Getting new Mac for Aperture and have a question...

I totally realize that this is a personal preference with no "wrong" way to do it. However, I would appreciate some thoughts so I can form a better idea of how I will set up an Aperture workflow that will work for me for a long time and how to configure my new iMac.
I use the referenced library workflow and store both my masters and Aperture library on my current internal drive with both backed up to externals. I'm getting a new Mac with the SSD drive for apps and OS (and Aperture library as well). The question is, should I get the mega 2 TB internal HDD along with that SSD for all my masters (which would also include my music and home-made movies)?
My current photo storage adds up to only 130GB right now and grows slowly. I don't even think I would double that in the next year. I realize that if I had, say, a 1.5 TB size Masters library, the the answer would be obvious that I would need to store externally because the iMac HDD isn't big enough. But that isn't my situation.
But since I would be able to fit all my photos on an internal HDD (2TB) to use as referenced, is there a better reason to skip the internal 2TB HDD and just get hooked up with some good, high-speed external system and stick with an internal SSD to just handle the OS, music, and apps? In other words, all my media (photos and movies) would always be stored AND edited from an external drive (I will actually edit on the SSD and then move the referenced files to the external). This means that from now on all new Macs I ever get will only need a moderate sized SSD for OS and apps. I would basicallt forever keep all things media on externals.
I hope this makes sense. Thanks for any help with this.

One other thing... the only way for me to get a 1GB VRAM now is to buy the top-of-the-line iMac. That's the issue.
I've seen that also. That's why I added the "If you can wait.." statement.
If you need to purchase before say late October, then the specs you list for the 21" iMac are quite good and the possibility of developers designing GPU threads that require caching in the VRAM may or may not need amounts beyond 512 MB. The fact that Apple offers an upgrade to the 2 GB VRAM video adapter on their high-end machine tells me that they know that the Pro Apps will be able to take advantage of that amount (not that it is necessary for the enthusiast looking to have a good Aperture experience).
SierraDragon has much more experience than I with Aperture, so he may be able to shed some light on this one.
For my part, I run a 17" MacBook Pro (late 2011) which has the 2.5 Ghz i7, 8 GB Apple provided RAM, and the AMD 6770 with 1 GB VRAM. I installed an OWC 480 GB SSD and I am connected to the Apple Thunderbolt Display (because this machine only offers a Thunderbolt port to connect video signals with). Aperture runs fine on my machine (although for some reason cropping takes a couple of seconds now, where it was immediate before the AP 3.3 update). I run Photoshop CS6 and Illustrator CS6 without any issues on this machine, so it is definitely capable of running in a professional environment.
Since your specs call-out a 2.8 Ghz i7, 16+ GB RAM and an SSD, I personally would not hesitate to purchase that machine if you need to purchase soon. I just mentioned the 1 GB VRAM due to your wanting to be able to handle 4+ years of updates to the OS and software. That doesn't mean the 512 GB VRAM won't work great, just that the 1 GB VRAM would be additional insurance (sort of like Apple Care).

In trying to open a Lightroom catalog on an external hard drive  I keep on getting the message "lightroom cannot use the catalog named " " because it is  not writable and cannot be opened. I have fixed all the "permissions" and yet it will still not open. How do I fix this?

    Hello Forum Members,
I figured it out. You have to select  the actual logo of the Lightroom catalog and then click on  "get info" and allow what ever your new user name to "read and write". That worked!

  • New Mac Pro - Aperture and a massive new project - help me be smart!

I am receiving a Mac Pro 2.66 Friday and adding in 4 GB RAM and 2 500GB HDS, Aperture and Final Cut Studio and a lot of music software. Moving up from a G4 450 DP.
I received a very nice fellowship and will officially begin the project on June 1, continuing until August, 2008. I will be filming in all 92 Indiana counties - mainly nature and historic sites for a few DVD programs for schools in my county. I expect to end up with 30,000 + images when it is all said and done.
Before I begin, do any of you experienced digital photographers have any advice for someone in my position? You know, "what I wish I had known when I started using Aperture" kind of advice.
I use a Nikon D70, 5 various lenses and will shoot RAW. I am an experienced photographer, so I am not looking for shooting tips, etc.
    Thanks for any tips.

That sounds like a great project.
People have already emphasized the importance of backing up. I can't pile on with any more emphasis. Backup, backup, and backup some more. I have five copies of every RAW file I've ever made across four different disks and DVD's. The DVD's are located in a remote location. I had an issue with my hard drives about three months ago that caused all my hard drives to loose their data--complete loss. If not for my DVD's, I would've lost 30,000 RAW files let alone all the processed images.
I'm working an article on my backup strategy that should be published in the next week or so. If you want, send me an e-mail and I'll give you a link to my site when it's done.
This next article is about file naming. I've been using this same convention for 8 years. It works as well as anything. The other recommendations are also excellent especially the ones about adjusting your convention when sending to clients.

This final article is about my initial workflow. I am not a "copy the CF card prior to import" kind of guy. Call me gutsy. Metadata and keywords will be your most important friend during a project this size. Being able to quickly get to images for various purposes will be extremely important. To be a high end, high capacity photographer also means being a data manager. It's a fact of life. Secondly, start early and don't get behind keywording. That will only slow you down later. The key to this in Aperture is using the keyboard shortcuts. Learn those. It'll help lost later.

  • Looking to get a mac for fall semester, have a few questions on which one I should get.

Hello everyone, this is the first time im posting here and i hope i can get some help. Im in the need of a new computer; I have been wanting a mac for a long time and i figured since im a junior in college that i should get myself something decent to finish school with. Any who i have been thinking about getting a refurbished mac for a while now, to me saving a few bucks is always a plus. I was just wondering though, do you guys think i should get one of those older products or maybe get one of the newer models just announced at wwdc? I had my eye out on a macbook pro, but the air has also been looking really nice. Im really having a tough time trying to decide which one i want get. This will be my main computer btw, and i currently do have an iphone and ipad 2 to go along with it. Here are the notebooks i was considering and also i usually will not be carrying it around campus that much.
    macbook pro 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FD313LL/A
    macbook air 13in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC965LL/A
    macbook air 11in http://http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC969LL/A
Hopefully you guys can help me out, im really looking forward to owning a mac. If it wasnt for the os, i wouldnt be considering one, but i just fell in love with it when one of my high school teachers was showing some of the things he could do with his mac. Also if anyone has any other suggestions, please tell me, im all up for new ideas.

I'm in exactly the same boat as you... gonna be using it as my primary computer, graduating college soon, and my first mac. I'll be going with the 13 inch MacBook Air.
The Pro and the Air are nearly identical performance-wise and so that means the only advantage of the Pro is the storage space (unless you count the cd drive as an advantage). The Air is way more portable and has a better display, I don't know about you but my current cd drive rarely gets used so might as well get rid of it.
I have also compared them side-by-side in the store and that was really what won me over to the Air. The 11-inch Air was there too but the screen just seems too small, especially if you are doing work/writing essays etc.
    Hope that helped

  • Can I move my daughter off my account by creating a new one for her and have all her apps/data/music/etc. move to her new account?

I want to split off my daughter from my apple account and set up her own.  Once she has her own account she would like to have her apps/data/music, etc. on her iPhone and iPad under the new account as it was under mine.  Can I set her up a separate account and then move her apps/data/music, etc., to her new account?  If so how do we do this and what are the dangers/pifalls of doing this (if any)?

You can migrate her to a separate iCoud account if you want, but existing purchased media (apps, music, etc.) will still be tied to the existing ID.  Purchased media is permanently tied to the ID used to purchase them.
If you want to move her to a separate iCloud account, you can do that and still continue to share the same ID for iTunes purchases.  The ID you use for iTunes does not have to be the same as the one you use for iCloud.  To do this, start by saving any photo stream photos she wants to keep to your camera roll (unless already there) by opening your my photo stream album, tapping Select, tapping the photos, tap the share icon (box with upward facing arrow, then tapping Save to Camera Roll.  If she is syncing notes with iCloud, you'll need to open each of your notes and email them to her so she can later copy and paste the text into new notes created in her new account.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account (which only deletes it from this device, not from iCloud; your devices will not be effected by this), choose Keep on My iDevice and provide the password when prompted.  Then sign back in with a different Apple ID to create your her account and choose Merge to upload the data.
Once you are both on separate accounts, you can each go to icloud.com and delete the other person's data from your account.

  • I am going to buy a new external hard drive and have some questions first

Although I asked this question several years ago, I would like to ask it again, just if in case technology in general or external hard drives in particular have changed in any significant ways.
I need to replace a 1 terabyte LaCie external hard drive that died on me after a few years.
    1. I am afraid of buying another LaCie. What other brands are reliable? I heard that Western Digital is. Also another brand beginnibg with S (so helpful, I know).
    2. Do I have to look for a drive that is MAC FORMATTED? I vaguely recall this term from years ago. I also remember another term that I was to look out for, but I don't remember what it was. Something like ”chronicled“ but obviously not that.
    3. Should I get more than 1 terabyte? Right now I have an old, old 125 gigabyte LaCie that still lives, but it is so small that it is almost nothing
    4. What do you think about buying external hard drives fron Costco as opposed to from the Apple Store?
    ~L

Ziatron, you wrote ”All you do is open the enclosure and the hard drive plugs in. (done.)“ What enclosure?
This is the enclosure I like, it needs a hard drive to work : http://www.cooldrives.com/ox93saiihadr.html
    But there are many others.
looking at my two dead laCie ext. hard drives and they don't have ”enclosures.“ Just holes in the back to receive the cables.
A hard drive enclosure is a box or case the actual hard drive goes into. Look at the images in the link above. You can see what is inside.
This hard drive goes inside the above cool drive enclosure: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Intellipower-Desktop-WD20EADS/dp/B001RB1TI S/ref=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1258862242&sr=8-1
You recommended getting a hard drive with a Firewire connection, but most of the hard drives have USB.
Well maybe, the better drives are Firewire.
    Should that matter to me?
Yes, Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Is USB a whole lot slower than Firewire if I am transferring materials?
Firewire is faster and _more reliable._
Take a look at the link below, "Build Your Own External Hard Drive". The enclosure I like is easier to use.
    http://www.harmony-central.com/articles/tips/hard_drive/
    http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/externalhdcase.htm
Also you need a Mac Pro to use eSATA, with a iMac use the Firewire port.

  • HT1727 i bought some ringtones on my iPhone, later on i sync my iphone to my old computer now i have a new mac pro desktop and i only have 2 ringtones on my phone but not the rest of them how can i get them back without having to pay for them again?

i bought some ringtones on my iPhone, later on i sync my iphone to my old computer now i have a new mac pro desktop and i only have 2 ringtones on my phone but not the rest of them how can i get them back without having to pay for them again?

If you bought them on your iPad then you will need to connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to the Tones part of your computer's iTunes library and you can then sync them to your iPhone - ringtones are a one-time only download, so you won't be able to redownload them directly on your phone.

I have bought a new Mac Book Pro, and I need to know how I can move Aperture from my old Mac Book to the new one..

    It begins with: F-285-NER-151-QBQ-and continues with 5 more 3 or 4 letters/numbers..
Yes, that is the number. And what version of Aperture have you installed? The same version as on your old Mac?
But it don´t work on my new Mac...
In what way does it not work? Does it require you to enter a licence number for Aperture 2 as well? That will be necessary, if your serial number is an upgrade serial number. Then you will have to enter all previous numbers as well.
Or does Aperture not accept the number as correct? Then check the spelling; some letters are easily confused like "I" and "1" and "O" and "0". Do not use the number pad to enter the numbers.

I am feeling so ripped off right now. I have wanted a Mac for years and believed the hype about it's stability and I have had more trouble with this Imac 2011 than I have ever had with a pc. It locks up with several software products from APP store. I have already had to have a technician to look at it and really couldn't figure out what the deal was.  I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software. This machine is only 4 weeks old and I am using 37 g on a 1 T hard drive. There is no reason for it to be locking up. Also, when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that. I successfully used the help program on my pc lots of times. I did not need a $2000. plus machine to just get email. I just wanted to unload on somebody that might understand my pain and after checking out this site...I think there is a few of you out there.

I was told that the APP store software should give me no problems but the truth is that it locks up on the software.
The apps downloaded from the Mac App Store are written by third party developers, not Apple. If you have problems  with those apps you need to visit the support area for their websites. Launch the App Store, locate the app name. You should see a support link.
when I try to use the help program, it always tells me that I am not connected to the internet even though I have used both the mail program and the browser with no problem just before that
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.helpviewer.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash. Restart your Mac, try the Help menu.
If you need help finding that file, hold down the Finder icon in the Dock then click: New Finder Window. From the menu bar top of your screen click: Go > Go to Folder. Type this in exactly as you see it here:   ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.helpviewer.plist    That will take you right to that file.
(.plist) files stores information about a particular app or in this case, the Help viewer. Often times deleting the .plist file resolves the issue.
It's fine to "unload"... we understand that you expect your iMac to be stable but there are times when things go awry. That's why we have these forums so that you can you get help.
