Getting rid of bootcamp partition

I partitioned my disk w/Boot Camp tools for a Windows partition (20GB FAT32). Now, I'd like to dump windows and claim that space back to my single, larger partition without having to wipe everything out and rebuild the drives.
Is this possible in 10.4.11? How about in 10.5?
Alternatively, could I wipe the FAT drive, redo it in an Apple format, and just leave it as a partitioned data drive? Does that create permissions management issues for me on a Mac with multiple users? (I'm terrible with managing user access and permissions, so I'd like to avoid this approach if it requires managing permissions)
Any help is appreciated.

Use the Boot Camp Assistant in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to remove the partition, or use the Disk Utility to either erase that partition, or in Mac OS X 10.5, merge the two partitions.

You lack the knowledge needed to do this, example; You want to use the 35G partition for Parallels, but Parallels does not use a partition, so that won't work.
Backup the entire drive, Delete the entire drive and start again. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS THIS TIME

  • How do I safely get rid of a partition?

    hi
i recently bought a powrmac g4 off ebay with a 933 Mhz processor, 1.25 GB RAM and a 120 gig HD that was partitioned into 2 drives (by, i assume, the previous owner) with one of them running the OS. I just installed a new shiney Maxtor 200 gig HD and wanted to get rid of the partition in the 1st HD but still boot from it. The problem is that the OS already on the drive is newer than the one that I have the disk for, so if I erase it (the drive) then re-install the OS with the disk I have, it will be out of date. The other problem is that I'm not sure of the risks involved in this operation; there are some applications on the 1st HD that I don't have the disks for (as they came with the computer) that are valuable and I don't want to lose.
    So...
How do I safely get rid of the partition on the 12o GB hard drive?
    Thanks
    Dave

Use the Restore function of Disk Utility or CarbonCopyCloner to copy all the files from the 120GB HD to the new HD. Then boot to the new HD & use Disk Utility to erase & format the 120GB HD to one partition. (Make sure the new HD & files are working properly before you erase the old HD.)
You may be able to use only 128GB on the 200GB HD. Look at these links.

  • How to get rid of the partition? all options grayed out.

How do I get rid of the Windows partition? I went to the disk utility and selected my hard drive but all the partition options are grayed out. Similarly, when I select the NTFS partition, I cannot erase it.
I want to merge the partitions, create one single partition. I do not care if all the information is lost, only that my hard drive is unified and clean again. How do I do this?

    Hi,
Hi Ryan and welcome to Discussions,
have you looked inside your Applications/Utilities Folder for an app named 'BootCamp Assistant' ?
    If there, consider yourself lucky
Don't run it yet, since it won't work with your current date and time.
Follow the instructions here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1309?viewlocale=en_US to completely remove the BootCamp Windows partition and reassign the used diskspace back to OSX.
If you don't find the BootCamp Assistant in the Utilities folder, you have to boot from your OSX Tiger DVD to repartition your harddisk to one OSX volume and then reinstall Tiger and/or restore your OSX from a backup.

  • How do I get rid of a partition in a LaCie external hard drive?

I just bought a new LaCie 1 TB external hard drive and while setting it up I didn't realize that by default it set a 200 GB Windows partition. I really would like to get rid of it since I am a 100% Mac user but don't know how to do it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • How Do I Get Rid Of Disk Partitions/Images?

    Hey folks,
When I bought my iMac flat panel from a friend, he partitioned the hard drive into 3 'disks' or disk images. The problem I'm having, is that I would like to get rid of one of them and use that storage for the main disk; the disk with the startup info. on it.
How in the heck do I do this? I've located about 134, 765 articles on how to CREATE partitions, but none on how how to get rid of them, or combine them into others.
    Help?
iMac flat panel   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you use only Apple's software then the only way is to Erase the drive with Disk Utility and set one partition only.
Clearly this will erase all data on the drive.
There are some 3rd party utilities that allow partitions to be removed/created without erasing the drive.
Given the nature of what you are doing here; I'd recommend fully backing up all your data before doing anything of this nature.

  • Get rid of the partitions on my macbook (black)

i recently made a partition for windows (through bootcamp) and instead of loading windows, i loaded Ubuntu, i didnt like it so i tried to get my 20gb of partition space back, now i cant, and in the process of trying to get it back my computer made another partition of 2gb. How do i get these 22gb back to just mac os x?
ps, i am in the process of restoring my laptop..
    thanks for the help!

ok, so i got the big partitions deleted, but i have one left that i cant delete, its called "Linux Swap", it wont let me mount it to delete it. To delete the others I went to disc utility --> (my hard drive) --> and clicked partition on the top of it. i can make my hard drive from 96 to 111 gb, but when i try to apply this it says "partition failed", how do i get my 15gb back? and how do i delete this Linux swap, which has 1gb of my hd space

  • How to get rid of hidden partitions display in Disk Utility?

Running Snow Leopard I used the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1) to enable the Disk Utility Debug Menu. I then turned on the Show Every Partition so I could see the hidden partitions (but grayed out) in the disk/volume list. I then turned off Show Every Partition and they became hidden again.  I disabled the Debug Menu using the Terminal (defaults write com.apple.DiskUtility DUDebugMenuEnabled 0). The Debug menu went away, but the hidden partitions still show up again after quitting and restarting DU. Rebooting computer doesn't help either.
It appears that display of all partitions is permanent. Does anyone have ideas on what to do to get back to the default display?

I stumbled on the answer. When I just quit Disk Utility the hidden partitions come back on restarting DU. If I select Close from the File menu, the display of the hidden partitions goes away and doesn't come back after quitting and restarting DU.

  • Cant get rid of Partition

I try to get rid of a bootcamp partition that i had set aside for windows vista. I have seen the earlier topics regarding this problem and i go to boot camp assistant and try to click continue so i can get rid of the partition but it just says "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."

you made a Time machine partition on the same drive as the OS? that's a bad idea. you should get a different drive and back up to that. if anything happens to your main drive you'll loose everything at once.
try deleting the TM partition using disk utility so that you only have two partitions. absorb the resulting free space into the OS X partition. see if bootcamp assistant lets you remove the windows partition after that. if this doesn't work (it may not) then clone the OS X partition to another drive, boot from that drive, reformat the internal drive to one partition and clone the clone back. you can use CCCloner or Superduper for cloning. you can also just use the restore tab in disk utility.

  • Getting rid of partitions

Several years ago when I got my eMac, I partitioned the hard drive to four equal partitions, each approximately 9GB. I want to upgrade from OSX 3.9 to OSX 5. The problem is it requires 11+GB of space to install and I can't figure out how to get rid of the partitioning. Can anyone tell me? I have moved all of my data to the external drive so nothing will be lost by geting rid of the partitions and reformatting if necessary.

To add detail to paton's reply, once you're booted into the installer, skip through the first language screen, and go to the Utilities menu. From there you can run Disk Utility, and the Partition tab will allow you to repartition the drive. Once done, quite Disk Utility to continue the installation process.

  • Lion Bootcamp partition compatible with SL?

I have Lion installed (clean install) and am unhappy with the performance to say the least.  In my experience SL was more stable with my video apps.
Anyhow, I've created a bootcamp partition via Lion to install Windows 7 (what a PITA).  I want to format the Lion partition and reinstall SL.
    My question is:
Are there any issues with using SL with my bootcamp partition that was created with Lion's newer version of bootcamp?

Same difference as I believe a reinstall erases first then installs. To be sure though Start from the SL dvd and go to utilities and erase the Mac partition then install. As BootCamp is a separate partition it should be untoched.
You will undoubtedly have the Lion restore partition left but it is invisible to Disk utility. Here is the procedure I followed to get rid of this partition since I have the Lion USB install thumb drive and do not need it.
    1) Make the Recovery visible in Disk Utility by using a program like Secrets:http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27025/secrets or MacPilot:http://www.koingosw.com/products/macpilot.php (15 day free trial).
    2) Highlite the Recovery partition and Control click it and select Mount the partition.
    3) With the Recovery partition highlited, erase the partition, you'll get an error message, ignore it.
    4) Now highlite the top identity of the hard drive and select the partition tab.
    5) Highlite the Recovery partition and press the minus sign.
    6) Click and hold on the bottom edge of the partition above and drag it to the bottom, if it doesn't go there automatically, the press apply.

  • Wrongly deleted bootcamp partition with discutility

I wrongly deleted the bootcamp/windows by diskutility. Now I cant get rid of the partition. I know I should have done it with bootcamp. Is there a way to do it now, after the incorect procedure??
OS X 10.10  Windows 7  Time Machine backup

Can you post the output of
    diskutil list
    diskutil cs list
sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0
Sudo commands require your password, which is not echoed back to you. You may also see a warning about improper use, and potential data loss, if abused.

  • Can I get rid of a windows partition on a MacBook running 10.4.11 without having bootcamp or bootcamp beta?

Can I get rid of a windows partition on a MacBook running 10.4.11 without having bootcamp or bootcamp beta? If so, how?

Yes, I think so, as would Snow Leopard probably. If your computer meets the requirements it would only cost $29 to buy Snow Leopard versus $129 for Leopard.
    Snow Leopard General requirements
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    Leopard System requirements
You must have a Macintosh computer with:
an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor
    a DVD drive >built-in FireWire
at least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM is recommended for development purposes)
a built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
at least 9 GB of disk space available, or 12 GB of disk space if you install the developer tools

  • I want to get rid of my bootcamp partition but ='( i accidently deleted bootcamp assistant and now dont know how to delete partition any where i can re-dowload assistant plz helppppppp

I know u need assitant to get rid of parititon but i dont have it so what do i do

Personally I would use Pacifist from Chralessoft http://www.charlessoft.com/ to reinstall the BootCamp Assistant from your OSX Installation disc and afterwards running the latest Combo-Updater for your OSX.
The best way is to use the BootCamp Assistant again which should give you the option to remove the made Windows partition and revert back to one OSX volume.
After that's done a reboot of your Mac might be advisable.
Only if that's not working (whatever the reason) :
    1) boot your Mac from your OSX install DVD
    2) choose your language and then 'ignore' (cancel) the installation
    3) from the Top Menu (Utilities) start Disk Utility (DU)
    4) in DU click on your harddisk (not any partition) in the left pane (the first item listed)
    5) in the right pane use the 'Partition'-Tab
    6) click to highlight on the ex-Windows partition you want to delete
    7) click on the small '-' Button at the bottom
That should delete your former Windows partition
    After that's done successfully
    8) Drag the partition separator line until it encompasses the entire drive and then select apply.
    9) Quit Disk Utility
    10) reboot your Mac from your harddisk.
Since you are 'fumbling' with your OSX partition you should consider having/making a backup of it before trying the a.m. procedure. Just in case.
A Disk Repair with Disk Utility is not doable for an OSX volume from which you have booted your Mac.
Boot from the OSX Install DVD to repair your OSX on the harddisk.

  • Bootcamp. What is it and How do I get rid of it?

I accidentally initiated the Bootcamp option on my Imac, and cannot get rid of it. What is it and how do I get rid of it? Thanks.

If you started BootCamp, it should have partitioned your drive (default 32GB) and now be asking for a WinXP disk to begin the install process. If you quit the process, then all you need to do is run BootCamp again and choose to restore your HD partition back to a single partition.
    Hope that helps,
