Getting null returned when working with Linked Lists

Ok, i'm having the same problem with a couple of methods that deal with linked lists, and i was hoping someone could lend me a hand. First off, the specifications for one of the methods:
An iterative procedure smallElements
PARAMETERS: a ListItem reference, ls
an integer n
RETURN VALUE: a new list identical to the given list, except
that it contains no occurrences of numbers greater than n.
for example, given input list ( 3 2 6 3 4 ) and 3,
the return value would be the list ( 3 2 3 )
And here is my code:
ListItem smallElements(ListItem ls, int n){
ListItem small = null;
ListItem result = small;
if(ls == null)
return null;
else{
while(ls!=null){
     if(ls.number <=n){
     result = new ListItem(ls.number, null );
     result = result.next;
     ls = ls.next;
return small;
Like the topic says, i keep getting null returned as a value. I have tried setting small= new ListItem(ls.number, null), and that actually returns the correct list, except that the first number is repeated twice. I would greatly appreciate any assistance.

I am not sure I understand your code. What exactly are those ListItems? It seems to me that you are dealing with single List elements, while the specification says that you are supposed to return a List.
But the main error is that you have two ListItem objects there, which seems to fill the same purpose - only that you use one, and return the other. 'small', which is the one you return, never get set to anything else than null.
I think you should do something like this: make a new, empty list to return
for element in parameterlist
    if number is smaller than n
        add this element to returnlist
return returnlist

  • How to get exact match when working with Oracle Text?

    Hi,
    I'm running Oracle9i Database R2.
    I would like to know how do I get exact match when working with Oracle Text.
    DROP TABLE T_TEST_1;
    CREATE TABLE T_TEST_1 (text VARCHAR2(30));
    INSERT INTO T_TEST_1 VALUES('Management');
    INSERT INTO T_TEST_1 VALUES('Busines Management Practice');

    CREATE INDEX T_TEST_1_IDX ON T_TEST_1(text) INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT;

    The above query will return 3 rows. How do I make Oracle Text to return me only the first row - which is exact match because sometimes my users need to look for exact match term.
    Please advise.

    But I would like to utilize the Oracle Text index. Don't know your db version, but if you slightly redefine your index you can achieve this (at least on my 11g instance) :

  • UI not getting change update when working with LIST and INotifyPropertyChanged

    i was trying to know two way data binding. i have simple car class which extend INotifyPropertyChanged for notify the change to update UI. bind List object to few textboxes and notice when one textbox value change then other textbox value not updated. all
    textboxes bind to same property. so one's value change should propagate to other textboxes.
    this is my code
    public class Car : INotifyPropertyChanged
    private string _make;
    private string _model;
    private int _year;
    public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged;
    public Car(string make, string model, int year)
    _make = make;
    _model = model;
    _year = year;
    public string Make
    get { return _make; }
    set
    _make = value;
    this.NotifyPropertyChanged("Make");
    public string Model
    get { return _model; }
    set
    _model = value;
    this.NotifyPropertyChanged("Model");
    public int Year
    get { return _year; }
    set
    _year = value;
    this.NotifyPropertyChanged("Year");
    private void NotifyPropertyChanged(string name)
    if (PropertyChanged != null)
    PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(name));
    This way i bind
    Car carTest;
    private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
    carTest = new Car("Ford", "Mustang", 1967);
    List<Car> ol = new List<Car>();
    ol.Add(carTest);
    this.textBox1.DataBindings.Add("Text", ol, "Make", true, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged);
    this.textBox2.DataBindings.Add("Text", ol, "Make", true, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged);
    this.textBox3.DataBindings.Add("Text", ol, "Make");
    when run the code then Ford was showing as make name but when change value in any textbox then that change is not shown in other textboxes.
    the moment i change this line List<Car> ol = new List<Car>(); to
    BindingList<Car> ol = new BindingList<Car>(); then code started to work fine.
    My Question
    1) what is the difference between List and BindingList class ?
    2) can't we use List<> for my situation instead of BindingList
    3)
    this.textBox2.DataBindings.Add("Text", ol, "Make", true, DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged);
    this.textBox3.DataBindings.Add("Text", ol, "Make");
    see the above code and tell me what is the advantage of using DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged because i have seen if we do not use this code
    DataSourceUpdateMode.OnPropertyChanged then also data change is propagated to other textbox when cursor focus change.

    I would have thought that'd work with List<t>, in fact I think there must be something wrong in your code there.  I can't spot it though.
    I recommend use of ObservableCollection rather than BindingList.
    The default on bindings is that changes are propagated from the target ( view ) to source ( vm ) when the control loses focus.
    If you want to do the equivalent to a keydown event handler in a viewmodel then onpropertychanged is the way to go.
    You want to avoid creating bindings in code unless you really really have to, it's way easier to put them in xaml.
    Even if your ui is dynamic, you can build xaml and use that to create the ui objects:
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/28797.aspx
    The difference between BindingList and List is, literally, iBindingList.
    See
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.componentmodel.ibindinglist%28v=vs.110%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
    What probably isn't very obvious is that BindingList fires an event - iirc  itemchanged when properties on objects in it change.
    Maybe you did something wrong in your implementation of inotifypropertychanged.  I must admit, I can't see anything there though.
    You don't really need those magic strings since .net4.5 and you also don't need to explicitly implement inotifypropertychanged you could use:
    public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged;
    public void RaisePropertyChanged([CallerMemberName] String propertyName = "")
    if (PropertyChanged != null)
    PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName));
    As used in this:
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/WPF-Dynamic-Fonts-ad3741ca
    If you try that sample you can have:
    public class FontDetails : INotifyPropertyChanged
    or
    public class FontDetails
    And you can see it still notifies change successfully to both windows.
    Most wpf devs will use observablecollection rather than List or bindinglist.
    Observablecollection notifies addition or removal of entries.  It can be used to notify an entry has changed, but does not detect change of property.  You would have to raise the event in code if you want to tell it an item changed.
    Hope that helps.

  • Getting an error when working with Responsive Design Output: MasterThemeSchema.xml

    When generating a Responsive Design HTML 5 output, I'm getting this error:  "MasterThemeSchema.xml file has invalid data." I am unable to  access the manage layout features now to continue my customizations.  I had imported a customized font before seeing this message. I'm moved the project to my harddrive, where the software is installed, and and still getting it (I know RH doesn't always do well on a network drive).  Any ideas?

    I searched this blog for similar posts and found posts that described similar issues.  I ended up moving my RH project file to my local drive, deleting the masterthemeschema.xml, and replacing it with another masterthemeschema.xml from another project via Windows Explorer.  I will recreate my customizations and hope for the best.  Any ideas on what causes this corruption of the mastertheme schema files in the first place?  Does this masterthemeschema.xml error only occur when working on a network drive and not local?

  • Performance issues when working with huge lists

    I’ve got a script that reads a large CSV spreadsheet
    and parses the data into a list of the form [[A1,B1,C1],
    [A2,B2,C2], [A3,B3,C3]] and a second list of the form
    [#A1:B1,#A2:B2,#A3:B3] etc… The actual spreadsheet is about
    10 columns x 10,000 rows. Reading the file string goes fast enough,
    the parsing starts off fast but slows to a crawl after about 500
    rows (I put the row count on the stage to check progress). Does
    anyone know if the getaProp, addProp, and append methods are
    sensitive to the size of the list?
    A sample of one of the parsing loops is below. I’m
    aware all interactivity will stop as this is executed. This script
    is strictly for internal use, it crunches the numbers in two
    spreadsheets and merges the results to a new CSV file. The program
    is intended to run overnight and the new file harvested in the
    morning.

    > Does anyone know if the getaProp, addProp, and
    > append methods are sensitive to the size of the list?
    Is this a trick question? Sure they are. All of them.
    Addprop and append are quite fast (due to the list object
    scalable
    preallocating memory as required), so i doubt that they are
    the cause of
    the problem.
    GetAProp will search each item in the list, therefore, if you
    are
    searching for the last item, or if the item is not in the
    list, the more
    the items, the slower the command.
    Didn't go through all your code but I noticed
    - this: repeat with rowCount = 2 to file2string.line.count
    Big no-no! Line counting is a very slow operation for it to
    be a
    evaluated in a loop.
    - and this: myFile2data.append(myLineData)
    String operations like this require memory reallocation, and
    therefore
    are very slow. If you do conclude that such an operation
    causes the
    problem, consider using a preallocated buffer (create a big
    string in
    advance) and then use
    mydata.char.[currentoffset..(currentoffset+newstr.length)]=newstr
    This can make code run even hundreds times faster, compared
    to the
    append method.

    Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.

  • I just upgraded to os 10.9.5. When I try to open iPhoto, I am told that the version I have(9.3), is not compatible with the os. But it came with it when I upgraded. What do I have to do to get an iPhoto that works with 10.9.5? TIA

    This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgradeto iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
    Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
    Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1

  • Problem with Ai when working with a logo (the program gets slow & I can´t move the logo easily)

    Hi there, Hope everyone is well. I have troubles with my Ai when working with a logo, I just want to move it from one point to another and it gets pretty slow to be moved. I am working on a brand new iMac and this problem surprises me a little bit. Do you know why is this happening? I get de Ai from the Creative Cloud...could it be the internet?

    Can you please show a screenshot?
    Are there any placed raster images in your file? Are there any raster effects in your logo file? What are your Effect > Document Raster Effects Settings... ? Also, what are your Preferences > Scratch Disks settings, and how much free space do you have on that (those) drive(s)?
    I doubt it's the internet, unless you're also synching at the same time ... and while this is taking place your internet connection is super-slow.

  • Help with linked lists and searching

    Hi guys I'm very new to java. I'm having a problem with linked lists. the program's driver needs to create game objects, store them, be able to search the linked list etc. etc. I've read the API but I am really having trouble understanding it.
    First problem is that when I make a new game object through the menu when running the program, and then print the entire schedule all the objects print out the same as the latest game object created
    Second problem is searching it. I just really have no idea.
    Here is the driver:
    import java.util.*;
    public class teamSchedule
         public static void main (String[]args)
              //variables
              boolean start;
              game game1;
              int selector;
              Scanner scanner1;
              String date = new String();
              String venue = new String();
              String time = new String();
              String dateSearch = new String();
              double price;
              String opponent = new String();
              int addindex;
              List teamSchedLL = new LinkedList();
              String dateIndex = new String();
              String removeYN = new String();
              String venueIndex = new String();
              String opponentIndex = new String();
              start = true; //start makes the menu run in a while loop.
              while (start == true)

    I don't understand your first problem.
    Your second problem:
    for (Iterator it=teamSchedLL.iterator(); it.hasNext(); ) {
    game game = (game)it.next();
    // do the comparation here, if this is the game want to be searched, then break;
    }

  • I followed all the directions to get Norton 360 to work with Firefox 8, but nothing works. I love Firefox, but if my Norton 360 won't work with it I'll be stuck with IE, which I do not like. Please Help Me!

    I followed all the directions to get Firefox 8 to work with my Norton 360, but nothing has worked. Is there anything else I can do? I didn't know there was an issue when I first upgraded to Firefox 8 so didn't choose the Norton plug ins immediately so I uninstalled Firefox hoping to be able to do it correctly when I Downloaded it again. Unfortunately it didn't ask me any thing regarding Norton so I went to Plug ins as directed to Enable Norton 360's plug ins, but none were listed.
    What can I do now? I LOVE Firefox! If we can't make it work I'll be stuck with Internet Explorer which I do not care for at all!
    I need to have Norton Security to protect my computer. Please help me find a solution to this problem ASAP.
    Thank you,

    Hi Susie, I use Norton 360 and have the latest Firefox 8 installed is working fine for me. Firefox 8 support for [http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-360/Firefox-8-Support-for-Norton-Toolbar/td-p/581640 Norton Toolbar] was released on Nov 8th. Install the appropriate add-ons based on the version of Norton 360 you're using (see official Norton link above). Hope this helps.

  • How do I Get My Router to Work With iChat ? FAQ 2

    Routers: Any configurable device that sits between your computer and the internet link you have.
    Routers seem to fall into two categories
    Those that work straight from the box. See Apple Doc 93333
    NOTE
    This Doc has not been updated since Jan 04
    and those that do not.
    This post will deal with what you may need to look at.
    First off make sure your device is acting as a DHCP server. (if you are already on the internet you may not have to bother with this.)
    Check in the Network Preference Pane, in the "Built in Ethernet" option from the "Show" drop down list.
    Make sure the TCP/IP tab is the 'front' one. You should be able to see Configure IPv4 and it most likely reads Using DCHP. Make a note of your IP address. It will start 10.xxx.xxx.xxx or 192.168.xxx.xxx (the 'x' s will stand for any number between 1 and 255).
    Your router is most likely to be configurable from your browser. You will need to find the IP address to type into the browser from any Readme or PDF files that came on the install disk or visit the makers website and download a manual.
    DMZ Demilitarised Zone
    This is a less secure setting that basically opens all ports and points the incoming data to your computer. (not helpful if you have more than one computer on your LAN)
    NAT Sometimes called NAPT and related to Port Forwarding (also Virtual Server or Pin Holes)
    These settings are usually found in an Advanced setting.
    You will need to set an incoming IP address (Usually 0.0.0.0 for any outside server), a port that data will arrive on, the Inside computers IP address (your computer) and the port it will deal with the data on and the protocol it will use.
    iChat uses TCP and UDP so some devices will need the settings done twice, once for each protocol.
    See Apple Doc 93208 for more information.
    Note:
    Note 1 should read:
    1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.
    UPnP Universal Plug n Play.
    This is a simple Plug and Play type of setting. iChat can find it's own way through a router if the device has this capability.
    Trigger Ports
    Some devices offer a security measure that works by a first or trigger port receiving a data packet and then opening further ports when accepted.
    The first port for incoming Video or Audio invites is port 5678. When you click on the invite window the process moves to port 5060 (so these will need to be opened by the trigger port) for negotiating the final group of ports from the group of 20 (16384-16403 These will need to open when the trigger says so as well). Therefore port 5678 triggers ports 5678, 5060, 16384-16403. All on UDP. Port 5190 neeeds to trigger port 5190 for both TCP and UDP
    Wireless
    Here you will have to read around but this Apple Doc 58514 might be a good starting place.
    Multiple devices
    Make sure only one is acting as a DHCP server. Make sure wireless devices are bridged properly.

  • Disable updating of the menu widget when working with Muse file?

    First of all thank you Adobe for creating Muse - I really like it a lot!
    My question:
    when I work on my website with 250+ pages, it strains the performance to make even the slightest changes to the page structure. I work with two Masters each with much the same horisontal menu widget.
    Adding, deleting and rearranging pages makes the PC (Windows 7 laptop of some but not awesome power) make a halt and take a deep breathe for some seconds. It really interupts the flow of working.
    A crude work around for this is to removing the menu widget in the two masters and put it into a new master page, containing only the copied menu from the two other masters and keeping the rest of the header in place on the original masters to use for aligning on the pages. This way, only one page has to update when working with adding, deleting and rearranging pages.
    I have tried to look for a preference to disable updating the Menu widget when working on the page structures and just enable it the update again when the work is done? does it exist? else I would recommend it strongly :-) Since my work around is a bit tricky/risky to use after publishing ;-)
    Again, thanks a lot for this nice program. Being a selftought CS (now CCC) user I like the ease of control of the webdesign you can get with Muse (at the dispence of other features of course - if you ever wanted to add some sort of database-lookup feature it would be MUCH appreciated. One workaround is to use iframe and an external search/lookup page, that returns results with links back to parent pages. A bit funny construction though :-) ).

    Glad to know you are enjoying Muse.
    It can be very processor intensive if you have multiple Master pages with their own All Pages menu widget. Take a look at the following threads and refer to Zak's response.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1423767
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/6166722
    See if you are able to use just one All Pages menu widget at your site while taking advantage of the hierarchical Master page feature.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/muse-feature-tour/adobe-muse-hierarchical-master-pages/
    We are aware of the performance issues caused by the Menu widget (All pages type) and is something being looked upon by the engineering in one of the upcoming releases.
    Thanks,
    Vinayak

  • How can I get my ipod to work with itunes?

    When I connect my ipod classic into my new computer it seems that itunes does not recognize it. How can I get my ipod to work with itunes? I'm afraid to disconnect my ipod because the display is saying Do Not Disconnect.

    1. Update iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes still can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod.
    2. Click on your windows start menu. Type in "services". Click on it and when it pops up, on the bottom of it click on "standard". Now Scroll down to find "Apple Mobile Device" Right click it when you see it and click on "Start". When it has started, close iTunes and replug in your iPod and it should show up.
    3. Check the USB cable
    4 Verify that Apple Mobile Device Support is installed
    5. Restart the Apple Mobile Device Service and verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed.
    6. If you just want to add some photos, songs and movies from computer to your devices, you can use an iTunes alternative to do the job
    7. Check for third-party software conflicts.
