Getting  occassional bad ".kext" file alerts after forced shutdown.

Greetings!
Shortly after I had to Force Quit my 10.4.11 900mHz G3 iBook to break out of a spinning pinwheel, I started occasionally getting odd alerts whenever I log-in or attaching USB or flash drives, all relating to some ".kext" files and going along the lines of "AppleUSBCDCECMData.kext was improperly installed. Please reinstall." I's sure like to comply if I only knew what and where to get it.
My system purrs along great and Disk Utility and Onyx don't seem to notice anything's the matter. So far it's more of an infrequent nuisance thing, but are these ".kext" files just corrupted or lost and what can I do about it? I'd much appreciate any hints!

Hi I'd like to add my voice to this one.
I had to backup a failing hard drive, used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy to a fresh drive. After a loooonng time spent repairing permissions it's back to health (bar firewire) but on start up / login I get these alerts.
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/iTunesPhoneDriver.kext“ was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
The system extension “/System/Library/Extensions/MaxtorPowSecDriver.kext“ was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.
Bearing in mind I have never used the iTunes Phone driver and the Maxtor drives haven't worked properly since the Seagate takeover so i'm wondering if these alerts are things to live with or can I delete them?
Thanks in advance
Dave

  • Tiger: Won't Restart After Force Shutdown

    After a force shutdown (due to a system hang or whatever), my PB 15" Aluminum won't reboot. I just get the gray screen with the revolving curly-que--forever. I have to start up on another volume (I have partioned my HD). Then I usually run Disk Utility (shows no repair necessary). After that I can restart the original volume. This occurred under previous versions of Tiger; it is not peculiar to 10.4.5. Anyone else experience this? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Try things in Mac101 (no offense) and Apple doc.#106464 for your
    startup issue.
    Also, try using Disk Utility to repair your
    startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache
    Corruption. His link will help walk you thru
    it.
    Cheers!
    DALE
    Thanks, I was unaware of these materials, but they seem to address issues that would preclude startups on a regular basis, such as persistent incompatiabilities. In my case, once I have rebooted the machine with another volume (the Tiger install disc also works), I have no problem in rebooting in the original volume thereafter again and again (at least until the next system freeze and force shoutdown). I only have the problem after a force shutdown, never at any other time. Still, I will try the things recommended in the references you gave and see if I can identify the problem.

  • JFS partition after force shutdown needs fsck all the time

    Basically, I have a problem that everytime I do a force shutdown, my JFS /files partition doesnt mount as it wants to be fsck'ed with jfs_fsck before.
    Once I do that it's all happy again, says nothing was wrong.
    jfs_fsck version 1.1.14, 06-Apr-2009
    processing started: 2/27/2010 14.43.52
    Using default parameter: -p
    The current device is: /dev/mapper/holm-files
    Block size in bytes: 4096
    Filesystem size in blocks: 159362048
    **Phase 0 - Replay Journal Log
    Filesystem is clean.
    Is there a way of making the system do an fsck on it's own if the partition doesn't mount and then reattempt the mount?
    Thanks

    I don't believe there is anything actively wrong with the partition though.
    It's just when I do a force shutdown it complains - quite naturally. But i'd like Arch to do an FSCK as part of bootup if it fails to mount this drive.

  • Severe slowdown problems after force shutdown

    Hey there.
    So, I'm running a game this morning, and I get disconnected, but it doesn't return me to the login screen. I try quitting the application, no results. I try force quitting, nothing. So I force shutdown by holding the power button down. When I restart the laptop (Macbook pro, 2.8ghz dualcore, 8gb ram), it's rather slow. I try bringing up a video on Youtube, and I get a black box for about a minute, then it skips to 7 seconds in and freezes. Anything I try to do with the video box, edit the flash settings for example, causes the little colourful ball cursor thingy, with no response. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash, didn't help. Did a disk permissions repair, took almost three hours, didn't help. Tries playing Angry Birds, and it froze immediately. The game itself progressed through to the start screen, but I couldn't move the cursor on the screen or click anything. Had to force quit out of that. Tried the game I was playing when it crashed, and I could (probably) play it, but the graphics were extremely slow and choppy. I really don't know what to do right now. Any ideas?

  • Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown

    Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
    This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
    It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
    The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
    Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
    On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
    Here's what I've tried so far:
    Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
    Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
    Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
    Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
    Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
    Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
    Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
    I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
    Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
    Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
    Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?

    Hi,
    Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
    I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
    Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
    It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
    Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.)  Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
    I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
    Hope this helps,
    All the best,
    Brian

  • Help!  PowerBook G4 crashed on sleep, won't start after forced shutdown.

    Urgent call for help: After I downloaded a RealPlayer update today, I neglected to run Disk Utility permissions repair. A little later I left my G4 PowerBook running for a few hours and when I came back and tried to wake it up, it wouldn't come out of sleep mode (white light was pulsing).
    I held down the Power button for about 20 seconds but nothing happened, so I removed the battery, which also didn't force a shutdown (white light still on). Finally, after the battery had been out for 5 minutes, I replaced it, plugged the computer in again, and held the Power button down, and it finally shut down (white light went off after about 15 seconds).
    I then tried to restart the computer by pressing the Power button, but now nothing at all happens--no chime; it doesn't even go to a gray or blue screen. I've searched Discussions and found a post from "Maxit" suggesting a reboot from the Install disk to someone whose screen went as far as blue and what to do after that to prevent the problem in the future, but since the computer won't draw power, I can't insert the Install disk. (I've copied Maxit's fix below.)
    Is there anything I can do to get the computer at least to the point where I can reboot from the Install disk--besides wait until AppleCare and/or my local repairman wakes up on Monday morning? Thanks for any suggestions!

    First thing I would do is to restart from the 10.3 installation Disk and rather than proceeding with the installation, go to the menu bar, find Disk Utility, open it and run "Repair." If errors show up, run again.
    Then, I would boot into Safe Mode (which forces a directory repair). See this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
    This will take longer than a normal restart. Once booted, go into Disk Utility on the drive and repair permissions, then restart. Were this not to resolve your issue, then I would suggest doing an "Archive and Reinstall" of 10.3:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
    Then update the software to 10.3.9 (be sure to repair permissions after the update).

    Yes, the sleep light stayed on until I was finally able to force a shutdown by removing the battery for a time, putting it back, and holding down the power button.
    You've asked a good question: I don't know why it didn't go black as soon as I took the battery out, or why I had to hold down the power button for almost 30 seconds before it finally did.
    Maybe when the battery is drained to 1%--which is what the indicator said when I finally realized what had happened and plugged it back in--its reserves are so low that it doesn't have the wherewithal to turn itself off. Or maybe after 5 hours of hibernation it was cranky when I tried to wake it up. . Do you know why it wouldn't respond as expected as soon as the battery was removed or the power button held down?

  • Windows 7 won't start after forced shutdown

    HP Pavilion DV9628
    Windows 7 64-bit
    I was installing a windows update when the system got hung up. I pressed the power button to force shut down. Now when I press the power button, I can hear the hard drive spin, the boot process starts and then the power turns off. The amount of time to shut-off varies. If I leave the computer off external power for about a week I can get all the way to seeing the desktop, but then the power shuts off. I have tried re-installing Windows 7 after a week draining the battery, but it shuts off mid-install. Please help!

    Hi,
    Can you post back with the following details.
      The full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information.
      The full version of the operating system you are using ( ie Windows 7 64bit ).
      Do you receive any error messages at start-up?  If you do, include details.

    Other than the above question, There's nothing I know to add.
    Ignore the OS & memory below in The troubleshooting info & the educated guesses: It is Windows XP Pro & memory is 1.5 GB. Version is the same 10.0.2 Extensions may be the same, for the most part.

    I think problem is dead. Close it & unsubscribe?

  • Keep  getting Keychain password changed alert after removing password

    I Keep getting a "Keychain password changed" alert after removing a user account password my mother applied to the account and then forgot. How do I keep this message from continuing to appear?
    I am not really sure how the keychain system works as I have never used it on my own Mac.

    keychain is where you store the passwords you use on various websites, in mail and other apps. I suspect you use it too. but it's normally quite unobtrusive.
    by default the password to unlock the keychain is the same as the account password. but this does not have to be and you can change it. when you reset the account password the keychain password was not reset. unless you can recall the old account password the old keychain is of no use to you. go to the folder homedirectory/library/keychains and delete the file login.keychain (or move it somewhere else). then log out/in. a new empty keychain will be created with the password the same as the new account password and you can start saving passwords in that.

  • How to get the file content after uploading file

    Hello everyone!
    I have a question. Anyone can provide an example code by jsp that getting the uploaded file content after user uploading a file?
    Your help is highly appreciated!!!

    My experience is you need to do it twice: first read it to a StringBuffer and readline. Then write the file to server. See the code below
    MultipartParser parser = new MultipartParser(request, 10000000);
    Part part = null;
    FilePart filePart = null;
    File uploadDir = new File("/Uploads/");
    if (!uploadDir.exists()) {
    uploadDir.mkdir();
    while(true){
         part = parser.readNextPart();
         if(part == null)
              break;
         if(part instanceof FilePart){
              filePart = (FilePart)part;
              filename = filePart.getFilePath();
              //You can do one of the following option. Here is read line to a buffer and display to screen
    //if (filename != null) {
              //Do not store the file to server machine.
    //long size = filePart.writeTo(uploadDir);
    // System.out.println("The number of bytes written is "+size);
              reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(filePart.getInputStream()));

    Hey colorado65,
    Follow the steps in this link to resolve the issue:
    iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    When you uninstall, the items you uninstall and the order in which you do so are particularly important:
    Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order and then restart your computer:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
    Important: Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
    Let us know if following that article and uninstalling those components in that order helped the situation.
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
    All the best,

    I accidentally deleted an Application on my iphone 5 and with it lost important files. How do i get back these files. The last iphone backup sync was after this so I cant even access an older back up as I cannot find them. How do I get back my Lost files.

    On your iMac launch iTunes and at the top next to the Apple symbol click iTunes > Preferences > Devices and tell me what you see. You last sync should be there showing only a device name. If you have an older backup it will be there as well the difference is it will be the device name with a date and time stamp. Sync and backups are two different things and there is a chance iTunes made a backup the first time you hooked up your iPhone 5.

    Why am I getting an error when I place two OAM files one after the other in different pages? They do not load or play correctly.  They are both configured to play automatically with a .125 second delay and both have a white rectangle "poster" over for a hidden effect.

    Thanks for the idea, Scott! I initially tried your idea, but my OAM files were still not loading correctly.  I tried other combinations of OAM files, and it seems to work fine.
    Back to my original OAM files: I made sure that my elements in my Edge Animate project had different names. I originally copied parts of some elements from one to another, and I think it was confusing to DPS to read it.
