Getting started where.

Hi I have a few questions about where to start in learning to program on my mac.
Powerbook G3 500mhz 1GB RAM Mac OS X 10.4.11
60GB disk with SuperDuper Sandbox and Macintosh drive volumes set up.
1. Can it be done on such old hardware? I am new to this aspect and don't really know about capabilities.
2. Is Tiger Cocoa? Or do I need it?
3. Are there "getting started" guidelines, requirements, and tutorials available on the Apple website anywhere? I haven't been able to find too much other than Xcode 3.0 download which seems to require Leopard, and then this here discussions forum. Being as I'm new to this area, I'm sure I would be quite confused and lost with the terminology and looking through the various topics of this forum.
4. Does Xcode only come with Macs with Leopard? They say it is on every Mac but I can't seem to find it in my Utilities and I don't recall seeing it in the Installer as an option.
5. If I got the required tools, would I install and run them in the Sandbox volume or the other?
I'm not really sure where I want to go with this but I'm wanting to at least dabble in it to see where it leads.
I visited the Apple Developer Connection website but I'm not quite sure I belong there yet.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Absolutely! I used to program on my old MacPlus. Of course, it wasn't the base model. I had upgraded it to 2.5 MB RAM and two (count 'em!) floppy drives.
It will be quite a while before you exhaust the capabilities of your "old" machine.
2. Is Tiger Cocoa? Or do I need it?
Cocoa is just the name for Apple's latest user interface library. If you want to write fancy applications, that is how you want to do it. You don't have to start there. You can work on plain old C and C++ programs while you are still learning.

Not too much. Very, very few people start programming on the Macintosh. They usually learn programming in school on some other platform and then learn Mac programming on their own. After 25 years, the Mac is just now starting to get some respect from academia and industry - emphasis on the "starting to" part.
Consequently, there isn't much in the way of "beginning" programming on the Mac. But, of course, the Mac is still UNIX. There are lots of tutorials and other opportunities to learn C or Java on UNIX. From there you can do something interesting.
4. Does Xcode only come with Macs with Leopard? They say it is on every Mac but I can't seem to find it in my Utilities and I don't recall seeing it in the Installer as an option.
It is an optional install on the DVD. You will probably have to stick with the version of Xcode on your 10.4 disk. That isn't such a big deal. You are really only missing out on a bunch of Interface Builder and editor bugs in the newer Xcodes.
5. If I got the required tools, would I install and run them in the Sandbox volume or the other?
I'm not sure what a Sandbox volume is. You will install Xcode into /Developer on your startup volume. You can put your projects wherever you want.

There isn't much there for those of us who aren't paying for the premium memberships.
The key thing to do is have patience.

  • Just getting started, where are my Pics?

I'm new to aperture and this is my first post.
    O.K.
When I import images into aperture from a cf card I can't find the files in my finder or spotlight. So I check my preferences to see where they are going and it says to my aperture library that I have previously selected in my photo folder.
Am I importing wrong or is there another way to access these files without opening Aperture. My concern is that if I want to attach these files in an email or a website that auto scales the image, I can't access them unless they are exported from Aperture.
thanks, and take it easy if this is a no brainer and i'm missing something

Yes - the key is that they are in a special directory called a Package, which is your Aperture library.
Inside your "Pictures" folder is a file called Aperture Library.aplibrary. If you right click on this file in Finder (again, really a directory) you can choose "Show Package Contents".
Once that window opens, you'll see another directory with a few different things in it including a file that has the same name as the Project you imported into. This too is a Package - right click on that and "show package contents".
You get another window and in there is a directory that starts with "import" which is where all your imported images are stored. Each image is in it's own directory, this is because later as you start making Versions Aperture can keep the version related files and other metadata along with the original image without things getting too messy.
You can keep a link to that import directory in your Finder sidebar.
That's how you can reach your original files without Aperture. However it's really easy just to export versions from Aperture on demand - it has a specific "Send image to email" command and you can export a group of images quickly at whatever size you think is best to any directory to use with other things.

  • Getting Started (Where to Start?)

We have successfully installed the 10g Application Server, all the components (Infrastructure, and Middle Tier), and the latest patchset.
Now my question is, where do I start? We want to use Singe Sign On, Discoverer, Portal, Forms, Reports, and the OID. Where do I begin? is there a "best" place to start?
We just want to go through configuring all the pieces in the best possible manner, so we don't have to go back and repeat any steps. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok then, thanks for that. This is how I picture it so far, a possible way of doing this:
You would have an Item array, of 500 items, each with their own number (1-500) and each with their own weight (4 * their item number).
Then there would be a Chromosome array, which would be an array of Items (500 of them). Each of these would be put into a random bin (from 1 - 10), and calculations would be made so that the bins' weights would be cumulative.
Then there is a Population array, which is an array of random Chromosomes, that would all have their own fitness function worked out (in this case, fitness function is equal to the heaviest bin - the lightest bin).
What does everyone think? Please correct me if this is not on the right lines. As I said, i'm a java n00b.
    thanks

  • Windows Mobile Service, getting started, doesn't work.

I have followed the instructions for creating a mobile data service (several times, under and existing and a new subscription, using an existing and a new database): create the service, download the todo app, build and run it locally (it works), change the
connection setting to Azure and get "Error loading items The request could not be completed (not found)".
    The instructions are at: http://azure.microsoft.com/en-gb/documentation/articles/mobile-services-dotnet-backend-windows-store-dotnet-get-started/
Where do I go from here?

    ... cancel this.
If I ignore the instructions, I can get it to connect.

  • 10.3 Server - Where do I find documents referred to in "Getting Started"

    Hello,
I've recently taken over an xserve running 10.3 Server and am trying to give myself a crash course on it. In the "Getting Started" guide, under the Workgroup Manager section it says "Information about using workgroup manager appears in several documents..." and then it lists these documents. But, it doesn't list WHERE I can find these documents?
There's nothing on the Apple site about 10.3 server (only 10.4+) so I'm hoping someone can direct me in the direction of these documents?
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

It appears that you're going to have to scrounge [here|http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22macos+x+server%22+10.3+manualssite%3Aapple.com] to retrieve what is available. Key in the specific manual names and off you go... (That site: keyword used in that query, BTW, can better target your quest.)
I'd probably start with a disk image and archival processing, with any missing updates, and then with transferring from the current PPC 10.3 Panther configuration box over to more current hardware and software.

  • Where is the Getting Started page in Acrobat 9?

I seem to be missing the Getting Started page in Acrobat 9 that has all the project types that pops up when you first start Acrobat. Acrobat 8 had this, but now when I run Acrobat 9, I just get Acrobat 9 with menus and toolbars only. Is this something that was removed from 9?

    Hi Jean-Paul,
It was removed in Acrobat 9 (you aren't the first to miss it).

  • Where do I find the cc getting started Katies.mulib File ?

I have downloaded the sample files to practice, Extracted them to my desktop. But this is what shows up
I am probably missing something.... As you can see I took the Zip. Put it in its own folder and then just selected, Extract Files Here and yet I dont see a CC Getting Started Katies.mulib file that is used for importing items to the library.
Help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Also logo-interior.png and logo-landing.png...in fact I don't think that zip is the right one at all.
It appears to be from a different (older?) tutorial.  At least, the .muse "step" files don't have the site pictured here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/muse/how-to/create-website.html
Looks like a similar issue a year ago

    Hi there,
Go to this page and type in "logic express" (with the quote marks). There isn't, as far as I know, a manual called Getting Started with Logic Express but you will find Reference, What's New, Plug-ins etc. The Gettign Started book is for Logic Pro but it will certainly help with the early days in Logic Express
