Getting slapd to dump core when installed as a non-root users on linux

Doesn anyone know how to allow slapd do dump core when running on linux(redhat as4) while being installed as a non-root user?
I have tried the normal route of setting core to unlimited and that user to unlimited also in limits.conf.
I can do a kill -11 $pid with an instance running as root to get a core but no luck with an instance as a non-root user.

I forgot to mention that I'm running 6.1.

There is a very long way which is removing anything related to Apple including stuff in the registry.
The short way is as follows. It worked for me.
I have seen that in the forum EXCEPT the registry trick which is missing and does the different.
    1. Remove the Apple account from Outlook.  In my case a me.com account.
    2. Disconnect the connection to ICloud in the control panel of version 3.1.
REBOOT and open Outlook to see that all traces of the email account and of ICloud are gone.
    3. Uninstall ICloud 3.1. I used REVO Uninstaller in Safe way mode. It removed some stuff in the registry from what I see; but not sure.
    4. Delete as much stuff as possible in the C \Program Files (x86) \Common Files \ Apple
and C\Program Files\Common Files \Apple.  My computer is 64 bits.
    5. Go to the registry by typing regedit.exe or simply type regedit in the Start Box. Search for ICloud.  I deleted TWO entries related to ICloud. Otherwise, you will still see the ICloud control panel despite the fact that you removed 3.1.
    6. then I was able to install ICloud 4 immediately.  Upon restarting it asked me my email and password and added itseft to Outlook like it was before. Be aware that you address book in Outlook could be deleted, so do an export before.

  • Process dumps core, when started by SMF - fine when manually started

    Hi.
    h2. Explanation
I compiled [Nagios 3.2.0|http://www.nagios.org/] manually, and created a SMF manifest and method file, based on the [OpenCSW supplied files for Nagios|http://www.opencsw.org/packages/nagios]. The method file is based on [what the Nagios guys supply|http://pastebin.ca/1577792] , but [changed a little|http://pastebin.ca/diff.php?id1=1577792&id2=1577793] .
When I enable the "application/nagios" service, it right away goes into maintenance state. In the /var/svc/log/application-nagios:default.log log file, there's consequently then this:
    + exit 0
    [ Sep 24 13:17:10 Method "start" exited with status 0 ]
[ Sep 24 13:17:11 Stopping because process dumped core. ]
    [ Sep 24 13:17:11 Executing stop method ("/opt/local/nagios-3.2.0/method/nagios stop") ]
    + test -r /lib/svc/share/smf_include.sh
[...]It died, because of "*Stopping because process dumped core.*"
If you have a look at the method file, you'll find that I dump the environment with env to a file. When I login as root and set the environment variables to exactly those values and remove any other additional variables, I can run the method / init script just fine; the nagios process doesn't core dump.
    h2. Question
Why does the process dump core, when it's run by SMF?
Additional questoin:Where's the core dump? I did a "find / -name core" and found nothing. I also changed coreadm:
    --($ ~)-- LC_ALL=C coreadm
global core file pattern: /var/core/core.%f.%pAfter a reboot, there's nothing in /var/core (the directory exists).
    I'm on Solaris 10 5/09 Sparc.
    h2. Files
    *[svccfg export nagios|http://pastebin.ca/1577787]*
    *[Method file /opt/local/nagios-3.2.0/method/nagios|http://pastebin.ca/1577793]*

There's no such directory as "/var/crash":
    --($ ~)-- ls -lad /var/c*
    drwxr-xr-x    4 root     sys             4 Sep 21 14:03 /var/cache
    drwxr-xr-x    2 root     sys             7 Sep 21 13:32 /var/cc-ccr
    drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root            2 Sep 24 13:14 /var/core
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     sys             3 Sep 21 14:03 /var/cronGranted, since when I posted that question and now, I booted the NGZ numerous times. But in a default installation of Solaris 10, that directory isn't removed during shutdown/boot, if it exist. At least it exists on my other servers, even if it is empty (eg. like that, on a different server:
    --($ ~)-- ls -laR /var/crash/
    /var/crash/:
    total 3
    drwxr-xr-x    3 root     root          512 Mai 19  2006 .
    drwxr-xr-x   56 root     sys          1024 Dez  7  2008 ..
    drwxrwx---    2 root     adm           512 Sep 22  2008 winds06
    /var/crash/winds06:
    total 2
    drwxrwx---    2 root     adm           512 Sep 22  2008 .
drwxr-xr-x    3 root     root          512 Mai 19  2006 ..So, I'd say that the coredump has never been stored in /var/crash.
Anyway - isn't /var/crash just used for crashdumps, when the whole machine goes down? According to [man filesystem(5)|http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-5175/filesystem-5?a=view] , it is → "+Default depository for kernel crash dumps.+"
If coredumps aren't in /var/crash, aren't named "core*" and aren't stored in the directory specified by coreadm, where are they?
Converse: If no coredump is created, why does Solaris "speak" about a coredump being created?

I met problem when installing Oracle 8.1.6 on Turbo Linux 7.0.
After setting up environment variables, and successfully

The process of installation blocked at 80% in "Database Creation

I have tried two times and got the same result.
    The error message is:

    Help!

I have done some oracle installations over RedHat 7.0 (not certificated):
    Let's check some things:
1- You must have changed very few parameters on your shm.h sem.h files which are in /usr/include/linux directory.
2- You need to upgrade the glibc and libstdc libraries (.rpm)
3- You must have installed the jre116_v5 on /usr/jre and made a symbolic link like this
    ln -s /usr/jre/jre116_v5 /usr/local/jre
4- You must include in the CLASSPATH parameter the jre116_v5 directory. It should look something like this
    CLASSPATH=/usr/jre/jre116_v5:$ORACLE_HOME/jlib
5- Be sure to create and export all the parameters in your .bash_profile.
6- Run the ./runInstaller.sh in a terminal window inside the Xwindow.
You can find the jre116_v5 in www.backdown.org
I hope these tips help you

  • Install Directory 5.2P4 as non root user.

I want to install Sun Directory Server 5.2 p4 on solaris 9 as non root user?
Is there a supported way of doing this. I dont want any of the files for directory owned by root.
The reason is that there is a very strict access control method implemented in their environment.
    The message i get is
    $ ./setup
arning: You are not logged on as root. Unless you are logged on as root,
information required to upgrade or uninstall this product will not be saved in
the system registry. This will adversely affect future upgrades/reinstalls as
well as the ability to perform a successful uninstallation. Manual cleanup
after uninstallation may be required in certain cases.
    Press Enter.

If you just want as said:
I dont want any of the files for directory owned by root.then its possible with DS5.2 P4 on solaris:
    1. become root user and start setup to install the DS5.2P4 software.
    2. When the setup application asks for server uid /server group id, give the non-root userid and group.
When the setup is finished ns-slapd process is started automatically. The only problem is that you have to be root user to re-start the ns-slapd daemon from the command shell. But the files are owned by the non-root user always as you required.
However this will not work if you want to restart the DS from the java GUI console. (however there is a workaround to do this).

  • Installing agent as a non-root user?

Trying to install OEM agent on Solaris, from the OMS server, I get the following error when setting up the SSH Named Credentials.
"The agent installation cannot be performed as a root user. Ensure the user name in the Named Credential is set to a non-root user."
Does that mean I have to go around to all of my clients and create a special user just to run the OEM agent?
What are other people doing for this?

Well, we have thousands of servers and only a couple that have Oracle on them.
I went ahead and created an "oemagent" user, in group dba.
Then I gave it ALL permissions in sudoers.
I then had to run some SSH script on the OMS server that set up SSH configuration variables to talk to the client.
Then created an agent deployment directory (since you have to give it an empty directory to install to).
Then created an oraInventory directory and made the owner "oemagent" and group owner "dba".
Then I was able to deploy.
So it seems that, in order to deploy an agent to maintain a configuration on my clients...I have to write a script that will initialize the client first. So much for OEM taking care of all the provisioning/management!

  • Getting file descriptor counts as a non-root user

I have a number of scripts running on Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 systems that currently run as root in order to read file descriptor counts from various processes. currently they do something like: ls /proc/$PID/fd | wc -l to get a count of file descriptors for a given process $PID.
These scripts need to be migrated to run as a non-root user. This means that my method for obtaining file descriptors will only work if the script owner and process owner are the same - this is not always the case however.
For Solaris 10, I can assign the privilege proc_owner to the script owner - this works fine.
    For Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?
    Thanks,
    Nick

    For Solaris 8 I'm stuck.
Does anyone have any idea how I can read a file descriptor count from an
arbitrary process as a non-root user on Solaris 8 ?As I'm sure you suspect there isn't a way to get around the all privileges
or none arrangement in Solaris 8. One workaround option though is the
recently announced Solaris 8 Migration Assistant 1.0 which allows you to
run a Solaris 8 container on Solaris 10 SPARC systems. A good collection
of the relevant links are here:
    http://blogs.sun.com/dp/entry/solaris_8_migration_assistant_1
With this option your Solaris 10 script process with the proc_owner
privilege could also be run against the processes in the Solaris 8
    container.
    Hope this helps.

  • Install Tuxedo (tuxedo10gR3) as a root user in Linux Operating System

    Hi,
Is it mandatory to install Tuxedo (tuxedo10gR3) as a root user in Linux Operating System?
    Thanks
    Soundappan

I saw we need root access as a prerequisites in the installation guid. (I assume we need the root access only to create a owner and group id on the unix system)
    =====================
    Prerequisites
Before you begin to install Oracle Tuxedo, make sure that you have the following resources in place:
    • TCP/IP connectivity (required for PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.50 or higher) between the client machine and
    the application server
    • Approximately 235 MB of free disk space on the application server
    • For UNIX, you must have root access.

  • Xscreensaver fails when non-root user logs in

    Hi,
My system is running Solaris 10 (10/08) with trusted extensions enabled.
The problems I am having is when I login as root, the Screen Lock menu item is enabled and I can lock the screen
However, when I login as a non-root user, the following error message is displayed and the Screen Lock menu item is not available:
There was an error starting up there screensaver.
Failed to execute child process "xscreensaver" (No such file or directory)
Screensaver functionality will not work in this session.
Instructions from around the web say to include /usr/openwin/bin in the PATH env variable in the .profile (or in my case .bashrc) to fix the problem. However, I've tried that without success.
I tried running /usr/openwin/bin/xscreensaver-demo. But the demo indicates that the xscreensaver daemon is not running and when I try to start it (via the demo) the daemon fails to start.
    So, anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Paul W.

DougArthur: Your a champion. Running Sol_10.x86 on a VM virtualbox guest on my laptop a server at home. And well my last place of employment U2 after many login/out operations. I've noticed the exact same issues. I played around with the xscreensaver-demo which only appears to correct the issue "failed to execute child process" No such file or directory. Touched the .xscreensaver
etc. As you have quickly identified. Adding the system directories to the jds files did the trick. Wonder if this will be implemented into the next releases. I've seen this all the way up to U6 for workstation and or console use. Annoyances this wonderful OS has become. As it seems the little things cracking thru. Well done. Sparc versions same issues. Something needing attention
for the devo people to change. Small correction. Double "=" in a path statement might cause a buffer run. Change the PATH statement too PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin:/usr/dt/bin: is syntax I entered 1st crack of fix. Voila she's operating as normal now! Great work.

  • I get an Application Error message when installing TestStand 2.0

When installing TestStand 2.0 on a Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, following message appears when installing Engine: Application Error - The instruction at "0x685876b3" referenced memory at "0x685876b3". The memory could not be read.

    Hello Eduardo,
This is a strange behavior, and I guess I have a couple of comments. TestStand works fine with Windows NT 4.0 but it needs at least Service Pack 3 installed. So make sure you have the SP installed.
In addition, make sure you use an administrator account when you install TestStand. Finally, you can try to install it on a different computer with the same OS just to make sure the CD is OK. If it works in the other computer, then there is something wrong with the original PC.

Here is solution from oracle.support.com: ID 1073417.1
    1. Set the environment variables JAVA_HOME, ANA_VARIANT, ORACLE_HOME and LD_LIBRARY_PATH.
    - ORACLE_HOME set to the ORACLE_HOME for the mid tier installation.
    - JAVA_HOME was set to $ORACLE_HOME/jdk.
    - ANA_VARIANT = Linux.
    2. Copy/Move installation files to the root directory (/ directory). Copy all script, Config, UnixChk.sh to root directory.
    3. Run install with the following syntax, from the JAVA_HOME directory:
    java -Xmx256m -jar setup.jar

  • OpenOffice doesn't allow editing when non-root user [SOLVED]

I've been having this problem for some time now: for example whenever I open swriter to edit a text or make a new one, swriter always closes at the moment I type something. This problem does not exist when I use OO as the root user.

Try removing the .openoffice.org2 folder in your home directory. You'll need to do that as root, if the problem is what I think it is... You see, OOo seems to do some configuration on install, and that's as whatever user installed it - so if you install from Arch's packages, you need to delete the config stuff before you can use it.
(Usually, though, that's manifested as OOo not starting at all, so I'm not sure it's your problem.)
