Getting online wirelessly without Airport Extreme

I recently acquired a G5 Power PC which is having a lot of trouble connecting wirelessly. I tried installing an airport extreme card and although the machine knew it was there, it couldn’t locate any networks despite there being 3 very strong ones in range. From talking to a few people I believe my airport slot is faulty in some way.
None the less I still want to get online, due to the computers location I can’t plug her in to a connection. Does anyone know of any USB WiFi devices that are compatible with Power PCs & Leopard that are available in the UK?

And then use the external, t-shape, antenna! It should pickup any signal.
You can by a lot of cards, make sure the ralink chipset is on it since this chipset is supported by mac os x by downloading the driver from ralink.com.

  • Expanding wireless network with Airport Express but without Airport Extreme

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if I can expand my wireless network with my Airport Express without Airport Extreme base station. I have a Netgear wireless router. Is it possible? Can you give me tips on how to set it up?
    Thanks a lot!
    Marc

marcribeiro, Welcome to the discussion area!
No that is not possible. The Netgear is not compatible with Apple's WDS.

  • Extending Airport via wireless to AirPort Extreme

I have a brick home and was told that I could use the airPort Express as an extender for my AirPort Extreme. But everytime I try to set it up I get errors on the AirPort Extreme. How can I get my AirPort Espress set up?

I am trying to do the express as a wireless device off of the extreme
Thanks for clarifying that. You will have far better performance if you can connect the Express back to the Extreme using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
We can try wireless, but you may need to use a wired connection if wireless won't work well enough.
To set it up in the dead zone of my house
Unfortunately, that will not work if you are trying to extend using wireless. The Express must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the AirPort Extreme when you try to extend using wireless.
Start by locating the AirPort Express about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the dead area.
Reason...the AirPort Express can only extend the quality of signal that it receives. If you place it in the dead zone, if it works at all, it will extend nothing.
but now I get nothing on the express.
Temporarily,, move the AirPort Express to the same room or an adjacent room to the AirPort Extreme.
With the AirPort Express powered on for a few minutes, hold in the reset button on the Express for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.
Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express
AirPort Setup will open up automatically.  Follow the prompts.
Once the Express is setup, move it to a location that is about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more signal coverage. The more that you have line of sight between the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express, the better things will be.
Power up the Express and check things out.

  • Can I set a 2nd Gen. iMac to work wirelessly without Airport?

I have a older G4 tower that has Airport on it, but my ancient 2nd Generation iMac does not have Airport on it, and obviously will not connect to the internet. Is it possible to run the older iMac wirelessly without Airport? Is there anything I can add to the iMac externally instead of having to open it up and add hardware?
I'm not that computer savvy, so the most basic straight forward method would be most helpful.
    Thanx!

You could use an Ethernet wireless adapter. Examples of Ethernet wireless adapters are the Linksys WET11, Linksys WET54G, and the Buffalo Technology WLI-TX4-G54HP bridge.

  • Finder freezes when attempting to access a "shared" external hard drive (wireless via Airport Extreme)

Finder freezes.   As soon as I click onto my "shared" external hard drive (3TB WD - wireless via Airport Extreme), finder immediately freezes / eternally spinning beach ball (until I restart finder).  Can still access wirelessly on another Mac (not on Yosemite).
    Please help!

Ok - for a while there, the hard drive would not come up on the desktop - but now on a re-boot of the compter, or if I disconnect the hard drive and re-connect it, a message comes up with three buttons which say:
    Initialize
    Ignore
    Eject
Sound like the hard drive has died?

  • Printing wireless using airport extreme

can printers that support 802.11b/g work wirelessly with airport extreme?

The experience I have had with wireless printing is very easy! Pretty much connect the printer to the AirPort and add it to your computer via "Print and Fax"!

  • Hi Everyone, I am Sreedhar , I need to extend the Wireless Network which is connected through cable in Airport Express, Without Airport Extreme Base Station is there any way to extend my WIFI

    Need Help

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:

  • Help me get my old PowerBook G3 online via my Airport Extreme

I decided to update an old G3 PowerBook; it now has OSX 10.4.11, 1 GB Ram, and an Airport Card (firmware 9.52).  The card doesn't support WPA so I changed my current Airport Extreme network to WEP.  My current system is a 2010 MacPro and Airport Extreme network with all the upgrades. I have tried every combination of Airport Utility, re-starts, etc, but always come back to the same point(s): either "problem accessing this network" or "invalid password."   Yes, caps lock is off.  Is there some fundamental incompatibility between the old laptop and my current network?  I see my network as a choice from the Airport dropdown, just can't get past the logon (password) problem. And yes, have reset the password several times.  Thoughts?

PROBLEM SOLVED (other small one created):  On my current network I have the Mac Pro but also a MacBook.  Even though it seemed I was changing my Airport settings from the MacPro, evidently I set up the Airport initially from my MacBook.  Once I launched the Airport Utility (5.5.2) from the MacBook and changed the security setting to "no password," the G3 let me into my network.  BUT.  The only options I saw for security, using Airport Utility 5.5.2, were "none" and WPA2.  No WEP.  Nothing else.  Anyone who cares to comment on the risks of leaving your network password-free, please let me hear from you. (Actually, the no password network is my "guest network," not my every day network.  But is there a way to add the WEP security option?  Going back to an earlier version of Airport Utility?

  • Multiple Airport Express without Airport Extreme

Is it possible to have multiple Airport Expresses on a network without the router being an Airport Extreme? I have a Buffalo router and can't get more than on Airport Express to be recognized. Is this possible?

The Express must be configured to "join a wireless network" to be able to stream iTunes to your stereo. It sounds like you have one device working OK, is that correct?
If you can't get AirPort Utility to "see" your other Express, temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express and then open AirPort Utility to see if that helps. You will configure it to "join" your wireless network.
When you have it configured, you can disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express to the location that you want.

  • Getting online wireless

hello all and i very much hope someone can help me with this. I have newly moved flat and trying to get my imac back up and running on the internet. I am told am in a hotspot for wireless internet as a few business near me offer free internet access and am trying to find away to tap in to this. I went to John lewis today and i was told to go buy a dongle (what ever that is) so my question is, does anyone recommend any bits of kit to go use and also is it possible to get internet this way on my desk top ?
am not looking for any majorly fast internet access just use the desk top for itunes, emails, messenger etc.
all replys are welcome and hope to get this sorted out

Do you know for sure that your G4 does not have an airport card installed in it?
You can look in the system profiler to find out. I believe that the airport extreme cards are still available at the apple store online for $29. A GREAT deal! I'm not sure if that is what you need, you can check the specs on the apple website for your specific machine. If you have to pay to have it installed, (you could do it yourself), the total cost might be more than a dongle would cost.
Otherwise you can use 3rd party wireless dongles, which are little USB devices, about the size of your thumb, they plug into your USB port or hub. I currently use a Belkin dongle for my iMac G3. I do know for a fact that Trendnet's will NOT work, they have not developed drivers for mac. The Belkin one I have was initially not supported for mac, but there was a driver on their website for it and it works perfectly. You would need to install the software that comes on the CD with it.
Whether you can connect after that, depends on how far you are from the signal and if you have the password, if one is needed.
You can check your setting in the network preferences once you've plugged in the dongle and make sure it is recognized, and that you have it activated in the network port configurations. If you set your location (from the apple menu) to automatic, you should have no problem getting in to any network that is open and not secure. But beware, using an unsecure network opens you up, so make sure that you have a password on your user account, and disconnect from the network by turning off, or removing the USB device when you are not using it.

  • I can't get online wirelessly OR with a wire!

Ok.. first I just wanted to reference this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=818858&tstart=15
Now, moving on, I will explain my problem. Note my specs below. I am using a D-Link DI-624. I have been able to get online for like, ohh... I don't know the past 2 years!!! All of a sudden TODAY it decides that it will not get online. Here's some facts:
    1. I tried resetting the modem, and the router, and my computer (about 5 times).
    2. I have made a new Admin account to make sure it wasn't my settings that were screwed.
    3. I used Applejack to clear any other problems I didn't see.
    4. Any other Windows computer in my house is able to get online, so I know it's not my ISP.
    5. I am able to get a GREAT signal on my wireless internet, so I know it's not my airport card, plus I reseated the card anyway, and it still gives me the same vitals.
    6. I have tried to do a manual DHCP setting, and auto, did a new location, and even tried with a wire, and it will NOT let me get online, by anymeans.
    7. I have tried to go on Apple's site, won't work that way either.
    8. Sometimes my router gives me an ip address, but it still says I am NOT connected to the internet, other times I get that blasted 169.254.x.x ip address, which of course doesn't get my anywhere at all.
    9. I AM able to get on the neighbor's internet, and I get online, of course the connection isn't that strong so I can't stay on it, but I do see that it has to do something with a DHCP assignment? Right?
I don't know where to go from here... I'm wondering if my MAC address is being banned from my router? Can that HAPPEN?? Sigh.. please help, I'll be waiting patiently by my windows computer for a solution... PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Can't print to a Canon MF 4690 wirelessly through Airport Extreme

I cannot seem to figure out why this isn't working. I just replaced a Brother printer (7 years old) that worked great wirelessly through my Airport Extreme with a Canon imageCLASS MF 4690. I found, downloaded and installed the drivers for it (10.6), but when I set up the printer, I can only print using a generic PCL driver. When I choose the Canon UFR driver, I get an error every time, when printing wirelessly or when directly connected via USB. I can see the Canon in the Airport Utility, but it won't print.
    What can I do?

Welcome to the discussions, Joe P.!
    +What can I do?+
You might try Apple's Printer Troubleshooting Guide to see it that provides some help.
Keep in mind that not all printers are compatible with the USB port on the AirPorts, so that may possibly be the case here if the troubleshooting steps don't provide a solution. Apple does not furnish a list of compatible printers, so unfortunately it's a process of experimentation to see your device will work with the AirPort Extreme.

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • Trying to connect a second printer (this one wireless) through airport extreme.

I am such a dufus about anything related to setup!  Can I have two printers on my network, one connected by a cable and one wirelessly?  I just purchased a second printer for my home office so that I can access both printers from my MacBook Air.  The second printer is a Brother wireless one, and am trying to do the setup but can't figure out how.  I got to the step about the printer needing to "detect which mode - WiFi Protected Setup Mode or AOSS - your access oint/router uses...I pushed the little wireless setup button at the back of airport extreme, but keep getting an error message that says the printer "cannot detect a WLAN access point/router that has WPS or AOSS enabled."

Hello Gee Money. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Chances are pretty good that the signal from the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) down to the MacBook may not be sufficient three floors down.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the AEBSn, note the readings, and then, choose the locations where you will typically use your MacBook to access the Internet ... especially the location three floors below.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at each of these locations, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your AirPort. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the base station or the wireless clients until they are within a 20dB SNR range.
