Getting stuff off old (dead) Powerbook

I got a new MacBook Pro 17" last week because the power jack on my old Powerbook had finally bit it and stopped charging (I think the soldering gave way). I got all the stuff off that I could before the batt died, but I still have tons of iTunes, etc, on there. The local Apple Store told me it could take 72 hours for them to transfer it (which would mean no computer for 3 days. not a really a workable option). Is there any other way to get the stuff off there and onto the new MBP? If I could just get the **** PB to power up for a few hours it would be no problem. I managed to get the orange light on the PB cord to come on, but no juice. Argh.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

It probably has an Ultra ATA/100 drive in it. I would call Mac Sales and they will get you the right one.

How to get data off old LC III drive

I have our first LC III computer that I gave to our in-laws...now they want data off of it and I don't know how to get it off easily. The HD is a SCSI interface I think...can I use a SCSI to usb cable? This machine was pre-ethernet, so no communication interface other than the printer port and a port for and old style modem.

It is not so easy to gain direct access to data on an old SCSI hard drive via a modern computer.
An alternative could be to use 1.44 MB floppy disks for transfers. Another semi-old (pre-1998) Mac with Ethernet could then read these floppies and forward the data files over a network. A newer Mac would require a USB floppy drive.
A Windows PC, with a floppy drive and a utility such as TransMac for the handling of Mac disks, could also be used.
Yet another solution could be a serial null-modem transfer. See the following discussion for details:

Any way to get contacts off a dead Centro?

My Centro died a few weeks ago (usual issue with the hotsync loop, not turning on, taking the battery out, etc.) and I never transfered my contacts list or photos to my SIM card. The phone is definitely dead -- no coming back this time like it has about 10x in the past. Is there a way to retrieve this information after the phone died? Is there a place I can send it to?

If you are sure it's totally dead then your only chance for getting data off the device is by googling "data recovery" and there are companies out there that can retrieve data off of dead devices. I'm not sure of the cost, but a little research and calling them will be able to give you your answer.

How can i get data off my dead hdd

i dont want to be super long winded but here goes. son was playing something computer froze upon restart get flashing ? folder. after perusing all the stuff on here i poped my install disk in and got to the disk utillity. i can intermittently see my internal drive but it shows it as media with a pic of the drive. clicking on it dose NOT give me the option to try first aid, or do pretty much anything to it. i have since installed osx on my external to get me running for the time being. so being on the phone with apple they said to take it in and have the hard drive replaced and its under warranty. the kicker is, and i know im a dumb *** and i should have known better, i need data off the drive and have not backed up anything. on the disk util i get some info it tells me its a sata drive, but it says total capicity is 0 bytes. but i can see it.
any thoughts will be appreciated.

If it failed *that* badly, experts are needed to extract the platters and couple them with identical controllers.

How to get photos off old iPhone

I just got the new iPhone 4s. Synced it to my iTunes and iPhoto. I downloaded photos to iCloud from my iPhone 4 before I got the new iPhone 4s. Unfortunately, iCloud was not turned on on my iMac. So, the photos did not go to my iPhoto stream. I tried connecting my old iPhone 4 to iPhoto, but now iPhoto doesn't recognize it. How an I get those photos from the elusive and mysterious iCloud? Or off the old iPhone 4? (Yes, I know I should've synced the 4 before getting the 4s. I did the night before, but then took some Christmas party photos at work, and I really don't want to lose them.)

I downloaded the photos to iCloud from my iPhone4 via wi fi while in the ATT store just prior to getting the iPhone 4s. On my iPhone4, the Christmas party photos are on the camera roll and also on the photo stream. On my iPhone 4s, there are no photos in the photo stream. However, the photos that I took at a concert last night did upload to iCloud and are visible in the photo stream on iPhoto. The Christmas party photos are not on the iPhoto photo stream.
So, where in the iCloud are the Christmas party photos? --- I should've just emailed them to myself the old fashioned way.

How to get stuff off of iphone that is no longer in service

My iphone stopped working so I was forced to get a new one, because it was not working I was unable to upload things from my icloud to my computer. I am not sure exactly how much of my stuff is on my icloud but I qould like to get whatever is there plus my music onto my computer. Is it possible to do this even though the phone is no longer in service

I did not sync my iphone3 music to my computer. Thought I did it properly but did not. New at this stuff. Now my IT person installed and configured my new iphone4 and my music is on old phone. Anyway to get it to new phone. Help.:)

Set up your new phone as if it were the old one. Settings, mail, mobile me, same email same password that you used on old phone. You can still sync the old phone to iTunes library. You may have to click on picture of phone on the left & click on back up iPhone. You'll see songs, contacts & calendar downloading in apple slot at the top. When done connect new phone. Authorize computer put in apple ID when that screen comes up & that should allow both phones to share the library. If you use the same ID the same information will be on both phones.

How do I get photos off old edition of Photoshop? Please help!

I downloaded the free trial of Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition a while ago and since then, whenever I upload photos from my camera onto the computer they automatically go onto this programme. This happened the other day and the photos were deleted from my camera but I was then told that my trial had run out and to get it again I had to click on something and they would send me an email with an unlock code. I then got an email saying that this edition was no longer available and to get another one. So I downloaded another trial but I still can't get the photos off the old edition off Photoshop without the unlock code they asked for. Is there anyway I can get them? Thanks.

It is a common misconception that Starter Edition 'stores', or copies, your files into it. But the program does not move or copy files at all, rather it scans your system's My Pictures directory, and generates miniature versions of your pictures (called thumbnails) so that you can browse a 'flat' list of thumbnails of your photos, overcoming the inconvenience of having to go into separate folders in Windows Explorer to have to find files.The thumbnails, as well as any tags, and Albums that you create in Starter Edition are all stored in the Photoshop Album catalog file, separate from your pictures, and your pictures remain where you originally copied them to your computer.
If you use Photoshop Album to subsequently download files from a digital camera or scanner, the default location where the program will create those files would be in the My Pictures>Digital Camera Photos folder. But if you do NOT use Photoshop Album Starter edition to download files from your camera, then you will find that folder empty.
The thumbnails in the Starter Edition catalog will exist, even if you decide to move or delete the original photos that were added to the program. This will cause files in the Photoshop Album catalog to become 'disconnected' from the original photos. To reconnect the files, you can use the File>Reconnect Missing files command to see if the program can locate the original files in a new location, and once again re-link the catalog thumbnails to the files they once referenced.
Since Photoshop Album has been discontinued, I recommend that folks find an alternative solution. One alternative that will preserve most of what you've created in Starter Edition is the Photoshop Elements 8 trial. Install that, and it will automatically convert the Photoshop Album catalog to a current format, and the program will not time out, as Starter Edition did. If you want to purchase more Editing power, you can also choose to purchase the full program, but it's not required.
If you are like many who have come to this forum wondering how you can get to your photos, now that the program has become locked or expired, don't worry; your photos have never been moved by Photoshop Album; they remain wherever you intially put them, on your hard drive. To get to them, you can navigate your file system using Windows Explorer. They are typically in your My Documents>My Pictures folder. You could use a USB external drive, or probably a USB flash drive. Both would need to be formatted for Mac, as +Mac OS Extended+ (also called HFS+). Copy off the files and then connect the drive to the MacBook. Since the old iMac only has USB 1.1, so it will be slow, but it should work.
The other way is to connect the iMac to your MacBook using an Ethernet cable. If it has Mac OS 9, it should work. Try following the steps show here

It is for the even older System 7, but it should work the same way with Mac OS 9. Note: You must connect from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X, not the other way.
Then, on the iMac, copy the files from the iMac's hard drive to the MacBook.

Get photos off old ipod

My old computer is gone. The photos from that computer were synced to my old, click wheel ipod, 80GB. I have the ipod. The ipod does appear in itunes, but the photo option on the left does not appear. The only option I have in itunes in to synce photos from my computer to my ipod. I don't want to do that! I want to get the photos off of my ipod and safely on my new computer.
Another thread said to try image capture, but that didn't work. Maybe ipod is too old?

Syncing photos is only one way, from your PC to your iPod. If you need to copy photos from your iPod back to your PC, you'll need the assistance of some third party software. Also keep in mind that these photos are no longer in their full resolution, but instead are scaled down thumbnail versions optimized for viewing on your iPod's small screen.

Getting docs off of "dead" G4

I have a very old G4 that I haven't turned on in probably 2 or 3 years. (I bought an iBook, and then got a MacBook, so I haven't needed it.) I thought there was a problem with the power strip, but have since learned that it's the Mac -- it just won't power on. There's nothing too important on it, but I'd love to get some of my old MP3s, Word docs, etc off of it.
Is there any way to do this w/out being able to power on the Mac? Or, is there an easy way to try to fix it? (The docs aren't THAT important, so I don't want to waste money having it repaired.)

So, I got the cable. First of all, I would recommend NOT buying from this company. The plastic top of the 40-pin adapter broke instantly, and the USB cord has rust forming on it! Still, I'm not sure if the problem is my cord or if I'm doing something wrong.
The hard drive has two 'female' inputs (not sure what they're technically called, but we'll just call them the '40 pin input' and the 'short input')
If I plug the 40-pin adapter into the hard drive and then plug the other end into my USB port of the laptop, a red light turns on the cord (and stays on.) But, no new drive appears on my laptop. Is there a next step?
I've also tried plugging in the short doohickey into the short input at the same time as the long doohickey. (And, I power on the portion which attached to the short input.) When I have them both plugged in, I can't even get the red light to appear.
So, am I supposed to have both plugged in at the same time? Should the red light come on when I do that? Is there something I have to turn on or off on the laptop (e.g. Sharing preferences, etc.) Ideas?

Need to attach printer to NEW wi-fi but can't get it off old wi-fi

i just bought a macbook, airport, and hp photosmart c4780. Stupidly set up the printer before I set up the airport. So now the printer is attached to my old linksys wi-fi that doesn't exists anymore and wont recognize the new airport router when i perform HP Setup Assistant.
again, im running a mac (snow leopard if it matters) i would like to print wirelessly from my new wi-fi network.
does anyone know how to disconnect the printer from a network?

For Snow Leopard the printer drivers are built into the OS. Do this:
1. Get the Airport set up and your computer connected to it so you can access the internet.
2. Unplug the printer from the wall, wait a minute, then plug it back in and re-start it.
3. Go to System Preferences, Print & Fax and add a printer (delete the printer first if it appears in the list by selecting it and hitting the minus sign).
4. You should see your printer on the network, select it and click Add.

How do I get stuff off the stage to show in a web browser on Flash CS4?

Okay, so I have a picture that I want to be my background. So I put it around the stage, but when I test my movie in a web browser, only my stage shows. Is there a way I can get it to all show? I don't really care if my background is cut off, as long as you can see it, because it's a tile sort of picture.

Create a rectangle that is the size you want this background to be. When you create it, select the colors so that it has no line border. Once it is created on the layer you have for the background, select the rectangle, open the Color panel, and choose Bitmap from the Type drop down menu in that panel, then select the image from the selections that appear. The rectangle should fill with your tiling background image.

Can I set up an iCloud on iPad to get pictures off my dead iPhone 4S?

I had a Lifeproof case on my phone and dropped it into water on accident. I have an iCloud but its not set up totally and I am trying to get the 1,300 pictures off my phone and to put them onto my iPad. My phone hasn't been updated due to the mass amount of pictures not allowing me to update to iOS 7, while the iPad is fully updated. My phone is in rice and has been for the last few hours. It worked for about 5 min after dropping it but now isn't. Is there any hope/is this possible?

Sorry, but I'm not clear. Was iCloud set up on the phone prior to the accident?
P.S. the phone is now almost certainly shot for good - trying to turn it on only a few hours after the accident, while it was still wet, made sure of that.
