Getting started/best practises with iphoto?

I've have a messy Picture folder and once the files were imported into iPhoto it became apparent just how messy...
I would like guidance as to the best approach to organizing the mess.
I am considering:
1) delete the Original Import Folder as suggested fixes in Discussions here
2) review and remove unwanted Pictures in "Pictures" folder using Finder.
3) reimporting "Originals Folder" gets me my old files back doesn't it?
4) Editing Library in iPhoto leaves my Pictures folders in a mess??
The direction I think is right is to:
a: First reorganize/edit photos & folders in Pictures.
b: Import all folders from Pictures, (which it doesn't look like was Originally done) currently missing photos.
c: remove & save the files from Pictures to External HD
d: Better understand importing and organizing future material.
What I am concerned about is how to accomplish step b: given my current state.
your help is most appreciated.
janice

The iPhoto library always keeps the original photo plus the latest modified version (if one exists).
Whatever you do, don't ever mess with the innards of the iPhoto library. You can move it as a unit and copy to CD/DVD as a unit but don't ever take it apart. If any photos exist anywhere OUTSIDE OF THE LIBRARY, then they are truly unnecessary dupes.

  • Best Practises with ACS Replication & external databases

    I am looking for a best practise with the following scenario:
    2 ACS Servers in 2 separate locations, each providing mutual backup to each other - i.e. all devices/users in Site X point to local ACS Server X 1st and remote ACS Server Y 2nd. In Site Y the devices/users point to the local ACS Server Y 1st and remote ACS Server X 2nd. This works fine; currently Server X replicates the Database to Server Y.
    In the future we will be implementing a remote LDAP database and will forward unknown users to this database for authentication. As I understand it if an unknown user exists on the LDAP database then the ACS Server will create a local account (depending the mapping policy etc) and point the password at the remote LDAP server. If we replicate from Server X to Server Y, but Server Y has created an account for an unknown user will this get deleted on replication? Is there a best practise to handle this scenario?
    Andy

    I could not find a best practices document as such but a lot of ground is covered in the document 'CiscoSecure Database Replication' at http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/access/acs_soft/csacs4nt/acs33/user/sad.htm#wp755988.

  • How Do I Get the Best Range with the Express?

    What settings should I use to get the best range with the express? What Radio Mode, Multicast Rate and Transmit Power should I use? What is the estimated area that this will cover?

    +What Radio Mode+
    802.11g only would be a good compromise. Here I am assuming when you say that you want the best range that you do not care if better range means lower network speed. Everything in wireless is a trade off. You cannot gain something without giving something else up in return.
    +Transmit Power+
    100%
    +Multicast Rate+
    No effect on range, but a good idea to use a lower setting in general
    +What is the estimated area that this will cover?+
    Not possible to predict without knowing a whole lot more about how many obstructions will be in the signal path, what they are, the construction of your home, other wireless networks and cordless phones around you, etc. and many other factors. Please tell us what you are trying to do with as many details as possible.

  • HT4906 So to get Photostream to operate with iPhoto...

    So to get Photostream to work with iPhoto, I have to upgrade from '09 to '11 (two year product cycle, nice rip off) but a quick check shows that in 2013 (another 2 years) iPhoto '11 is absolutely horrible according to user reviews and remains so for an inexcusable amount of time? What's the deal?

    The Mac App store reviews are the least useful reviews on the planet, frankly. Yes they are offered by flks who have bought the software but the key question is "what do they know"? I see lots of reviews saying things like iPhoto 11 trashed my library. However, I'm not sure that it did. The damage shows up after upgrading, but in a lot of cases that damage may well have been present in the library prior to upgrading, and the process of upgrading has exposed it. To the user that looks the same, but the cause is very different - and so is the solution. That's what I mean about the experience and knowledge of the reviewer.
    Your own comments illustrate a case in point. You begin:
    Since I didn't get a straight answer to iPhoto's problems
    and though this is your second post you haven't identified any. You're now writing as though there are some sort of cohort of well-known "iPhoto problems" when none such exist. You've not pointed to a single one.
    Then when you get to cases: The first thread illustrates my point again. A poster who says "iPhoto has lost all his photos" but then says, actually, it didn' lose any because he can still see them with Picasa. We then go through seven posts to get the key piece of information and finally a solution - well perhaps a solution as they never came back. And the likely cause of their issue: surfing the Library with a 3rd party app (Picasa) which uses a hack to do this, and therefore can cause damage.
    The second thread is resolved with a re-install - so a faulty install was the problem.
    The next is resolved by a rebuild.
    The last one has two unrelated issues, one fixed by a rebuild and one by a reinstall.
    There is no evidence in any of these threads of a problem with iPhoto 11, only that individuals have problems from time to time. They can be caused by any number of things. Your familiar with iPhoto 09. Have a search. See how many threads reference the same or similar problems in that.
    Would it be accurate to say that when iPhoto '11 does have a problem, your options pretty much come down to create a new library and pray that you get your pictures back (or your time machine is working) or completely delete the application, dig out reciepts left behind and then reinstall this program (with the same hopes that time machine is working)?
    It would be exactly as accurate to say exactly the same about iPhoto 09. With iPhoto 11 reinstalling is more simple and the safety for any data on your machine is a good, tested back up.
    So, here's the thing. The problems that people report on here for iPhoto 11 are exactly the same ones they report on here for iPhoto 09 and iPhoto 07 etc etc etc. Most people never have a problem. There is no evidence that the cause of these issues lies solely with the app, but can be caused by a variety of reasons.

  • How to get started Organizing photos with tags and albums

    Apporximately 15,000
    Mostly family, vacations, travel, etc over 30 years
    What is the BEST way to get started?  Should I tag them first or put them in albums and sub-albums and then try to tag and further identify them?  I know nothing of how is best to proceed.
    I am oveerwhelmed with the process and cannot seem to find a starting point.  I have looked at many of the tutorials, but cannot find a "1-2-3 A-B-C" roadmap.
    Message title was edited by: Brett N

    I would recommend doing all (okay, almost all) of your organizing via tags. Don't bother using albums unless there are a subset of photos that you want to display somehow (like a slideshow, or photobook) in which case albums are the right tool. Also, make sure that when appropriate, you add the proper captions and notes.
    I would start by using pencil and paper (or word processor) to make a list of categories and tags, in the appropriate hierarchy, that you might want. For example, in the people category, there are tags Jones Family, Smith Family, etc. (and sub-tags with people's names) In the event category, there are tags Vacation, Beach, Christmas, Hanuka, etc. Other categories you might want: Location (example: New York, Boston, Illinois), Content (mountain, church, waterfall, gorilla, historical site). This part completely depends on you.
    Once you have this hiearachy of categories and tags to your liking, start creating/adding the tags (and captions and notes if needed) to your photos. You can work in small batches. Eventually you will have all your photos tagged (trust me, I know, I did this too).
    Do NOT: move photos or folders from here to there, or rename them ... this is unnecessary extra work, as you will be using your tags from this point forward to locate your photos (exception: if you want/need to move the photos to a different hard disk, then by all means do so).

  • Canon S300 - how to get it to work with iPhoto?

    I have downloaded the proper drivers for the Canon S300 for OS X and this printer will work fine with data documents. However, it will not print pictures from iPhoto. I have been unable to find a list of printers supported by iPhoto. This is an older Canon printer and I imagine it would not be on such a list anyway. Does anyone know any tricks for using this printer with iPhoto?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
    When you clicking on the advanced tab it presents you with the full print dialog (the print dialog in iPhoto is known as simple). The Canon driver adds several print options to the printer menu (known as PDE's), one of which is the Quality & Media tab that you are selecting for the high-quality photo option. There is a chance that you may be using an older version that has not been written for the Intel platform thus giving you an error. The quickest way to check this would be to print the photo without selecting the high-quality setting. From the simple print window in iPhoto, if you can print to the S300 without the spooler stopping then we know there is only an issue when you select the Canon extra features.
    To check the version of the PDE's installed on your Mac, open /Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/PDEs. Here you will find the extra driver options. For the v4.1.5 driver, which is the latest for Tiger, you will see the options with a suffix of 415, ex QualityMedia415.pde. If you have older versions of the same file (shown with a lower number suffix) then this could be causing the trouble. Also, if you do a Get Info on the xx415.pde files, the General tab of the Info window should show a Kind of (Universal). If you don't have v415 files or if they show (PPC), then delete the contents of the BJPrinters folder, delete the printer from the Printer List, restart the Mac, reinstall the Canon S300 v4.1.5 driver, add the printer again and finish by running the repair permissions option in Disk Utility. Then try printing from iPhoto again using the high-quality option to see if that works.

  • Getting started --- best approach?

    I have recently purchased Adobe Master Collection CS5 and after looking at several Adobe video tutorials on Photoshop I am overwhelmed. I am running it on both Windows 7 (64-bit) and Windows Vista (32-bit) platforms. I have used Corel Draw previously and it my first impression of Photoshop is that it has much more capability than Corel Draw. However, Photoshop has so many features that it very hard for me fully appreciated this features when examined individually.
    I would appreciate greatly some guidance on how to attack Photoshop to get the most out of it and be able to use it in a near optimal way. For instance, I am interested to painting images that I have taken with a digital camera. Are there any good (complete) examples that show all the details of how to accomplish this with Photoshop? Are then any recent books on how to do this --- books that actually give the details?
    Of course, I hope to expand my knowledge of CS5 and use some of the other software packages (e.g. In Design); but, I thought that it would be good to start with Photoshop. However, I am open to any suggestions (e.g. books, tutorial material, web links, etc.) as to how to procede on learning how to use this powerful collection of software.

    Hi,
    To get at the full depth of painting improvements in Ps CS5 you'll want to get a tablet and the 6D Art pen. You might also try going to Window> Workspace> Painting to set up your panels. Russell Brown recently did a tutorial on painting you can find here: http://av.adobe.com/russellbrown/ClonePaint_SM.mov
    He also metions checking out these sights for digital painting.

  • How do I get started replacing JCo with JCA?

    Hi all,
    After upgrading to EP SP15 I'm now reading that I should stop using JCo for client connection and start using JCA.
    I've searched but can't seem to find any step-by-step procedure that shows me how to convert my existing Java code to be JCA-compliant.
    Basically, I was doing client = poolEntry.getClient() and then using the client.execute("myrfc").  What code change is required to replace that code with JCA code?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hey Mike,
    Glad I could help!!
    There have been a couple things that I have noticed.  If you are using a table as an input parameter, use a table.close() once you are done filling it and before adding it to the importParams("table_name",table) code.  I have two scenarios for that.  Here is the first:
    for (int j = 0; j < exportTable.length; j++) {
         table.insertRow();
         table.setString("VAR1", exportTable[j][0]);
         table.setString("VAR2", exportTable[j][1]);
    table.close();
    importParams.put("EXTAB", table);
    ,and the second one:
    table.insertRow();
    table.setString("VAR1", "This is variable 1");
    table.setString("VAR2", "This is variable 2");
    table.close();
    importParams.put("EXTAB", table);
    We are running EP6 SP14.  In that booklet, it doesn't show using table.close().  You may not have to use it, but for me, I couldn't get it to work any other way.  Once it was working, I removed it, and I would receive nothing.
    Other than that right now, I haven't really run into any other problems... yet... haha.
    Cheers,
    Kevin

  • Getting Started Sharing Data with SAP?

    Hi Folks, as will be apparent, I'm a complete newbie with SAP.
    Long and short of it is this: I have an App that generates project plans for maintenance systems, costs and budgets them, and reports 'currently' as a stand alone package.
    A number of Clients who use the package already have SAP handling some of these aspect, and therefore would like some degree of integration. Primarily for our package to pass maintenance dates, costs and other performance data to SAP, and update work-scope progress etc. It would be useful if we could have two way linkage though to.
    My view is that we should be able simply to access the relevant columns in a SAP managed table(s), but I may be being very simplistic and naive?
    We use Java - developed with Servoy RAD, and access JDBC Dbs only.
    Q: Is there a Java Bean available that opens some degree of data sharing to SAP?
    Q: Where should I begin looking for info on how to do this?
    Q: Is it likely that we need a SAP Pro to develop this integration.
    Appreciate any feedback or guidance on where to look next!

This includes Business Objects SDKs, products, or technologies which do not fall under BusinessObjects Enterprise, BusinessObjects Edge, Crystal Reports Server, or Crystal Reports (for example Desktop Intelligence SDK, Universe Designer SDK, Portal Integration Kits, Java User Function Libraries, and other third party technologies or development languages).

    Dear sir.,
    I have  installed SAP ECC 6.0 for a chemical industry, now am planning to implement Best practise to reduce implementation time.
    1) As per the SAP Quick quide i have downloaded best practise for chemical industry(IS) and implemented through SAINT,  and the prerequisites were maintained as per the SAP notes 774615,1301301,1064635,
    2)The above mentioned notes explains minimum stack11 and sapka=18,sapkb=18,sapbw=20,PI_Basis-2005_1_700=20 and sap_ap=15 to update Ehp3 for SAP_APPL603.
    3) After updating all the above mentioned patch level i implemented the Best practise in saint and that was successful.
    But still  the problem persist in activation of BP by tcode /n/smb/bbi only 70% has been completed and activation stoped with *ABAP program error ASSIGNSUBSTRING_NOT_ALLOWED and relevent note is 1295083*_
    Please  any one tell me, is that required to update all the EHP3 components since i have maintained only SAP_APPL60304.
    What all Ehp3 components should be updated to get a smooth activation og BP for chemical industry.
