Getting started with SAP BW

Hi!
I already have read SAP courses BW305 and BW310 and went through [SAP BW example |http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/46/8df2e4ebf268e5e10000000a1553f7/frameset.htm ].
I have a SAP NetWeaver 7.0 system and SAP ERP IDES 6.0.
Now I would like to continue to gain practical experience.
What could the next step?
Of great interest for me are:
- a case study/example where I can load and analyze data from SAP ERP IDES ECC 6.0
- a case study in area bw bases consolidation
- other practical topics
Any helpful information/SDN blogs, etc. will be very appreciated!
Thank you very much!
Thom

Hi Thom,
You can find many in SDN. Please find below a very few links which might help u...
You need to majorly concentrate on Modelling and Business content.
Start with modelling and then have a look at Business content objects. Then go for extraction and then for reporting. If you have R/3 along with BW with you, that would be good enough to work with.
Consider a Business Cycle like Manufacturing Industry Life cycle from scratch like Establishing the manufacturing industry till production of goods where all the modules are involved.
<y suggestion is that you better take suggestion contacting a BI consultant directly and take his help in understanding teh realtime scenarios and case studies.
You may find many case studies in SDN but if you have physical guidance that would be great enough to gain much grip about the functionalities of the scenarios.

  • Getting started with SAP Netweaver

    Hi there,
    I am an IT professional with 7 years of development/project management experience in MS technologies.
    I want to learn SAP Netweaver, but very new to SAP!
    What is the Pre-requisite to learn Netweaver? Should I know ABAP to get into the Netweaver platform?
    Please advice me and provide some useful materials to getting started with Netweaver.
    Thanx.
    Aslu

    Hi Aslam,
    there was a recent thread about a similar question of yours, please check out First time in  SAP  Netweaver
    There are so many NetWeaver components so your question is a bit hard to answer.. But if you want to keep on programming, you really don't need ABAP much. NetWeaver is mostly about Java (Web App Server & Enterprise Portal programming), but you have touching points to both .NET and ABAP.
    Hope this helps,

  • Get started with SAP Security

    Hi Guys,
    My company will implement sap very shortly and I have an opportunity to get in to it.
    I have some user level knowledge of SAP. What is the best way to practice. I have access to the system. I read some material on sap website. Can some one point me to get started to learn.
    Thanks,
    MS.

    SAP software is huge and there are so many different areas into it. It is best to undergo training to get started on SAP. Since your company is going to implement SAP soon, most likely you will be imparted training depending upon your role. But if you want to take initiative and have ambition to get into an SAP role, you may need to put extra effort.
    SAP Education (a division of SAP) and SAP Education Partners (e.g. Siemens Information Services, NIIT and a lot many) provide trainings - classroom, virtual and e-learning. But that may cost you a lot. There are several online training providers who provide SAP training at reasonable price. You may Google and find a good one. The SAP forums may also help you in your search. You already have SAP system access, so you are spared from sending money on this front. Otherwise it too may cost you depending on your usage.
    Still if you want to look for resources which can help you do things on SAP system, all I can tell you is that there is no such organized SAP Handbook. You may go through a book on using SAP and for general information. Yes, for different topics you will get tutorials which guide you step-wise-step. For example, suppose you want know how for LSMW (Legacy System Migration Workbench) which uploads data from your local system to SAP system so that SAP users can make use of it. You can search for LSMW and you will find information (e.g I found this in Google search results: LSMW FAQs) which will help you to carry out the task. The point I want to make is you need to know what you want to do and then you can search for the required information.
    Probably in ABAP (SAP Programming language), it's possible to get started. You can go through an SAP Press Book "ABAP Objects" from Horst Keller and Sascha Kruger which starts you with your first ABAP program.
    If you want an overview of SAP software and various solutions in the mySAP Business Suite family (which you will come across while implementation and after-wards at your company), the following series of articles may help you:
    PART-1 What is SAP?
    PART-2 Evolution of SAP ERP Software
    PART-3 Introduction to SAP Business Suite
    PART-4 SAP definition of terms and its various offerings
    Hope it helps:-)

    Hi Thom Heinemann  ,
    The following websites containing PDF & PPT docs on BI will gain u confidence :
    What is a BW datasource?What is meant by maintaining a datasource?
    A BW datasource is a structure which is created in the source system and replicated to the BW system. Maintaining a datasource in a source system is doing any changes related to the datasource. It could be adding/deleting fields or checking the flags in the datasource like the hide and selection flag. Also, if the datasource is provided in the LO Cockpit, changes can be made there too depending on how the extraction of data is ...

    An InfoCube describes a self-contained dataset (from the reporting view), for example, for a business-oriented area. This dataset can be evaluated with the BEx query.An InfoCube is a set of relational tables that are created in accordance with the star schema: a large fact table in the center, with several dimension tables surrounding it.
    In its esence, Infocube is a data container. Data containers are used as a basis for analysis and reporting processes in SAP BW. Infocubes in SAP BW serve exactly this purpose. Infocubes in SAP consist of Key figures and characteristics. You can find some detailed information on key figures here. Simply speaking, infocube is any repository which contains data. Moving on to the types of infocubes. In SAP BW, there are basically two classes of infocubes. These are:
    Basic Infocubes - These are also called as physical infocubes.
    Remote Infocubes - These are also called as virtual infocubes.
    The basic difference between the above two types of infocubes is that basic infocubes are physically stored in the same SAP BW system as their meta data description. Remote infocubes are stored on a third party custom SAP BW. Both the above types of BW infocubes consist of key figures and characteristics. These characteristics in turn are divided into 16 dimensions. More on that in another post.

    Extract Structure
    In the extract structure, data from a DataSource is staged in the source system. The extract structure contains the amount of fields that are offered by an extractor in the source system for the data loading process. You can edit and enhance DataSource extract structures in the source system. To do this, in the BW Administrator Workbench choose Goto à Modeling à Source Systems à Your Source System à Context Menu (right mouse click) à Customizing Extractors à Subsequent Processing of DataSources.
    Transfer Structure
    The transfer structure is the structure in which the data is transported from the source system into the SAP Business Information Warehouse. It provides a selection of the extract structure fields for the source system.
    Use
    The transfer structure provides BW with all the source system information available for a business process.
    An InfoSource in BW requires at least one DataSource for data extraction. DataSource data that logically belongs together is staged in an extract structure in an SAP source system.
    In the transfer structure maintenance, you determine which extract structure fields are transferred to the BW. When you activate the transfer rules in BW, an identical transfer structure for BW is created in the source system from the extractor structure.
    This data is transferred 1:1 from the transfer structure of the source system into the BW transfer structure, and is then transferred into the BW communication structure using the transfer rules.
    A transfer structure always refers to a DataSource from a source system and an InfoSource in BW.
    You get to the maintenance of the transfer structure using the InfoSource tree of the Administrator Workbench. The context menu of the source system belonging to an InfoSource provides you with the maintenance marker using the function Maintain Transfer Rules.
    This website gives all definitions of Info object,infocube,infosource,datasource,commn structure,extract structure ..etc..

    SAP Business Information Warehouse
    SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is the name of the Business Intelligence, analytical, reporting and Data Warehousing (DW) solution which is one of the major enterprise software applications produced by SAP AG. It was originally named SAP BIW, (Business Information Warehouse), but is now known as "SAP NetWeaver BI".
    SAP BW consists among other things of components for data management (Data Warehousing Workbench), extensive data modeling capabilities, an embedded analytical engine, a suite of rich front-end analytical tools refererred to as Business Explorer (BEx), and operational tools used for importing the most current transactional data into the system. It may be helpful to consider layers that make up the structure of SAP's BI solution:
    Extraction, Transformation and Load (ETL) layer - responsible for extracting data from a specific source, applying transformation rules, and loading it into SAP BW system.
    Data warehouse area - responsible for storing the information in various types of structures, including multidimensional structures called InfoCubes.
    Reporting - responsible for accessing the information in data warehouse area and presenting it in a user-friendly manner to the analyst or business user.
    Planning - Provides capabilities for the user to run simulations and perform tasks such as budget calculations.
    SAP's BI application is a very pervasively employed data warehouse / analytical enterprise software solution, often utilized heavily by companies that essentially run their business on SAP operational systems such as SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (SAP ERP, traditionally known as SAP R/3). SAP's BI solution contains a large number of predefined "extractors", a very significant amount of pre-defined business content in the form of InfoCubes, master data (i.e. objects representing the entity for "Customer", or "Material"), authorization roles, query views and reports all delivered in the software by SAP. Some of the significant benefits of this approach include the ability to leverage SAP's substantial business knowledge from many years of developing extremely sophisticated software systems for the world's largest companies, typically shortening project development cycles in the process. The pre-defined business content can be modified to meet an organization's specific requirements, while at the same time taking advantage of general aspects of these delivered data models and reports that are somewhat foundational and have broad application in business, government, and education.
    SAP BW is now part of a suite of SAP applications called SAP NetWeaver. Other components of SAP NetWeaver include SAP Enterprise Portal (EP, called SAP NetWeaver Portal as of Release 7.0), Web Application Server (WAS), SAP Process Integration (PI, or previously XI, i.e. eXchange Infrastructure) and Master Data Management (MDM).
    The 7.0 version of SAP BW was released in June 2006 as part of the SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (aka 2004s). This new release includes many new features, such as next-generation reporting and analytical features, major data warehousing enhancements, and possibility to use innovative techology for query performance optimization called "BI Accelerator". BI Accelerator (or BIa) comes as an external applicance, i.e. complete hardware with pre-installed software. BIa requires separate licence fee.
    From SAP NetWeaver 7.0 on, the term SAP BW is obsolete, and instead it is referred simply as "SAP NetWeaver BI" - i.e. "SAP NetWeaver 7.0 BI".
    According to SAP, more than 12,000 installations of SAP's BI solution exist.
    SAP Business Information Warehouse (BW) is SAP´s Data Warehouse solution. It has been specially developed to allow you to gather and analyze all kinds of statistical information in the best possible way.
    The SAP Business Information Warehouse (SAP BW) is a core element of mySAP.com. SAP BW is an enterprise-wide information hub that enables data analysis from R/3 and other business application, including external data sources such as databases and the Internet. SAP BW also offers easy integration with other mySAP solutions, such as mySAP Supply Chain
    Management (mySAP SCM), mySAP Strategic Enterprise Management (mySAP SEM), and mySAP Customer Relationship Management (mySAP CRM).
    SAP BW is a comprehensive end-to-end data warehouse solution with optimized structures for reporting and analysis. To help knowledge workers quickly mine an enterpriseu2019s business data, SAP BW is equipped with preconfigured information models and reports, as well as automatic data extraction and loading methods.
    With an easy-to-use Microsoft Excel-based user interface, you can create, format, and analyze reports, and publish those reports to the web. Built for high performance, SAP BW resides on its own dedicated server. Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) and reporting activities are therefore separated, and system performance is not compromised.

    Also do provide me links for the updated pdf's of SAP FICO ECC 6.0.
    Thanks in Advance,

    until you work on it and solve some real time problems you don't get full knowledge in SAP module. so try to work on SAP system.asking for authorized books/links is against the Rules of SDN forum. search for FI & co (separate certification for both) in GOOGLE, SDN. you will get so many links & documents.

  • Get connection with SAP

    Hi
    How is it possible to get connection with SAP system when i am working in SAP NetWeaver developer studio?
    do i required any connector for this?
    Regards

    Hi Quali,
    Inorder to get connected to the SAP system via your SAP NWDS(SAP NetWeaver developer studio).
    1) Please check if you are able to get connected to the remote server, incase the server is on a different machine. You can do it by following the steps below:
    Click on Windows Start menu -> click on Run -> Typein "cmd" and click on Ok button -> Typein "Ping 'IP address of the remote server'", I mean your remote server machine's IP address(Ex:10.6.52.189 or whatever it is). If it responds then please carry out the following steps in NWDS.
    2) Please GoTo :
    NWDS menu - > Window -> Preferences -> SAP J2EE Engine(Choose this on the left menu).
    Now, if your server is not installed on the same machine on which you are working then go for the first radio button which says "SAP J2EE engine is installed on remote host" and enter the server's IP(Internet Protocol) address(Ex: 10.6.52.14, etc)in "Message Server Host" and enter 3601 in "Message Server Port".
    Click on apply and Ok.
    3) Now again Click on Windows Start menu -> click on Run -> Typein "drivers" and click on Ok button  -> Open the folder "etc" -> look for file "Hosts", openwith notepad
    -> Now typein the IP address and the corresponding host name(of the remote server)please note that the IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one space, preferably a tab space. -> save the hosts file.
    Now you should be able to connect to your remote server.
    Regards,
    Sudeep

  • Can not get example to work after following instructions given in "Getting Started with the NI LabVIEW C Generator" guide

    We explored using sbRIO for our project, for different reasons we ended up going with a different embedded solution . We are currently evaluating the LabVIEW C Generator to convert some of the core analysis routines from LabVIEW to C so the team that will be creating the embedded solution don't have to re-implement them from scratch.
    Before converting our code, I followed the instructions given in the "Getting Started with the NI LabVIEW C Generator" manual to create a static library created inCygwin using GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).
    I managed to compile the code, but when I type "run GCD.exe" in the Cygwin console, I just see the window flash with no time to see if the result is correct or not. I modified the main.c cde to add a getchar(), but the window still just flashes and now I am left with the GCD process still running and have to kill it using Windows Task Manager.
    Has anyone else got this example to run? I am sure I am missing an obvious setting or step, please help me.
    More details below.
    Thanks,
    Fab
    Here is a video showing the steps I followed
    If you don't want/can't see the video. Here are some screenshots of what I have done so far:
    GratestCommonDivisor.lvproj C Generation build specs Information:
    C Function prototype definition:
    I copied Makefile located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2011\examples\CGenerator\Tutorial\Cygwin
    and replaced both Makefile and Makefile.cygwin in the directory where the C code was generated
    I also copied main.c from the same location and replaced the one generated
    Here is the snapshot of the results after executing "make GCD.exe"
    Then to run it I just type
    I see a window open and close really quickly and I never see the result. I have tried adding the getchar() line to the main.c file, but still I don't get to see the results.

    Hi Kevin,
    I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I am attaching a zip file with the LabVIEW project, my build specification and my version of "Greatest Common Divisor.vi", which should be the same as the one that you have that ships with the LabVIEW C Generator, but just in case. I am also attaching a zip file with the C files generated by the LabVIEW C Generator.
    You can also see the video I posted earlier with the steps I followed. I hope you are able to point out where I went wrong.
    Thanks,
    Fab

  • Getting started with an iBook G3?

    Hey,
    I just got an iBook G3 (500mhz, snow, airport, 10gb hd, upgraded ram), to compliment my iMac (G5 rev c) and I'm a little new.
    It was used, I got it via trade.
    Does anyone have some tips for me to get started with it ? I'm wanting to upgrade the HD to at least 20 GB, and to max out the ram. Any hints on that ?
    Also, where can I get a new battery and charger ?
    Also, what else should I know about it ?
    It will mainly be used for writing (novel, fan-fics), surfing the web (wirelessly), and when I'm traveling...
    Oh, it has OSX10.2 installed.

    Hi, Josh. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    How much RAM is installed?
    Does it have the original AirPort card installed? (You may want to install one, if not, to enable wireless access to the internet.)
    Did the original system CD's and the OS X 10.2 software CD's come with it? If not, try to get the person you got it from to give them to you. You will need them if you intend to upgrade the hard drive (and for maintenance, even if you don't upgrade the hard drive).
    Hard drive upgrade services:
    MCE Technologies
    DT & T Computer Services
    A hard drive upgrade is very complicated, and best left to a professional.

    Enough dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from a logic board problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and be aware of how this logic board problem manifests itself.
    It has been suggested that you can minimize the chance of a logic board failure of this sort by never picking it up by the front left corner alone. Pick it up with both hands or in the center under the trackpad.
    It's also a good idea not to close it any more often than you need to in order to minimize the chance of the backlight cable (and other cables and wires) becoming pinched in the hinge or broken. When you have some time, check out the Discussion thread in the Displays Forum entitled 90 degrees and black out!!!!
    Information on using the battery to maximize both life and lifespan can be found here.
    You can download the manual for the iBook (Dual USB) from this page:

    Good luck, and happy iBooking!

  • Java Applet HelloWorld "Getting Started With Applets" example not working

    Hi there,
    It's been ages since I ran my Linux CentOS boot of Linux but I am going through the official oracle java applet tutorials, just every time I try and run the "Hello World" applet in Firefox 17.0.3 and I am running the Iced Tea thing for java applets.
    Every time I try and run the example from the following code:
    import javax.swing.JApplet;
    import javax.swing.SwingUtilities;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    public class HelloWorld extends JApplet
      // called when the user enters the html page:
      public void init() // keep apps within the init() function very small as per the http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/deployment/applet/appletMethods.html
        try{
          SwingUtilities.invokeAndWait(new Runnable()
            public void run()
           JLabel myLabel = new JLabel("Hello World");
           add(myLabel);
            } // end running the application
          }); //end of swing invokeand wait
        } catch (Exception error){ // end user running the app in page
           // System.err.println("GUI didn't work on initial run");
    }It keeps bringing up the error "Start: Applet not initialized" I did google that basic error and from what I found I should consult the JavaConsole, I know the console was removed from the Firefox menu quite a while ago. So went to find a way of loading it using the IcedTea one but it keeps bringing up a load of errors in even trying to run that.
    Is there anyway of sorting this out? I mean I have even tried installing the one on the oracle website, the plain JDK but nothing seems to work.
    Is there anyone that can help me get applets working? I was even going to go as far as to reinstall my distro but I want to avoid that as much as possible.
    Thanks and I look forward to any replies,
    Jeremy.

    in the Getting Started with Java DB tutorial they
    tell u how to set ur "DERBY_HOME" (what is that?).
    once i press enter after typing this command:
    set DERBY_HOME=D:\Java\Java
    Phonebook\javadb in my command prompt do i get
    any message or does it just go to the next line?type env or set or whatever in the command line to see what your environment variables are set to
    they also tell u how to set ur "JAVA_HOME" (what is
    that?). The Java installation you want to use
    in their example they give u this: set
    JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\j2se1.4.2_05but in my java folder i have jdk1.6.0 and jre1.6.0
    but no j2se1.4.2_05, so which 1 must i choose?It's up to you. I'd go with 1.6
    also once ive done this: set
    DERBY_HOME=D:\Java\Java Phonebook\javadb this
    set JAVA_HOME=D:\Program
    Files\Java\jre1.6.0 and this set
    PATH=%DERBY_HOME%\bin;%PATH% and then type
    sysinfo to verify that the variables were set
    correctly i get these errors: 'D:\Java\Java' is
    not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file and '""'
    is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file any help would
    really be appreciated because this is really killing
    me!you need to set your path variable - so something like:
    set PATH=C:\Program Files\Java\j2se1.4.2_05\bin
