Getting online wireless

hello all and i very much hope someone can help me with this. I have newly moved flat and trying to get my imac back up and running on the internet. I am told am in a hotspot for wireless internet as a few business near me offer free internet access and am trying to find away to tap in to this. I went to John lewis today and i was told to go buy a dongle (what ever that is) so my question is, does anyone recommend any bits of kit to go use and also is it possible to get internet this way on my desk top ?
am not looking for any majorly fast internet access just use the desk top for itunes, emails, messenger etc.
all replys are welcome and hope to get this sorted out
Jason

Do you know for sure that your G4 does not have an airport card installed in it?
You can look in the system profiler to find out. I believe that the airport extreme cards are still available at the apple store online for $29. A GREAT deal! I'm not sure if that is what you need, you can check the specs on the apple website for your specific machine. If you have to pay to have it installed, (you could do it yourself), the total cost might be more than a dongle would cost.
Otherwise you can use 3rd party wireless dongles, which are little USB devices, about the size of your thumb, they plug into your USB port or hub. I currently use a Belkin dongle for my iMac G3. I do know for a fact that Trendnet's will NOT work, they have not developed drivers for mac. The Belkin one I have was initially not supported for mac, but there was a driver on their website for it and it works perfectly. You would need to install the software that comes on the CD with it.
Whether you can connect after that, depends on how far you are from the signal and if you have the password, if one is needed.
You can check your setting in the network preferences once you've plugged in the dongle and make sure it is recognized, and that you have it activated in the network port configurations. If you set your location (from the apple menu) to automatic, you should have no problem getting in to any network that is open and not secure. But beware, using an unsecure network opens you up, so make sure that you have a password on your user account, and disconnect from the network by turning off, or removing the USB device when you are not using it.

  • I can't get online wirelessly OR with a wire!

Ok.. first I just wanted to reference this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=818858&tstart=15
Now, moving on, I will explain my problem. Note my specs below. I am using a D-Link DI-624. I have been able to get online for like, ohh... I don't know the past 2 years!!! All of a sudden TODAY it decides that it will not get online. Here's some facts:
    1. I tried resetting the modem, and the router, and my computer (about 5 times).
    2. I have made a new Admin account to make sure it wasn't my settings that were screwed.
    3. I used Applejack to clear any other problems I didn't see.
    4. Any other Windows computer in my house is able to get online, so I know it's not my ISP.
    5. I am able to get a GREAT signal on my wireless internet, so I know it's not my airport card, plus I reseated the card anyway, and it still gives me the same vitals.
    6. I have tried to do a manual DHCP setting, and auto, did a new location, and even tried with a wire, and it will NOT let me get online, by anymeans.
    7. I have tried to go on Apple's site, won't work that way either.
    8. Sometimes my router gives me an ip address, but it still says I am NOT connected to the internet, other times I get that blasted 169.254.x.x ip address, which of course doesn't get my anywhere at all.
    9. I AM able to get on the neighbor's internet, and I get online, of course the connection isn't that strong so I can't stay on it, but I do see that it has to do something with a DHCP assignment? Right?
I don't know where to go from here... I'm wondering if my MAC address is being banned from my router? Can that HAPPEN?? Sigh.. please help, I'll be waiting patiently by my windows computer for a solution... PLEASE HELP!!!!

    Here's what I get:

  • Getting online wirelessly without Airport Extreme

I recently acquired a G5 Power PC which is having a lot of trouble connecting wirelessly. I tried installing an airport extreme card and although the machine knew it was there, it couldn’t locate any networks despite there being 3 very strong ones in range. From talking to a few people I believe my airport slot is faulty in some way.
None the less I still want to get online, due to the computers location I can’t plug her in to a connection. Does anyone know of any USB WiFi devices that are compatible with Power PCs & Leopard that are available in the UK?

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21525?viewlocale=en_US
And then use the external, t-shape, antenna! It should pickup any signal.
You can by a lot of cards, make sure the ralink chipset is on it since this chipset is supported by mac os x by downloading the driver from ralink.com.

  • AE works, modem works, but can't get online

This problem is driving me batty! I recently purchased a new G4 Powerbook (running Tiger 10.4.2) and Airport Express directly from Apple. At the time I didn't have internet access at my house yet but was planning on getting it within a few weeks. I was ecstatic that in the meantime I was able to take my brand spanking new computer and AE to a friend's house and get online wirelessly from there quite easily by connecting the AE to their home router. I later had Adelphia come out to my house and install cable internet. The cable tech didn't know beans about routers but he did get my internet working pretty quickly through a direct ethernet connection from the RCA DCM425 modem to my laptop. After he left I surfed online for a bit and then decided to try hooking up the AE, expecting it to work as simply as it had at my friend's house.
    Ha!
I have been messing with this thing for nearly a week now and have not been able to figure out what in the world is the problem. It works beautifully at my friend's house and not at all at mine. AE has a green light, the modem lights look right and it works when connected directly to my computer, I have a full signal and airport is on and the checkmark is on next to my network and interference robustness is on and Internet Connect says I'm connected via ethernet and all systems are go.......but when I try to open a webpage (any page), Safari sits and thinks for the longest time before telling me I'm not connected to the ethernet. Power cycling everything and exhaustively searching all the settings hasn't helped.
It can't be the AE because it works at my friend's house, it can't be the modem because it works when I'm hooked in directly, so it has to be some setting somewhere in my laptop, right? I know I'm supposed to be on DHCP, not PPPoE, I've tried it with and without distributed IP addresses, I've gone through Network Diagnostics, Airport setup, Admin Utility, network preferences, Safari preferences....I've tried resetting everything to the defaults, I've downloaded the latest Airport updates, I've tried using a different browser, I've tried holding my breath and crossing my fingers and turning blue, but nothing works. Airport Express is supposed to behave as a wireless router...but instead it's behaving like a mute piece of pretty plastic and I'm losing sleep at night because I can't stand being beaten by a machine. Please help - I'm losing my mind!! Thank you o angels of the discussion boards...

DHCP and PPPoE and where they apply (i.e. at the internet or wireless side of the AX and in the Powerbook OS) can be confusing.
The AX configuration may not be what your cable modem needs, although it may have been fine with your friends internet connection (was it a cable modem like yours or a DSL modem router?).
Can you check your laptop Network Preferences settings for the successful ethernet wired connection to your cable modem - ( but make sure it is connected up and working for the internet first). Then check what it shows for the Built-in Ethernet configuration TCP and PPPoE tabs.
This should clarify what is needed for the AX configuration and the Powerbook when using the AX, and maybe put you on the right track.

  • I reset my WRT54G and now I can't get online.

I did a factory reset of my WRT54G v.2 last night after I was unable to access the router's setting to set up a WEP password (couldn't remember login/pass and the default login wasn't working) and now I can not connect to the internet through my router.
-I have no problem getting online when I run directly through my DSL modem.
-I called my ISP to see what they recommended- someone told me perhaps a modem reset would help. I'm on a DSL modem, which they had me configure to PPOE. I set up the router for PPOE under the basic settings tab, adding my user name and password. I changed no other settings. Basically my ISP said everything was normal on their end.
-I've Downloaded the firmware and updated that through the router
-When the router is fully connected there are no light anomalies that I know of (WLAN light and 1 & 2 ports are solid, internet light blinks once every 5 seconds or so).
-I've tried powering down, unplugging, and waiting- all the usual tips.
-My wireless computers acknowledge the router's existence, but like the wired computers, are unable to connect to the internet.
-On my network's properties the number of packets sent and received climbs at a very small rate, but they do increase (I'm told that activity is a good sign).
-One of the oddest things is, when I attempt to run the installation software, when connected to the internet directly through my modem, as suggested by the installation wizard, the first step that attempts to check for an internet connection says it can't find a connection even though I can browse the web perfectly fine.
EDIT: I think this might be caused by my ethernet cable/network running through a secondary port in the back of my PC. The start up disk is looking for a signal from the default/1st port and therefore getting no connection, even though my computer is online. Will have to check this later.
-When connected to my modem, I run cmd then ipconfig, my IP address is
192.168.1.13, is there something I need to do with this in the router set up?
Does anyone have any idea what I could be doing differently? I've reset my router before and never been this stuck. I called customer support but they basically wanted $40 to troubleshoot my router as the warranty has expired and I'd almost rather just buy a new one.

"You have to change your router's IP address to be able to access it. It will not give you the internet."
I'm not sure what that means Richard, but I did change the router's IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.5.1- isn't that what you meant in your first post. I know that isn't reflected in my screen capture that I took last night, but I did do that this morning after I read your post.
"Log on to your router and change two settings.
Change the setting in Setup from PPPoE to Automatic Configuration-DHCP and click on save.
Click on Advance Routing and change the setting from Gateway to Router then click on save."
I did this and still same results as far as I can tell. Can't get online through the router.
"Click on MAC address clone under setup tab ... click enable & click clone ...click save settings ... Check the IPaddress under WAN page ....
If getting IP in public range .... try going online ...."
I tried this- at least to the part about checking the IP address under WAN. I assume you mean the WAN page in the modem setup- nothing looked any different after trying what you suggested, and I'm not really sure where I would be "getting IP in public range" or what that means.
I'm about to give up and just buy a new router to see if I can get the same lack of results with a different one. My ISP maintains that everything is set up correctly on their end and really can't do anything more for me. The Modem works and is set up correctly and they can give tech support for a router.
Here's what my basic setup looks like now:

    hey guys pls help
i couldnt get onlin on my mc safari n firefox not working
    though wifi says m connected????
n do u guys know how to reboot the mac n not loose any data

First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."  Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1920 Mac OS: How to release and renew a DHCP lease
    No internet connection (wireless)
Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

  • Upgrade from 10.3.9 to 10.4.10...can no longer get online

    hey,
thanks for reading. went from panther to tiger last night. i did a complete erase and install of 10.4.6 on my Ti powerbook (867 Mhz processor, 1 GB ram). on reboot, my computer found my wireless network, i entered in the password, and it seemed to connect. i have all bars full on my reception meter thingy.
anyway, when i started safari, the webpage said, "you are not connected to the internet. My internet settings are the same as my desktop settings (which is still running 10.3.9 and can still connect to the internet). i updated the OS to 10.4.10, same problem. reset the router, same problem.
    other info:
    1. installed the new operating system by utilizing disk mode for the laptop and connecting it to my desktop via firewire (laptop DVD isn't working right)
    2. when the computer comes on at first there is a folder with a question mark, then it turns to a smiley face, then the apple logo shows up and everything boots up fine.
so, why can't my computer get online now?
    any help is greatly appreciated.
    thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As far as I can tell, when you upgrade your system, the registration of the Media Access Control address gets dropped with certain cable and DSL modems if you have more than one machine on your network. Resetting the said modem's power by detaching it for 45 seconds and reconnecting it usually fixes the issue
    Edit:
I should end that last sentence with: "as long as all the machines are up and running and requesting internet access from the modem that need access at the time the modem cycles its power back up."

  • After intalling the 10.7.5 update, I have had trouble getting online.

I have a desktop iMac, purchased a year ago. I connect via a modem, it's wired (not wireless). I was having to restart every few days, now it's every day.

What happens; I click on the browser icon and the page starts to load, but doesn't load fully. The first time this happened, I clicked on the other browsers icons (I mainly use Firefox, but also have Safari and Google Chrome).
Then I restarted the computer, and the browser opened fine (I did get that funny white screen, then black screen during the start up process that has been mentioned in other threads). No drops while I'm online.
Then a few days later it would happen again, and I'd restart. I just didn't used to have to restart all the time to get online.
I'm not the most tech savvy person. I have an older modem. It sounds silly, but I've been nervous about turning it off in case it doesn't come back on again, so I've just left it on. When I got the computer home, I just plugged it in and it worked w/o my doing anything else, any reconfiguring, etc.
Unless I was going to be away for some time, I generally just kept the computer in sleep mode when I wasn't using. Now, I've shut it down at the end of the day, and so far it's worked fine throughout the day. I'll try the other suggestions too. Thanks.

  • Can't get online with 10.4.11?????

I have a 2.16 GHz Intel iMac and updated to 10.4.11 and now I'm unable to get online w/ mail, safari, itunes, etc. I'm wireless with a Belkin N1 router. My good ol' iBook 10.3.9 is working fine, so I know my modem and router are working. I've read other threads on the topic but I'm still having trouble. Any wise MacGuru out there who can walk me through this?

Well, I am able to browse the internet again, and actually i still don't know why exactly i wasn't before. The update seems to have fondled a bit with my network settings, the ip-address that I received from my local network had changed to a 192 number while normally this is a 172 number. After updating the network settings (actually nothing has changed, just some back and forth-changing) it got the right ip again and internet worked. I have actually no clue about the reason why it keeps changing ip's. Strange update this 10.4.11. Now I manually have changed my ip-address, hope it keeps working.

  • Trouble getting online

I'm having trouble connecting to the internet on my boyfriend's wireless network. It appears as though my computer is connected, but will not get online. I tried calling his ISP, but they were unable to help me because I am on a Mac. I have a subscription to the AppleCare Plan, and expected to have 24/7 support for $300 (especially considering this is the first time in a year that I have needed support... what is it that I paid extra for??), but unless I am mistaken, I must wait until normal business hours to get help? Any suggestions?

    More on my problem connecting:
I'm trying to connect using AirPort. The signal bar is full, and the network it shows I am connected to is his. I pull up my browser, though, and no internet. His router is encrypted, and I've attempted before to enter in the encryption information using his settings. I don't know if I did that wrong or if it was not the problem, but that did not work. I've never had so much trouble connecting to a network (I've used hotels, school, bookstores)!
When I pull up the Network window from System Preferences, it says that Airport is connected but it does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet. I've tried restarting both the computer and the router, but that has not helped.

  • Switching from a PC to a MAC please help me get online!

  • Virtual Pc 7, Trouble Getting Online

hi, i just bought virtual pc 7, and the internet connection seems to be working, but there's 1 problem, the only prgramme that can use the internet is internet explorer, whenever i try, and for example msn messanger, to log on it keeps giving me errors, and it's not a problem with a msn, cause it is newly installed and when i tried to activate virtual pc 7, it wouldn't do it online, it just stays at the "checking connection" screen and then it gives me an error message so i eventually called a sales agent and activated it through the fone.... point is IE seems to be the only programme that gets online for me... help plz
I am on a wireless connection and my virtual pc 7 came with windows xp proffesional...
    any feedback would be appreciated
    thnx

I'm not sure about the Virtual PC solution, but how about going at it another way: have you tried a different browser than Safari? I think the lastest IE for the Mac is 5.2.3 (After that, Microsoft abandoned the Mac), so IE for the Mac probably won't work.
Try Firefox -- there are other browsers available to download for free -- do a Google search or look around on Download.com. The schools' website might just have an unfriendly design, but you may be able to find a free solution that works for you.
If it uses any sort of PC-only application, though (check with the website's administators), then VPC might be the only way. It seems to me, though, that you would need to buy the one that includes a licensed copy of Windows, though, so that you could run IE 5.5+ under it.

  • Cannot get online

Hi. Got a new MBP today. (I suppose it is "Late 2009" model?)
I could get online and do stuff. Then I started installing some of the basic apps such as Unrarx and Little Snitch. When I installed Little Snitch, the problems started -- I am unable to connect online at all. I uninstalled and then installed it back a few times (including deleting the Library items etc...all of it) and rebooting several times, but it still gives me a problem.
Both on Ethernet and through our Airport wireless connection - same thing.
I checked Little snitch rules, and Safari etc have all been allowed. I can ping my local IP btu cannot ping google.com etc.
Any suggestions on how to get this working again?
    Thanks!

Best advice I could give is:
The problems you are having started when you installed Little Snitch. Not a basic program. If you don't need it get rid of it. If you really, really need it then stop down to the developers web site and check out their forums and FAQ.

  • Can't get my wireless to work.. PLEASE HELP!!!

I thought I was computer savvy and told a friend at work that has an issue with her internet that I could fix it. I am having more trouble than I thought. She told me it was a Windows 7 and it is a Dell Windows XP Professional service pack 3. I am not
    very familiar with them.
She told me that she had uninstalled some programs she felt were slowing her computer down and now her wireless is not working the light is not on, the switch is on but when I go into network adapters all there is, is a 1394 Net Adapter and a Broadcom NetXtreme
and it acts like it needs a cable plugged in to get online when she has never had to use a cable before. I can not find anywhere where there is wireless settings or anything.
Someone please help, this lady is super nice and I would hate to let her down. I have the computer here with me now and if anyone could help I would appreciate is so much

  • Cannot get online with netbook

We upgraded to Infinity but now I cannot get online on my netbook. The icon and wireless connection panel indicate I am connected by when I launch my browser (IE) it says unable to display webpage. My husband managed to get online by using Openzone but this is not very satisfactory when we are paying for Infinity. Our OS is Windows XP.

    Hi Jady and welcome
It's good you've got on line with Openzone, I presume from your own signal... checks that wireless connectivity is working between your Netbook and HH3.
If you go to your HH3 you can pull out a useful plastic card/tab which has your wireless code on it.
Then with your Netbook click on your wireless icon... probably bottom right and click on your wireless name.
This should say something like connect, enter in the wireless key exactly as shown on your tab/hub settings card.
    And it should connect.
I removed the BT Help Desk software off my XP PC as it caused connection problems... kept saying connection failure did I want it fixed... say yes and click on the picture of the HH I was using then it went and connected.
I didn't have this problem on any of my other machines so as this XP PC was the only one with the BT software I removed it as it is uneccessary and the problem never re-occured.
A useful wireless scanner that's free http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ will show your home signals and
can help identify a clear or least used channel you can moved your HH3 from it's Automatic setting to this least congested channel.
Video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf2kZCfYTxI It's the older version 1 but similar. You get a list of your signal and all your neighbours along with a time graph showing their signal strengths... the lower the number the stronger the signal is.
Mine is around 40 to 50,  a picture in my post HERE showing my signal is the strongest and my neigbours which is on a nearby channel is weaker.... If it was the same signal strength I would move my HH3 wireless setting off the Automatic setting and set it to a clearer channel.
Let us know how you get on... I'm using a Win 7 laptop but have the PC running win XP upstairs and could go thru the exact log in process if you still have probs.
