Getting rid of Windows OS

A few months ago I installed boot camp and then Windows XP but soon removed both from my computer. However, since that whenever I start my computer an icon of a folder with a question mark flashes. Everything else seems to work fine but I'm wondering if anybody knows what this question mark folder is and, if so, how to remove it.
Thanks!
Dan

It sounds like your Mac is still set to boot first from the Windows partition, then when it cannot locate it, boots into the only OS it finds - OS X.
When you say you removed Windows, did you re-run the Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition that Windows was installed on? If not, that is what you need to do.

  • How can I get rid of windows 8.1 in my new lenovo and get windows 7 put in?

    How can I get rid of Windows 8.1 on my new Lenovo laptop and install Windows 7?

    Hi,
    I'll assume your laptop was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1
    1. Start by copying all your personal folders (Documents, Pictures, Music, Videos, Favourites, local databases,
    hosts files, etc) into an external disk, DVD, tape, whatever.
    2. If I were you, I wouldn't use Windows 8.1 backup tool, I'm not sure Windows 7 Restore applet will be able
    to read a Windows 8.1 backup.
    3. Check that you have all the necessary licenses, CDs and executables to reinstall your former Windows 7
    applications, components, browsers, plugins, Java, .NET Frameworks, etc. Be aware that some applications require
    to keep same hostname and/or same IP and/or or same local username (or all of them) as they were on the original
    Windows 7 machine.
    4. Check that you have your Windows 7 CD and license handy.
    5. Do you have a Windows 7 image backup of your laptop (prior to the Windows 8 upgrade)?
    5.a Yes? Then restore that image and restore your personal folders on top. You might need to
    install or reinstall some of the applications I mentioned on #3
    5.b No? You'll have to format your laptop, install Windows 7 from scratch, create your local
    user with administrative rights, install SP1, install necessary updates, reinstall all your
    applications and finally restore your personal folders.

  • Can't Get Rid of Windows XP

    So I have this white macbook running only windows xp. There is no os x on this hard drive. No boot camp and no parallels. Solely runs on xp. I have the original recovery discs for os x tiger and i cant figure out how to get rid of windows and go back to running os x. Can anyone help shed some light please...

    Insert the OS X disk. Reboot the Mac, holding down the Option key. You should see the boot panel, with the option to boot from the install disk. Do so by clicking the arrow under the disk image.
    When booted into the CD, click through the first (language select) screen. Go to the Utilities menu, and choose Disk Utility. Using the Partition tab, repartition the hard drive to 1 partition, Mac OS Extended format. Close DIsk Utility and proceed through the installation on the new partition you've just created.
    Good luck!

    Your index rebuild attempt obviously hit a bug. There is a similar bug for older versions of Oracle when attempting to (re-)build an unique index online and the recursive sql generated for checking the uniqueness is malformed.
    Which version of Oracle is this database?
    Manually manipulating the remaining objects is dangerous and can lead to ORA-600 errors when accessing the base object. If you run into this ORA-600 errors you need to bounce the database instance, that should fix the issue.
    The remaining objects are supposed to be cleaned up by the SMON background process but it can take him a long time in busy systems(up to two days says Oracle). As long as there are ongoing transactions on the object the clean up procedure might not be able to complete and will attempt to re-try depending on Oracle version.
    In more recent releases of Oracle (at least 10.2.0.1 and later) there should be a DBMS_REPAIR package that offers a function ONLINE_INDEX_CLEAN that manually invokes the cleanup procedure that SMON should be doing anyway, but it still may not be able to do the clean up due to concurrent DML activities.
    If DBMS_REPAIR is not available in your database you can check for the installation script in the following location, but in older releases it does not contain the ONLINE_INDEX_CLEAN function. I'm not sure if this is available as backport to previous releases resp. as one-off patch:
    {ORACLE_HOME}/rdbms/admin/dbmsrpr.sql

  • I downloaded firefox 6 and my screen is pluged full of MSN and Bing garbage, do I have to get rid of Windows Live to cure theproblem?

    I'm using a HP PC and I have to go to my iMac to try to get the solution as to why my Firefox screen on my PC is full of MSN garbage. All I want is a standard opening page with google search box in the middle of a basically blank page with one or two lines at the top of the page for control. Now I get nothing but MSN with no searching or bookmarks, it almost looks like Yahoo. I tried to uninstall Windows Live but my computer won't let me, thanks Bil Gates.

  • How do I get rid of Windows

    Im really a noob at this.
    I want to get rid of the Windows partition to free up space but I don't want to lose my applications in OS X because I dont have a lot of the install discs anymore. What Do I need to do to be able to take advantage of the space that Windows is controlling on my hard disk? Thanks

    From your profile it appears that you are using Tiger as your operating system. You will not be able to run boot camp to merge the windows partition with the Tiger partition since boot camp has expired.
    One work around is to boot up in Tiger and set the date back to some time in November 2007. Then run boot camp. Choose merge partion option and that will erase the windows partition and merge it back to the Tiger's partition without erasing Tiger and its contents.

  • Get rid of Windows 8-- hate it. How do I get Windows 7?

    My laptop came with Windows 8.  It will not install the Windows 8.1 for whatever reason.  Windows 8 SUCKS.  You can't do anything and simple things like "Uninstall program" have been renamed and you have to search it-- with about
    eight different terms to figure out what the heck they decided to rename it. Getting rid of viruses is a nightmare because you can't find the tools you need.
    How do I get windows 7? I don't feel that I should pay to get it when Windows 8 is so terrible that it is junk. It's as bad as Vista was... nightmare.  I feel ripped off with this system but can't get the store to help me.

    I just typed a long paragraph commenting on my experience with Win8, but for some reason my browser decided to close and I was forced to run an update.
    So I'll summarize. I've used a computer since I was 5 years old. I started with a precursor to the 8088 and have used every major system and OS since then.
    The #1 requirement of any OS is that "I" be in control, not the OS.
    This simple little thing was completely overlooked and I find myself for the first time ever, actually hating my Computer.
    If a major rework is not conceived soon, I believe Win8 will take its place in history as the OS that killed the PC.
    I should not have to install third party add-ons and scripts just to perform simple tasks.
    I bought this laptop for work and "I" should be able to choose what parts of the OS are installed.
    Lets start with adding the option to remove all Metro and full screen aps.
    I don't want to reconfigure or uncheck boxes. I literally want these parts of the OS removed and only a basic, slick desktop, work oriented environment.
    No bells - no whistles. I work for a living.

  • How to get rid of Windows files under Parallels

    After loading and running Windows XP via Parallels, I've decided the virus risk is not worth it for me. My question is how do I get rid of all the Windows files? I've uninstalled Parallels using the Parallels uninstall function on the Parallels disk. Is that it or are there Windows XP files somewhere on my hard drive?
    Thanks

    Hi Jason!
    I believe that should be all you need to do but a better place to ask would be the Parallels forums. Have a look here <http://forums.parallels.com/>.

  • Creative Player Connection problems? Get rid of windows Media Player

    I noticed that a lot of people here are having difficulty gettings their computers to recognize the player.
    A lot of people describe that when they plug in their players the player will show up as properly installed in the device manager and windows will recognize it, but it won't show up in Creative media source or any other mp3 player management software.
    Also the install programs for firmware won't detect your creative player as well.
    The trick is to get rid of any and all traces of windows media player .
    Delete the windows media player. Delete the windows media player format in Add/Remove programs in your control panel. Make sure the checkbox the says "show updates" is checked as well in your Add/remove programs window, otherwise windows media player might not show up in your list of programs to remove.
    Then once you have windows media player totally removed, reinstall windows media player 0.
    Then reinstall the latest versions of your Creative software, drivers, firmware, and plug-ins.
    It worked for me and it worked for a lot of other of people.
    I had a Zen Xtra that I could not add music to, or remove music from, for a couple weeks until I figured it out. I couldn't even install the firmware either until I got rid of Windows Media Player .
    Windows Media Player = Useless Creative Mp3 player.

    I do what I can....

  • Cant get rid of windows start up disc

    I was installing windows with Boot Camp but had to go back to create a larger partition. Removed partition with Boot Camp assistant to start over but now when I try to boot up, i just get the black screen asking me to insert windows disc to boot up. If I hold down the alt key, i get the option of starting from the hard disc - how can I remove the Windows start up request - is there a startup disc preference that needs throwing away?
    Thanks
    BB

    is there a startup disc preference that needs throwing away?
    Change the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences. NVRAM settings aren't located in a file and can't be thrown away.

  • Get rid of WIndows ...

    Hi,
    I just got used iMac (my first ) with Windows 7 installed. And looks like HDD is replaced, Win7 shows HDD total size 372GB (spec shows 250GB).
    Wired original keyboard and wired mouse.
    Now I want to restore MacOS on this iMac! Can I do this myself? My only current apple experience was with iPad 2.
    I tried press boot time (after start-music):
         + Command+R => nothing
         + C => nothing
          + Options => nothing
    Every time when I start iMac i get start-sound, white screen (ca 10-20sec), and then windows start-up screen ....
    Is there options to restore mac on this iMac?
    Thanks to all advices.

    Hi,
    I dont have bootcamp program under Windows
    And I dont have any iMac install media too ...
    Is this normal that when I power on iMac it plays only start-up sound and shows white blank screen?
    And not any start-up key combination doesnt work. Or I dont know how to use them. I tried to press combination after start-up sound is played.
    Command-C --> NOTHING
    Option --> NOTHING
    Command-N --> NOTHING
    C --> NOTHING
    (NOTHING = start-up sound->white screen->windows boot screen)
    Is under mac something like BIOS under Intel based PC-s?
    Looks like MAC partition is removed and 100% HDD is available for Windows.
    Thanx

  • Can I install mac on a new hard drive in my windows computer and get rid of windows completely?

    I have a windows desktop computer. Can I install a new hard drive and install ios mavericks on it? In other words, convert my windows desktop to a mac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You may be able if your computer meets some requirements and if you don't mind putting your PC in risk, but it's not legal to install OS X on non-Mac computers. See the OS X Terms of Use > http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX109.pdf
