Getting started: Splitting video, simple titles/credits

I'm a brand-new owner of Adobe Premiere Elements. I'm a huge fan of Adobe products, though, and am an experienced Photoshop user.
What I need to do is very simple:
1) Split approx. 30 minutes videos into  2-3 parts (10-15 minutes in length, depending on which site I'm uploading this to)
2) Add simple text title and credits
That's it, for now. I've ordered a copy of "Adobe Premiere Elements 8: The missing manual" to learn how to use this software, but until then, could someone please direct me on how to perform these simple tasks? I could do them in Windows Movie Maker, but using that software was painful, so I wanted to get a decent editor.
I'll worry about more complicated stuff later. For now, help please? Links to tutorials, hand-holding, whatever is greatly appreciated

Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you've posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. This is a repository for articles on how to do things in PrE, and does not see nearly the traffic as the main forum. Hopefully, our MOD, Steve Grisetti, will move this out to the main forum.
Now, you have a couple of choices on how bes to do what you want.
The first is to use just "instances" of your main Clip. Let's call it the "master" Clip, but that term has other meanings in other editing programs. What you drag to your Timeline is NOT the Clip itself, but an instance of it. If you just wish to extract a portion from it, look in your Project Panel, where it will appear, after you either Capture, or Import it. Dbl-click on it, and it will open in the Source Monitor (looks a lot like the Program Monitor, but with options). Move the CTI (Current Time Indicator) to where you wish your new instance to begin. You can use the playback controls, or click-drag on the CTI. You can step forward, or backward, via the Arrow Cursor Keys to get to the exact Frame that you want to start with. Set your In-Point to that Frame (little bracket on the Source Monitor), and then go to where you want this instance to end. Set the End-Point (opposite facing bracket). Now, just drag from the Source Monitor to the Timeline and you will have an instance from that master Clip of the exact Duration, and with the proper In & Out Points set. This you can Export/Share. You have not altered your master Clip in any way. You can repeat this process, over and over, if you wanted to join up several segments from the master Clip.
Second way would be to drag the master Clip from the Project Panel to the Timeline. Using the CTI there, go to where you want to Cut, and press Ctrl+K to Cut both the Video and Audio. Now, go to the end of the material that you want to remove, and repeat. Select that material to be deleted, Rt-click and choose Delete and Close Gap. Repeat, as is necessary. Export/Share, when done.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • What happened to the 'Getting started with video' forum?

Where is it?  I have not been able to find it anywhere since the change to the new forums.
The "Other Pro Video" would seem to be a possibly logical location, but most of the posts there are about Shake.

It's content is now under Final Cut Express HD.

  • Need help getting started -Editing software

    Hello everyone
I need to get started with video editing on a Mac -
    I didn't touch an editing software since 1998 , it was premiere 4.2 on a PC !
And didn't keep up with what's new but i'm now using a Mac!
I assume now most software allow realtime rendering, and have great tools !
So, I'd like to put together a holiday movie I shot on a DV camera-
once finished , it would either play from the computer connected to a Video projector AND / OR burned on a DVD .
I'd like to make something a bit creative : Split frames / moving Titles accross the screen etc...
    my questions :
-If possible, I'd like to minimize the rendering process ( realtime?) What is a good editing software Imovie / Final cut ( which one?) / Premiere ?
-What can I use to create split frame ( video)
-What can I use to create moving titles ? ( important)
-Can this be achievable on a Macbook 1,83GHZ / 2GB of RAM/ 250GB EXT. Harddrive FW.?
Thanks for you inputs ( Open subject )
    David

You don't need timecode to make frame accurate cuts.
You simply play or drag the playhead to roughly where you want it and then use the left and right arrow keys to move frame by frame to the exact frame you want.
Incidentally if you hold down the Shift key, each touch of the arrow key will jump 10 frames.
iMovie has a tremendous amount of potential which may be hidden away at first sight.
Take a look at those fantastic and easy to produce titles - the hardest part is typing the letters!
Incidentally, even FCE does not display the original tape timecode natively.
    Ian.
P.S. The best way to unlock most of its secrets is to get a book. Most good libraries usually stock them or can get them for you.

  • Embedding video in a gui (getting started advice)

I have a project with a swing gui that i would like to embed a video screen in. the video will stream from a web camera and provide a live picture. I am new to the idea of handling video streams so have i come to the right place? what should i look at to get started?

    Dear andreyvk ,
I've read your post about how to use a single RTP session for both media reception and trasmission (I'm referring to you RTPSocketAdapter modified version), but, at the moment, I'receive a BIND error.
I think that your post is an EXCELLENT solution. I'modified AVReceive3 and AVTransmit3 in order to accept all parameters (Local IP & Port, Remote IP & Port).
Can you please give me a simple scenario so I can understand what the mistake?
I'use AVTransmit3 and AVReceive3 from different prompts and if I run these 2 classes contemporarely both in 2 different PC (172.17.32.27 and 172.17.32.30) I can transmit the media (vfw://0 for example) using AVTransmit3 but I'can't receive nothing if I run also AVReceive3 in the same PC?
What's the problem? Furthermore, If I run first AVReceive3 from a MSDOS Prompt and subsequently I run AVTransmit3 from another prompt I see a BIND error (port already in use).
How can I use your modified RTPSocketAdapter in order to send and receive a single media from the same port (e.g. 7500).
    I've used this scenario PC1: IP 172.17.32.30 Local Port 5000 and PC2:IP 172.17.32.27 LocalPort 10000
So in the PC1 I run:
    AVTransmit3 vfw://0 <Local IP 172.17.32.30> <5000> <Remote IP 172.17.32.27> <10000>
    AVReceive3 <Local IP 172.17.32.30/5000> <Remote IP 172.17.32.27/10000>
    and in PC2:
    AVTransmit3 vfw://0 <Local IP 172.17.32.27> <10000> <Remote IP 172.17.32.30> <5000>
    AVReceive3 <Local IP 172.17.32.27/10000> <Remote IP 172.17.32.30/5000>
I'd like to use the same port 5000 (in PC1) and 10000 (in PC2) in order to transmit and receive rtp packets. How can i do that without receive a Bind Error? How can I receive packets (and playing these media if audio &/or video) from the same port used to send stream over the network?
How can I obtain a RTP Symmetric Transmission/Reception solution?
Please give me an hint. If you can't post this is my email: [email protected]

  • Why can't I get the Audi-video chat started?

My step-daughter and I have iSight cameras and Macintosh Computers with iChat installed. On Friday afternoon we tried to start a video-chat. I heard by phone, that we were both trying to get in touch with each other at the same time.
    • I was able to get my step-daughter entered as one of my ‘Buddies’. There is a Buddy List and her name is there, correctly. Though I have to add her name, from my address book, each time I close iChat down.
    • The rectangular menu has the following icons at the bottom A, a telephone icon & a video-camera ‘greyed out’. I do not see why I cannot blacken them.
    • When my step-daughter succeeded in getting her camera turned on (see could see herself on her computer screen) I double-clicked on the video-camera part of her name card in the buddy list.
    • Miraculously, but ultimately disappointingly, the process of trying to contact my step-daughter began. Another view of my camera picture appeared, the rotating ‘stop-clock’ type icon began spinning for about ten seconds. The message setting up video-chat changed to tell me that the attempt to establish a video-chat had failed because I had failed to respond.
    • But I had no indication of how to respond. Minutes later I was able to establish a chat with my step-daughter with text. If I can establish textual contact, why not audiovisual?
    • I take it the use of Bonjour is the way to go rather than aim.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I'm not sure how to add to my own topic, or I'm supposed to... but here goes.
One thought as to why text messages will work and Audio Video won't has to do with broadband speed. I checked my Internet Service Provider website (Cable & Wireless in the Cayman Islands) and they have a way of 'Testing Your Broadband Speed'.
I tried that and although I could not print the results, the test told me that my download speed is 1.3 mb and my upload speed is 553 kb. I haven't a clue if that is fast, slow or something in between. however, page 3 of the iChat brochure (videoconferencing for the rest of us) http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/ichat/ said that to initiate or participate in a 1 to 1 video conference the bandwidth required is 100 kbps. I've got that, right?
Another thoughtthat I had was that my step-daughter may not have 'Full .Mac membership', she may just be 'on trial'. I'll ask her and if that's the case it's problem solved, see page one of http://www.mac.com/1/ichat.html.
Router doubts have been dispelled. I have a Netopia not a Belkin. A troubleshooting piece from 2003 refering to a Beta version of all this said that a Belkin router would not do the business.
So, anymore thoughts out there, Mac people?

iTunes 9 installation was smoothly and quickly, however:
While the "Welcome to iTunes" startup window opens properly but"Getting Started with iTunes 9" movie won't fully load or play.
This first tutorial movie on the "Welcome" list only plays the first couple of minutes and stops. Close Window and/or Quit/Restart iTunes relaunches "Welcome" and "Getting Started" but the movie still won't play.
I also have the latest version of QuickTime (v7.6.4, downloaded this morning) installed under Mac OS 10.5.8.

Immediately after installing iTunes 9.0 and Opening iTunes, the 'Getting Started' folder popped up in front of the iTunes window. I wanted to 'look around' at iTunes first, so Closed the Getting Started window. Now that I'm ready to watch those videos, I can no longer FIND that folder or the videos. Anyone know what happens to them once they've been Closed? Thanks...

The Firefox button referred to many times in the Getting started video for Firefox 4 (for Mac) does not appear on my window. I can't find a setting for it, how do I get it?

The Firefox button is only on Linux and Windows. The Mac handles menus differently. In the Mac the menu bar is controlled by the operating system and is always present. In Windows and Linux, the Firefox button replaces the menu bar which is not possible on the Mac.

  • Can't watch Getting Started video on 16.0.1 install page with up to date Intel Mac 10.6.8 - no mp4 plugin?

"Getting Started" page for Firefox 16.0.1 has a video window that plays audio only. Firefox test page for plugins shows RealPlayer, Flash, Flip4Mac and Java are up to date. What other video plugins are required. I'm currently using Firefox 10.0.2 and I'm not inclined to update unless I have good reasons to do so.

When the page opens I get a message that plugins are missing. Clicking on Install Missing Plugins comes up with Unknown Plugin (video/mp4); Manual Install takes me to the DivX Install page - DivX is up to date.
Once I start the video, Copy Video Location is not an option with Control-click. I can access Page Source, which seems to suggest that Flash is not installed although the Plug In check page says it is.
Is this extract from Page Source helpful?: div class="video-player-no-flash" This video requires a browser with support for open video or Flash.
There doesn't seem to be an option here to be able to attach the whole Page Source as a text file.
    Cheers.

Sounds like they are buffering because your internet speed is way to slow.
To check your internet speed, go to: > Speakeasy Speed Test
or > Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Plus you can also check your internet speed using the Activity Monitor, which is in your Utilities Folder.
