Getting Nikon D3100 NEF Photos Into CS4 Camera Raw
I am a novice photographer (some of my work is here: http://www.chrisinmotion.com/office1.htm). I recently bought a Nikon D3100 DSLR but can't for the life of me get any of the Native NEF images to open in Photoshop CS4 Camera Raw. What steps do I need to follow to accomplish this task and what additional software do I need to download. I have updated CS4 with all the plug-ins. I would be ever so grateful for a step by step outline. Thank you. -- Chris
The Nikon D3100 is NOT supported by any version of Adobe Camera Raw that runs with CS4. There will never be any updates to CS4.
You have three options:
1.— Upgrade to CS5; or
2.— Download the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, currently 6.4, and use it to convert your raw Nikon files to raw DNG files first, then open those raw DNG files in Adobe Camera Raw 5.7 hosted by Photoshop 11.0.2 ("CS4"); or
3.— Use the Nikon software.

Most specifically, which OS version are you using? Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto?
From the sound of it, my first guess would be the versions you're running. Nikon D800 gained support in Lion 10.7.4 (Nikon D800E support was added in RAW Compatibility update 3.13 sometime last year).
If you're running versions earlier than these (e.g Snow Leopard) then the OS doesn't know how to deal with these RAW files. -
Hopefully someone can help me.
This is the first time I will (hopefully) be using RAW files. I have installed the Camera Raw 5.7 plug-in into my copy of CS4 (Photoshop), but can't load the NEF files ... am I missing a step?

Best way to get already adjusted NEF photos into LR3???
Hi,
I am just starting to use Lightroom.
Now, my issue is how to get my old Photos into the Lightroom Database. The new Photos are no issue with as long as I get used to using Lightroom&Photoshop :-)
These "old" Photos have already been going through the adjustement process in Capture NX2. Lightroom and CaptureNX2 are saving the RAW editing in different positions. This leads to that the editing would be lost by importing them straightforward into Lightroom.
So, I do not want to perform the editing on thousands of Photos again. I do however want to get them into the Library Database of Lightroom.
My wish is to be able to see the Photos in some form ( JPEG??? ) as well as being in the database. Optimally the NEF should be connected to the view format.
My first thought was to convert the NEF to jpeg before importing them into Lightroom.
Pros: The NEF and JPEG sticks together (jpeg as a hidden piggyback)
Cons: I only see the NEF version and not the jpeg => "lost" the editing. I hoped to find a way to swap it around ( RAW as a hidden piggyback).
Question: Is there anyway of swapping the piggybacking around?
An other suggestions are also welcome!
I assume that there are some others out there that have experienced that same issue and found a solution to it.
/ErikI have used Nikon Capture NX2 quite a bit but am not using it anymore for the following reasons:
LR cannot read NX2-nefs; and NX2 cannot read LR's edits.
In my workflow I need LR and its image managing capabilities and its capabilities to sync multiple images fast.
After using LR since LR2, I am finding that LR 3 gives me all the editing tools that I need and I don't see any necessity to use NX2.
Sure, the U-point technology was great when nothing like that was available. But now I find that I can achieve the same results with LR's editing tools.
I would not want to have images on my computer that LR cannot read - or only if I create JPGs or TIFFs first, which just clogs up my hard drive with copies.
My advice would be: Learn to use LR's image editing capabilities - and particularly the local adjustments - and have all your images in LR.
If you have lots of images - as I do - to work with two different image editing softwares that cannot read each others edits is - in my view - a recipe for frustration and unnecessary work.
I love Nikon's cameras and lenses but for image editing LR is my choice.
BTW I am neither an Adobe employee nor do I own Adobe shares.

Updating CS4 Camera Raw to show Nikon D700 in camera photo controls & ADR
I am trying to get Nikon D700 images using their picture controls and ADR to show in Camera Raw. I understand later updates do this. Now I just get the flat Raw data when I open the NEF file --- NEF showing on Bridge shows the picture control colors; NEF in Raw does not.
But download fails repeatedly for the CS4 update 5.7 Message is "Camera Raw 5.7 updater.dmg could not be saved because an unknown error occured." The desktop shows two fines, one the .dmg shown as a disk, the other a blank file named OOELvLnz.pdf.part. Trying the download again yet another blank file came onto desktop called OkSFJR48.pdf.part And so on always a different blank file name and same error message on the download.
So first, is 5.7 the correct update? What else do I have to do to see ADR and incamera photo controls in Camera Raw? And what other options to download an update? Thanks for the advice.you are kind to suggest this but why is there no one at Adobe to just answer my questions? This is not something for some amateur to give me advice on -- I want the programmers and inventors of the actual program and updates to tell me so I get the right answer in one place. I have now had four emails from someone at Adobe and none of them even apologize for not answering.

I work with a Mac & I had to restore my computer for my time machine back-up. When I attempt to open/edit a photo with either camera raw or photoshop I get the following error message: Error 150:30 , it also sys that licensing for the product has stopped working?
Unfortunately when Adobe products are restored from backup, especial CS4 and especially Mac, it breaks licensing.
There is a python script included in the license recovery kit that should work if you are familiar with Terminal.
If not, you must reinstall your CS4 suite. You don't need to delete your preferences, so it should be the same as before.

Trouble Opening NEF in CS4 Camera Raw
I have a Nikon D5100 and I'm trying to open some NEF(Raw) images that were taken by it in Photoshop CS4 Camera Raw. I can see the thumbnails in Bridge and I have the updated my Camera Raw Plug-In for v.5.7.0.213, but it will not open them. Instead it gives me a message saying "Could not complete your request because it is not the rightkind of document." When I was shooting with my Nikon D80 I had no problems accessing the images, but now I do. I have a buisness that has been put on hold until I can solve this problem. Please, how can I fix this?

Correct...Camera Raw 6.4.1 WON'T work with Photoshop CS4...that's why you have to download the DNG Converter and convert those raw files to DNG which is a file format that allows backwards compatibility all the way back to ACR 2.4 in Photoshop CS. Did you donload the DNG Converter or Camera Raw? You want the DNG Converter.

They should be supported in pse 12 without any updates to camera raw.

Hi, My kids bought me a sony camera dsc=w330 cyber=shot last year in october! The camera is fine except I can't get the cord to go into the camera to download it to my computer! It was always a little hard to get it to go into it but now it won't go in at all! It's like something is wrong with the camera! I tried a new cord and it still wouldn't work! I don't have the receipt because my girls got it for me and we was going thru a rough time with my husband as he was sick and had pasted away and they have no ideal where they put the reciept! First: Please, please, PLEASE, edit your original post, removing your address. Including your address, phone number or email address in an open forum like this is a very bad idea. Second, just to be clear, the W-330 uses a miniUSB cable, not a microUSB cable. I have no doubt that the cable that came with your camera had the correct connector on it, but please make sure that the new cord you got has the right connector on it. MiniUSB connectors were always a little bit troublesome, so I'm not surprised that you might have had trouble with that, but if you possibly got the wrong cable as a replacement, that could definitely cause a problem. Beyond that, I agree with bitsnpieces that your camera may be damaged. I also suspect that the warranty has expired, even if this problem might be covered by a warranty repair, which I suspect it wouldn't. I fear that your best option is to replace the camera.

Quality of NEF conversion/demosaicization in Camera Raw

Please, I have a question for you experts about image quality of Nikon D7100's NEF files opened in Camera Raw.
I have examined a D7100 NEF file, loaded in Camera Raw 7.4, and if magnified at higer zoom it is possible to see maybe some troubles in demosaicing.
You can clearly see that the inclined lines are demosaicized in blocks of 2x2 pixels. This is true regardless of the sharpness settings.
When you open this file in Nikon CaptureNX2 the problem is not present.

The file is downloaded from site DPReview, is a test shoot for a camera comparative.
I have noticed the same thing, more or less, opening other NEF files (from Nikon D7000, D5200, D3200 except D800).
With this issue, it seems is not taken advantage of the resolving power of the lens or the sensor resolution.
I would like to ask if this is really a problem or if there is some setting/configuration to manage it.

This particular issue is not directly related to PV 2003 vs 2010; however, the detail-oriented sharpening of PV 2010 will accentuate the blocks compared to PV 2003. The underlying issue is the nature of how ACR's current demosaic approach handles diagonally-oriented features. We are aware of it and of course it is a candidate for improvement in the future. -
CS4 Camera Raw. It worked a month ago, and now it does not. I have checked all preference settings, etc. It is not an option in bridge. When I try to open, it says, "could not complete yoru request because of a program error." Chat support had me download a Camera Raw 5_5 , but it didn't solve the problem Any help appreciated!

Opening tiff photos in Adobe Camera Raw
I can not open my tiff files / photos in Adobe Camera Raw. I am using CS6 that has been completely updated with all the current updates. I go to Bridge, highlight a tiff thumbnail photo and go up the file drop down menu. The open in raw selection is grayed out and I can not select it. It works fine with jpeg files, and I can open raw files without problems. It just won't work with tiff files. I have gone to preferences and selected the option to open all supported tiff flles but this did not work either.
I have uninstalled Photoshop and Bridge and reinstalled it and updated it all again and it still will not let me open tiff files in Camera Raw.
Any ideas?I am more apt to beleive the issue is with the tif files themselves. Not all tif files are equal. It depends on the compression, bit mode and so forth. Can the tiff files be opened in photoshop? if so, then that just maybe the problem. if not, then the file itself maybe corrupt. But I am leaning towards the settings used when saving the file.

Normally you should just have to do Help - Updates from Photoshop's menus to get the latest Camera Raw (and all other updates).

Well I guess you can press cmd + shift + 3 to take a picture of your whole screen or cmd + shift + 4 to take a picture of a selected area, that will create a file called "screen shot yyyy-mm-dd at hh:mm:ss.jpg" on your desktop then you just select those files and drag them into iPhoto.

The section in Camera Raw conversion, where it has the Presets section, I have lost my presets.
Had a computer virus and had to reload everything.
Can somebody please tell me where I can put my presets into the Photoshop and Lightroom CC section
so that it will work?
ThanksYour LR preset folder can be found using: Edit / Preferences / Presets / Show LR Presets Folder (and there is a Store Presets with Catalog checkbox that you might want to check or uncheck depending on what it was, before).
Your ACR presets are in a Settings folder next to the Cache folder as shown on this page:
