Getting rid of Norton.  For good!

I put Norton Antivirus on my Mac Pro about a year ago. I quickly realized its uselessness and removed it. I have recently upgraded to Leopard and there are still options for Norton when I right click! How do I get this to go away? Spotlight shows nothing when I search for any hint of the program.

Go to the Symantec web site, and under support for Norton Antivirus for Macintosh do a search for "uninstall". They have an uninstaller you can download and run which seems to work.

When I close Firefox, there are two underlying windows that I have to close every time. How do I get rid of them for good and prevent this from continuing to happen. Both windows were opened by me during viewing at some point, so they did originate from me.
Thanks for any help you can give me!

  • There are several login keychain items I'd like to get rid of. I've deleted them but they come back after several hours. How can I get rid of them for good

There are several login keychain items I'd like to get rid of. I've deleted them but they come back after several hours. How can I get rid of them for good.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select
              Change Settings for Keychain "login"
In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
    If the box marked
              Keep login keychain unlocked
    is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • Yahoo installed a Yahoo tab in my Firefox toolbar that I DO NOT want there- how do I get rid of it for good?

Yahoo took over my Firefox- help!
About two weeks ago for some unknown reason Yahool basically took over my Firefox. All of a sudden it was my preferred search engine, Yahoo! TAB shows up in my toolbar (can't remove it) and in general it's been doing some goofy things. I swear I didn't give out any permission for this, but I hate it and it's driving me crazy (actually temp swithched back to Explorer). Tried uninstall and reinstall, but it's still there. Read somewhere that Yahoo hides it's files in hard to figure out places so it can't be deleted. Can anybody help me figure out how to get rid of Yahoo? (ESPECIALLY THE TOOLBAR TAB AT THE TOP) Many thanks!

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • I have an add on that keeps popping up called object browser. I have removed it several times but it keeps coming back. Any way to get rid of it for good?

I keep trying to remove it but it keeps coming back.

That's a potentially unwanted program. You can get rid of it by simply uninstalling the program, or using an anti-malware if all else fails.
First of all, try uninstalling the Object Browser program.
'''To uninstall the Object Browser program...'''
#Press the Windows Key+C simultaneously on your keyboard to bring up the Charms bar.
    #Search for ''Programs and Features''.
#Click the ''Programs and Features'' search result.
#In ''Programs and Features'', find ''Object Browser'' and uninstall it from your computer.
#After uninstalling the program completely (and restarting your computer if you had to in order to complete the uninstallation), open Firefox, go to your Add-ons page, and remove the ''Object Browser'' add-on.
If that didn't solve your problem, try some anti-malwares.
    '''To scan for Object Browser...'''
    '''''ADW Cleaner'''''
#Download ADW Cleaner from its [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ website].
#Open the downloaded file to start ADW Cleaner.
#Scan for malware using the program.
    #Clean any infections.
    '''''Malwarebytes'''''
#Download Malwarebytes from [http://malwarebytes.org this link].
#Open the downloaded file to install the program.
#Upon completion of installation, run the program and scan for malware.
    #Remove any detected threats.

  • My old Apple ID pops up on 2/7 devices. How do I get rid of it for good!?!? This has been occurring since we bought our iphone 5 and 5c.

After I bought my Iphone 5, 5s, &amp; 5c all at different times. I go to update apps and it will show my old Apple ID. We have gone into all the settings and have removed the if from everywhere I can think of. Any suggestions.

    - Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
    - To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account.
thus, it appears that you have apps the need updates that were purchased for at least two different accounts.

  • I couldn't delete this video after I changed the media type. After I manually went in, it's become really strange. How could I get rid of it for good?

I changed the media kind of a music video on my ipod to a podcast. Suddenly, I couldn't find it listed... It was still on my ipod, but wasn't on the music or podcast lists on itunes. I eventually got into my ipod, found the hidden folder it was in, and deleted it. It's still there in the podcasts section, though, except now it won't even play when I try and play it. I'd be really thrilled if someone could offer me some advice on what to do here, thanks..

Hi wrtlinksys-user, you can try to do a funny reset on the router. To do it, just press and hold the reset button on the device for 30 seconds and when you reach 20 seconds while counting, simply unplug and replug the power adapter of the router. Update us if this will help you.

  • How do I get rid of Norton Icons in my system preferences?

I'm having problems getting rid of Norton on my new MacBook Pro. I foolishly transferred applications from my old G4 with Migration assistant and it transferred my old Norton Internet Security which dates from 2003-2004. I deleted everything I could find, but my computer is still running slow and I get messages when I boot up that the various Norton programs can't open and I should reintall them. The Symantec uninstaller tool can't find any Norton applications on my computer and when I search the hard drive for Norton or Symantec I find nothing. Still, there are two icons on my System Preferences panel, and I'm wondering if I manage to remove these, it will get rid of the last wisps of Norton. Any ideas?

Since it is a new machine, if I were you, I would do a full "Erase and Install" and start over.
BTW, you should really be in a 10.5 or MacBook Pro forum.
    Good Luck.
    Joe

Please for the love of GAWD somebody help me .. i dont want to have to do a complete system re intall!

You wrote this!.. DUDE. it worked FLAWLESSLY!.. I've been trying to get rid of it for a very long time and have had NO luck. I will admit to being a bit scared when it would tag files that seemed like nothing to do with Norton at first.. but I let it do its thing and after a few clicks and a reboot, I was completely free of the Evilness that was Norton..
Tonight i will be performing the Exorcisms of Norton form my Mac mini.
I cant tell you how nice it is to plug in or download something and NOT have that horrific useless scan come up!
Must say it was all so easy too with the instructions provided.. I usualy wont mess with the terminal or scrips (im an artist/weightlifter, not a programer) but the way it was layed out i had NO issues!.. just one moment of holding my breath during the reboot XD
Thank you,, a million times thank you!

  • I cannot get rid of yahoo for search no matter what I;ve tried

    I am running windows 7 - FF 14.0.1
I cannot get rid of yahoo for search in search bar and resets to yahoo in search engines pres -no matter what I've tried - I had a YTD youtube downloader addon - i removed it -
    I change
    about:config
    url to
    http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
when i check again - the damn yahoo is back
    i try to change
    browser.search.param.yahoo-fr;chr-greentree_ff&ilc=12&type=937811
the system won't let me.change or remove
Do i have to do a TOTAL deinstall and reinstall of FF?
I like FF but if this continues I will have to change to another browser - I've done software since 1978.

    I had to --->
    Help > Troubleshoot
    about:support
Reset Firefox to its default state
If you're having major problems which you can't resolve, start fresh with only your essential information.
then I got my themes addons etc
everything seems to work - but what a pain - I hate yahoo and its spawn babylon - all that add it without permission should be sued for the time effort and aggravation
that they cause - I am tempted to start a boycott!

  • I can't get rid of thanks for updating firefox or add-ons at start-up

Every time I start Firefox, in addition to my home page, I get "thanks for updating" pages from Mozilla, Colorful Tabs, No Script, and Undo Closed Tabs Button. I have tried all of the usual methods for getting rid of them (resetting home page, et al) and nothing works short of removing the add-ons (and that doesn't work for the Mozilla page!). It's not only annoying but it significantly slows Firefox down.
I love Firefox and have been using since its early days and I don't want to stop now but this inability to control it is frustrating and, frankly, disappointing. I do hope the trend to become more like other browsers does not gain speed; for many users, the very fact that Firefox was not like the others is what drew us to it in the first place.
I'd appreciate any help to solve my dilemma.

hello, this might happen when firefox is not able to properly save preferences in its profile folder. please try this: Click the ''menu ''button and then click ''help (?) > troubleshooting information > profile folder - "show folder"''. then a new window will open up. in this window look out for a file named '''user.js''' (it might be used to overwrite your custom settings). in case it is present , delete or rename this file and restart firefox afterwards.
for more information and other steps please also see: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]]

  • I can't get rid of firmware for WRT54RS flashed on WRT54GL router

Today I tried (unsuccesfull) to reset my router back to factory default.
Unfortunately I found that the IP address did not reset to factory default.
But I still can ping the device.
So I checked the firmware by logging into the device.
B.t.w the admin account credentials changed back to factory default.
First I checked the model of the router and compared that with the firmware within the device.
Then I found the mismatch, the device specs say it's a WRT54GL and the installed firmware says it's WRT54GS.
This seem to be some custom made firmware of some kind.
In the administration section, I found that the firmware update tab is missing.
I then googled for some methods trying to flash the device with the appropriate firmware.
At first I tried the 30/30/30 reset procedure, after reboot still the same settings, so no luck here.
Next I tried tftp with the appropriate firmware version.
After specifying the location of firmware, entering the device password (which happen to be the default due to earlier reset), I then hit the start button.
Some leds start to flicker, then after about 20 seconds the error text occur "unable to get a response from the server".
So I can't get rid of this mismatch firmware here.
    What do I do next?
    How about jtag?
Assumption is the cause of all misery

Hi wrtlinksys-user, you can try to do a funny reset on the router. To do it, just press and hold the reset button on the device for 30 seconds and when you reach 20 seconds while counting, simply unplug and replug the power adapter of the router. Update us if this will help you.
