Getting USB on an Ultra 2 workstation?

Is there any way to get USB ports on an old Ultra 2 workstation? i.e. have any SBUS to USB interface cards been made that I might have a chance to get hold of? If not, might the way SBUS -> PCMCIA (via Sun's 501-2367 / X1030A card) -> any cheap ehci pcmcia usb card prove to be successful? I'm currently running Solaris 8, but might upgrade to 10 if necessary.

Hello,
PCMCIA - USB cards for notebooks are available for a dime a dozen..
While there is a vanishing demand for USB cards for notebooks, because USB 2.0 is now already integrated, you have keep in mind that these cards are not really PCMCIA but CARDBUS 32-bit.
The controller on the S-Bus to PCMCIA adapter doesn't support CARDBUS. If you can locate a non-CARDBUS card with USB 1.1, some slow devices (keyboard, mouse and your kits) might work.
If the PCMCIA card has a golden shield on the upper side of the connector it requires CARDBUS.
I don't know if the drivers for the PCMCIA Adapter (501-2367, X1030) work with later versions of Solaris.
Any low end PCI based Sun (eg. U5/10, Blade 100/150, NetraAX1105-500, etc) can be upgraded with an inexpensive PCI-USB 2.0 card. The integrated USB is only 1.1 not 2.0.
Btw. don't assign Duke Stars if you don't reward them. haroldb still needs them to get his silver star...

  • Get USB device attached to this computer has malfunctioned error message

Hi All, my first post. iPod was working fine and been synching without issue for 2 years. I have recently had a couple of intermittent problems where it gets stuck playing and will not respond to clicking on wheel. However, seemed to be over that but now get USB error when I plug it into PC. ie PC is not recognising the hardware. Have done 4 of the 5 R's (does not register in iTunes so cannot restore). Have read other articles with interest but not seem anything quite the same.
I have been into Device Manager via the USB troubleshooter and tried to force it to load drivers from the installation CD but thinks it does not need any. Feels like I have plugged a potato into the USB socket rather than an IPOD. Got a suspicion that the iPod itself is corrupt and not being recognised by Windows.
Got same result on another PC with iTunes installed.
    Any ideas ?

Yep - same error messages - looks like it can't find drivers but when I try and get it to search for them on installation disk it says it can't find anything more appropriate than current settings (which btw says does not need any drivers !).
Great so a few of us have the same issue. Does anyone have an answer ? Is there anyway of getting these questions to Apple or did they cut their support costs by replacing tech support with discussion groups.

  • Thinkpad 8 USB 3.0 port = getting USB 2.0 speeds

I have (2) Thinkpad 8 devices (one for work and one for home) and both are NOT getting USB 3.0 connectivity when connected to a USB 3.0 device.
under device info (in the Charms menu), it says
"device can perform faster when connected to USB 3.0".
That means for whatever reason, the system is NOT seeing a USB 3.0 connected and is dumbing the speed down to USB 2.0.  That is a big big big deal.  At least for me.
I'm not sure what the solve is here, but I have tried reinstalling windows (fail), downloading drivers from the Intel site (failed to work for me) and have tried uninstalling the USB drivers and having windows reinstall the drivers (failed for me).
I looked at the USB tree viewer and it shows my device's bus speed is USB 2.0 (the device itself is certified USB 3.0 and I have checked the device in another laptop with USB 3.0 and it works like it should).
I am UNABLE to get speeds about 30 - 35 mb/s which is the upper limit of the USB 2.0 spec.
Is this a warranty issue?  I think so.
    Can anyone from Lenovo help???

    Mark,
Can you kindly take a look at my post here:
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-slate-tablets/Thinkpad-8-USB-3-0-port-getting-USB-2-0-speeds/t...
This is a very big discovery and I think it affects ALL TP8 owners.  I have confirmed with at least ONE more person in another forum that they too are NOT seeing any USB 3.0 connectivity.  I own two of these TP8s and I am not happy that the tablets do not support USB 3.0 straight out of the box.  It appears to be a hardware issue (or maybe it's just firmware).  I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times but to no avail.  The drivers appear to be correct.  It just will NOT connect at USB 3.0 speeds due to the HOST (i.e. the tablet) not supporting USB 3.0

  • How do you get USB debugging for AIR iOS working?

How do you get USB debugging for AIR iOS working?
    Here is my current configuration:
    Flash Builder 4.6
Flex 4.6.0 (build 23201) with AIR 3.3 Beta and Flash 11.3 Beta playerglobal.swc (both merged in to the current Flex build)
    Flex 4.6 release: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/flex-sdk-download.html
    AIR 11.3 Beta: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplatformruntimes/air3-3/
    Flash Player 11.3 Beta: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer11-3.html
I read through the Flash Player 11.3 and AIR 3.3 release notes (http://labsdownload.adobe.com/pub/labs/flashplatformruntimes/shared/air3-3_flashplayer11-3 _p1_releasenotes.pdf) and this is all that is stated:
USB debugging for AIR iOS iOS developer can now connect directly? to the desktop via USB to debug mobile applications.
Every other feature seems to have a description of how to accomplish it other than USB debugging for AIR iOS.
    Anyone else get this working?
The main reason I want to get this working is because our IT department is very strict on our firewalls and it is relatively hard to open the required ports to debug on our own devices through the network.

I've found one way of doing it using command-line on Windows.  I'm sure someone will make it easier by building it into something like a FlashDevelop template soon.
    Steps are...
    1. Add a "-listen 7936" param to the packager.  Something like, "adt -package -target -debug-interpreter .... -listen 7936". Install IPA on device.
    2. Find out the handle of your iOS device by running "lib\aot\idb\idb -devices".  In my case it is "2". Will look something like...
    List of attached devices
    Handle    UUID
        2    {your UUID here}
    3. Forward the local_port to the remote_port for the device_handle.  Something like "lib\aot\idb\idb -forward 7936 7936 2".
    4. Start Flash Debugger in another command prompt from your FlexSDK directory.  Something like "flexsdk\bin\fdb -p 7936".
    5. Run your app.
    6. Type the "(fdb) run" command in the debug command line.
    7. May need to type "(fdb) continue".
    Hope that helps.

You should just be able to erase it using Disk Utiilty. I did with my 8Gb.
If not I have a USB deep format tool, but it only works with Windows: http://tinyurl.com/mwor6s9
You can download that and unzip it, then run it on a PC to fully erase and format the flash drive. Format it in FAT, and then the Mac will read and mount it so you cna once again format it with HFS extended for Mac use.

  • Getting files from USB My Passport Ultra onto new computer

I was using my My Passport Ultra USB on my older computer that crashed (Vista). Now I have a new computer (8.1) and I need to connect it and get all my music files onto my new computer without losing anything. How do I do it?Thanks for any help

    Hi.
    Welcome to the WD Community.
Depending on how you put the files on the drive, there are different ways to copy the information to the new system.
If you used the WD Smartware backup software to backup your files, you will need to use the same software to restore the files to the new computer.
If it was with the WD Smartware, please see the page 49 of the user manual for detailed information on how to retrieve your files.

  • Help! I can't get USB to work

Ok at first I was having problems with running any 3d games.  I still have this problem.  What it does is it totally freezes the system during the middle of play at random spots.  Then I decided what the heck I guess I need to get all the new drivers and stuff.  So I got everything installed from the Live Update 2 except for the Bios update and the USB update.  My OS is Windows XP so I don't have any choice but getting that USB update via LU2.  So I tried installing that update and during the install when it tries to find an install wizard for the USB it freezes the machine and disables all usb divices.  No usb devices work after I did this install.I've tried installing it 4 times.  I get the same result each time.  I don't care how I can do it I just want my usb back up.  Can somebody help me?
Oh and I think that the 3d game prob is that I need to get an actual AGP card so that it doesn't overheat the graphics chip and perhaps a better heatsync for the Pentium 4 2.26 Ghz chip.

Try this  driver, it is from intel.
The intel VGA integrated in the 845G chipset is known to be less than perfict (or actually very poor).
There was an article about how it has incompatabilities with games.
Even a Gf2 MX200 is stronger than it so practicly any card you would but is stronger.

  • I need a way to get usb thumb-drive securely recognized as a apple keyboard

I posted this question over at Developer Discussions also, just to get more eyes on it, not to be disruptive.
So, I would like to utilize a maximum-length Admin. password (255 characters?) without having to manually type it in each time I login, install/update software, or for any other reason. The perfect situation would be some type of script or software installation onto a USB pen drive (2 gig sony)which is inserted into the macbook (via usb) when the Leopard Login screen appears. It logs me in, then, afterwards, it creates a clickable icon on the desktop that achieves the same goal (entering a long admin password securely). And all of the above is achieved using the built-in security of Keychain access, without having to continuously mount and unmount the drive.
Searching google produces many expensive products that do not fit: Securikey, omnikey, smart cards, tokends, and on and on. They seem to have figured this out at microsoft - not that it matters much, except that it appears to be possible.
One problem is that a USB thumb drive is not mounted until after login, it seems, but, I plugged in a friend's usb apple keyboard from the year 2000 and was able to type in my password at login. And, an email reply elsewhere suggested writing a daemon (that constantly runs in the background of the operating system) that could recognize the drive and accept a script from it that inputs the password and executes the 'enter' command.
I don't know how to write daemons yet, but I can stumble around a bit with bash and applescripts, and I can copy any Xcode project out of a book and make it run properly. I'm a beginner.
This project might create security issues for my operating system, but I'm really not concerned about that because this is a computer I don't rely on and can safely perform experiments on. And I would like to use this as an opportunity to learn - so I'm going to give it a whirl anyway - unless someone has already accomplished something similar. In that case, why reinvent the wheel and plug it into the wall, eh?
Basically I am asking for help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need to get deep into programming to do much of this.
launchd, the background process that's responsible for launching most of the background processes on your machine, has the ability to launch a script based on disk mount events.
    StartOnMount <boolean>
This optional key causes the job to be started every time a filesystem is
    mounted.
So you could create a LaunchDaemon script that watches for a disk mount. When a disk is inserted your script is fired off. You'd need to perform some verification to ensure the disk is, indeed, your USB stick and not some other device, then it can trigger the rest of the login process. Off hand I'd look to osascript to run an AppleScript-based keystroke, but there may be other ways, too.
One big question relates to securing your password. Clearly you can't store it in the script, so you'd have to read it from somewhere. You also can't store it on the USB stick unless you somehow encrypt it (otherwise someone can just look at the files on the USB stick and get your password), but AppleScript can use the keychain, too, although I'm not sure what keys would be available prior to login, so it requires some experimentation.

  • I cannot get usb port to be recognized by my PC O/S Vista. I have only did a sync once I have had it a year. I have cleaned my computer and still cannot snyc it.

Please help me I am getting whatever is attached to usb port is not recognized and there are no drivers. I thought maybe I should go thru my computer and clean out any excess. Computer PC and O/S Vista Home Premium.  When I installed apple to set up sync it worked right away. As I am a PC person should I uninstall and then reinstall all of the software, iTunes updated & sync iPod. Thank you in advance for any help any of you can give me.

    You said:
"whatever is attached to usb port is not recognized and there are no drivers."
This imples that your computer does not see any device, not just the iPod when it is connected ot a USB port.  This points to a major problem with Windows or a hardware problem. Use the WIndow's troubleshooting to get the USB ports to work.

  • Not Getting USB 2.0 on MS-7125

    I have MS-7125 (Bios 1.D) that I'm using an athlon 4000 + processor with.
I thought all my USB ports were supposed to be USB 2.0 but whenever I connect
a USB 2.0 device to any of the ports I get a windows alert saying "this device can perform
faster. click here to see ports". When I click the alert it shows me all the ports but says
that none of them are high speed?? How do enable USB 2.0 on this Mobo???
    TIA,
    Prof

Check to see if a wire from the front usb ports is connected to pin 10 on the motherboard connector.  This pin location should not have anything connected to it.
What operating system are you using?  You need XP SP1 for usb 2.0.
If the connector is OK or not used and the OS is good, then try uninstalling all of the usb devices listed in the device manager.  Reboot the system and let windows find and reinstall the correct usb drivers.

Try this.I think your device is loosly connected.Which USB device are you using??Also you must install THE DRIVER OF YOUR USB DEVICE.

  • Cannot Get USB Slot to Work

    I have a 2011 MacBook Pro.
All I remember doing was accidently unplugging my Wacom 4 Drawing tablet.
(I am really thinking about getting one of those Wireless ones... hopefully that's provide a bit more comfort.)
Anyways.  I go to plug it back in as I have always done.
Then a flash message popped up and the the system stopped allowing me to use the USB port.
The other port works just fine.
I can switch to bootcamp and then both USBs work again.
(I only use bootcamp if I want to play a game that requires Windows to run it.  Otherwise I prefer my Mac Side for things like drawing, editing, animating, etc.)
I haven't a clue where to navigate to.
My first choice was system preferences.  But there isn't even a hardware option.
    Any clues would be great.

After re-installing XP Home SP2 and downloading all the updates & Drivers from here I cannot get my USB port to work properly, if I have more than one peripheral plugged in it says "Bandwidth Exceeded".
I have a Behringer BCD2000 which is a souncard/midi controler for DJ mixing, it worked fine before i reinstalled windows, now it clicks and pops when playing tunes, also the ASIO doesn't work when I run Traktor (Dj software) and the program freezes. Any other external sound card wont work either. I've been all through the device manager no conflicts apart from an ! over Serial under hidden devices.
I'm lost, is my only option buying a PCMCIA sound card, it worked fine before so surely there is a software solution to this?
If anyone can help I'd be most appreciative.

  • Can't get usb fax modem to work

I have one of those small white apple phone/fax usb connectors, and I am trying to send a fax of a word doc but I can't get the process to work.
It reports that there is no dial tone yet it is connected correctly from the computer to my phone line.
I recall being able to do this a couple of years ago, but now I can't figure it out.
Could there be a compatibility problem with the OS?
I used it before with Tiger and now I am on Snow Leopard.
Is there some setup that I need to do before using it?
When I plug it in, it reports that there is a new network interface detected called external modem and it needs to be set up in network preferences.
In the setup, it asks for a phone number an account name and a password, but which account is it referring to? My computer, my ISP, my network router?
It then disconnects and reports that there is no dial tone and to try connecting the phone line again, but it is connected and is working.
    Thanks for any advice

    Thanks.
It does appear correctly, and everything seems ok, but it doesn't work.
I've been reading around, and apparently the apple usb fax modem doesn't work with digital phone lines.
The last time I used it, in 2007-08, we had an analogue phone line but now we have a digital line as part of the Virgin media phone, cable and broadband service.
Unless someone has had positive results getting it to connect to a digital phone line, I have to conclude, sadly, that it is now obsolete hardware.
I can't even find a comparable item on the apple store website anymore, so they must know that it doesn't work with digital phone lines and stopped selling it.
