Getting playlists back on my re-imaged laptop

Hi, my laptop was re-imaged about a month ago. I had my music on an external hard drive, and it is now back on my laptop. But my playlists are on my ipod, and I want to keep some of them (even though some songs have been "shedded" from the playlists over time - don't know a better term to describe). What will happen if I plug my ipod into the laptop? Will itunes detect the playlists and bring them back into itunes? I don't want to lose some of the playlists.

Hey there,
Since your iPod is synced with another computer, the iTunes on your new laptop will ask you if you would like to erase and sync, transfer purchases, or Cancel. You will want to cancel, if you still want to be able to transfer playlists from your iPod to iTunes.
I would check out YamiPod for accomplishing what you would like. You can actually just use this third party utility to copy all the music from your iPod to your iTunes library if you wanted. It has excellent tutorials on how to use it as well located under the "docs" link. Hope this helps.

  • Can I get playlists back if I've changed laptops and iTunes?

II've just got a new laptop. The py transferred my music from one laptop to the other but I had to re download iTunes. Is there any way of getting my playlists back I made on my old laptop on iTunes or do I need to make them all again?

If you copied over the whole iTunes folder then the playlists will be stored in the iTunes Library.itl file in the iTunes folder. Normally you would copy the entire folder into user's music on the new computer and it would be as if nothing had changed. If you added the media into a new library you wouldn't have got your playlists. If the library file is there, or can be retrieved from the old laptop the playlists can be recover from it. If you have any iPod or iOS devices that have your playlists there are ways to copy the data from them. If neither are possible then yes, you will have to start over.

  • Archive and Install - Getting Playlists Back

I was forced into re-installing Tiger due to the freezing issues with Leopard. The only option I had was "Archive and Install". I could not preserve user settings (it was greyed out). What is the best way to get my stuff back. In particular Playlists. I can easily find my songs and put them back in iTunes, but where did my playlists go? How can I get those back.

I'm afraid yes... I went to Disk Utility - File - New - Disk Image from folder. And then chose the folder with my user name. It goes ahead and creates the image file - which is 56kb btw.
The weird thing is that the Previous System file is 30gb. So, there is no way that my stuff is deleted. Just don't know how to get to it.
    Any ideas?

  • Getting Playlists back on Mac - music library was restored

I had to rebuild my G5 a while back. I restored all the music in my iTunes library but not the Playlists. The Playlists are on the iPod. Is there any way without using third party utilities I can get the Playlists back on the Mac. This does not involve copying music from the iPod to the Mac, because the music is already back on the Mac. I just need the Playlist definitions.
If I do need other software, any recommendations?
    Thanks.

    Hi Francisco,
Thanks for the reply. When searching on the software you recommended, I saw you provided the same reply a couple of weeks ago. I did not notice that reply when doing the original search on "Playlists", but thanks for replying without chastising me for an incomplete search.
It looks as though iGadget is a very complete package, which I will likely purchase in the future. I did try Senuti. I had two Playlists I wanted to copy from the iPod. Senuti handled the first one fine, and I was planning on purchasing it, but it stumbled on the second one. It kept saying it could not copy because an iTunes dialog was open, which was not the case. So I ended up not purchasing Senuti. For the second Playlist, I just manually created it and manually entered songs.
Thanks again, and GeorgeUK, hope the Francisco's reply was also helpful to you.

  • Computer formatted - want to rebuild iTunes library & get playlists back!

I had to get my computer formatted a while ago. My files were saved, including the iTunes folder in My Documents. I have downloaded iTunes and added my music to the library, but I have no idea how to get my playlists back. I've worked really hard to put them together. My iPod isn't synced yet, mostly because I don't want to lose my playlists and play counts, but I'm getting new albums and I will need to sync sometime. How can I rebuild my iTunes library, or at least get the playlists back? Please help, I beg you.

    Hi
This came off these forums and was posted by MacMuse (I think)
" The manual way around this problem is to use the iPod in its alter ego - that of portable computer disk drive. Successfully tested under iTunes for Windows 4.2 & 4.5; Windows XP. And follow these directions LINE BY LINE or iTunes will erase everything on the iPod.
    - Start with the iPod disconnected from the computer - DON'T CONNECT IPOD YET
    - open iTunes
    - open iTunes Preferences - this blocks iTunes from seeing an iPod connection; leave the preferences window up and running
    - connect the iPod to the computer, wait about 15 seconds before continuing
    - open 'My Computer'
    - Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab, enable 'show hidden files /folders'
    - open iPod icon in My Computer
    - open iPod_Control folder
    - you should see a folder named Music
    - drag this folder to somewhere on your computer hard drive
    - after the copy completes, right-click the new Music folder on your hard drive and select 'Properties'
    - clear the checkmark next to 'Hidden'
    - Close that explorer window
    - eject iPod from System tray "Safely Remove Hardware" icon.
This icon looks like a small gray rectangle with a green arrow floating above it. It's only there when a removable device (like the iPod in this case) is attached to the computer. Right-click & select 'Safely remove..', then click 'Stop' in the next window, OK in the next window, and then Close to complete the ejection.
    - disconnect the iPod from the computer
    - go back to iTunes, cancel the preferences window
    - File menu \ Add folder to Library \ find that Music folder copied over from the iPod
Your iTunes library should be back in action!"
This worked for me when I had to repartition and reformat my hard drive.

  • Possibility of getting playlists back?

    Hello -
I recently lost an external drive where my music was stored and iTunes library lived but fortunately I was able to move the files to my hard drive when it started acting hinky. I set it up on a new external and successfully re-established the library and all my music is there. Strangely, however, about 1/3 of my playlists are missing. not the music, just the playlist?
Is there a way to pull that back from a iPhone backup or a music backup (I was backing up the iTunes folder to the second external I have so it was fairly up to date). I don't need the whole library - just looking for those playlists b/c it took a bunch of time to do them.
Thanks for any help you can provide -
    Alexa
p.s. while I've got you, any thoughts on music being stored locally vs on an external? I had only some client work (also backed up - whew!) and my iTunes on this external but I play music all the time, including from my iPhone with the Remote app. Is it just as fine to keep accessing it off the external or should I keep it on my internal iMac hard drive? I have the room. Thanks!

    Hi Alexa,
There are ways to restore playlists with library backups, but the process can be complex and you also run the risk of losing your current playlists (If they do not exist in the backed up library)
To my knowledge you can't restore playlists from an iPhone/iPod as those devices are set so that music may only be added, not removed (includes playlists to my knowledge.)
With regard to storing music locally as opposed to and external hard drive, if possible I recommend local storage (mainly due to bad experiences with music on external HDs when they fail.) - As a rule of thumb I always recommend local storage of files as opposed to external storage (unless of course you've got a well established backup system.)
    Regards,
    Peter.

  • My screen is stuck on an enlarged version, so large that all I see is the wallpaper and no keypad to enter my password...how do I get this back to a normal image?

My screen is stuck on an enlarged version, so large that all I see is the wallpaper -- can't even see the keyboard to put in my password.  I have tried to reset it several times with no luck.  Any thoughts or has this ever happened to anyone else?  Thanks!

Yes.  This is the Zoom feature and is covered in the manual.
Your question is asked and answered several times each day.  A forum search ( the right side of this page) will find many threads on this.

  • All my playlists are gone on my iPad except purchased after syncing iPad to laptop. Is there a way to get them back?

I had about five playlists on my iPad, plus the Purchased playlist. I synced the iPad to my laptop using the USB cord. After that, I noticed that the only playlist on my iPad is Purchased. Is there a way to get the other playlists back? I checked my iTunes Library on my laptop and the playlists aren't there either.

Ringtones are a one-time only download from the store, they won't show in the Purchased links for redownloading for free - unless the phone was on iOS 8.1.1 when you bought them on it : Restore missing tones on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 8.1.1 - Apple Support
If you bought them on your old phone then did you copy them over to the Tones part of your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases - or have you still got that phone with the tones on it so that you can do so ? If you have then you can sync them to your new phone.
If you don't have a copy of them in your iTunes library, and your phone wasn't on iOS 8.1.1 when you bought them on it, then you could try contacting iTunes Support and see if they will grant you a redownload : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • How do i get back my playlists that have disappeared!!! they were backed up both on my laptop and the cloud

how do i get back my playlists that have disappeared!!! they were backed up both on my laptop and the cloud

Are you signed into itunes with your email address?  Purchases that are made through itunes are tied to the email address on your account.  If someone else logged in then your purchases wouldn't show.
When you go to the itunes store look at the black/gray bar at the top.  On the left is the email address that is signed in.  If it's incorrect just click on it and select "Sign Out."  When you sign back in all should be well.

  • All my images have disappear and how do I get them back

All my images in all Firefox pages have disappeared. You used to have a button that you could check off to load all images automatically. But its not there in this version on Firefox V24. Worse when this computer a laptop, sync with my desktop computer all images disappeared there as well
How do I get them back, and don't tell me I have to give permissions for each page, as I tried that and it didn't work either.

The setting is a little harder to access now, but here's how you do it:
    (1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
    (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''perm''' and pause while the list is filtered
    (3) If '''permissions.default.image''' is bolded ("user set") or for some other reason not set to the default value of 1, right-click it and choose Reset.
To confirm that this worked, you can switch back to the other tab and reload. Success?

  • How do I get my video playlists back on iPod Touch 4G after (epic fail) iOS6 update

As other users have identified, playlists present on iTunes on laptop but not on iPod touch 4G after iOS6 update except when select edit. Can I get them back? Not wasting time messing around. Either this is easily sortable or I get a new player from another maunfacturer - seems Apple can't be bothered to sort these issues so not sure I can be bothered with Apple anymore.

  • ITunes deleted my playlist, can I get it back?

I recently reformatted my laptop so I lost everything. I had to make new playlists so I did and when I synced it everything was fine. Then all of a sudden, my playlist disappeared and I now have no songs whatsoever on my iPhone. Is there anyway possible to get my playlist back ?

Create a new Smart Playlist and give it the settings of Date added is in the last 2 weeks. Make sure to check the Live Updating check box. You can also set how many items are in it.
    That should do the trick.

  • My laptop was stolen but "Find My Mac" has located it. Now how do I get it back?

    Hi All,
Early this morning, a friend of mine called me to tell me her laptop was stolen. She asked me to help her track it using iCloud find my mac. The theives also stole her wallet and other things from her car so this isn't something that was just misplaced and an innocent person came across it. My question is, now that I know where it is (within a couple hundred feet vicinity) what is the best approach I can use to get this back for my friend? She's got years of family pictures and does not have the laptop backed up so this is very important to her. Any ideas?
It shows the laptop around 4200 S Wade Way (about 3260 w), West Valley City, Ut
    Please, any advise would help!
    Thanks,
    Caleb

Well, I did contact the police with all this information. They actually went to one of the houses with me (the one on the corner) and it was an old man who was very polite who lived at home alone and didn't seem like the type. Instead of knocking on the other doors with me, the police said, "Your locating program is probably just wrong and it's not here." he wouldn't knock on any other doors so I plan on going tomorrow morning and knocking but the chances of anyone confessing are slim so I don't know what approach to go at with them. I don't know why find my mac doesn't let you leave a message like find my iPhone because I would leave a message saying "this mac has been misplaced. If you return it, the owner will reward you with $500 without pressing charges or asking how you came across the laptop. Please call -------, but, no. All I can do is knock. lol

  • How can I get a back-up of my laptop if I have restarted it?

I Recently Had to restart my laptop due to software issues and it would not let me use my back-up in the process, so I had to create a whole new thing. I have lost all that I used to have and was wondering if there is a way that I can maybe get it back. Do I have to send some e-mails maybe? I would really appreciate any help asap because i need s lot of the items that were lost.

If you didn't have your files backed up there's no way to get them back unless you buy some recovery software and hope that it can find your lost data. But there's no guarantee it will.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
