Getting rid of network items in the finder window

For the life of me I can't find any info on this, so here goes. In my finder window on the side bar, I have a category called shared. When I expand it lists an item named All..... When I click on All.... it displays in the main icon window what appear to be network connections for two websites, rentals.com and some microsoft maps platform website. When I try to drag them to the trash it gives me a message saying they can't be deleted. How do I get rid of them?

In the finder window sidebar there is an entry called "Untitled CD", with the burn icon next to it.  How do I get rid of it?  Using v10.6.8, on an iMac.

  • Why can't I move items in the finder window

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
    ls -@Odeln Desktop; ls -@Oeln "$_"
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If any personal information appears in the output, edit before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • Network drives in the finder window

In the sidebar of any finder window under the "Shared" area that list the volumes that my laptop can access. Can someone please explain why I can see my network drives as servers with IP address and as sharepoints with the name that I've given the drives? Example:
    192.168.1.22
    Bkupstarbase
These two items are the same unit. Up until recently I was also able to see my Maxtor drive the same way (as IP address and as its name, Starfleet). Now I only get Starfleet and I can not get it to mount as an IP address. For awhile I was getting lots of errors saying that the drive could not mount, and I would get "Starfleet" but not the IP address. I removed the Quickstart SW from my computer and that seems to have stopped the errors (and maybe the IP address too?). Seem I can access the unit with out problems but I'm wonder why OS10.5 is doing this new way of seeing the drives. Anyone that can help me understand, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Also, how does one get pictures into these messages? I've copied some things with grab but I can't figure out how to get them in here. Thanks

I think Finder thinks that anything in the Sidebar is mounted. A Dock icon or alias might work.

  • How to get rid of username lists in the Gmail window. I access Gmail with Firefox.

It is a small but annoying problem. I, and sometimes friends, use my Gmail account to check their email. In the username window of Gmail, which I access with Firefox 3.6.9, a list of all past users shows up when I click in the window. I cleared Google cookies, and All history, but the list remains! I can hide the list, but not clear it, if I check 'Form and search history'. But the list is alive and well when I uncheck this option! Is there a way to get rid of the list?

I think you may have Voice Over (accidentally) turned on in the Seeing part of Universal Access Preferences. If so, you can turn it off there, or you can toggle it on/off with command-F5. (In this key combination the former is the "apple key" and the latter is the function key.)

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR..; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_; chmod -R -N ~ $_; } 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if it frightens you, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password dialog will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
In the dialog, select the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if it's not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if it's not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

how can I get rid of multiple pictures at the same time?

Adobe Bridge, lightroom and your file browser (windows explorer or Mac Finder) can select multiple pictures at once and then delete. If you are looking for more than that for information, you will need to be more specific at what your doing, what OS you have, and version of software your using. If necessary post screen shots so we can see what your doing. The more information we have the more detailed of an explaination can can give back to you.

  • How to hide a network volume on the finder.

We use a java application to manage advertising.
This application must reach a smb network volume to access to
the files. On the other hand we do not want that the users can access to
this network volume (to see this network volume on the finder).
It is possible to hide a network volume on the finder.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for the help.

Finder -> Preferences -> General -> Show these items on the desktop and uncheck the 'Connected Servers' option.
Alternatively, if you want to leave other servers showing, you can manually mount the volume at any other point, bypassing the /Volumes directory:
    mount smb://server/sharename /some/other/mount
This should mount the share at the path /some/other/mount rather than at the default /Volumes/sharename

I want to permanently get rid of unwanted apps in the store so my iPad won't reload them when I sinc. Can I do this?

You can't permanently delete any items from your purchase history, all you can do is hide them from the Purchased links so that they don't show for redownloading, as described on the page that you posted from. If they are being synced back to your iPad then you must still have them on your computer's iTunes library - you can select them in the Apps part of your computer's iTunes library and delete them from there (and delete them from your iPad so that they aren't copied back to your computer when you next sync), that will stop being synced back to your iPad.

I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?
    Is your data backed up?

I can see the Application folder in the Finder window but can't seem to get it back on to my dock.
Any help would be appreciated it!

Close all windows and quit all applications.
Launch Finder by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock.
Right click the "Application" folder and select "Get Info".
At the bottom of the resulting window there will be a blue folder icon in the preview section.
Drag the whole window to the right side of the desktop, closer to the Dock.
Now drag the blue preview folder to the Dock right of the separator line.
Right click the folder icon and select "Folder" under "Display as" if it is not shown as folder.
    Best.
