Getting rid of redundant system files

My new MacBookPro appears to have lots of redundant files (compared to my iMac G5), which stem from the fact that OS X was pre-installed. I would like to understand some of these files and want to get rid of them. Hence I ran OmniDiskSweeper.
Total usage: 38 GB, user only 10 GB...
1) Inflated Library I: 3.7 GB of printer stuff. Can I just delete what I do not need? I have an Epson, what do I need Lexmakr driver for?
2) Inflated library 2: 4.6 GB of application support. If I uninstall, let's say, Garageband, would the 2.3 GB of associated files disappear, too?
3) private -> 4.6 GB var -> 4.1 GB vm -> 4.0 GB sleepimage. What the heck is a sleepimage, and why is it 4.0 GB large? In comparison, my iMac does not have such a file. Can this be deleted?
Is there some freeware that weeds out that ballast?
Jurgen

You can delete any printer drivers you don't need.
Deleting the Garageband application will not delete all it's related files. You will need to hunt those down to remove them. Be very careful about what you remove from Applications Support because it may belong to other applications.
The sleepimage file is used to hold the computer's memory when the computer goes into hibernation sleep mode (this occurs if the battery goes dead and the computer is not connected to an AC power supply or if you change the sleep mode to hibernation. It's size is determined by the amount of RAM the computer supports. For the MBP that would be 4 GBs.
Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash. Most applications create preference files which are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space. If you want you can located them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application. In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder. You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder. You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder. Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item. Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder. Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences. Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab. Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.
There are also several shareware utilities that can uninstall applications:
AppZapper
CleanApp
Yank
SuperPop
Uninstaller
Spring Cleaning
Look for them at www.versiontracker.com or www.mackupdate.com.

    Hi,
Am new at this. What security is best for my MacBookPro and iMac? I have had some company asking me to join them to 'clean' and get rid of some unused files. Is this ok, the cost if around $40. I don't mind paying but I am a bit worried they might not be approved by Apple.

I have had some company asking me to join them to 'clean' and get rid of some unused files.
Does this company know you use Mac OS X? If so this is a worrysome trend.
For a couple of years now there have been several scam artists that call you, claiming to be from 'tech support', or your ISP or even Microsoft, reporting that your machine has been idenfitied as being infected and that you need to give them access to your machine to 'clean it up'. In the process of this 'clean up' they thoroughly hose the system by trashing important files and then demand more money in 'recovery fees' to restore the system.
I've laughed in their face whenever they've called me since they have no clue of how to compromise a Mac system, but if they've started to target Mac users then more vigilence is required.

  • How to get rid of old system preferences??

I recently upgraded (using Migration Assistant) from a PPC G5 to a new Mac Pro. I still have the APC "PowerChute" system preference, even though I don't have the PowerChute software (or at least I have nothing with that file name). PowerChute doesn't work on Intel machines, and it's my understanding that all of that functionality is handled by Energy Saver in Snow Leopard.
So how do I get rid of the PowerChute icon in my system preferences??
    Tks!

I assume it's in the bottom line, labelled 'Other" - control-click on it to remove it.

Check the System Preferences again under Accounts. Choose your account and then check the startup items. You've probably got one in there that is looking for an item which no longer exists.

  • How can I get rid of a system dialogue that keeps reappearing?

Ever since the latest system update, when my Apple TV goes into the slideshow mode, a dialogue box keeps popping up. It briefly disappears when the picture changes but I can't get rid of it permanently.  It reads:
"Wirelessly send what's on your ios device or computer to this display using Airplay. To learn more, go to apple.com/airplay. (1) Choose Wi-Network [name of my local Wi-fi network appears] (2) Choose this Apple TV."
I assume that the numbers 1 and 2 are options but no action I take on the Apple TV remote or the Logitech universal remote I use clears the dialogue.
How can I eliminate this dialogue? It really defeats the purpose of the slide show!

Same issue for me. I've updated the Conference Room Mode, but now when I start the slideshow it goes back to the Apple TV Menu? Any advise? Thanks!

  • Performing a mass rename on originals to get rid of backslashes in file names. Worked for most files but failed for some with OSSStatus -43. Can't find any info on error -43. Any ideas?

I'm moving all my managed files to be referenced so I can access from both Aperture and lightroom. Needed to do a rename on 16,000 files to get rid of backslashes in the file names. Most of the time it worked but for 1093 files it gave OSSStatus -43. I've tried googling the error and got nothing. Any ideas where to begin looking?
    Thanks
    Jim

How are you renaming the files? In the "File > Relocate original file" dialog panel? Are you using a custom name format?
Have you checked in Aperture, if the originals, that are giving you the error message, are still inside the Aperture library?

  • How do I get rid of a mystery file-less track playing on my project?

I have a completed song on garageband using about 15 tracks. At some point in the song, for about 6 seconds, there an be heard the remnants of an earlier voice track that is no longer existent. And yet it plays it! And I can't get rid of it. I have gone thru every track and the sounds are not on any existent track. And yet it plays everytime I play (or export) the song. It's like a Garageband ghost. I found somebody else describing the same situation on these forums here, but no solution was offered. How can I get rid of these unwanted sounds?
    Thanks...

On your PC, open up Computer and navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support.  Inside of this folder should be a file called SQLite3.dll.  Copy this file by right->clicking on it and choosing Copy.
Then go back one folder so that you are again in the Apple folder.  Look for the Mobile Device Support folder.  Open it up and paste the file inside of it.

  • Getting Spotlight to Search System Files by Default !??!

9 out of every 10 times I need to use spotlight, it's to find a system file. Usually something involving latex. I know that I can modify a finder search by choosing "other" + "System Files" + "include". But i'd rather just be able to turn that on by default. Is there a command line entry that I will force to spotlight to always search system files?

  • How to get rid of a binary file with firefox that pop up allthe time?

each time that i open moxilla firefox a box asking if I want to save or cancel the binary file. I have tried to ignore ti however it has become a bother. How do I stop the box from popping up ?

    Hi
if you mean http://db.tidbits.com/ - I didn't get any popups in a few minutes of browsing there, this without any blocking software. If you're seeing the very same ad popup window from differing sites, then it'd sure be worth looking at whether or not your mac or router or isp is using some rogue dns server.
    DNS - Domain Name System
it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices worldwide. An often-used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 192.0.32.10.
    to borrow from wiki.
DNS servers can be chosen in your router or in your mac at System Preferences-Network-Advanced-DNS tab, If no special dns servers are selected, your router will usually accept the isp's suggestion, so you'll be using theirs, for better or for worse.
The most common place for any 'rogue' dns to be set, is in System Preferences-Network-Advanced-DNS tab... look there on your mac, and see if any numbers are visible. Copy them & paste here, then we'll know what's going on.

If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
