Getting repeated "unreponsive script" messages

I've been using Firefox for a number of years but in the last month or two I have been receiving numerous "unresponsive script" errors to the point where I am totally unable to use the browser at all. Usually happens first thing in the morning and seems to not happen as much the more I am able to use Firefox. I am using FF 36.0.1 with Windows 7. I've tried changing the amount of time JS has to respond. Tried disabling all plugins and add-ons and then enabling them one at a time. I tried resetting Firefox. I installed "yesscript" addon and added one of the websites giving me the most trouble and that does not do anything different. Probably tried some other stuff too but so far nothing has worked. I am at the point where Firefox is rendered nearly unuseable. But as I said usually later in the day it works as expected as though JS managed to get started somehow. Not that smart about JS.
I am almost to the point where I am ready to ditch Firefox and use another browser that does not give me this problem. I like FF and do not want to use anything else. Can someone PLEASE help me? This has become a major frustration to me and trying to use the internet. I am on and off the internet all day long and cannot deal with this problem much longer.

One reason for frequent slow script errors is the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. I don't see the plugin notification icon in the address bar of your screen shots, so maybe that is not relevant in this case. But I'll provide this for future reference just in case.
The Protected Mode feature has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches for that:
* Adobe support article under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]
* Manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/968190?page=5#answer-509209
* Batch file to automate the manual steps: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/982093#answer-518078 (alternate version of Carm's batch file with a few changes by me: [https://onedrive.live.com/?cid=f7d304d92388737d&id=F7D304D92388737D!336&ithint=file,.bat&authkey=!AP2FXW2Y_3BXZyo])
Flash needs to completely unload from memory (exiting and starting Firefox up again might help) before this takes effect.
Any improvement?

  • Firefox initally opens fine , but when I try to open another tab Firefox hangs or I get an unresponsive script message

firefox initally opens fine right to my homepage. Then a few minutes later it starts hanging and I cannot scroll or do anything until it connects. Similarly when I try to open a new tab, the new tab either hangs forever, or I get an unresponsive script error message. I have tried resetting firefox and starting firefox in safe mode. nothing seems to help.

  • I have tried all of the above solutions and I am still getting repeated crashes or messages interrupting anything I am trying to do

At first the messages and crashes were only happening if I tried to play a game (Farmville) on Facebook. Then after a week I started getting the crashes and messages on Facebook. Now I get interrupted and crashes and messages on my Hotmail, Facebook and anything else I try to do. I have done all of the solutions on your site but none of them have stopped this. It did work a bit better when I downgraded the Flash to 10.3. But that only lasted a couple of hours and then I was right back to the way it is now. It makes it very frustrating to try to type an email, answer a friend, check my facebook and god forbid I try to play my game. I have actually gone two days in a row not even being able to get on to the game never mind play it. The message I keep getting is: Shockwave Flash might be busy or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the plug in now or you can see it the plug in will continue. If I don't click the wait button soon enough, then it crashes. If I click the wait button, I might get the same message over and over for almost ten minutes minutes before I can continue. Not only does it freeze the game, but it also freezes the computer. I can't get off, I can't go open another tab, if I have my emails open doesn't matter because everything freezes and I can't continue with anything until it stops. I am really sick and tired of this, its been going on for so long but it used to happen once maybe in half an hour, now what used to take me an hour to do on the computer can take upto 8 hours and thats only checking my game, email, etc., once. I used to be able to go on in the morning for an hour and then back on a night for an hour or so before bed. Not now. Please help, I don't know what else to do

  • I am getting this unresponsive script message when googling and its causing firefox to freeze "chrome:/wrc/content/common/scripts/bal.js:854" - Any advice?

When I try an google certain web sites including "NFL" firefox freezes and I get the unresponsive script chrome:/wrc/content/common/scripts/bal.js:854". I uninstalled Google Chrome but still have the same problem.

Thanks to philipp: I disabled the avast addon (from) when I updated to avast 9.0.2008, and the unresponsive script has stopped freezing firefox during google searches.
PS, I added this addon in it's place, Trustwave SecureBrowsing: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/m86security-secure-browsing/eula/224305?src=search
It's not too bad, and seems to be more thorough than the avast addon.
I also use the web of trust (WOT) addon.

  • Every time I start up FireFox I get an "Unresponsive Script" message, is there any way to fix this as it's slowing down everything

    Here's the message I get:
"A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
    Script: file:///Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/components/nsBrowserContentHandler.js:291"
I've tried deleting firefox and re-downloading and installing it but it's no help.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Why i get this "Unresponsive script" message

Another problem with the Firefox browser which shows the following message. " A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.
The following message, causing Firefox to be stuck and freezes, as is evident in the tab bar of Firefox.
And I try to close some of the tab bar but is still unable to respond which means that I have to wait to be able to browse again.

This sort of message can have many causes, and is often due to a problem site or problem add-on.
    * do you only get the message on specific sites, or when doing certain tasks ?
*What is the actual message, is it the same each time ?
    * to see if the problem relates to additional software try Firefox in safe mode
** see [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]] <br/> on XP use Help -> restart with add-ons disabled <br/> do not make changes in the first window with check box options, just click on continue.

  • I get the "unresponsive script" message now for nearly all sites, and sometimes this is followed by the popup box saying that the "plugin contain for Firefox has stopped working."

Many sites now say that a script is unresponsive. And by unresponsive I mean that the whole browser slows to a crawl and it can take ~20 minutes to get 2 pages loaded.
Also, I sometimes get a popup window saying the the plugin container has stopped working.
This whole issue is making Firefox unusable. I cringe to say it, but I'm currently in IE. :-/

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Plugin-container_and_out-of-process_plugins

  • Lately, when I get the "Unresponsive Script" message, Neither the cancel nor the complete script button will work and Firefox hangs so I have to Force Quit Firefox. What is wrong?

Here is the link below the message about the unresponsive script:
    Script: chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xml:554
Neither of the buttons will work "Stop Script" or "Continue" and since Firefox is frozen or just hanging, I have to Force Quit. Today I was trying to print off a confirmation for a convention and every time I was ready to print, the Unresponsive Script would show up and freeze the printing too. After 4 times, I finally made a Grab Shot of it to print.

ive also repaired disk permissions using disk utility and disk warrior.

  • When Firefox tries to open another window, I get a failed script message: Script: chrome://tavgp/content/libs/include.js:595 and I get asked to continue or stop it. When I stop it, the new window opens. How do I fix this?

Whenever I try to open another Firefox window (by right clicking on a link or if a link tries to open a window - like printing Google maps/directions), I get a pop-up window that says a script is busy or not responding and gives me the choice to continue or stop script. The new window will only open if I choose stop script. The offending script is always: Script: chrome://tavgp/content/libs/include.js:595
    How do I fix this?

That is a problem with an AVG extension or toolbar.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Aurora/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

i have the tabmixplus 0.3.8.6 extension and i had firefox 4 a few weeks ago and never had a problem.
    windows 7 ultimate edition

that was useful. i tried to google the error, but the official extension forum did not show up at that time...it was listed, it seems to be a tabmix plus with colorful tabs error....i have disabled colorful tabs, cause its less useful than tabmix. thanks again for the help.

  • Firefox 14.1 & 15 hangs on Google periodically (unresponsive script message) Adobe flash 11.4

Ever since Adobe Flash 11.4 Ive been experiencing freezing issues on certain sites mainly Google though when ever it hangs I get a unresponsive script message now started around June I had a very similar problem to this one but it was fixed because from 2nd to 20th it didn't freeze once and during this time I was using Adobe Flash 11.3.300.271 and no time after this Flash update I started having problems again I mean I know it has to be the Flash update because if I was going to have any problems with the last version it would've happened within two weeks time how do I know it happens every few days give or take also I should mention I tried disabling to protection mode in Flash 11.4 it didn't help

Well I'm pretty sure its the Flash Player although I had protection mode disabled and now that I look at the Java Script I see that it had an update recently on the 31 of August and that's when it froze up well before that it did freeze on the 23rd but was because of a conflict between Avast and Sandboxie which was quickly fixed by Sandboxie. Here Ill attach a screenshot of the error message I'm starting to believe its Java because when it did freeze before I didn't get any bad script message from FF it just would hang/freeze and now ever single time it freezes it gives me a script message.
PS: If anyone else is having this same problem please feel free to leave a reply/comment and describe the problem thanks.

  • Who wrote the software that creates unresponsive script messages and why did they do it?

A few years ago I switched from IE5 to Mozilla Firefox because people recommended it. At first it was great. But gradually, more and more I get the Unresponsive Script message. I am running Windows XP with Norton security.
I have not added any other software since I switched to Firefox, apart from switching from Dialup to Broadband.. It does not matter if I click on 'Stop' or 'continue'. I have Firefox set up to automatically update. Invariably the error message is about a script that starts with'a.gfx' or something similar. I do not want this, did not ask for it, have not changed my habits or the types of websites i visit. I do not expect to have to become technically competent at removing software, because this was not a problem before I switched to Firefox and it ran fine to start with. Now Mozilla seems slow to start is another message I get . The problem seems to be Firefox not anything I have done. I want a browser that does not give me problems. Before I take my laptop to a computer shop, I would like to know why it was not a problem before and why Firefox has done this to me. If I have to buy a new computer withourt a proper explanation, I will not use firefox in future and I will tell people that Mozilla could not solve my problems. The least you could do is to (a) give me a thorough explanation and (b) send me an update that will fix all this.

"gfx" often refers to the features of Firefox that interact most closely with your graphics card software. As this can change over time, it is possible that Firefox has become incompatible with your old graphic card drivers, or that it is incompatible with the new drivers.
The standard workaround for this is to disable Firefox's use of hardware acceleration for graphics. There is a checkbox for this:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
That will take effect the next time you start Firefox.
More generally, it would be helpful to get more of the error message. You could grab a screenshot when you see it, and save those to see whether there is a pattern. This article has tips on screenshots: [[How do I create a screenshot of my problem?]]

  • Repeated "Unknown error" messages using selection tools, CS5.1 Illustrator

Installed a Creative suite 5.5 (Master) upgrade where Illustrator (like Photoshop) is renamed CS5.1. Getting repeated "unknown error" message when trying to select an object. I've reinstalled, trashed preference plists, repaired permissions. The annoying error is showing up under MacOS Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (including today's updated) and MacOs Lion.  Anyone else on Mac platform experiencing this issue with the Creative Suite 5.5 upgrade? If this can't be resolved soon I will uninstall this version and reinstall the CS5 suite version of Illustrator. But I really don't want to go there after shelling out for the upgrade. Thanks for any feedback.

Adobe posted a troubleshooting document in Illustrator area:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/824/cpsid_82414.html
I read it thoroughly since I am still experiencing the popup error messages when using either selection tool on objects.  I did a uninstall and install of CS5.1 (CS5.1 for the suite 5.5 upgrade) and did not install the VectorScribe and XtreamPath 1.4 plugins. The "unplugged" Illustrator worked fine. I then installed VectorScribe -- no problems. Then XtreamPath 1.4 - voila the error popped up.
Anyone else use XtreamPath 1.4 with Lion and had problems? I sent CSValley Support to ask if their plugin works under Lion (according to their system specs, it should).
UPDATE  8-5-11:  (CSValley promptly replied back that they had not received any issues similar to mine.)
I installed both plugins (VectorScribe and XP 1.4) on my Macbook Pro and had no problems there which led me to think the XP plugin might be corrupted on my main work machine (MacPro). So I copied the plugin from the MBP to the MacPro and happily (knock on wood) am not getting the error messages.
Somewhere along the way of installing the CS5.5 upgrade and MacOSLion, my XtreamPath plugin was affected.

  • To Host-"Slow script" message on overlong thread

    To Host,
I've been following this overlong thread "Network Preference Pane gone berserk..."
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1712387&tstart=0
and getting a "slow script" message two or three times using Safari, and need to keep clicking on the "continue" button before it will load completely. Very slow with Firefox also, but without the message.
I don't know if it's me or the server in this situation, but would it help, perhaps, to break it up into pages to eliminate this problem? I thought that was what was usually done with such long threads.
Also- to hosts- as you must have seen, there have been numerous reports concerning this particular problem with Security Updates 2008-006/7. I know this is a user to user forum and that your job is not to reply to technical issues, but I've been told that Apple technical does monitor these forums. Do you have any way of knowing if Apple is going to take some action in the form of an official announcement or a response of some kind?
    Thanks.
