Getting old mac ready to sell-no DVD

I have an iMac 10.6.8 that I am planning on selling. I would like to make it clean of my personal data. Where would I double-chck/
Also, I am unable to delete the folders I put in the sidebar of the Finder. Can't drag them off. How do I get those off?

An iMac 10.6.8 is not a model number of a iMac. It's an iMac that's running 10.6.8.
Click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," to identify your iMac. Once done, you should be able to order replacement DVDs, from Apple, for it.
When you sell your Mac, you should erase the hard drive and sell it with the original supplied DVDs.
Also, I am unable to delete the folders I put in the sidebar of the Finder. Can't drag them off. How do I get those off?
Control click them and select, "Remove from Sidebar," from the menu.

Is there any way to get my mac to read an unfinalized dvd made from a dvd recorder a few years ago?

Not that I'm aware of.  I'm curious: is it a DVD-RW type of DVD, by any chance?

  • Getting my 3G ready to sell

I'm sorry if this is the wrong category for this..wasn't quite sure where to put it. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 4 from my 3G. I would like to sell my 3G but I wasn't quite sure what exactly I needed to do to get it ready to sell. I am with AT&T so its locked to them. I know on the phone there is a reset option to reset all settings on the phone. But do I leave my SIM in or take it out? Thanks for any info!

I have one more concern..I just reset the phone..I did erase all content and settings. I'll be removing the SIM before I sell it. When the phone is on all its showing is the connect to itunes picture. I'm assuming this is normal and whoever buys it will have to put their sim in or get a new one, then connect the phone to their computer to restore it to factory settings then transfer their stuff? I just want to make sure I won't be selling a brick to anybody.

  • Can't get old mac game to play

I have an old game, Pirates! Gold! for Macintosh. I am running OSX 10.3, and I installed Mac OS9 with the additional disc that came with my mini mac and yet I still cannot get this game to open and run. Other classic apps. such as Sherlock are working fine so it seems to be something about this game. Anyone have any suggestions?
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Actually Charles, you were right on about the display
settings. We changed to 256 colors, and screen size
of 640 X 480 and all of a sudden it works! Seems to
be running well so far. I'm still using Jaguar and I
think I may stick with it for a while. You're not
the only person I've heard from who is having
problems with Tiger and old games compatibility.
A lot of older software, games especially, was written by people who didn't pay attention to Apple's guidlines, and who hard-coded in certain items. In your case, they expected a max screen size of 640x480, and max colours of 256. Apple explicitly said to not expect anything of the sort, but some people knew better. It's a classic error, one which even Apple coders made. <cough> MacPaint 1 </cough>...
    Thanks for your reply.
    no problem.

  • Getting old touch ready to give to another

I've seen part of this question answered, but I still have questions.
I've bought a new touch for Christmas and will give my old touch to my daughter who uses a separate computer. I see I should do a restore to wipe out my songs, etc. to get it ready for her use.
Does this wipe out the updates that I've paid for and download onto the touch? I wouldn't want to have to buy the updates again for the same iPod.
When she connects it to iTunes on her computer, will it still recognize that that it was assigned to me and try to attach it to the iTunes songs that I bought for that device?
Thanks, I just want this to go smoothly on Christmas day and not have problems then.

Erase all content and settings: Connect iPod touch to your computer or a power adapter. Choose Settings > General > Reset and tap “Erase All Content and Settings.” That will wipe out all traces of the previous owner. When she connects to her iTunes, it will be like a new device and only sync the selections she makes from her iTunes library.
The OS upgrade will need to be purchased again as it is tied to your iTunes account, not hers. The good news is that the price is now US$ 4.95 and the latest update includes all previous updates. http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/software-update.html

  • Using an old mac mini as an external dvd drive

I was thinking of buying one of the new mac minis.
I have an older one from 2006 (with OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and 512Mb of RAM which means it's not powerful enough for any OS after Leopard) and I was wondering if it would be possible to use that machine as the external superdrive instead of forking out for a new apple superdrive?
I think that there could be some issue with the speed of the USB connection, judging from some questions I've read on the apple website (apple have pumped up the wattage of the connection on their external superdrive) but does that mean that firewire would be ok to connect them up?
    Thanks for any help
    John

    yes.
booting the the Tiger Mini into target disk mode and use its ODD drive on the other Mac.
it may be necessary to pop in the optical media before booting the Mini into TDM.

  • Finding OLD MAC address through Router.

    Sir,
I lost my laptop (Dell Inspiron 5521 15r) and only have its box which contains serial number 6CRC9W1 , order number 920181961 and etc but dont have MAC address. I asked dell about that but they are not helping me to get mac. Please tell me if there is any
way to get old mac addresses through router to which my laptop was connected. Thanks.

You can't. There is no way to know what the MAC was.
The MAC is tied to the network adapter, not the Laptop, and hence not the Service Tag.  Since the Laptop probably had a wired adapter and a wireless adapter,...there would have been two different MACs.
What good would it be even if you knew what it was?

  • I have lost the password and the DVD is not working on my old mac G4 500mhz, how can I get back my password?

I have lost my password and the DVD is not working on my old mac desktop G4 500mhz. I have tried use the boot up disk to change the admin password. But the DVD did not work. ( I did not touch this machine for years.) But i need retreive something , so I have tried the shell script in the terminal
    1. fsck-y and the mount-uw to try to change and find the service directory's plist to change the password. But after I get the mount -uw, it show illegal option message.
What I can do now to solve this problem? in shell script or any other way?
    Thx in advance.

    Hi,
A DVD drive that is not working after many years not used:
most probably dust on the little laser lens.
Take the drive out and if you can reach this lens: clean it with pure alcohol on Q-Tip.
Many people throw away cd or dvd players all the time because they stopped working, and very often it can easily be fixed by cleaning this lens.
I used to have a G5, where I couldn't access that lens. It was very sensitive to dust.
I have fixed it several times with compressed air. One time I didn't have canned air, but a bikepump did the trick.
If you have another mac, I'd try to access the G4 internal disk with firewire target disk mode.
    good luck

  • I have a new mac and my old mac had my photos on it how can I get my photos onto iPhoto without using a external drive or flash drive?

My dad put a new mac in and the old Mac had my photos on it, and I checked iPhoto after it the new computer was plugged in and there was no photos in it, and my dad said that they should be in there but they aren't, so is there a way to get my photos onto the new Mac without the old one and without an external or flash drive? Because a lot of my photos I don't have on my camera because the memory card was full and the pictures that I had already had been on the old mac....
    Thanks!

Have your dad post de what happened - you need to be at least 13 o se these forums and we need to be able to understand what you are asking
the basic answer to moving photos is Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.  but you say you do not have the old computer
Unless  you have a backup or there is more information the answer is there s no way now

  • Rebooting old mac g5: Can't get past the grey screen.

This problem concerns an old mac g5 that I had replaced three years ago because it hadn't been working properly. I am getting it out because my son needs a computer and I was hoping that the thing would work for a little while.
I can't get past the grey apple screen. I have the installation disc in and restart while pressing the c. I just am not getting any further than that. The fans begin to sound like a jet taking off. I have tried resetting the pram while starting up, but that doesn't seem to be working either. I have heard about a hair dryer trick and don't really know what is supposed to get warmed up by that.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks.

No hair dryer.  What you need to do is make sure the PRAM battery is new.   It is a coin shaped battery on the logic board.   Radio Shack sells them.
Option key booting sometimes works.  You have to us a Mac OS X 10.5 or 10.4.6 retail disc, which are black with a white X logo, and do not say Update Dropin or OEM on them.     If you have the original iMac G5 disc that's fine, but web browsing with older operating systems is not very friendly.  Some of these machines were known to have leaky capacitors, and getting the power supply replaced on them now would be quite hard because of the age.
http://www.ifixit.com/ may be able to help if you suspect that.

  • HT3910 Restore old Mac using Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD

When I try to restore my old Mac, which I am preparing to sell, using the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Install DVD (OS X 10.6.8), I hear the optical disc drive spin up and down, then the disc is ejected.  This is the same thing that happens with its original OS X Install DVD, which was OS X 10.4.9.

  • Getting a new Mac: need to transfer files/applications, have external hard drive, and wipe clean old Mac to give to family member

Getting a new Mac this Christmas. I have several questions:
    1. How do I transfer files/applications from old to new?
    2. I have an external hard drive, do I need to save iTunes account to it?
    3. How do I wipe the old Mac clean to give to family member?

    1. Use the Migration Assistant the first time you turn on the new computer.
    2. No, but you should do so as a backup.
    3. Click here and follow the instructions. If the computer originally shipped with Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier, when you reach step 5, insert its original disk, restart with the C or Option key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.
