Getting rid of old users' fingerprints

I bought my G4 dual 450s (OS 10.3.9) used from a business. I was told recently that whatever the users viewed or websites they visited (Browser histories, Web Caches, images, webpages, etc) will be stored on the harddrive! I was also told that one of them might be able to gain access to my computer via the internet. How can I get rid of their fingerprints, How can I clean the hardrive totally?!
Also, since I have 2 hardrives, would I need to clean the main hardrive or both?
Thanks-i appreciate the help

Hi, Toonist!
Erasing the drive(s) assumes that you did get the install disks when you purchased the Macs. if not, post back and let us know before erasing the drive or drives.
When you erase a drive, what gets erased is the drive's directory data and not the actual data files that are on the drive. A new directory is placed on the drive and the data files eventually get overwritten as the drive is used. If you want to completely eliminate whatever files are on a drive, use Disk Utility's option to overwrite zeroes to the drive when you erase it. This has the added benefit of mapping out any bad blocks which may be on the drive, which precludes their future use. (A bad block is a physical defect. When the drive attempts to write data to a bad block, it ends up causing data corruption.) It takes up to an hour per each 10GB to do the overwrite (most often far less time), but I'd recommend it for you on the newly acquired Macs.
If your second hard drive was acquired used from the seller, wipe that one, too. If you installed it and haven't transferred files to it from the original drive, you might want to do the zeroes overwrite to check for and map out any bad blocks that may be there, if you haven't previously done so. You shouldn't have to worry about any of the previous owner's data "migrating" there, though, unless you put it there by copying or moving it over.

  • LG Cosmos Touch - Transferred phone, but can't get rid of old user's Backup Assistant

Hello!  I'm trying to transfer one of my phones (an LG Cosmos Touch)  to someone else (on my account), but I can't get the old user's  Backup Assistant information removed.  I've tried removing the app so I can download a new copy; it tells me it's removed, but it's still on the list.  I've tried syncing the new user's contact list to the phone from the computer, but the phone tells me the number's changed, and if I try running Backup Assistant it still tries to contact the account for the OLD number, not the new.  I just reloaded the address book by hand (since there weren't too many numbers yet), but I'd LIKE to be able to run Backup Assistant for the new user of the phone, whom I'm sure will be adding additional contacts.  How can I do this if I can't replace the app?  Thanks for any help you can provide.

On most devices where you can't remove Backup Assistant, you can do the following to get rid of it.
    1) Open up Backup Assistant.
    2) Press on help (may be under options).
    3) From the help screen type in *73738#.
    4) This will remove Backup Assistant and you can just reconfigure it altogether.
I hope this helps someone who is in the same predicament.  NO need to master reset the phone to get rid of Backup Assistant. Woohoo!
Any questions, please let us know!

  • Cant get rid of old Apple ID

I am trying to get my iCloud set up on a macbook air (2012) as I am about to upgrade my phone to a 6 and want to make sure everything will sync correctly. I have updated to OS X Yosemite and that is all working fine as far as I can see.
I keep getting popup boxes on my screen saying "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with [my old email address]. Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem " This refers to 2 old apple ID's I had (as I changed emails I thought I had updated them on the system but for some reason my computer is still registering the old ones not the current one). When I click on 'open iCloud preferences' I am not able to deselect the incorrect apple ID and put in the current one. There is only a prompt for a password that I don't know anymore.
It is worth pointing out that this is not a problem from the updating to Yosemite as was happening before I updated.
I have registered an iCloud account for my new Apple ID and this seems to be fine I just can't seem to get rid of the old one or these pop ups. I have read that you cannot merge ID's or get rid of old ones permanently.
My main worry is that in deleting the old Apple ID's I may loose music that I bought with those old ID's.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

    Hi,
I read the links you provided and this hasn't helped. I have already updated my Apple ID to my current email address and can log in no problem.
My problem is that I keep getting pop ups on my screen "This Mac can't connect to iCloud because of a problem with [my old email address]. Open iCloud preferences to fix this problem " This refers to 2 old apple ID's I had prior to the current one.
My questions was not how to amend my details (I can do that) but how do I get rid of this pop up and why is it happening?

  • How can I get rid of old books that I have deleted from my device? It still shows up as purchased books on "Icloud".

How can I get rid of old books that I have deleted from my device but still shows up as "purchased books" on "Icloud". I don't want to see some of these books at all. I can sort by one that are PDFs and ones currently on device, but it still gives option to show those old titles. Does anyone know how to erase your "Icloud" history, please?

Nooooooo! lol... If I want to download again I will, I don't want an electronic trail. Plus when I have Ibooks open, sometimes I will accidently hit the item and it will immediatly try to download it. The problem with that is that its "Time magazines Best Photos of 2012" etc and it locks up my IPAD cuz of sheer size of the book. So I would like it gone from the history. Isn't there a way to clear the history?

  • HT1420 need to get rid of old expired apple accounts before I can purchase new stuff

i need to get rid of old expired apple accounts from previous email addresses.  how to do that?

Why would you keep creating new accounts?
Just change the e-mail address associated with the account.
Having more than one account will generally cause problems.
All purchases are always tied to the account from which they were purchased.

Also, you need to have activated the computer for use with itunes. Why that's not done when you install is a mystery.
Because you don't need an iTunes account tio use or install iTunes.
You cannot authorize the computer until you have an account because that's what you are authorizing.
Note, you can only have 5 active computers, but you can deactivate all of them.
You can have 5 computers authorized at any one time. You can only select Deauthorize all when you do hae 5 authorized and you can only do it one time per year.
    Next, create/update your itunes account.
Again you cannot "activate" (which is authorize) unless you have an iTunes account. So you cannot authorize iTunes and then create an iTunes account.

  • Set up new apple ID on Mac Air, unit still can't access photos, some email, comes up with old apple id, needs password (which i don't know) just want to get rid of old apple ID on my MacAir

need to get rid of old apple ID, don't know password, already set new id and password on MacAir, but i am unable to access some photos, etc

In order to change the iCloud ID on your device you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.  If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, go to https//appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Tap edit next to the primary email account, tap Edit, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https//appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • How to get rid of old documents and emails?

    hi,
how do i get rid of old documents and emails from my computer? i know they are there because when i type something in my search bar, i get documents and emails i got years ago. what do i do to get rid of these things?
    thank you,
    yellow_lamp
what i meant to say, if i didn't say it clear enough, was how do i get rid of old documents and emails that are not currently in my document folder or in my email inbox.

Select the email/s you want to get rid of and then select delete. When all the emails are deleted, select your Trash mailbox, select all the emails and then select delete.
Documents you can drag to the trash (lower right side of Dock). Then empty the trash.
Then stop down to your local bookstore and get some books on Mac OS X.

  • My iTunes told me I need to uninstall mobile device support and iTunes. I did. The tried to reinstall iTunes and told me my computer cannot get rid of old iTunes. Help!

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Getting rid of old addresses...

How do I get rid of old email addresses that popup when starting to type a name in the address line. Every time one of these old addresses pops up, it's from the "auto complete" feature even though the address is no longer in my Contacts List.

Wow, that works great. The list looks like it has everyone I've ever emailed for the past 2 years. I guess the only ones I really care about deleting are people I regularly email that have changed their addresses from whatever to whatever.
    Thanks for the tip!!!

Whatever you do, do not delete TM backups via the Finder. Not only will it take forever, but you can choke your Mac to the point where it, and your TM drive, are unusable. Use the TM interface, as V.K. detailed. It's quite tedious and time-consuming, but won't harm anything.
If you want space for other data, besides TM backups, in the same partition, that can be done, but it isn't a good idea. TM works best with it's own, exclusive partition.
There are two reasons for this: first, as you probably know, TM is a bit like the Borg -- it will assimilate all the space available. So once you put other data there, TM will eventually fill the remaining space, and you can't put anything else there.
Second, if you ever want or need to delete all your TM backups and start over, you can just erase the partition if it's exclusively TM's, but if there's other data there, you'll have to copy it somewhere else first.
If that's what you're trying to do, your best bet may be to just erase your TM drive, make two partitions on it (one for TM, one for other data), and let TM start over. Disk Utility can do this quickly and easily -- post back if you need instructions.
