Getting the points on a sphere

Hi everybody,
I'm very new to java 3d so I'm sorry if there's a really simple answer to my question but I'm having no luck so far.
I need to work out the length between two points on a sphere and to do this I need to work out the angle between the two vectors, so the angle that the radii to the two points make .
What I would like to know is how, using a mouse to click on two points on the sphere, I can get the vectors that I need so I can work out the angles between them and then calulate the length of the arc on the sphere.
Any help at all will be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Toyin

This is a bit of a work-around, and i'mnot 100% sure it will work.  Go to Format Field, and check the box for "Display Currenct Symbol".  Then, click on the Customize button at the bottom of that window.  Change the Currency symbol from "$" to "%".  you'll also have to set the sybol to display behind the number.  That should work.

  • After I exported a PDF to a Word doc and downloaded it, I can't get the pointer tool to work.

After I exported a PDF to a Word doc and downloaded it, I can't get the pointer tool to work. When I click on the document text, the only tool is the "move" tool. I can't edit or select text. Please advise.

Version of Adobe: Adobe ExportPDF (not Pro)
    Operating system:  Windows 8.1
Steps I am taking: When the PDF file is selected and opened, I clicked on Tools menu on right side of the screen; then I clicked on Select PDF file; then under Convert To, I selected Microsoft Word (*.docx); then I hit the box below that; and clicked Convert. I then see the message that says it is Converting to Export PDF Online. Then I see a link below that, that says Download Converted File. This takes me online to Adobe Acrobat .com, where, I see the command, Export PDF, and see a blue box on the same screen that says Select PDF Files to Export. I click on the thumbnail of the file I want to export. This brings up, online, a screen containing the file I wanted to convert to Word. Then, on the same screen, I click on the icon on the right hand of the screen that says Download. then I click on the box on the bottom the screen that contains the Word document I had wanted to convert. This brings up the Word doc. in Compatibility Mode the latest Word version, which I am unfamiliar with and which has a Picture Tools tab that I cannot escape from and I cannot get any selection tool other that the Move pointer, and I cannot find the Select text pointer to select any text on the page. I don't want this Word version and do not know how to return to the old version of Word that I am familiar with.

ok i went from 25 points in my control panel to 195..ummm how? sure i posted suggestions but for the life of me, i dont' know which answer i gave was complete and utter s**t or made the person think to give me points LOL
is there a way where I can see which questions i replied to to see what was helpful or whatever?

i don't quite understand that statement? I am neither a student nor a consultant and i use this forum when I am not busy at work, it helps me look at problems and try to solve them.
what is this counter on a web site you are referring too??Be pleased to point out do not believe pointlessly pointing at you but rather pointlessly pointing at other pointless people pointedly using forum for other pointedly thrilled pointless people to pointlessly accumulate points.
Of course real question is, given the nature of the question, I observe you have not awarded any 5 points for helpful answers to this thread, or 10 points to a correct answer, and I am wondering if yu know how to do this. The reward points are mentined in the FAQ links.
As the original poster you have the opportunity to distribute 25 helpful points by the HELPFUL buttons, and 10 points via the CORRECT button (and the subtle irony is, given the question subject, you have so far not this despite marking question as answered ;-) )
Of course I am just having a little fun here ... though my joke does not transfer well to the written word and my humour.
These have been (flaming) debates on the pointlessness of the points system .... I think I'm marginally in favour of the metric but not strongly so (and I think any sophisticated changes to it would be not worth the candle). From my point of view it can be a (very) imperfect indicator of the credence of a poster (but should never be used alone); it can be a quick way of saying thankyou to some answers providing they are not materially misleading; and I can keep an eye on my points/post ratio as a review to check if I am answering questions effectively if it decreases over a period. However I do get rewards for rubbish (and even incorrect answers) while IMHO some great answers go unmarked.
Remember if you have 6 posts in a thread some people could even give you 5 points for that thread, and sometimes threads can be reviewed days later, causing a big increase.

  • Using Pen tool to create mask _ How do you get the points to stop connecting together?

I've masked the sky over the roof of a home. Started on the left side of the photo and moved over the house detailing it to the right side of the photo. When I try to create the mask by clicking Command /enter the points on the left and right side of the image connect which makes it impossible for the mask in the sky to work.

    Hi John,
Thanks. I figured it out so there’s no need.

  • Iphone: Didn't i get the point???...

So i'm just trying and playing around with xcode and setting up interface or something for an iphone. i Test it on the simulator and it works. But if i want to test it on my own iPhone it sais i have "no provisioned iphone" ... okies.
if i do a release-build and try to put it on my iPhone, it also doesn't work.
Do i, even to build stupid private software, need to apply this developer program for 99$???? or am i just too stupid to understand that whole thing?...
    greez and thanks, pf

I'm talking about even just looking at an overview at http://developer.apple.com/iphone/, which required two accounts along with personal details. Getting access there was an automated process, so no NDAs signed and mailed. To me it just looks like an obstacle that serves no purpose.
I can understand giving more details for distribution (and even, begrudingly, to load software on devices), but not this.
Clearly our outlooks are different. So be it.

What device is the AirPort Express using?
The Express can extend a wireless network created by another Apple AirPort Base Station, by receiving its wireless signal and re-transmitting it, thereby making your wireless coverage area greater than would be possible with only one AirPort Base Station.
Strictly speaking this is not "amplifying" this signal, nor is it possible to do so. The wireless transmitters are already using the maximum power permitted by regulatory agencies.

  • Get the slope (gradient - derivative) of a curve at a point

    hello
does anyone know if it is possible to get the slope (also might be known as gradient, derivative), of a curve at some point?
What i want to do, is draw a line that is vertical to a curve, so i need to have it's slope
    thanx

The easiest way to do it would to be to get the point right before the point you're looking at and the point right after it and just find the slope between the two
If you try this method, make sure they are double values. Simple ints will not give you the slope you want.
I made a program once that animated a rocket flying through the air. The curve was found using a parametric equation (x and y in terms of time). To point the rocket, I had to find the dirivitive (a little bit of calc 1). Then, I just made a function that calculated the slope of the curve at any given time (t). It worked great, but it may not be what you're looking for. If you do need to find the dirivitive, post some code or the formula you are using, I'm sure there are people on this board that can help you.

  • How do the point get applied to my ID?

I have assisted several people through the forums. If they return to the discussion thread and mark the post as answered (green star), wouldn't that mean I should be granted points for providing the information? (Especially if I were the only one that answered?)
    So, two primary questions...
1: How do I get the points associated to my Apple ID?
2: Who(or how) do I contact to ensure they are applied to my ID?

I just read some of your posts and you have no points? That is not a drought, that is just rude behaviour by others if you ask me, and fair play to you for giving so much time to the forum. Hang on in there till the users here get the idea that we are here for free and for fun and want to help where we can, and the points awarded should reflect one's usefulness, for want of a better word. Based on your points you are not useful, although your posts say otherwise, and having not visited the forum for a few months either side of the new look, which is very good btw, and recently made about 60 posts and received 2 helpfuls, I dont feel too valued either.
There is a little bit of dented ego in my thoughts, but basically I am a Machead and liked contributing technical help to this community rather than other forums because there was a sense that Levels gave credibility to one's answers, and the more i learned the more I was able to help, and my points reflected that.
Apparently that old points system was seriously flawed. Oh well! Personally I think the old way was a fun train that had momentum, whereas now the system has a built in brake. Maybe in the past some friends did bump up friends' tallies and people got points for worthless posts, but there was always a sense that knowledgeable users shined through, and their points reflected their knowledge. Now I think there are lots of very smart former Windows admins and power users floating around giving out amazing advice, but the miserly helpfuls is not giving them credibility.
Anyway, I am still more or less inclined to help out and where necesaary go searching for solutions for people who cant be bothered to even Google or search the archives here for solutions, but now i share my time in the help sections of other forums where there is no points system and you take info almost as pot luck because you dont know the knowledge level of posters, and as time is limited that means less time here.
Perhaps the mods could set up some sort of test for each section so people could pit their skills and show a level of expertise, and have that as the basis of levels. Then it doesnt really matter so much if people arent community spirited with their helpfuls.
Hopefully the atmosphere here will change for the better with some moderated tweakings to the points/credibility system.

  • Getting the path  of the java file your code is in

    Hey,
How can I get the full path of where my java file is on my computer in my java code?
Something like this is what I want:
    this.getFilePath();
    Thanks! / Ellen

I posted a utlity class to help you do this awhile back:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?thread=425748&forum=31&message=1895876
As far as the posters question of why you would want to do that, determining the correct location to read .properties files is a pretty decent reason. Another would be determining where a JAR file is located that needs to be updated with an auto-updater. And another is determining where to save data and/or log files. And another might be to do a checksum over various pieces of a JAR to make sure it hasn't been tampered with. And another....
I think you get the point. Because Java does not have a command line entry point (i.e. the name of an executable that was used to start it's process), this is pretty much the equivalent.
And for all of you that use relative pathnames (i.e. starting with ./), that is just waiting to bite you. You should NEVER make the assumption that the current path is where you think it is. Much safer to use the utility above so you know for sure where your class is installed.
    Cheers!

  • How to get the previous data?

    Hi,
I am monitoring a one moving point with coordinates (Xd,Yd). I want to get the two previous data so that I can calculate the point of origin as (Xo,Yo). I made a calculation that if i have three known points I will be able to get the point of origin. The variable data for the moving point (Xd,Yd) i showed using a slide bar. I want to see in the graph the moving point with the line connected to the point of origin at least.
But my problem is how can i get the two previous data correctly. Can somebody kindly teach me please.
    Thank you very much.

    Hi Bong,
I couldn't open your VI 'cause I'm still running LV7.11... anyway, if I understood what you're asking for, it is quite simple, you just need to drag down the shit register of the for loop as in the attached example SR.vi.
If you are not using a shit register to plot your data, then it depends on which display you use, but there are some tricks to get previous data... but in my opinion keeping a cluster with (X,Y) in a shift register is a good idea

  • What is the point of interfaces??? Confused!!!!

I have obviously missed something big out because I know that interfaces are very important but I don't get the point of them.
I underdstand an interface as a class which declared methods but does not implement them i.e.: public void hello(int num);.
Then you implement it in a class and you implement the hello method. Why don't you just implement the hello method in the class, why would you want to create an interface and then implement it.
I have obviously missed something here so could someone give me an example and quickly show me how to use an interface and explain why I would want to use one.
    Manny thanks,

I'm brand new to Java myself, and haven't yet written anything worthwhile, so take what I say with a grain of salt. BUT... my understanding of interfaces is as follows:
An interface allows you define a "way" in which something should be done without specifying "how" that thing should be done. Say you have a computer, and you want to write some software that controls how the cursor is moved around on the screen. So, you could write your software so that it watches for activity coming from the mouse, and then moves the cursor according to how the mouse was moved. Great, right? Not quite.
What happens when someone comes along and wants to install your software on a laptop, which uses a touchpad instead of a mouse? Well, unfortunately, you wrote your software so that it watched for mouse activity, and not touchpad activity, so the cursor doesn't respond correctly. (Yes this is a theoretical example, I understand that this sort of thing is really abstracted away by the operating system, but let's just pretend that we're writing operating system-level software.)
Now you can dig deep into your code and change it so that it works for both mice and touchpads, but this requires you to carefully check all the surrounding layers of code to make sure that you didn't screw anything else up. And then what happens if you find that someone has invented a light-pen that lets a stylus be used on the screen to move the mouse? You have to go through it all again!
If instead you had defined an interface to define how input devices should move the cursor, you might have an easier time of it. You can write a new class that handles touchpad or light-pen input and moves the cursor appropriately, and as long as it implements the interface that you wrote, your code can still take advantage of polymorphism -- because the way in which the input devices are manipulated was "officially" defined by the interface ahead of time. You still have to write the code to handle the touchpad or light-pen, but it plugs into your code more easily.
Now the question of when to use an interface and when to use an abstract class... I'm not totally clear on that yet. It seems that an interface is more general, whereas an abstract class is when you know that you're going to be writing a class that descends ("is a") from another class....

I'm trying to do something similar right now and coming to the same problems. I am trying to get the image from a Nikon DXM1200 camera that is mounted on a microscope. It has its own commands and capture card and is not playing well with the imaq stuff. I am using their SDK in an effort to get the images into LabVIEW.
As I said, I am having the same types of problems. I managed to wrap everying into a dll and into a .net assembley, but I have been unable to figure out a way to get it into LabVIEW. I can call either of these things from LabVIEW to make an image capture. But, I have been unable to transfer that image into LabVIEW. I also have been unable to get enough windowing information to get the information into LabVIEW.
I am not sure what Code Warrior is doing, but here is why I have been tracking this thread with great interest.
    Thanks for the thread,

You might want to look at http://www.hytekautomation.com/products.html. They have a Nikon interface for LabVIEW and since you already have the SDK, the issue mentioned on their site won't be a problem for you. It is for sure much more cost effective to pay them some money for that interface than trying to develop an interface yourself. The issues are quite involved and even if you knew quite some stuff about LabVIEW memory management and its internal C programming interface (and you can get quite some information from looking at the NI-IMAQ VIs too, eventhough they are anything but a nice example for good programming style), it is a work counting into weeks to get it done right.

so i answered someones question, it turned green and i got an email saying that i solved the question but i didnt get the points. Is this a glitch or something?

It wasn't a glitch, Joey.   Sometimes it might take two minutes, sometimes 30 minutes, as Neil said.   Much depends on what is going on in the background.   These forums serve millions of people nowadays and the activity going on is mind blowing.
