Getting rid of OS X in older iMac

In addition to a Mac Mini, and a clamshell iBook, I was just given an original iMac with 233 processor and 4 gig hard drive. The person who had it before me maxed out the hard drive and I now have only 79 megabites available. Orignially designed for OS 8, This unit has OS X, version 10.2 and is running OS 9.1, NOT 9.2 in "classic" mode. I also cannot get my printer, scanner and cd burner drivers to function in OS X. What I really want to do is go back to OS 9.1. I don't know how to get rid of OS X and the only OS versions of software I have are 0S 8 and )S 9.1 bundled with the iBook. Is there any way I can get rid of the OS X without wiping the entire drive?

First of all, welcome to Apple Discussions!
Theoretically there are two ways to get rid of an OS X installation:
- Deleting all OS X folders manually. It works, yet I wouldn't recommend it. There are a lot of hidden UNIX folders and it's going to be a tedious task to make sure you don't miss anything while maintaining all OS 9 related files.
- Reinstall OS 9. It won't take you too long and gives you the benefit of a clean, custom installation. Obviously though, you'll need an OS 9 installation disk. Ask the previous owner or try ebay.com
Post back in case you want to try the first one and need a list of OS X folders.

How to get rid of installation alert sign on iMac

I have an "Installation Alert" box that I can't get rid of after trying to download a new version of ITunes.
My wife and I share an IMAC however I've exited all programs on both of our login's and tried the suggested accessing of ITunes helper and exiting it both via the red x and the "quit" command at the bottom of the window.

It sounds like there is some process running which is not allowing you to run the installer for iTunes. In order to make sure that this process is not running I would suggest restarting the iMac into Safe Mode, which disables non-essential processes. Follow the directions in this article to do so -

How do I get rid of the "using an older version of Firefox" start page when I am not?

When I start my browser (Firefox 8.0.1) it tells me I have not upgraded, but I have (10) times.

"You are using an older version of firefox, update now". I already have the newest version of firefox but even if i download it again, to 8.0.1, it still says i am using an older version on the start page!!

How to get rid of colour spinning wheel on imac

When I open safari coloured spinning wheel appears and locks up safari, I have to force quit to get out. It also appears briefly when other programmes are opened but doesn't seem to affect them.
What is the cause and how can it be solved ?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

Update notification remains after update installed. How to I get rid of the notification?

I installed the iPhoto update 9.4.1 but the update notification remains. I've checked iPhoto and it is definitely showing that 9.4.1 is installed.

Try deleting the cache, cookies, and preference files associated wtih the App Store then restart your Mac.
Quit the App Store if it's open.
Now open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy/paste:    ~/LIbrary/Caches/com.apple.appstore
Click Go then move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.appstore folder to the Trash.
Type or copy/paste:    ~/Library/Cookies
Click Go then move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Type or copy/paste:    ~/Library/Preferences
Click Go then move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that made a difference ...

Will IOs7 finally get rid of duplicated contacts?

I am trolling though the rumor mill and want to see if anyone can shed some light on this. Since I have gone to the cloud, my contacts have been duplicated up to six times in some instances. I have a lot of contacts and I want to get rid of a lot of older ones that have changed. The only problem is, is that I have about 6K contacts to go through and I just don't have the time.
Is Apple finally going to address this. After all they wrote the software and could easilly write code that could create a data base for use to look at and delete old contacts or even combine 2 if they were duplicated incorrectly.
Just some food for thought.
PS if you know and easy way to get rid of duplicate contacts, please let me know. When I look at my properties of my cloud, I have my local (mac book pro) contacts and I have two clouds.

Can't get rid of an icon on my desktop

I am unable to get rid of an icon on my iMac desktop. I am running OS X 10.2.8. It is a Word document. Every time I try to trash it, I get the following response:
The item “X.doc” is being used by another task right now. (Other tasks include moving, copying, or emptying the Trash.)
Try again when the task is complete.
Well, the task (whatever it is) never seems to be complete. How do I get rid of this sucker?

Here's how Apple says to remove it:
1. Rename the file to "remove.rtf"
2. Open .... /Applications/TextEdit
3. Create a new document, put some text into it and...
3. From the File menu, choose Save As
4. Type: "remove" in the Save As field
5. Select the location where the problem file is located
6. Click Save....Dialog appears... The file already exist. Do you want to replace it?..... Click “Replace”
7. The “remove” file replaces/overwrites the problem file.... so drag “remove” file to the Trash.
• Using the above procedure I used it to delete/remove a file or folder !!!!

Force-empty the trash or Force-delete an item from desktop..
1. Launch Terminal.
2. Type sudo rm -rf <space> (or copy/paste)
2a. You can use sudo rm <space> , but it will not work with a folder.
3. Drag the offending file into the Terminal window. The path to it will appear.
4. Click on Terminal window, press Return and type your administrator password.
5. Press Return.
6. Click on the Desktop or the Trash window and the file will vanish.
Note.. If you attempt the above again within five minutes, steps 4/5 are not required.

Getting Rid of App Store Updates

Help this is driving me mad!!
I ran some updates for some of my apps when promoted too the other day. When I snyc my phone under applications in the iTunes Library it shows a number 3. When I click on it it says 3 updates are available but when I click again says there are no updates.
Does anyone know how tio get rid of this?

The only problem is now InDesign crashes at startup. I have the original disks and serial number (CS3) The error message is "required resources are missing". Same message if I try to uninstall. Any clues as to how to re-install?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
To reset the SMC
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

TS3999 How do I get rid of recurring invitation on iphone and iPad that doesn't appear on iMac. The calendar is in iCloud .

I have a recurring invitation on my iphone and ipad devices that I cannot get rid of. I made it disappear on my imac, I was able to delete it from the google calendar that was syncing also. I dumped the google calendar. Now it appears in the icloud calendar and there is no option to dump it. It goes on recurring every 2 weeks forever. I would like to get rid of it permanently.
How?
