Getting on a family plan

I currently have my own verizon wireless account. My contract isn't up until September but I would like to get onto someone else's family plan before then. Would I have to pay a termination fee if I do this, as I am not canceling my phone, I am just getting on someone else's plan.

There would not be a termination fee, however your contract would be extended out to 12 months. (Mar 2013)

  • Trying to get iPhone with Family Plan.

I currently am on a family plan, and would like to get the new iPhone, if I add another line and get the iPhone will I be able to change the iPhone to another line on the Family Plan that already has the data and text packages already on it and then just use an old phone on that line that does not require a data package and just pay the $10 a month?

Why was I under the impression that you had to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone?  I too have a family share plan and if I were to add a line to the plan, I could do so for $10/month but I'd have to get a basic phone otherwise to get a smartphone it would be $10/month + Data plan for that line... That's not the case?
I am not following here. You may have been "under the impression that you had to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone" because you do have to buy a data plan when you add a line with a smartphone. Furthermore, you have to keep the data plan as long as the smartphone is active on that line. If you activate a basic phone on that line at some point in the future, you can cancel the data plan as you will no longer have a smartphone on that line.
So yes, if you get a smartphone on a new line, the cost for that line will be $10/month + the cost of the data plan.
If you are only adding the new line just to get a smartphone which you can then switch to another line, you can cancel the data plan on the NEW line after the smartphone is switched to the other line because the new line will no longer have a smartphone active on it. The cost for the new line will then be $10/month.

  • I want to get off my family plan and start a new single-line plan.

(I'm not sure if this is posted in the right place, forgive me if it is)
Here's my issue. I'm currently a secondary line under my dad's line for Verizon. Now, I love verizon, and I want to keep them as my service provider and keep my phone number. But, my dad has not had a job for almost a year and does not pay the cell phone bill on time, to the point where I can't even get on My Verizon and edit our plan or anything. I also no longer get along with my dad and will be moving out soon. I cannot give him half of the phone bill which I would so willingly pay, because any money he receives, no matter what it's purpose, he spends on cigarettes and lotto. So quite frankly, I'm afraid of losing my phone service because of him.
I want my own SINGLE line. I am perfectly able to pay my bill on time (I've already checked out possible plans). I need to break off of my dad's family plan. Please help.

    This thread should help.

  • Changing family plan

I am in a family plan of 5 family members which is under my sisters name. Our contract is already up except for the 5 line. My question is i would like to have my own family plan with only 2 lines and keep the same numbers. However my credit is fair, would that interfere with me getting my own family plan? and/or would i have to pay a fee?

You'll need to do an assumption of liability to take over responsibility for paying for those two numbers.  You don't need to sign a contract, but you do need to visit a store or call in with the account owner present so they can authorize transferring the lines to you.  There are no fees for doing the AoL.
Verizon will do a credit check and if your credit does not meet their standards, you may need to put down a deposit.  This is generally refunded after 1 year of on-time payments.

  • Can i put the iphone in my name and change the family plan?

Hello, i bought an iphone4 from a friend she charged me $130 cause she was getting the evo. I bought it because i wanted to get an iphone anyways. So my question is can i take the phone outta her name and put it into mine and get my on family plan? She told me i could thats the reason i bought it. Thanks for all replies. (:

    Restore...
From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.
There's more to try but let's go a bit at a time.

  • How do I get off a family share plan if I'm not the account owner?

how do I get off a family share plan if i'm not the account owner?

kydd33  Good question!  If you are looking to be removed from the family share plan, then the account owner would need to give you  (or the person looking to take over your line ) permission. This is known as an Assumption of Liability (AOL). I am assuming that you want to keep your Verizon phone number and are looking to remain a Verizon Wireless customer. If so, the age requirement is atleast 18. Also, the current account has to have a current balance. If another VZW customer is taking your line over then their account would need to have a current balance, as well.  To proceed, have the account owner call customer service and authorize that you can remove your line from their account. There is not a penalty or fee for the account owner.

  • Getting iphone, Questions about Family Plan. NEED HELP!

So right  now I am on a family plan with my Dad and mother and we all have old phones that are basic basic. Our family plan has no Data plan at all, and in fact the plan is so old that it does not exist anymore. However I am moving away soon and I want to upgrade to an iphone. My question is this, If I upgrade, will I have to get my own plan? Or will I be able to just upgrade my phone and add the data charges just to my phone without making my parents upgrade their phones as well?
Any help will be awesome. I don't want to go into the store and talk to a sales person because they are motivated by commission so it would be in their best interest to upgrade all or them. So if I can go in there educated about the specifics of upgrading it would help.
    Thanks!!

Thanks to our forum member for the great information!
In addition, please note that you will most likely be able to keep your current calling plan when you upgrade your line to an iPhone 4; however, if the iPhone 4 is not compatible with your current calling plan you will be notified when you process your order online if you login to your My Verizon account and you will be presented with your new calling plan options.
If your calling plan is compatible with the iPhone 4, you will be able to simple upgrade to the iPhone 4 device and add the data plan to your line. This does not affect your parents calling plan in any way. You can also separate your line from the family calling plan and have an individual calling plan for your line and have your parents lines stay with their family share plan.
If you do not feel comfortable ordering your upgrade phone online or at a store, you can also order your upgrade from the comfort of your home if you dial 1-800-922-0204 to contact our customer service department.

  • Not Allowed to upgrade to Family Plan and get Iphone?

I have a single line right now, and I attempted to go through my account and "upgrade to a family plan," but when I get to the page where you select the new phone for your second line.  The Iphone is nowhere to be found!  It allows me to process any other phone with the upgrade to a Family Plan, except the Iphone.  When you click the link on the front page to "buy it" it takes you to a whole new set up that only allows you to add an additional line, but no option to add it to a family plan.  Is verizon not allowing upgrades to family plans and adding a line with the Iphone?  Or will I have to brave the store lines to get this done?

I would go to a store, I think it's just where they have the iphone in a link by itself right now instead of with all the other phones, I would almost be sure you can do this in store without a problem at all. Some people are saying there are actually no lines at stores they've been at so you may get lucky and not have a line at your local verizon store.

  • HT4528 If I want to go get a new iPhone at the apple store. Does the head person of my family plan have to come with me?

Hey I want to get a new iPhone because my is all messed up. I have warranty and I know I have to pay a $100 dollars for a new one. But I want to go by myself because my mom is always busy. But she is the head of my family plan. Does she have to go with me? Also I have a black iPhone, but if I buy a new phone could I chose the white iPhone?

    Call them and ask.
    Call your carrier and ask.
This isn't really a technical issue and as such is not appropriate for these forums.

  • What if my phone is on a family plan and I get the iphone

Would I have to disconnect my extra line from the family plan if I get the iphone? what does the EMAIL & WEB -SMARTPHONE $29.99 included? How much data do I get to use a month before getting over charges? I have a internet wireless card that makes a hot spot does that mean I wouldn't need a internet package for the iphone?

    whoyaboo wrote:
Would I have to disconnect my extra line from the family plan if I get the iphone? No, you can use an iPhone with your current line, but I'm not really sure what you're asking here.  Did you add an extra line to the Family Plan to buy the iPhone at the upgrade price? what does the EMAIL & WEB -SMARTPHONE $29.99 included? This includes unlimited 3G data access and Verizon's e-mail program, you can also use the e-mail program included with the iPhone, or a web-based interface. How much data do I get to use a month before getting over charges? The $29.99 package is truly unlimited, use as much data as you like! I have a internet wireless card that makes a hot spot does that mean I wouldn't need a internet package for the iphone? You CAN connect your iPhone via the hotspot over WiFi, but I don't think you would want to.  The data speed will probably be the same, and the package inlcuded with your iPhone is unlimited (where the hotspot has a limit).  Regardless, you MUST have the $29.99 package on any line the iPhone is active on.

  • Want to get off family plan and go to individual plan

I am on a family plan with an edge agreement and for personal reasons would like to be on my own. My contract is up in June of this year. What are the steps to doing so? If I do it before June, how much will it cost me? Thanks for the help!!

    Jnny2581,
Being able to establish your own account is always nice to be able to do. Since you are on our Edge program, you will have to complete that agreement before you are able to make this change. Assuming, you want to keep your number that is.

  • When I want to update my app a different account comes up now.  Wierd.  It's the family plan owners id...why is this happening and how do I fix it?

Upon  wanting to update some of my apps, I now get prompted to login with the owner of the family plans login.
I have my own account attached to this phone.  Why is this now happening and how do I return it to update my apps with my login ID?

Did you by chance accidentally purchase these app with the different account?
Because all apps are tied to the apple id that was used to purchase it.
You can also check settings - appstore - apple id - if it isn't your id, log out and log in with your id.

  • Switching over to Verizon family plan with iPhone 4S?

I'm switiching from T-mobile to Verizon for the iPhone. Now the rest of my family would like to switch over as well but only one of them wants the iPhone 4S with me. When I went through a mock purchase with the regular iPhone 4. apple.com told me I had to visit a store to set up my family plan and would not let me pre order anything unless I was starting anew verizon contract by myself without a family plan. Is ther a way around this and if not, what's next? Will the iPhone be available at a Verizon store so my family and I can set up all our phones at once? Or do My brother and I need to go to an apple store to get our iPhones and set up the plan, but from there where and when would the rest of my family get their phones? Can anyone shed any light on this or offer any insight? I'm new to the chaos of trying to get an iPhone, especially when switching carriers. Thanks.

I'm new to the chaos of trying to get an iPhone, especially when switching carriers.
IMO, your best bet is to go to a VZW store and work it all out there.  They can switch you over and get you the phones you want right there in the store.

  • Questions on porting family plan lines and a prorated final bill?

Hey there! I've done some searches on the board before posting and encountered tidbits of information I found useful, but I couldn't get all of my lingering questions answered from older posts so here's my situation:
My number is the primary number on a family plan (3 lines, mine included) with Verizon, and I'm considering porting it along with the two other lines elsewhere. All three lines are no longer in a contract and are month-to-month (the 2-year agreements ended many months ago and none of the lines have been upgraded or anything since then). I'm planning to move them all to separate prepaid services through another carrier.
I'm doing my best to gather enough information about how to go about moving all three of these family plan lines with the least amount of hassle , so I've got some questions I hope I can get answered. Thanks for any assistance!
    This is my understanding:
-I'll need to contact my new carrier to have a given number ported, correct? And that line will be subsequently cancelled on Verizon's end, with no ETFs since none of the lines are tied to a contract?
-Should I port the second and third lines first and not port the primary number (mine) first, so asto not cancel all the lines of service before they're ported? I'm okay porting one number at a time AKA separately instead of all at once if that simplifies the transfer process.
-When the porting process takes place and my Verizon service is cancelled, does Verizon prorate the remaining days on my billing period from the date it's cancelled, or do they still bill up to the end of the cycle? I hear it's better to wait until the end of my billing cycle (which for me is the 9th of every month) to initiate the transfer(s) so that I don't have any billing issues, but moving all three numbers on one day (even separately) sounds kinda daunting.
-Do the phones I currently have under Verizon simply "disconnect" or deactivate once service is cancelled? Will they no longer be associated with my family plan lines and therefore be free to be resold or handed off to other family members who are using Verizon? I notice many phones on eBay/Craigslist list a "cleared ESN" as a requirement for someone to activate a used phone on Verizon and wanted to know what that was about.
Thanks for any help on these concerns!

-I'll need to contact my new carrier to have a given number ported, correct? And that line will be subsequently cancelled on Verizon's end, with no ETFs since none of the lines are tied to a contract?  All correct - the port happens via the NEW carrier.
-Should I port the second and third lines first and not port the primary number (mine) first, so asto not cancel all the lines of service before they're ported? I'm okay porting one number at a time AKA separately instead of all at once if that simplifies the transfer process.  You can do it this way - but based on your next question, you wouldn't want to do it this way.  You can't do both!!
-When the porting process takes place and my Verizon service is cancelled, does Verizon prorate the remaining days on my billing period from the date it's cancelled, or do they still bill up to the end of the cycle?  You have already paid for the current month's service - you are billed in advance for the coming month.  What WILL be billed is any texting, roaming calls, data charges, etc, that have occurred during the month that were NOT billed in advance. I hear it's better to wait until the end of my billing cycle (which for me is the 9th of every month) to initiate the transfer(s) so that I don't have any billing issues, but moving all three numbers on one day (even separately) sounds kinda daunting.   But YOU don't have to do anything - your new carrier will deal with it, and it seems to me it would be better to end the service on all three at one time, since it is one account.  You can ask your new carrier what they recommend.  There should be no issues with porting all three lines at once.
-Do the phones I currently have under Verizon simply "disconnect" or deactivate once service is cancelled?Yes - once the number is ported to the new carrier, the phones will no longer work until they are activated with another number.  Will they no longer be associated with my family plan lines and therefore be free to be resold or handed off to other family members who are using Verizon? This is correct, and another reason for doing the port at the end of a billing cycle.  Issues have come up with transfers done mid cycle - and because the account had been billed and paid for the full month's service, the phone's ESN was not released until the end of the billing cycle.  I notice many phones on eBay/Craigslist list a "cleared ESN" as a requirement for someone to activate a used phone on Verizon and wanted to know what that was about.
Thanks for any help on these concerns!
It may take several days for the numbers to fully port over and have all services working correctly, and for the old phones to be fully "released" from your account to be used on another Verizon account.  I would wait a week or so after the port, then call CS and check the ESN status of the old phones to see if they are "clear".
Hope this answers most of your questions.  Post back if you need further clarification.
