Getting sound to play through computer during import/selecting to import

HI,
Complete newbie question as I've never done video before...
I plug the camera (Sony DCR- HC48) through Firewire into iMovie '08.
The camera is recognised, the import window opens and I can play the video, choose the bit I want and import it as a clip - cool! No problems there.
The problem is, when I am selecting the video to import the sound plays through the camera and not through the Mac. Ideally I'd like it to play sound through the Mac so I can use headphones while I select video to import. So my question is...
Is there no way to get the sound to play through the Mac as I am selecting the video to import?
Thanks for any help.
Pat

So what would be the "standard" way of working? Would you import the whole DV tape onto the hard drive and then cut it down to size on there or bring in bits from the camera and use the camera's audio to select the chunks you want?

  • Getting audio to play through computer speakers

    Hi
Ive got an external NSTC monitor and im trying to get the sound to match up with the video on it. If i do audio follows video, then the sound comes out of the monitor which sounds like crap because it has bad speakers. If i make the audio come out of my computer speakers, then it is out of sync with the video on the external monitor. i guess i could get a bunch of cords from radio shack and get a splitter and plug the computer and the audio into my computer speakers, but i was wondering if there was a way within final cut to get the audio to play in sync but not through the external monitor's audio.

well i do have good speakers<<</div>
Good speakers and good monitors for editing work usually aren't the same thing. In post work, either video or audio, the audio monitors need to have a flat response; they should not color the sound in any way. That's the only way you know what the true audio will sound like.
Most speakers, including computer speakers do color the sound; some quite a bit, especially in the low end.
Nearfield monitors do provide a flat response and are designed for use in recording studios and edit suites for critical listening. When working in FCP, the ideal setup is to ALWAYS monitor your audio and video through the same path out from the computer, converted to analog and then the video going to an properly calibrated external TV monitor and the audio going to the audio monitors.

  • Can't get sound to play back on Movie Maker when recording with internal webcam/microphone

I have a Windows 8, 64-bit  Envy notebook.   I tried using Google Hangouts but there wasn't any sound (the camera was fine).
Later, I decided to test the  internal microphone myself by  creating a Movie Maker file,  and clicking on Webcam and making a recording.  The camera worked but it played back in total silence.
I checked the settings for the microphone and the internal mic was properly set as the default.  I turned up the volume to the maximum.   Then I found directions for doing a sound check, and I was able to do the Sound Recording check and get audio when I played the file back.
But when I tried again to make a video,  i got zero in the playback.
    Any idea what's going wrong?
    Thanks,
    Pat

    Hello Myerspat,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how you are not able to get sound from your notebook computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
To restore the audio to your notebook, I recommend following this document on No Sound from Speakers (Windows 8). This should help with the playback on your system.
In addition, you can also follow @SuperMario1's thread on Troubleshooting Guide: Audio does not Work after a Certain Period of Time. This guide should help with your notebook's audio output in regards to a recent Windows Update.
For more assistance, I will need to know:
The Product and Model Number of your notebook computer.
If your computer has completed all of its important Windows Updates.

  • FCP audio only plays through computer speaker?

I can not get FCP to play out through my audio interface for some reason. FCP only plays out of my iMac internal speaker. All other computer sounds are coming through the audio interface selected in system preferences (M-164UF Tascam Mixing board) except FCP. What am I doing wrong?

Yup, there it is. I looked in five different places, but forgot to look here. That's the danger of being away from using FCP for a few months. You forget where all the buttons are. Thanks for answering my embarassingly dumb question.

  • How do I get sound to play on my Samsung HDTV from my macbook pro?

I've been trying to figure out how to get sound to play on my TV from my laptop for several days now and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a solution to this. I bought an Mini Display Port to HDMI converter (Kanex Iadapt) off Amazon that is supposed to have audio support. I connected it with the HDMI cable to my TV and changed my display settings to mirror and the picture comes up fine but when I tried to change the output in sound settings to my TV my TV didn't even come up as an option. I went out and bought a Y audio cable figuring my laptop may be older than 2010 and needs an additional cable, plugged the audio cable into the same HDMI outputs in the TV and still no sound. I can't think of anything else!

I have an ancient LG 32" and a Thunderbolt/miniport-HDMI adapter that I bought from monoprice. I go through my Denon receiver through one of the HMDI ports and get sound and video on my TV. This is the one I bought - it carries audio and video and is under $7.
    Could be worth a shot...

  • Can't get sound to play using audio line in

I am trying to play audio from my iPhone by connecting mini plug cable to the headphone jack and the audio line-in mini plug.  The input level indicator in System Preferences > Sound is showing that audio is playing but I don't hear sound.  I do have sound playing through my Mac Pro with iTunes, steaming audio/video, etc., so I know it works.  Any ideas how I can get sound to play audibly using line-in?

Another option not involving any additional software - see:
    http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/87046-play-line-in-through-macbook-pro-in ternal-speakers/
Just came across this problem myself (10.8) and that solution works great - just open Quicktime, there under File: choose a "new audio recording". In the upcoming controller switch up the volume.
Weard that it works this way but nowhere else in the sound System Control panels ...

  • My itunes loses the sound when playing through TV/receiver

My itunes loses the sound when playing through TV/receiver.  It is my 2nd Apple TV,  I have a Mac and PC and I have used 2 different receivers.  Any help?  If I start the music through Apple TV is doesnt skip but then I cant have it playing through computer at the same time.  It amazes me how these littles things arent fixed yet.

I have almost the exact same problem, except that mine is without the iTouch. My itunes is working perfectly - uploading music from CD's, searching for music, syncing with my iPod classic. However when i ask it to play any music it will say that it is playing yet not only will no sound come out but the timer bar will not move either. it is the same with music in the itunes store and happens regardless of what else is happening on my laptop.
i know my sound works fine with all other programs, and i read on another forum that 'repairing' itunes through the control panel fixes it, however this is not the case.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to get audio to play through TV?

  • Can't get Audio to play through when importing using iMovie '09

Anyone know how to get audio to work when importing DV footage into iMovie '09.
It used to work fine in iMovie HD. Any ideas??
    Yours sincerely,
    Anthony
    Irish MacUser & MacAddict

I've just spent a while trying to figure this out ...
I used this feature (monitoring audio on import) all the time in previous versions of iMovie ...
Kind of essential I think ...
Now we have a new 'feature' in iMovie where you can't monitor audio during import.
Wouldn't it be nice if Apple documented this somewhere (maybe on iMovie Help ...).
I understand about hi-speed import from other (non DV) formats ...
So why not just let the user hit the 'mute' button if they don't want to listen to audio on import ?
Pretty simple - rather than having this somewhat arbitrary rule imposed on iMovie users ?
The only way to monitor audio during import is to plug headphones into the camera itself.
Which means we are wearing a thing with a wire attached - making the BT headset capability of the Mac somewhat redundant.
Oh well ... one step forward, one step back.

  • Can't get sound to play ib .avi files

I have a Supacam DVX camera I bought at MacWorld '06. It records well and I am able tp play in VLC, but I can't get the sound to play in Quicktime or imovie. Any help is appreciated.

    That's odd. MPEG-4 shouldn't be a problem at all.
Open the file in QuickTime and hit (Command-I) to bring up the information on how this file was encoded (both video and audio).

  • No sound effects playing through any output device

Hi all. I have a frustrating issue with my late 2012 Mac Mini that started a couple of days ago. Maybe it is related to a system update (I think a OS and iTunes update was available last week) but I am not sure. Have checked that all preferences are correct (sound output, midi) and basically I have not personally altered any preferences whatsoever since I replaced my old HT receiver before Christmas.
The issues. I have no sound effects at all playing either through HDMI (cable to Pioneer SC-LX56) or internal. No trash can, no start up, no nothing. I have no sound when playing Spotify or iTunes. I get sound in Plex HT but the navigation sounds are gone. Normal playback of any movie or music works as before.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Roger

Hi den.thed and thanks for your reply. Yes, all these are checked and togglig the various output devices I have makes no difference. As I said everything worked flawlessly up until a couple of days ago and no changes apart from Apple SW updates (OS and iTunes). My Plex Home Theater (the only working sound output means at this point, even though navigation sound in Plex HT has also stopped working) and Media Server apps are unchaged as well. All other HDMI inputs on my HT work.
Further information. The volume icon in the menu bar is greyed out btw. I can toggle and see what output device is used but not change volume by sliding the bar. I am unable to change the alert or output volume as in your snapshot unless I chose internal speakers but this has no effect as there is no sound. I have looked into midi and it looks fine but I do not get speaker tones to test my speakers (I have not fiddled around in there before so what is there has been since i took the Mac mini into use). I have stopped the coreaudio process and rebooted but no difference. The only thing I have not done is  PRAM reset as far as browsing the Apple support community has taught me so far.
I really appreciate all support here.
    Thanks,
    Roger

  • I am having trouble getting sound on video clips I have imported into Premiere Elements 10.

I am having trouble getting sound when importing video clips into Premiere Elements 10.  Is someone able to offer me a solution as I have no idea what I have done to cause this to happen.
The clip has sound when opened with windows media player.
    Thank you

    Hi Steve,
After reading everybody’s responses I am feeling a little out of my depth.  Being new to this I am having difficulty in understanding a lot of the information given to me and also in the information you require from me.  It appears that one thing I should never do is mix film from two different cameras.  I would really like to fix this one particular clip though as it holds an interview that was taken when leaving Coober Pedy and something that I don’t want to lose.
I have today done some research on the camera that took the offending video clip.   It was a Samsung S85 and according to the Samsung website it uses MJPEG video format.
Here are the specifications as per the Samsung website.
    Camera Type
    Ultra-Compact Point-and-shoot Digital Camera
    Image Quality
    Image Sensor
    1/2.5" 8.3 Megapixel CCD
    Effective Resolution
    8.2 million pixels
    Color Depth
    24-Bit RGB
    Color Modes
Normal, B/W, Sepia, Negative, Red, Green, Blue, Custom Color
    Image File Formats
    JPEG (Super Fine, Fine, Normal)
    Recorded Resolution
    8M (3264 x 2448)
    7M (3264 x 2176) - 3:2
    6M (3264 x 1824) - Wide
    5M (2592 x 1944)
    3M (2048 x 1536)
    1M (1024 x 768)
    Video Recording
    AVI Motion JPEG with Audio
    640 x 480 @ 30 or 15 fps
    320 x 240 @ 30 or 15 fps
Clip length limited only by available memory
5x optical zoom available during video record
    Audio Recording
    WAV format (monaural)
I downloaded and installed Media Info and Morgan Multimedia MJPEG Codec V3.99.108 today.  Do I have to register it to get it to operate?  I read the documentation file that came with it hoping to find a clue as what I should do but I could not comprehend the information it contained.
Thank you and other members who have responded to my plea for all the help you have given me.

  • I cannot get sound to play from the internet when I hook it up to my TV via HDMI.

Itunes plays but I cannot get sound from the internet to play. Please help!

How old is your MBP? Some older MBPs don't support audio through HDMI, so you have to run a separate wire.
If your MBP is fairly recent, visit System Preferences > Sound > Output and select the device corresponding to your TV. (In my case, it includes the brand name of the TV in the "Name" column and "HDMI" in the "Type" column.)
