Getting Rid Of Files In Stacks?

Not sure if it's possible, but in my stacks I get my Microsoft Office User Data folder, and a couple of other bits I don't want in there!
Can I get ride of this?
If so.........HOW?

If they are in your Dock, then just drag them off the dock. They'll go "poof" and won't be there any more. No, the originals will remain wherever they happen to be.

    When a user is on my website and mouses over a link to another page, the name of that page comes up - for example, if I mouse over the link to the Mums Night Out page (while on the home page) the file name pops up (mumsnightout.html)

    Is this question now solved?
    Excuse me if it is, but I am really freaking out about this and don't know what to do.
    I don't want to launch my website before everything is perfect and I really want the yellow-pop-up-box-bstrd to go away.
    I am using this code which works fine in ff and safari but not in ie:
    <script type='text/javascript'>
    function clearTooltip() {
    _links = parent.document.links;
    for (i=0; i<_links.length; i++) {
    _links.setAttribute('title', '');
    chkFooter = setInterval('checkFooter()', 100);
    function checkFooter() {
    if (parent.document.getElementById('footer_layer') != null) {
    clearTooltip();
    clearInterval(chkFooter);
    </script>
    Should I modify it in some way? Any ideas?

  • How to get rid of scrolling in stacks

    How can I either:
    #1. Turn OFF the scrolling function in stacks
    or
    #2. Resize the icons so they all fit without scrolling.
    I used to use stacks as a quick launcher. This worked great on my 15 inch MBP, both standalone and when docked with a 30" monitor, as well as on my 22" Mac Pro at home. Click the stacks, and I would get an instant overview of all my apps, or documents, and instantly choose what I wanted.
    With this recent "refinement", it now takes me longer, and I have to manually position the mouse over a scroll bar to see all of the content.
    So for me, this was actually LESS user friendly. Is there anywhere I can modify this new default setting, to get rid of this thing.
    Anyone know how?

    But this is just my point. I DON'T have tons of stuff in these folders. That's why it's annoying.
    The problem is that the icons are HUGE. Waaay bigger than they needed to be. Why can't there be an option to have them auto-resize?? Or at least make them smaller. Now they are almost too big to read comfortably.
    I know SL supports greater icon resolution than Leopard, but I'm not THAT nearsighted (or farsighted... forget which one)

  • How can I get rid of files that cannot be imported error message

    Hello, this is my first post. I am a new mac user. I have imported my jpgs from an external hard drive which was in the most part successful, however, 14 of the files appear to be corrupted and every time I open iphoto9, I get the error message, '14 of your files could not be imported, would you like to import them now?' I have tried choosing both options yes and no and it then writes error message telling me it has created recovered photos folder. When you go to this folder it is empty and every time I restart iphoto, I get the same message. I have tried deleting all the files and re-importing only to find that the number of corrupted files has now doubled. I have also deleted the iphotos library recovered photo folders to no avail. I have tried creating a new library and importing the files to that but the same problem occurred. How can I get rid of this repeated error as I am now up to recovered folder number 47! Help!

    P Robbins
    Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
    quit iPhoto and right click (control click) on the iPhoto library (in the pictures folder by default) and select the show package contents command - find the import (or importing) folder and drag it to the desktop and launch iPhoto - you should be fine now - open the import(ing) folder on your desktop and if there are any photos you want import them then trash the folder

  • Can't get rid of files with sudo rm: Operation not permitted?!?

    I just noticed that I have a few directories in my files that have a username of "unknown" from GetInfo (username of 314112960 from ls -l) and can't be touched by me. I opened Terminal, and tried to "sudo chown" and "sudo chmod" them; both came back with "Operation not permitted". Can someone tell me how it's possible that su is not allowed to touch them, and more importantly, how I go about civilizing them so that I can see what's there and get rid of it? Thanks,
    Mike

    ls -lod yourfile
    If it says schg, then you have to reboot into single
    user's mode (hold down command-s while the machine
    reboots), then run fsck (the prompts will suggest
    what to type, so you don't have to memorize it here),
    then mount the file system, run fsck again if there
    was a problem reported the first time, and when you
    get the all clear, then navigate to where the file
    is, issue the command
    chflags noschg yourfile
    rm -R yourfile
    and then run fsck one more time (it helps to be
    paranoid) and then reboot.
    Thanks for the specific instructions! I did that and here's what happened.
    The first fsck said everything was fine. The chflags was ok as well. I tried to chown both directories then, to see what was there, and the first time it failed with a "operation not allowed" error. I then did rm -R on one of the directories, and it disappeared. I then tried the chown again on the other one, and it worked! Weird. Maybe there's some latency here somehow. Anyway, I decided I wanted the whole thing gone and I did an rm -Rf on it, and it deleted almost everything, except for one file, which was a link to a nonexistent file (it had an ls -l of "lrwxrwxrwx" (is that a hard link?). When I try to delete that one, it says "no such file or directory". I thought rm was supposed to delete the link, not the file the link is pointing to! Anyway, I couldn't think of any way to get rid of it - it just won't let me do it. Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of this link? It's sitting at the bottom of a long tree of directories and I'd now like the whole thing gone... Oh and then I fsck'd again, which said no error, and I rebooted. Finder won't let me delete it either (error 43, file cannot be found). What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Getting Rid of Files in All My Files

    i don't know how to this: In All My Files under PDF Documents, I have about 482 pdf documents I don't want to keep. Example..a zillion used Groupon Coupons. Is there a way to get rid of these documents, with out having to highlight each one and dragging 10 at a time into the trash? Thanks for any help

    I've chosen not to show all my files as I find that superfluous; however, I believe that is only a list of the files, not the files themselves. I think you will need to find the files in their actual location/folder.

  • How Do I Get Rid of Files that Always Lose Permissions?

    Seem to be having numerous system problems lately and in working through these, I'm rebuilding permissions frequently
    What I see are pretty much the same files over and over whose permissions "differ." Many of these files seem to refer to resources for languages other than the one I typically use (English), such as:
    "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/Dutch.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib".
    "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/Italian.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib".
    "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Support/Remo te Desktop Message.app/Contents/Resources/Spanish.lproj/UIAgent.nib".
    System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/French.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib".
    "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Support/Remo te Desktop Message.app/Contents/Resources/German.lproj/UIAgent.nib".
    "System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu/Contents/Resources/Japanese.lproj/RemoteDesktopMenu.nib".
    These aren't the ONLY files whose permissions need to be fixed but the files mentioned above show up over an over again.
    The question is - do I need these files to begin with? If they're optional, how do I get rid of them?
    Thanks for any help offered.

    However, if you'd like to elaborate on the problems that you were experiencing, some of us may be able to offer more advice.
    It began with having QuarkXpress (ver 8.5.1) freeze EVERY time I Quit the app. Occasionally, Photoshop (CS5) would also unexpected quit. Went 'round and round with that - the crash reports always seemed to mentioned Suitcase (a font management program) so I got rid of that application. Photoshop is more stable but Quark still chokes every time.
    Next I noticed a huge system degradation whenever Time Machine was doing a backup. I use it wirelessly due to the location of the Time Capsule relative to my computers. Specifically, applications would slow down so much that they often froze. I opened an Apple discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3624170 on that and received helpful advice. In that process, I reinstalled system software via the Combo Update.
    When I was able to diagose the Time Capsule hardware, found there to be a problem which was repair via Disk Utility.
    HOWEVER - even after all of these things, I'm still experiencing applications hanging up / freezing entirely ... often, still, while Time Machine is backing up, but not always ... if I must Force Quit applications, it often leads to the Finder getting hung up as well and if I choose "Restart" everyone on my desktop disappears except the wallpaper then the system just sits there.
    Can't tell you how often I've had to shut off the CPU using the button on the front. Hate doing that but I don't have much choice at that point.
    So there's my sorry tale. If you can make sense out of any of it, I would be eternally grateful.

  • How to get rid of files on time machine that no longer exist

    I replaced my computer several months ago when my old one died. A large amount of data which was in a partition on my old computer is still on my time machine and is taking up a lot of space and forcing time machine to delete backups much sooner than I would like. I don't know how to get rid of it. If I try to delete that folder from an individual backup, I get the message, "The operation can't be completed because backup items can't be modified." Of course, I can't delete it from my new computer because it's not there! Any help appreciated.
    Marion

    The best method is to archive the contents of the TC to a disk.. archive is available via the airport utility.
    Simply plug in a USB drive large enough to store all the material presently on the TC, 1TB or 2TB or 3TB.. whichever model it is.
    Archive I have drawn red box around.
    Once the archive has completed ..
    Use the Erase disk.. just the Quick erase is ok.. takes a couple of min and then you have a nice empty drive to start loading TM backups on.

  • How do I get rid of files that only show up on my iPod, but not on my computer when connected? These files appeared after I reconnected my iPod to my computer, and appear to be music files linked to a website.

    I purchased an album on itunes and everything was fine. Then when I reconnected my ipod and it did some autosync (which I have it set up to do manual sync) it added every single song a second time, but apparently they are some sort of internet file, that will only play when I have internet connection. These files won't show up through my computer at all and I can't figure out a way to delete them directly from my ipod either. It's incredibly annoying as when I try to listen the album it plays through two songs, then automatically quits playing when it gets to these phantom files...

    This is not an itunes question at all.

  • Can't get rid of file in Trash

    I know that others have posted similar problems about the Trash not emptying, but this one seems peculiar (to me, that is).
    I dump a file into the Trash, so that it is the only file in there. I 'Empty Trash', as per usual.
    The original file is no longer visible in the Trash, as expected, but there is still a file there. It is zero KB in size, and is described as an alias. This I get from looking at the Trash contents in list(?) view. When I either click on 'More Info' or drag the file from the trash onto the Desktop, it simply disappears.
    It looks weird, as you can see
    The stuff underneath the icon is a jumble of what look like coloured pixels, with no discernable letters visible.
    This behaviour has just started, and because it is so odd I'm concerned to rectify it.
    Any ideas?
    Message was edited by: Rod Fryer

    Hi JS. I have tried 'Secure Empty Trash', but it doesn't seem to work. The 'doesn't seem' might sound indecisive, but here's what happens:
    A small window with the blue Aqua progress bar appears, as if there were a large amount to delete. It mentions 'Items to delete: 5', then after a short pause the window closes. I haven't seen 5 items in the Trash so far when confronted with this problem, only the one. The Trash itself still displays as 'Trash full'. It still has only the one item in it.
    When I look at the Trash contents in column view, and highlight the offending item, it's simply described as an Alias, Zero KB on disk. When I click on the More info ... button the Trash empties, the icon disappears. If I then subsequently put anything in the Trash, and empty it, the weird icon reappears. Another way of making it disappear is to drag it out of the Trash onto the Desktop.
    I realise that maybe I should have used the word file instead of icon in the above.
    As Kappy suggests, it seems to be a Windows relic surfacing in the Mac OS. I'm now wondering if it's anything to do with Fusion as well. I do have Fusion installed and do use it.
    I'm lost with all this at present.

  • How do I get rid of file folder with question mark at startup?

    Following a force quit, at startup I get, first the startup audio followed by a profile of a file folder with a question mark on it.

    That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
    Put your install DVD into the optical drive and reboot. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option key until the Install Disk shows up). That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
    When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Just press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
    If it is then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions.
    If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

  • Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext - Getting rid of file association?

    Hey everyone, new to the OS X operation system -
    Long story short: I got curious about reading the little poem Apple developers put in the .kext, and I figured it was the file equivalent to Windows where you would open a '.nfo' file with notepad (or text editor of choice) to view the hidden message inside.
    Now being as unlucky and new to how OS X works, my guess was wrong.
    Now I guess OS X has put a file association thing, because the icon of the 'Dont Steal Mac OS X.kext' went from the lego brick, to a blue folder icon.
    How would I go about putting it back the way it was?
    Thanks!
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   I only wanted to see the poem for myself ;_;

    First, select the item and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Be sure the filename has not been changed (the extension should be .kext). Also check that the permissions are correct:
    Owner = system with Read/Write privileges
    Group = wheel with Read-Only privieges
    Other = Read-Only privileges
    Now select any other extension and open a Get Info window on it. Click on the icon in the upper left of the Get Info window then press COMMAND-C to copy. Click on the icon in the changed extension and press COMMAND-V to paste.
    This may or may not succeed because of access restrictions. However, as long as the permissions and extension of the file are unchanged (.kext) there should be no impact on your system.
