that the primary 'authorized' computer for my wife's itunes account is an old PC that we almost never use anymore as it runs soooo slow.  So I am left to wonder how to go about making the transition to get the old PC 'deauthorized' after I somehow transfer all itunes files from the old PC to the new iMac.  I now have the new iPhone5 and i REALLY want to get to the point where i have my iphone on my apple id and my wife has her apple id (no iphone for her yet - probably coming soon though).  On the new iMac i have created a login for me and one for my wife.  I was able to login to itunes on her imac login and i was able to set up iCloud.  it works! - but now my calendar, contacts, photos, etc are on her profile login of the iMac!  HELP me PLEASE!!

Your Apple ID should not be causing problems with your browser. If you describe the problems you are having we might be able to help with those.
    regards

  • Why can't I get Pro Tools LE to create a session on my new iMac?

    Summary
I can't get Pro Tools LE to open a session on my brand new iMac.
    Detail
Pro Tools launches but when I go to create a session it seizes up, the beach ball spins and I have to Force Quit and send yet another note to the Apple teacher. It does this without fail. I've tried to rectify this by saving to different locations and different external hard drives. The problem remains the same.
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, stripping the computer of anything that says "digidesign," etc... it doesn't work.
I am using the same Pro Tools with the same OS and the same Digidesign hardware on a MacBook Pro without a problem. Go figure.

    _The Pro Tools LE Software_
    Pro Tools LE 8.0.3
I know what you're thinking... Snow Leopard is the problem. Right?
But the MacBook Pro has proven that theory wrong. The marriage between SL and LE8 on that notebook works fine.
As for LE on the iMac... At first it was 8.0.1 but now it is 8.0.3.
I upgraded to the supposedly Snow Leopard compatible Pro Tools LE 8.0.3 (pre-release) thinking that just maybe SL and LE8 weren't having as much fun together in the iMac bed as they were in the MacBook Pro. The result was identical -- stuck in Nowheresville.
I've been to the Digidesign discussion boards and the best I've been told so far is that my 3 day old iMac is a dud. On the other hand, away from Digidesign intoxication, some of the pros in the biz around town have said it's probably Pro Tools. Pro Tools they say is, at best, troublesome.
I'm planning on bailing out of Pro Tools altogether eventually and moving to an Apogee Duet with Nuendo 4 as I'm annoyed that I spend more time as an amateur paint-by-numbers technician than actually doing the job I'm paid to do. I'm also unhappy with expensive upgrades, lost paid for plugins due to upgrades and being railroaded into buying Avid gear only as demanded by the software.
But, in the meantime... I'm stuck with it. My own suspicions are that the cause of my troubles is the external hard drive and the FW400>FW800 conversion configuration but I'm not about to blow a few hundred bucks for a new hard drive based on a hunch that may not work. Your thoughts?
Any suggestions other than anything that involves screwdrivers and a cavalier mindset with the just out of the box hardware by a complete novice such as I are most welcome.
    Thanks.

    Hi
    I have the same problem.
First I tried PT8LE 8.0 - didn't even start, afterwards i tried 8.0.3pr (1.25GB) - the same result. Now I downloaded the 8.0.3 normal (1.6GB) and it starts, but after I get to open/create new session dialogue box it just gives me the beach ball of death...
When I force quit PT it won't even start again and gets stuck at loading plugins (and there are just the bundeled one, no third party - it's a clean install of the whole machine).
I too have a week old 27" imac i5 with 10.6.2. On my old 24" with 10.6.1 it's runnig smoothly.
My external drives were off during this so I guess it's not a thing of the FireWire ports.
So I guess it's nothing positive or helpful, but You're not alone with this

I received LR 5 for Christmas but have not downloaded it yet on my computer. I have had LR 3 for about 4 years.  I am due to buy a new computer soon but need to know how many licenses/downloads I will get before downloading LR 5 on my current computer.  I may also purchase a laptop in the next year so that would require 3 licenses altogether (current iMac, future iMac, future macbook).

    You have one license.
You can download and install it on an infinite number of computers, as long as it is only installed on two of your computers at any one time, and in use on only one computer at any given time.
So in your case, current iMac, that's would mean its installed on one computer, no problem. Future iMac and future MacBook ... so if you uninstall from current iMac and install on Future iMac and future MacBook, it's now installed on two computers at a time, no problem, as long as you're not using Lightroom on both simultaneously. And if after that, you got two new computers and uninstalled Lightroom from the previous two, you're still good, it's only installed on two computers at any one time.

  • How can I get Soundbooth back to work on my new iMac?

A while ago I managed to download Photoshop CS on my new iMac computer, which worked fine, as well as Soundbooth. Then out of the blue, adobe asked me for my registration number in order to use Soundbooth. I only had one number, but it was no good (anymore).
Because I needed to work with Soundbooth straight away, I chose the option to use a 30 day trial version, that has now expired. Whenever I try to start up Soundbooth, I am reminded of this, and my registration number is still no good.
I need to work with Soundbooth real soon, I own this product, but I seem to have lost the possibility to get access. Please help me out here!
    Thanks,
    Gerrie

registration numbers don't expire.  what message do you see when trying to use your serial number?

  • Turned on my new imac, can't get past the welcome screen

Won't let me move past it. Tried rebooting while holding down shift key, didn't work, lways comes back to welcome screen. Ima screaming arggggggggg!
product is iMac, latest version of everything, brand new out of the box, from Apple.

    Nope, this didn't help Linc.
I finally got through to AppleCare. Turns out it was a corrupted drive, from the get-go. Never had a chance. Taking it to my nearest Apple Store in the am. to get the geeks to replace it. So young, so young, but it died a noble death. So it will soon be replaced by ImaScreaming version 2.0
Thanks for the help though guys.

  • How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one.
