Getting rid of Norton

Hi,
A friend made the mistake of installing Norton anti-virus software on her 10.5.8 Intel iMac. I deleted the application. Searches in the finder and spotlight for "Norton" yield no result.
Yet, she keeps getting Norton warning messages which we have to keep dismissing. Have I missed something I need to delete or alter related to Norton still in the computer?
Many thanks,
Neil

You need no knowledge of AppleScript. You should find the instructions in the link I gave you very simple to follow. In your Applications folder you should see a folder called “AppleScript”. In it you should see the app “Script Editor”. Double click it and Script Editor will open on your screen. It isn't scary -- it's basically just a large panel into which you put some text ("code"). In this case I have written the code for you and you don't have to understand any of it!
In the link I gave you select all the green text and copy it to your clipboard (Command-C). Click in the Script Editor panel and paste (Command-V). Click the “Compile” button. The text you pasted should change into a variety of colors and there should be no error message.
Now click the “Run” button. Fear not -- nothing bad will happen and you will be given clear messages on screen. Your Mac will tell you when the removals have been completed. Re-boot your Mac. In a few minutes time you will have nothing Norton left on your Mac! Hooray!
BTW, there is nothing "untrustworthy" about the Symantec/Norton Uninstallers -- it's just that none of them do a complete job. My script probably will. Give it a go!

  • How do I get rid of Norton Icons in my system preferences?

I'm having problems getting rid of Norton on my new MacBook Pro. I foolishly transferred applications from my old G4 with Migration assistant and it transferred my old Norton Internet Security which dates from 2003-2004. I deleted everything I could find, but my computer is still running slow and I get messages when I boot up that the various Norton programs can't open and I should reintall them. The Symantec uninstaller tool can't find any Norton applications on my computer and when I search the hard drive for Norton or Symantec I find nothing. Still, there are two icons on my System Preferences panel, and I'm wondering if I manage to remove these, it will get rid of the last wisps of Norton. Any ideas?

Since it is a new machine, if I were you, I would do a full "Erase and Install" and start over.
BTW, you should really be in a 10.5 or MacBook Pro forum.
    Good Luck.

So t his is my current system
and in this screen in the booted up system you can see in the uper right hand corner cirled in red the Norton icon
if i download or plug in any fire wire or usb device i get this scan
as you can see in here. Norton is not in the start up
    its NOWERE in the prefs
and this is the version of Norton causing all the problems
Im getting really sick of this program hiding SOMEWHERE on my computer and causing me all types of **** and problems... This thing i so rooted in my workhorse that its a virus itself!
Please for the love of GAWD somebody help me .. i dont want to have to do a complete system re intall!

You wrote this!.. DUDE. it worked FLAWLESSLY!.. I've been trying to get rid of it for a very long time and have had NO luck. I will admit to being a bit scared when it would tag files that seemed like nothing to do with Norton at first.. but I let it do its thing and after a few clicks and a reboot, I was completely free of the Evilness that was Norton..
Tonight i will be performing the Exorcisms of Norton form my Mac mini.
I cant tell you how nice it is to plug in or download something and NOT have that horrific useless scan come up!
Must say it was all so easy too with the instructions provided.. I usualy wont mess with the terminal or scrips (im an artist/weightlifter, not a programer) but the way it was layed out i had NO issues!.. just one moment of holding my breath during the reboot XD

  • How do I get rid of Norton Internet Security?  Migration assistant problem

I have a new MacBook Pro and I used a firewire connection and migration assistant to transfer files. Unfortunately, the assistant transferred all my applications, even the ones I didn't want, like Norton Internet Security, which slowed down my old G4. I deleted all the Norton files, but there are still icons for Norton Auto protect and Norton Quick Menu on my System Preferences menu. I'm afraid they are responsible for the messages I get on booting up saying the system detects Norton but can't open the application. I'm also afraid its the reason that suddenly my new superfast MacPro is less fast. I can't figure out how to delete it from the system preferences - any ideas?

Please let me reassure you. There are NO viruses effecting OSX to date. There was one virus effected OS9 ten years ago, but nothing since. The fear of viruses is a residual effect from using that other OS, which shall remain nameless, but not shameless. The only danger a Mac user faces is, spreading a virus through a network by forwarding junk emails with an infected attachment, not that anybody is that stupid, or are they? If you are using one of the main email providers, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc, all he attachments are scanned automatically as these organizations cannot afford to have viruses in their systems.
In a nutshell: Relax and enjoy the freedom of using a Mac.
Furthermore: Most ex-users of the nameless OS feel the need to run defrag programs on Macs. Unnecessary! Just leave your Mac turned on overnight and it will do it itself.
You may remember the Mac slogan, 'Think Differently'. Well, Macs do!
    Enjoy your clean install.

  • Can't get rid of Norton Utilities alert window

I have successfully installed Leopard to my older G4 PowerPC (Mirrored Drive Doors). I trashed an older Norton Utilities (V.8); but I still get a message window shortly after boot up that states "Norton Utilities has detected a new version of Mac OS X. You may need to update your installed Norton Utilities or Norton SystemWorks components. Consult your system administrator." I've used Spotlight to search the entire hard drive so that I can trash anything related to the Norton program, but no success: each time that I boot up, I get the same message. Other than a minor annoyance (it goes away when I click "OK"), what can I do so that it won't appear in the future?

    Hi stankay-
You definitely want to lose the Norton products.
I believe that if you go to their website you can download an uninstaller program that will remove all of the files.

  • Can't get rid of Norton

Just transferred contents of old Macbook pro to new one, which has the latest version of Snow Leopard. Along with everything came the usual Norton mess (should never have bought it). A search of the new computer reveals no Norton or Symantec files, which I have read is not unusual. I have run Norton's uninstall app. It too finds no files to remove.
At start up I get a series of five identical error messages referring to the Auto-protect not working. OK...I close those five and five more of the same pop up.
I have read a number of postings on this problem but have not read about a solution. Does anyone out there have one?

see this post by Andreas. AFAIK, his script hasn't failed for anybody yet.

  • Getting rid of Norton.  For good!

I put Norton Antivirus on my Mac Pro about a year ago. I quickly realized its uselessness and removed it. I have recently upgraded to Leopard and there are still options for Norton when I right click! How do I get this to go away? Spotlight shows nothing when I search for any hint of the program.

Go to the Symantec web site, and under support for Norton Antivirus for Macintosh do a search for "uninstall". They have an uninstaller you can download and run which seems to work.

  • I keep getting a js/phish virus detdection on my compute how can I get rid of it?

My new windows8 computer came with norton 360 but I did not think it would get rid of virus' for me so I got AVG and now about once a day AVG tells me that I have a Js/phish virus and it says its from norton how do I get rid of norton to stop getting this virus?

It is probably not a good idea to have two sets of anti Virus program. (I am assuming Norton includes AV).
You probably need to check with Norton about removal of software. Security software is not always straight-forward to remove, otherwise it could be ineffective.

  • Can't get rid of $$!!X# Norton Utilities login screen

Ages ago - ages-- I dumped Symantic and Norton Utilities from my work Mac and my laptops. Erased every fine I could find with Norton or Symantec in it. Yet everytime I boot up my mac or laptop, I get a Norton message window (shortly after most of the desktop is loaded) that tells me NORTON UTILITIES HAS DETECTED A CHANGE IN THE OPERATING SYSTEM and some other line about updating my software. Until I hit the OK button, the Mac won't finish loading! NOTE: I have changed macs and laptops since I last had Norton software on either machine. But somehow in the Migration of files from old Mac to new, some secret Norton file has managed to survive the journey. Is there any way to get rid of this? Not sure I can use AppZapper because I have no Norton software on the Macs for AppZapper to work from...........I'd really love to delete this pest! -- david in KC

  • Getting rid of old norton utilities reminders

many versions of MacOS ago I had norton utilities running - I no longer do, but every time I log on I get a message telling me it detects a new version of MACOS and that I should consult my administrator. I want to get rid of all things related to Nortons from my machine, including this last remaining message any suggestions please?

There should be an uninstaller from Norton made to help get rid of
those parts in hidden locations Norton put into the system. And a
few of them may have migrated along as you updated the OS X.
Unless you do an all-new installation from scratch and don't bring
in any of the old user accounts or previous system bits.
You could also get and use a third-party uninstaller to hunt down
Norton parts. Short of a search in the computer using Find, which
may not be good at finding items within the system itself.
    • Uninstallers for Mac (free mac software downloads) CNET:
    http://download.cnet.com/mac/uninstallers/3150-2096_4-0.html
Some of the items may be hiding in .plist files, or in support folders
where the apps hide parts within a system. It is better to use an
uninstaller than randomly hope to find the correct bits & trash them.
I've never used a Norton product in OS X (from 10.0 through 10.5.8)
and don't see a need to do so. I did have some Norton utilities in old
OS 9.2.2 and Before. Some were adequate for routine tasks, then.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I can't get rid of browser malware?

Okay, so, this is a big problem I've been having all day, and only today. Suddenly, as I was browsing, I started getting ads. I thought it was because my adblocker was disabled. I re-enabled it, and suddenly, I still have ads. So I thought, hey, maybe it just isn't working, so I restarted Firefox (to be clear, this happens in Chrome, as well). Still there.
I get ads on websites that have never had ads before. These ads aren't on every website. Random keywords will highlight, and if you hover, they bring up ads. I also have, suddenly, a bar underneath my bookmarks bar that says "Search on Bing". Sometimes, when I click links, I get redirected, kind of like an adfly link is, and I can click forwards to my link via an arrow in the upper right hand corner. As you can imagine, these problems are terribly annoying.
The problem comes when I explain what I've done so far:
-I've checked my programs, nothing suspicious.
    -No new, unwanted extensions.
-I've run Norton, Malwarebytes, and Adwcleaner, all of which detected things and removed them.
-I can't find anything in the registry that shows up as an issue.
-I've cleared out all of my files several times.
-I haven't downloaded much, recently. The problem started today. The only thing I downloaded was an update to a game, Cubic Castles, from http://cubiccastles.com (I have not tried uninstalling this, as it is supposedly a safe file; my friends and I have /all/ downloaded this file at the exact same time, I'm the only person with issues)
-I've got nothing going on in BitTorrent, and I've cleared out any unnecessary files sitting around on my desktop and such.
-I've reset FireFox, not Chrome. It doesn't sound like a browser problem.
-I believe that when I signed back into FireFox, is when it happened again, as I /did/ reset everything, I cleared the registry. It seemed clean, and then it popped back up again. I'm not sure if syncing my information is what triggered it.
This has to be the most frustrating thing to happen to me. Oh, and I might have you know that when I ran SpyHunter 4, which you apparently have to pay for, I had 1852 threats. Which I've hopefully removed. However, I saw /nothing/ about OffersWizard, and I haven't seen anything on my computer about it except on the ads that have shown up. I'm desperate here. It's making it impossible to use the web, and I'm paranoid it's going to receive my information and hack my accounts; I've had this happen on several occasions.
Is there any other way to get rid of this thing? Should I try a restore point? I'm at the end of my rope, and I can't take this any longer. Please, help me!

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
