Getting new MacBook Pro, what to look for once i get it?

i'm moving to Oahu next month, and selling everything to make the move easier. one thing going is my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 with 20" ACD, which i'll be selling soon. so....
i bought a new 15" MacBook Pro 2.16 off ebay as 'new, sealed in box'
just wondering what things i should check for when i get it, in regards to a lot of the problems, etc i've been reading about here.
thanks

Brian, if you look at posts in this discussion forum you will see a number of complaints about the MacBook Pro. If you look at any other Mac model discussion forum you will see a number of complaints about each model.
I have no doubt that some owners have problems, as no consumer device as complex as a computer can be made with zero defects at consumer-affordable prices, if only because they are assembled from many parts, each of which has a tolerance range in its specifications.
My week 12 MBP is perfect. Fast, stable, quiet, perfect screen, perfect fit & finish, good WiFi connectivity and no heat problem. It's been working hard since March 30, 7 days a week. So I have to give Apple an A+ for design, engineering, assembly and QA.
We don't know the actual percentage of MBPs that have had problems. MacNN did a recent survey and reported that about 16% of MBPs had problems requiring service. That's higher than normal, but such polls tend to over-select for problem reports. The major complaint has been about heat, but IMHO heat isn't really a hardware problem for the MBP.
The other major complaint has been a "whine" noise associated with CPU circuitry. Some MBPs are noisy enough to be irritating, especially on battery power. There are user workarounds, but Apple has announced a logic board replacement that can minimize such problems. Mine doesn't whine.
Some people have had assembly problems such as misaligned cases, poorly installed keyboards and what not. Inevitably, a very small percentage of hard drives will fail early -- that's the nature of the beast, even though most hard drives will probably operate beyond their specified operating life.
The odds are that you won't have problems; but if there is a hardware defect Apple has been very responsive and has a good reputation for trying to satisfy customers.
If your computer qualifies for AppeCare, I would recommend it, as that adds two years to the warranty coverage -- and repairs on a notebook can be expensive. I've bought AppleCare for all my notebooks, and have never had to have any of them serviced.

  • Sims 3 crashes all the time on new MacBook Pro, what do I do?

Got a brand new MacBook Pro 13inch (not retina) for Christmas. I was advised when buying the Mac to update the ram if I wanted to use it for playing the Sims 3 (which I did). Previsoulsy I had a Sony VAIO (top spec) in which the Sims 3 worked on for years, however the past few months it started to crash saying "unexspected error". I thought at the time it was just my laptop starting to give in, as I had it for 6 years and was used everyday.
However I have just installed all my Sims 3 discs to my Mac and the exact thing is happening. Im not very tech when it comes to these things, all I can guess is maybe one of the games is corrupt? Or there is something wrong with the disc? I have purchased a new exspansion pack which should be here tomorrow to see if the problem is with the disc I am using now.
Any help would be appreciated, as one of the main reasons I bought my new Mac was because I thought the Sims 3 would work on it efficantley.
    Many Thanks,
    Rebecca

    Rebecca,
have you checked on the EA Web site to see if The Sims 3 requires a downloadable update to be able to run on whichever version of OS X is currently installed on your MacBook Pro?

If you still have the old computer and it is a MAC, the Lightroom 5 serial numbers are in a text file.

  • I have Yahoo Mail synced on my new macbook pro. Keeps asking for password

I have Yahoo Mail synced on my new macbook pro. It it consistently asking to re-enter the password. Does anyone else have this problem? I have deleted it and reinstalled it several times. It did not do this on my previous macbook.

Does anyone else have this problem?
There are several similar reports on this site every day.
I've never used Yahoo mail and my knowledge of it is second-hand. This is what I've been able to gather.
If you have a free Yahoo account, POP access to incoming mail from a mail client such as Apple Mail is not supported. A free account is accessible only through IMAP (and then perhaps only on mobile devices — the documentation is unclear) or the web interface.
As for a paid Yahoo account, or an account through an ISP such as AT&T, you must enable POP access through the web interface. I've seen reports that you must periodically (every two weeks?) log in to the "Manage Account" page on the website to confirm your identity.
I've also seen reports that eliminating all UPPER CASE letters from the password, and shortening it to no more than 7 characters, may help. That's barely, if at all, adequate for security, and you must be sure to choose the password randomly. It should not be easy to type or remember.
That said, so many problems with Yahoo mail are reported that I can't recommend using Mail as a client for it. You might get better results with another mail client, such as Thunderbird. If not, just use the webmail interface. That's how it was designed to work. Better yet, don't use Yahoo at all.

  • HT3224 I am new to Mac and started transferring data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  Connection was lost once I started and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring Information' screen.  How do I get out of this screen to attempt the connection again?

II am new to Mac and was trying to transfer data from my PC to my new Macbook Pro.  The connection was lost however and now my Pro is stuck on the 'Transferring you nformation' screen.  How do I get out of this screen so I can attempt the connection again?  Is it safe to force shut down of my Mac and will it still prompt me through all the setup process again?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your Mac and PC are connected by Ethernet, unplug and plug that cable again. If not, you have to turn off the MacBook by holding the Power button.
In the next startup, try to transfer your files again. It's important not to interrupt the transfer process, because in most cases, you will stop it and you won't be able to resume it

  • HT3231 how do i   TRANSFER MY PHOTOS AND VIDEOS FROM MY MAC PRO POWERBOOK G4 TO MY NEW MACBOOK PRO,  WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY,  THANKS

I HAVE A MAC POWERBOOK G4 AND WOULD LIKE TO TRANSFER MY FILES, PHOTOS AND VIDS TO MY NEW MAC PRO,  WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST METHOD??  THANKS ROB

I think the easiest way is to use a firewire cable (you will need on like this: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=Firewire+400+to+800+cable&oe=utf-8&rls= org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=120962573 04625337030&sa=X&ei=PytQT9r4NtOBsgL9s_C6Dg&ved=0CHYQ8gIwAA).
Power up the Power Mac G4 and hold the "T" key while it is booting (this puts the G4 notebook in Firewire Target Disk mode).  Connect the G4 notebook to the newer MacBook Pro and use the Migration assistant (/Applications/Utilities) OR browse through the files and copy what you want.

  • Buying a new MacBook pro - what specs should I get

Hi, I'm about to buy a new 17-inch MacBook Pro. I will use it for making videos and DVDs. I use Photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Compressor and DVD Studio Pro, often simultaneously. I am wondering which specs to choose for the computer...
2.8ghz or 3.06ghz processor? Does it make rendering much faster?
4GB or 8GB memory? Will 8GB increase speed significantly?
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm or 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm. Again, will it make much difference?
    Thanks!

2.8ghz or 3.06ghz processor? Does it make rendering much faster?
The largest difference it will ever make in any process is less than 10% (the 0.26MHz difference divided by 2.8MHz.) This would not be the best use of your money if you're after greater speed and your budget is too tight to buy all three upgrades you mention.
4GB or 8GB memory? Will 8GB increase speed significantly?
If you are consistently using more than 4GB of RAM in your work now, then 8GB will benefit you significantly in a new MBP.
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm or 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm.
A 7200RPM drive will make a considerable difference.

  • Headphone jack not working on new Macbook Pro what is causing this?

My 17 inch Macbook Pro is less than two weeks old. The headphone jack does not recognize the headphones about half the time. This occurs with several pairs of headphones and yes, they are ther right size. This is really frustrating on a brand new 3500 dollar machine. What is causing this? It almost seems as if the headphones cannot make contact due to the fact that the connection is too far recessed. I don't live near an Apple store so dealing with this is going to be a P.I.T.A. Anyone have any ideas on how I might fix this issue? Thanks!

Hi, and thanks for your reply. I didn't have a red light emitting from the jack. I had already checked in the sound preferences to make sure the settings were correct. The headphones were not being recognized. This was not working with several differing sets of headphones. I made a phone appt. with Applecare. The laptop PRAM was reset and it works. There is still a bit of a delay when I plug in the headphones before they are recognized and I do feel the port is just a bit "off" as the no headphones plug all the way in. They seem to just sit almost flush but, not quite. However, resetting it resolved the issue to a satifactory level. Applecare said the issue was that not enough power was getting to that function on my laptop. They gave me the case number and I can use it if I have any further problem when I take the laptop in with me to any Apple service center. I was quite satisfied with how this was handled by Apple and if I have anymore issues will follow up.
I love  this laptop but, even though this is working now I do feel that port is somewhat recessed a bit much.
I also want to add that this is my first Mac and despite having had this issue I was extremely impressed with the Applecare call that I got to help resolve this. One of the reasons I went with a Mac was the reputation for service Apple has. I was fed up with Sony to the hilt. I was glad I went with this Mac despite the headphone issue because had I still been with Sony, I'd have been give a major run around to deal with this issue. So far, Apple has tried everything possible to help me with this and assured me should I have any further issue they will immediately resolve it or give me a new machine. WAY better than dealing with Sony! I do not regret going with this MAC headphone issue or not!

  • Is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M in the new MacBook Pro supported by Adobe for Premiere & After Effects

    As the title states.
Is it worth getting the 15" MacBook Pro with the Nvidia graphics card over the 15" version without for use with both Premiere Pro & After Effects CC?

    Thanks
Unfortunately, I've found that many of the users here are PC users. While they are helpful, it's rare to get anything beyond guesses for Adobe Premiere CC performance on Macs.
I've noticed that the list of "supported" GPU's is not updated all that much by Adobe. It took a while after last year's macs were released for that list to be updated with those GPUs. But the 750M has 2GB VRAM and pretty much any GPU with 1GB of VRAM or more can take advantage of the Mercury Playback Engine on Premiere CC (http://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2013/06/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-and-gpu-support.html)  With CS6, if your card isn't on the "list" you could add it using that hack that people talk about but you don't have to worry about that with CC as the above link explains.
While the regular 15" Macbook with the integrated graphics card is probably good enough to edit w/ Premiere CC, I don't think you'll be able to take advantage of any GPU acceleration because of the lack of a dedicated GPU with 1GB of VRAM. I am running Premiere CC on an iMac with an AMD GPU that isn't on the list, but does have 1GB of VRAM so I can take advantage of gpu accleration (however, while it's smoother than "software only", it definitely has it's REALLY annoying issues). I'm sure it'd be better with a newer NVIDIA card (from what I've read anyway) but like you, it's hard to get feedback from many people on these forums who use macs.
Hope this helps. I for one would go with the 750M. It's more $$$, but I'm guessing it'll be worth it. Just a guess though. I wish someone with that laptop (or even a 2013 iMac with similar GPU) would chime in with their thoughts.

  • 2nd hand Mac Pro: what to look for? Want later models

    Hi everyone
I have a 27" iMac tha tis a couple of years old. I have outgrown the 1tb hd, and would prefer to go for a standard desktop design to make adding and changing drives easier. I want to avoid obsolence. I am not looking for a very new model, but one that is a current design. Can anyone give tips on how to determine how recent used Mac Pros i come across are?
Thanks in advance for any tips you can pass on!
    John

    Additional information for completeness:
The 2008 model and previous are Very Different from the 2009 and later. The 2009 and later can accept much more memory and that memory is substantially cheaper. The 2009 and later with the same number and nominal speed of processors approaches twice as fast in benchmarks due to architectural differences
So if you expect to do compute and memory intensive modeling, Photo, Video, or Audio editing, limit your hunt to the 2009 model and later.
If you are doing general work that does not involve large memory sizes, any model Mac Pro will work for you.

  • HI, I'm jodi I have a macbook pro I am looking for help.  CONTACTS

Hello I have bought a macbook pro to help me streamline all my contacts and 2 IOS devices all through one computer very streamlined.  Except I;ve run into a problem. When I open a contact it will have all the persons info address, picture, phone email.  Then it will say  Cards:  On My Mac and Icloud when I open either one they have no info other than a phone number but none of the other info on it.  Please ask any questions I have a hard time expressing my questions sometimes.

I would very much disagree with your comment. I along with all my family have used pages in a professional enviroment for the past four years and have experienced nothing but pleasure from it. It is a serious word processor, but people decide its not as it has a cleaner layout and more creative freedom built in.

The reason I checked plugins was that Firefox often took too long to open.

This so called liquid damage that they are reffering
to probably occured when I was working and had my
computer on the desk...someone must have been
drinking a coke cause when I came back there was a
coke can on its side, but not exactly very close to
the computer, and the liquid had seeped underneath
the machine. When I picked the mac up there was
liquid on the bottom of it, but only because those
little useless rubber standoffs they put on the
bottom of these Macbook Pro's was not high enough to
be above the thickness of a water based liquid as it
runs across a desk. At that point I promptly had
unplugged the battery from my computer and the power
cable and dried it all off. From that day no NEW
problems had surfaced, the battery and heat issue
had already existed.I didn't expect that any should
because the liquid had only reached the bottom side
of the computer and it was shut off quickly.
    Where was your desk?
I think you should find the drinker/spiller of the coke.
Getting electronics wet usually kils them, they aren't made water proof or even resistant.
Logic board+super drive+batery=$1200 probably not far off.
Some one owes you 1200 cokes and IMHO it is not Apple.
