Getting to LOM ?

Hi,
I am trying to access a T2000 via a serial port. There is no monitor, keyboard etc. As far as I know, Solaris has been removed from the box.
When the machine starts up I get the following output. It asks for a username and password. I don't know what these are. Might anyone know how to re-set these?
There is one article at http://encypher.net/node/2551 , but it seems to need a keyboard, it mentions clicking on 'escape'.
thanks,
JM

  • New to Solaris...need help with netra T1

I want to learn a form of Unix and thought Solaris would be a good place to start. I purchased a netra T1 in a package deal with some other equipment and am having a learning experience. The box came with Solaris 9, currently running 5.8. I can get the LOM interface up...I can get to the lom> prompt and the $ prompt but can't get any commands suggested by the install manual to work. The Netra T1 has a CDROM so I am trying the boot cdrom command...following is the sequence of events:
    $boot cdrom
    boot: not found
Any suggestions or links to documentation is appreciated.
    Brittan

On the Netra you have three levels - lom (Lights out managment) is the 'bottom' level. From here you can control power to the box, etc
The next level is the OBP (Open Boot Prom) - This is the one you need to be at in order to do your boot cdrom
The top level is the OS running - if you've got a $ prompt, then chances are you're logged in as someone other than root on the server with the OS running.
To get to the OBP you'll want to be root. Assuming you know the root password type su -
supply the root password when prompted. Your $ will now change to a # this indicates you are now the superuser (root).
Now you can issue commands such as shutdown, halt, etc
shutdown -g0 -y -i0 (those are both zero) will tidy shutdown the box to the OBP
alternatively, if you're going to reinstall the OS anyway, you don't really care about a tidy shutdown and halt will do the trick
    you're now at the OBP prompt ( ok> )
from here you can type boot cdrom
cdrom is an alias setup on the system and should be set to point to the CDROM device on your Netra

  • Netra t1 105 can't boot

We recently acquired a used netra t1 105, but it's not doing us much good as it cannot boot. At the lom> prompt, typing "poweron" does indeed power it up, but that's it. It hangs at that point. It doesn't get any further...no memory checks, nothing. Please HELP! I'm pretty new to solaris/unix so I'm hoping someone can give me some insight...besides telling us there's no hope for the server.
    Thanks!

    Frank,
Thanks for you help so far. Here are the results from your numbered suggestions:
    1. I tried this with the same result....nothing. All I get is:
    LOM event: power on
The cursor drops to the next line, then just blinks forever.
Note: The server is getting power, the fans start up, the scsi disk
    starts up/spins, etc.
    2. lom> version gives the following output:
    LOM version: 2.1
    LOM checksum: 7CA3
LOM firmware build Aug 6 1999
    3. I didn't know "show" always outputs "fatal error"...good to know. Thanks. Just as in #1 above, doing:
    lom> poweroff
    lom> poweron
results in 'LOM event: power on' but nothing else. I've given it 10-15 minutes to boot, but no luck.
Yes, I do get the power LED as soon as poweron is typed.
When typing "environment", I get the following output:
    LEDs:
    faultled OFF
    Alarm1 = OFF
    Alarm2 = OFF
    Alarm3 = ON
    Fans:
    1 = OK standby
    2 = OK standby
    3 = OK standby
    PSUs:
    1 = OK in standby
Thanks for your help so far! Do you have any other ideas?
    Thanks,

  • Running OS X Client on Xserve

We have a need for the server class hardware in an Xserve, but no need for the extras that come with OS X server. As we continue to upgrade to new versions of OS X, we'd rather not pay for server upgrades since we don't use the features.
Assuming I can live without Server Monitor and other OS X server features, are there any pitfalls to running OS X client on an Xserve? Is it even possible, and would apple support it?
    Thanks!

Odd question. Can it be done now? Mostly yes. (Search the forums for various previous discussions; getting the LOM working is the usual "fun" here.) Given that the box arrives with Mac OS X Server, you will have that software. I don't know that you can get an Xserve box without Mac OS X Server. When you eventually get around to deciding if you want to upgrade to whatever follows Snow Leopard (and if you want to upgrade and not replace the box), only then will we have a shot of answering the question that you've asked.

  • Remote Desktop - Included w/Xserve

    Hello Everyone,
Probably a very simple question. Is Remote Desktop included with Xserves running 10.6?
I have an Xserve in the server room running 10.6 and need to connect to it from my Mac in my office. My Mac is running 10.6 client.
Do I have to buy Remote Desktop or is it included? How do I get this going?
    Thanks.

To clarify what Tony has pointed to, if you're not familiar with Apple-speak...
[Download|http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/server admintools1062.html] and install the Server Admin tools on the Mac OS X client, and [get the LOM configured|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773] on the Xserve box.
Then, as Tony states, launch Server Admin, enter the host and password, and share the Xserve server screen. You can do that via the VNC path Tony mentions, or (once you have Screen Sharing launched from Server Admin) you can control-click on the Screen Sharing icon, select Options, and select "Keep in Dock" to easily give yourself a short-cut to the tool.

  • How do I get Chapter 1 and Appendix A labels on my LOM page?

My reference page looks like this:
    Chapter <$chapnum>.    <$paratext>
                   Revised:        <Emphasis><$markertext>
                   Doc ID:         <Emphasis><$markertext>
The resulting body page looks like this:
    Chapter 1.    Sample Chapter Title
                   Revised:        November 2009
                   Doc ID:         1234
    Chapter A.    Sample Appendix Title
                   Revised:        November 2009
                   Doc IDr:         1235
Is there some way to get the appendix to display as Appendix A. Sample Appendix Title?  Is there a way to have conditional statements on the reference page perhaps?  Something like "If $chapnum is alpha, Appendix, else Chapter"?  I've hunted but come up empty.  There is an example in FrameMaker Complete Reference showing the "Chapter <$chapnum>" part, but it doesn't cover the Appendix case or conditional statements. Seems like what I'm trying to do is a common-enough thing that there'd be a solution out there.
    Thanks for you help,
    Dave

    Thanks Arnis,
I like your first suggestion and I already do have different para tags on the titles.  I just can't seem to figure out how to get the chapter and appendix tag into the LOM page correctly.  Currently, the Chapter line is set to Header/Footer $1LOM.
I'm imagining I need two sets of lines in my reference page:
    Chapter <$chapnum>.    <$paratext>
                   Revised:        <Emphasis><$markertext>
                   Doc ID:         <Emphasis><$markertext>
    Appendix <$chapnum>.    <$paratext>
                   Revised:        <Emphasis><$markertext>
                   Doc ID:         <Emphasis><$markertext>
and then somehow set the para tag on the Chapter line to the ChapterTitle tag (and appendix to appendixtitle), but my attempts at this make a mess.  What am I missing?  How do I associate the ChapterTitle tag correctly?  Is there something like ChapterTitleLOM needed?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Can't get LOM setup

Please, do not link me to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2773, which is everyone's default reply to LOM issues.
I'm trying to get LOM setup on my server. And here are the issues I've run in to. Up front, the server is already setup, so using Setup Assistant is out.
When I use Server Monitor on the XServe itself, it connects fine to 127.0.0.1 (as expected). But of course, I want to connect to it via the IP. However, I'm not sure what the LOM was originally set to.
The server has an ip of 10.0.0.20. And I want the LOM to be 10.0.0.21. Yes, 10.0.0.21 is free for use.
I used "ipmitool lan set 1 ipaddr 10.0.0.21". And then I used Server Monitor to match those settings. And I verified the user settings with "ipmitool user list 1"
Now, if I try to use Server Monitor from the XServe for 127.0.0.1 it connects fine. For 10.0.0.21 it says "Incorrect user name or password".
However, I know the username and password I entered are correct. And if I look at the log it says "Failed to connect to server".
If I add the server with a completely made up username and password the same error occurs in the log ("Failed to connect to server".
If I add the server with a completely made up IP, such as 10.0.0.90, the same error occurs in the log ("Failed to connect to server").
So from the log it is not possible to tell whether their is an actual problem communicating to the LOM ip address or whether it is actually a username and password problem.
I also used ipmitool to manually set the user and password just in case Server Monitor was being wonky and not correctly setting them.
What steps might I be over looking?
What should I try trouble shooting next?

    MrHoffman,
I am trying to access LOM on the Xserve from my Laptop. I'm not sure why I'd ever want to connect from the Xserve to its own LOM, especially when I could just connect via local 127.0.0.1.
Both machines are behind the same point of the network. The server is 10.0.0.20 with a lom address of 10.0.0.21. And my laptop is 10.0.0.54.
Here are the problems I've had with HT2773...
1.) Server Assistant is for when setting up the machine.
2.) Server Monitor - I've repeatedly tried to setup LOM using this, but to no avail. When I try to connect from my laptop it always says ""Failed to connect to server" in either of the following scenarios...
Scenario 1: When given the right IP address but wrong username and password
Scenario 2: When given the wrong IP address and right username and password
So trouble shooting if it is a connection or a user problem is difficult.
3.) I tried using ipmitool, but now it is giving the two errors I listed previously...
"ipmitool lan print" gives the error: "Channel 14 is not LAN"
"ipmitool user list" gives the error: "Command failed with error 0xFFFEF9CC
These errors only appeared after I used ipmitool to create a new user and to assign the LOM ip address.

  • Can't make LOM working more than 20 seconds after startup

    Hi.
This bottle in the sea because I don't succeed to make LOM working.
    The story is the following.
I have 5 Xserve Intel involved in a Xsan installation. Port 1 is used for public LAN, port 2 for private LAN, as usual.
I've configured the LOM settings for port 1 locally with Server Monitor with another IP in the public LAN.
Then I've added the Xserve in the Server Monitor of an iMac used for the administration of the SAN.
The messages I get are a waiting for an answer of the Xserve or the fact that the information have not been updated... for a long time. All the Xserve present the same problem. At this moment, it's not possible to ping the LOM Port 1.
If I add the server locally in its own Server Monitor with its LOM IP, it doesn't work either but if I try "127.0.0.1", I get the hardware informations as expected.
I've tried to shutdown a Xserve, unplug the power cords, wait one minute, plug the power cords, start it but it doesn't fix the problem. Perhaps I should have unplug the other cables ?
    Finally, I've noticed that :
    - when the Xserve is shut down, I can ping the LOM Port 1
    - during the start up of the Xserve, the iMac gets its hardware informations for a couple of seconds
    - at the moment when the login window is visible in ARD, the LOM Port 1 is no longer ping-able
    - the Server Monitor on the iMac says that the connection with the Xserve has been lost.
That is to say that the iMac receives the hardware informations of the Xserve during 20 seconds after their startup, not more
I've tried to use the command sudo IPMITool lan print 1 and it seems that the configuration is correct.
I have also another problem with Server Monitor. If I try locally (with the 127.0.0.1 address) to edit notifications, I don't succeed to complete the "To" field whereas I can comlete the "From" field. Is there a known problem with the GUI here or do I have to change my glasses ?
Any idea is welcome now ! I'm lost.
    All the best.

    Hi.
I've investigated the problem. It's simple but I 've found no solution at the moment.
The problem appears when the Xserve is connected to the Cisco Catalyst 3750G switch, can't be reproduced when the Xserve is in direct attachement with my Mac.
All the ports of this switch have been set to "Desktop" with the Web interface (after Express Setup) and the negociation (speed/duplex) is auto by default.
When the Ethernet negociation setting on the Xserve is "Automatic", the Xserve doesn't fully boot. When it is started, you have to unplug and plug the Ethernet cable so the startup is completed. Very strange.
When the Ethernet negociation setting on the Xserve is manually fixed to 1000-FD, the Xserve starts up without problem. When the Xserve is stopped, the LOM Port in pingable. When it starts a little, the LOM Port is still pingable but at the moment I think the manual setting is applied, the LOM Port is no longer pingable. This is the key of the problem.
So I tried to fix the speed/duplex in the switch and leave the Xserve on "Automatic". The story is the same: the LOM Port is desactivated after a few seconds of startup.
When the Xserve is on "Automatic" and plugged directly to my Mac, the problem doesn't exist.
The problem does not exist with the Mac Pro leaved on "Automatic".
So the problem is between the Xserve Intel and the Cisco Switch. Perhaps something to do with its settings but I do not speak "Cisco" regularly
The Cisco has product ID WS-C3750G-48TS and the Software is 12.2(25)SEE3.
I made the same test with the "private" Cisco switch product ID WS-C3750G-24T and the problem is the same.
For the moment, I leave the Xserve with the speed/duplex fixed because I prefer that the machines boot, rather than being able to consult LOM remotely when they are hanged (it works locally on 127.0.0.1 on each Xserve started).
Next step would be to play with setting the spanning tree "portfast" on the Cisco ; if it lets the Xserve to be set on "Automatic", perhaps it will solve the LOM problem and by the way the edit notification problem.
    All the best !

  • Does the Server Monitor work on PowerPC based machine (w/o LOM)?

I tried using the Server Monitor locally on a PowerPC G4 machine which has 10.5.1 server installed. I always get a "Failed to connect to server" error message, except if I try 127.0.0.1 with the original local admin, then I would get a "User and or Password" error.
Strangely, the username of the admin is M999, but if i type in "M999" as username, I would still get a "Failed to connect to server" error, while if I use "m999" as username, I get a user name password error. Either way, I couldn't use Server Monitor.
So I am wondering whether Server Monitor support machines w/o LOM at all? Is there an trick I should know about?
    Thanks
    Kenneth

    Hi
There is no trick you need to know. Its really quite simple, Server Monitor only works with XServes. Apple added LOM capability when they rolled out the Intel XServe.

  • No luck with LOM

I am having no luck with lights out management. I'm running on the new Xserve line. I configured LOM in the Server Monitor tool. I gave the LOM a static IP based on the ethernet ID it gave. I then opened up server monitor on my Mac Pro and plugged in the IP, user and pass and am just getting waiting for results. The Xserve is plugged in on ethernet port 1 so I set up LOM on port 1. Any ideas?

  • Netra T1 105 LOM & OBP

Hi, I bought a Netra T1 105 recently. I connected the LOM port (serial port A) to another Solaris 10 (x86) machine via a null modem cable and am able to see the boot messages and the lom propmpt too. The funny thing is the keyboard is neither responding at the lom prompt nor am I able to send a break signal to fall back to the OK prompt. How do I get my keyboard to tell LOM to drop to OBP? Please let me know.

    1. What type of cable are you using?
    2. Are you connected to the serial A or B?
The cable that I use is a flat one, and I'm pretty sure that the usual straight thru ethernet or crossover cables do not work.

  • Netra T1 105, Unresponsive after installing LOM 2.0

I recently purchased a used Netra T1 105, which is running SunOS 5.9. After purchasing the server, I attempted to install the "Lights Out Management 2.0" software.
I then proceeded to attempt to upgrade the LOM firmware, by running "lom -G default". However, running the command produced the output "Image Checksum", then locked the system up. At which point, the system no longer responded via the network, or via console.
After waiting a while, hoping that it would prompt me to confirm the firmware update, I decided to power-cycle the server. (I was unable to escape to LOM at the console.) After the power-cycle, the console no longer responds, nor outputs anything. I am also unable to access the system via network, which I suspect may be caused by the system wanting to perform an fsck.
Any ideas on what could be wrong, and how to fix it? Thank You!

On second read Bill i see that as well.
This is going to be unrelated but your boot-device looks a bit strange as well. You are referencing different slices on the same disk, and then referencing the disk itself and then net.
    boot-device=disk:b disk:a disk net
You would be ok with referencing disk and then net if the server is not mirrored. If the system is mirrored then you would want to reference that disk as well.
    either :boot-device=disk net
    or: boot-device=disk disk<number> net
But the next time it does it, you could try trying sync and trying to create a crash file. Once you have the crash files you can get these analysed.
As well as this pass the server through diagnostics 3 or 4 times and check the console outputs fro details.

  • How Do I Disable Lights Out Management (LOM)?

I was happily running 10.5 Server yesterday on my Intel XServe. The outside world was able to see my web server just fine.
I updated to 10.6 Server late last night and now my http service is not visible to the outside world (or local LAN for that matter).
Suspecting it has something to do with Lights Out Management (LOM).
How do I get LOM to turn loose of the local IP address of the ethernet interface?

What makes you think the LOM has anything to do with this?
There are about two million other things I'd check before I'd worry about the LOM. In fact I can't even think how the LOM could have have effect.
For a start have you verified the services are running? What do the logs say? Can you hit the web service from the machine itself? What about other services that should be running on the machine?
Have you checked the network configuration to make sure the server's IP address hasn't changed, that the default route is set correctly?
Then there are external factors to consider - maybe coincidences that occurred around the same time as your upgrade and may be masking the problem. Have you checked that your port forwarding is set correctly in your router? Are you sure your ISP hasn't started blocking port 80 traffic?

  • LOM (Lights Out Management) v/ VPN Connection

The only time I can access LOM via the Server Monitor tool is when plugged directly into the LAN where my Intel servers live.
If I attempt to use Server Monitor while connected via VPN to my office, it doesn't work. Server Monitor indicates that there is "No response..." since last time I connected in my office.
    Any thoughts?
Remote Access 3.0 indicates LOM Status:Not Configured - however, again, on the LAN it works just fine.
    Thanks,
    Phillip

Just want to add that I have had this problem for Months and I only just found the extremely simple tip that worked where everything else had failed.
Follow all of the steps provided elsewhere.. Configure in Server Monitor via "Configure Local Machine:, two different IPs from the main address and save.
    (i.e http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304896)
What actually made this work is to then Shutdown the server after saving. Unplug it (or both power supplies) for about 30 seconds
    Plug in and power on.
I can assure you this works if all the config steps are followed.
Literally 6 months I have been trying to get this to work and tried just about everything, but It turns out is just the enet contoller that needs to be reset by powering off and on.
I am just shocked that this simple tip is not mentioned in any of the Apple kbase articels or documentation that I could find
