Getting rid of computer...what I do to wipe my info?

I am getting rid of an old computer with OSX. What measures should I take so that the new owner will have a fresh start without any of my info still available.
I am hoping there is a way of doing this without wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS.
I guess I should say that this is an office computer going to another office of my company, so there is no VERY personal info, just work related. So I just need a basic account wipe.

I'm assuming that you have not been putting things outside your home directory.
If you have admin access to the computer, the easiest thing would be to create an account for the new user with access to administer the computer, log in as that user, and delete your existing user. If you press the "Delete immediately" button when asked, it will remove your whole user folder in addition to your ID. The new account will be fresh and will have default preferences when they user uses applications.
If you do not have administrative access, you can pretty much get the same result by deleting everything in each of the folders in your home directory (and any stray files in your home directory).
If you are concerned about people trying to restore files you've deleted, it might be a good idea to investigate utilities that will write over the open space after you've deleted the files, and you might want to eliminate system logs if you've been doing anything you really don't want people to know about.

You can set Firefox back to using the default theme. Open the add-ons manager (in the tools menu select Add-ons), in the add-ons manager go to the Themes panel. Click on the Default theme in the list of themes then click on the "Use Theme" button.

I am getting a new computer: what do I need to backup onto an external hard drive so that I will be able to sync the ipad with the new computer without losing anything?

I am getting a new computer and need to be sure to back things up from the old computer in order to put everything onto the new computer. I know that itunes music I have uploaded from cd's will not sync from ipad to new computer, but what else should I be aware I will lose when I move to sync with the new computer?

IMHO the best solution is to clone your disk. That will give you a copy of everything. You can do that with either SuperDuper or CCC.

How to get rid of "Computer" in Open and Save dialogs

Is this new? I don't remember that before the last or second-last OS update the computer's name appeared, above the mounted volumes, in the left panel of the Open and Save dialogs.
Note that in the Finder windows, the computer doesn't appear, as set in the Finder's Preferences.
So obviously my question is: How to remove the computer's name from the Open and Save dialogs' left panel?

You can most often just take the default action by pressing the "joystick" center button (without going through the menus).

Sometimes when I open a new tab, I get a blank burgundy screen that covers up the window and sometimes I can get rid of it and sometimes not. At this point, I'm ready to totally get rid of Firefox. what is going on?

When I click on the plus sign by tabs, a burgundy blank screen appears over my window, blocking the tab groups except for the top portion. I can still see the URL address field and the tabs above but when I click on a tab, it comes up beneath the blank burgundy new screen on my window. I then have to open a new window but I have to start over on the tabs. I can't use the ones behind the burgundy screen. sometime when I click on the home icon the blank screen goes away, sometimes not.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Navigation Toolbar" and the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible: "View > Toolbars"
* If items are missing then open the Customize window via "View > Toolbars > Customize" or via "Firefox > Options > Toolbar Layout"
* If a missing item is in the toolbar palette then drag it back from the Customize window on the toolbar
* If you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar set up.

Anyone know how to get rid of "iPhoto wants to access your confidential Facebook info" that pops up every time I use it?

I just updated to the new iPhoto and it asks "Iphoto wants to use your confidential info stored in "api.facebook.com" in your keychain. With only 3 things- always allow -deny- or allow. I want ALWAYS DENY. SO THIS POPS UP EVERYTIME I USE IPHOTO! Am I going to have to deal with this notice the rest of my use on Apple and Facebook? I will never "allow" this!

Bloatware and other junk - what's what and how do I get rid of it.

I have a new Toshiba Satellite L650 series. For the most part I am very pleased with it. I am aware that there is "bloatware, Junk" software preloaded. However, I do not know how to tell what is junk and what I might actually need. Names and even the brief descriptions of the stuff has not proved helpful. Sooooo, the limited info I have found about getting rid of it seems to assume I know what I want to get rid of and what I want to keep.
Q 1) Is there anywhere that will give me a more detailed explanation of what each of these items are or do?
Q 2) Any lists of what I absolutely need to keep and not uninstall or I will have a big problem somewhere?
Q 3) If there are no specifics how about some general guidelines?
Q 4) Is there any downloads out there that are safe (free would be nice too) that just removes the unnecessary crap?
Q 5) Why oh why to otherwise honorable computer companies like Toshiba plauge us with this stuff? At least give us an easy button to get rid of it. I understand having to put up with advertisements when you get something free but not when you fork out money.

A 1) Read your User Guide, do a search on Google, read the info on these utilities on the Toshiba site. I've never had a problem finding what each utility was for/did when I really looked for it.
A 2) I wouldn't uninstall anything. At sometime or another almost all the utilities are needed/useful. Instead use MSConfig.exe and remove the check marks in the 'Startup' tab from the utilities loading there that you do not use. Use services.msc to stop and/or disable the Toshiba services you do not use. Both these methods make it easy to re-enable or restart these utilities, should you find it necessary.
A 3) See A1 and A2
A 4) Not that I know of. What is necessary or unnecessary here is actually a very subjective thing. It depends on the user.
A 5) This a peer support forum. This is just other users and Toshiba owners trying to help each other out. Please contact customer service, write a letter to the CEO, write a review on a consumer report site, etc, with your complaints.

Using another web browswer until you get rid of Firefox 4. What a disaster! When do you plan to fix it.!!!

What a nightmare Firefox 4 have been. I have warned everyone else not to upgrade to this horrible browser. Which is sad, since I used to recommend it to everyone. I don't like IE or Safari, but I like them better than Firefox 4 so I will be using another browser until you fix whatever it was you did to the new update. Very inconvenient to have to change all my bookmarks and info that I have used on Mozilla since it first came out. I hope you are working on it since there is page after page of similar responses. When can we expect this to be fixed?

EDIT: How did you update your Firefox? If you downloaded a new copy but didn't download from the official Mozilla website:

Then you will need to uninstall and reinstall Firefox by downloading a new copy from one of those two links.

I want to rename my computer, it's this weird long name now. I know, I don't have to, I don't need to. I just want to. Besides all my design docs and image links, will iPhoto or iTunes be affected at all?

We are not disputing that this program can change the User Account short name. We are just clarifying what is what in this thread.
And the what is what is that there are two things being mixed together here; changing the computer's name, which can be done at will and as often as one likes and the shortname from the User Account, which under normal circumstances cannot be changed without creating a mess.
Which is why it takes a specially written program to change it and yet, as you pointed out so emphatically, still could make a mess and one should change it at one's own risk!
Besides, if you were getting rid of the G3, why not just wipe the hard drive and install a fresh OS X?!?

Double click the home button then swipe the google app up to close it. If that doesn't work, press and hold both the home and power buttons 10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Release both buttons. Wait 15-20 seconds till your iPad starts on it's own. If that doesn't work try deleting and reinstalling app.
