Need some pointers getting video from iPhone 4S to iMovie09

Based on my research in this forum either of these methods should work, but they're not working for me. If you have any advice on debugging the problem it would be greatly appreciated!
I took video with the 4S and see that it's in the Camera Roll.
First problem: I plug the 4S into my MacBook, open iMovie, and click on the camera icon. The 4S is not recognized - the only camera that appears is "Built-in iSight".
Second problem: importing via iPhoto. So next I connect the phone, open iPhoto, and import the video. Within iPhoto it clearly shows up as a new event and as last import. I can play it there. Now when I open iMovie, in the Event Library I see "iPhoto Videos" but when I click on it I'm told that there are no matching videos. The "show" is set to all clips. So there is some sort of mismatch between where iPhoto is putting the video and where iMovie expects it. Any thoughts on what settings I can check? I've been looking around with no success.
Right now the only way I can use 4S video in iM is to use a different transfer mechanism (i use Nikon Transfer) to get the .mov file onto my machine, then import this file. Not the ideal scenario! I've also found that with vertical video I have to import as full original size, otherwise the video comes in as a stretched horizontal format.

If the photos/videos have not been deleted from your iPhone, try using the Image Capture application for the import to see if there is any difference.

I upgraded to 5.1 and iCloud, photostream etc, but am finding it much more complicated than the previous way I sync'd my iPhone.
I used to plug in my phone, press Sync, all my photos would zoom from my Camera Roll to iPhoto, including any videos I had taken on my iPhone, then it would ask me if I wanted to delete the contents of my Camera Roll. Apart from the fact that I would have liked to 'protect' a few photos before deleting them all, this worked well.
I don't go on my MacBook every day, so I quite often build up quite a few photos on my iPhone.
Now, only my photos sync, they don't do it quickly when I press sync, but slowly and in bits n bobs. The videos don't sync and I am not asked if I want to delete photos after they have been synced.
Can anyone help?

And now every time I plug my USB to my iphone in, it comes up for about a minute in iPhoto, then disappears and I can't see it in Devices at all.
I am sorry that I can't understand this, but I thought the point of Apple was that it was based on an intuitive system. It used to be, because (as you can tell!) I am not techy, and yet it all worked perfectly and I have been yelling about it from the rooftops since 2003.
But since upgrading to 10.7 and 5.1, iCloud and all the rest of it, everything has just gone to xxx. I am spending half my life fiddling around, trying to understand how the wretched system works and I am so fed up.
My Word/Excel etc don't work any more, my iPhoto has gone to **** and I can't make my iPhone sync with my computer any more. I don't really understand the benefits of photostream and I am so hacked off with the whole thing that I feel like opting out altogether and writing on a wax tablet.
I would be embarrassed, but I know that I am not alone. There are loads of people saying the same thing. You techies might think it is pathetic, but computers are meant to be for everyone, busy mums included.

How to get videos from iphone 5 onto disc

I have videos that I would like to put onto a disc and share with my family out of state, but I am not sure how to go about doing so. Any suggestions? I do not have a Mac. Is it possible to get the videos emailed to myself, save to my computer, and upload into some service that can burn for me? like Walgreens?

now will this also work if the songs have not been purchased. most of them where downloaded of copyed off a cd.

Hej, we have a Iphone 4S which we user to the record video with, we have sold our video cam, we have now a film in 38 min which we have committed in iphone, but we cannot achieve the end to our macbook, iPhoto make and error every time we start the transferring this. What is the error what we can do?

This did not helped. When I conect my IPhone to IPhoto and try to download, the videos did ot appeared, it's only the pictures.
Any other ideas?

Getting movies (not just video) from iPhone 3GS to Mac

I did the following in order (question at end)
captured video using iPhone 3GS
synced video from iPhone to iPhoto on Mac
imported iPhoto video to iMovie
created movie in iMovie
used "Share" feature in iMovie to share the movie in iTunes (so I could play on Apple TV)
synced movie back to iPhone
deleted movie from Mac (where iTunes was accessing it)
Now, the movie content only resides on my iPhone...can I get it back from the iPhone onto my Mac (so I can eventually get it back into iTunes)?

Thanks to Grognard for suggesting this:
Step one: turn off and on your iPhone.
Step Two : launch iTunes and iPhoto
Step three : connect the iPhone to the computer
Then importation will be possible.
Clearly this still seems to be a glitch -- these kinds of work-arounds are a huge pain. Hope an update will solve the problem.

I haven't launched iMovie in a while, and I've used iPhoto to import many videos from my iPhone's Camera Roll since the last time I launched and used iMovie.
iMovie prompted me to create/update the thumbnails for my iPhoto videos, along with indicating no iPhoto videos will be available with iMovie until this is completed.
Not sure how to do this manually, but this may be your problem.

Ok I checked and unchecked the playback via camera yesterday and I got black screen both times.
I could delete the imovie prefs when I go over there today.
I'll try another FW cable but it worked perfectly for importing but what the heck I've got one I'll try it.
Yes camera was set to play and not record.
Plenty of free space -- 131 GB.
I'm pretty sure it's in NTSC DV format, but it's someone else's computer so it could have been changed by someone screwin' around not knowing what they're doing making changes.

Task: Wanting to take video from my iPhone 5 into iMovie HD Version 6.0.3 to do some editing, trimming, transitions, etc. I have done this on many occasions but have NEVER been able to share/export the finished product with any kind of quality result. I want to upload to youtube and it never looks very good. Looks "ok" if just viewed as is, but if you click on full-screen it does not look good.
I have never liked any of the other newer versions of iMovie - old dog new tricks problem. I have versions 9.0,9 and 10.0.3 and maybe I need to use one of those to solve the problem. If so would someone please tell me should I export as .mov or .mp4 and what exact settings to use.
If I can get good quality using iMovie 6.0.3 then would someone please tell me should I export as .mov or .mp4 and what exact settings to use.
It seems like this should be such a simple process but for the life of me I can't figure out how to make it so. I see many other videos that I know have been taken on people's phones and edited and they look great - even when shown in full screen.

Sync video from iPhone 4 to iTunes..?

I've just got my new iPhone 4 (upgraded from iPhone 2G) and it's superb!
I recorded my first video today but for the life of me I can't seem to get it to sync into iTunes. Everything else works fine.
I'm quite sure I'm missing something blindingly obvious here but does anyone have any pointers?

your computer, such as iPhoto on a Mac.
Upload photos and videos to your computer: Connect iPhone to your computer.
Â Mac: Select the photos and videos you want and click the Import or Download
button in iPhoto or other supported photo application on your computer.
Â PC: Follow the instructions that came with your photo application.
If you delete the photos and videos from iPhone when you upload them to your
computer, they’re removed from the Camera Roll album. You can use the iTunes
Photos settings pane to sync photos and videos (videos can be sync with Macs only)

I received a video from iPhone in an email but iPad won't play it? Any way to get it to play on iPad.

I appreciate what you are both saying -- but it is not the music that is the problem. The video itself is NOT blocked - you can view it on a computer -- but when you try to view it on ipad/iphone the message says, "not available on this platform". Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing when sending a video from your iPhone.
When sending a video using email, iMessage, or MMS on your iPhone, the quality of the video will be reduced so that the message can be transmitted. If you need to share the video with a higher resolution, you can upload your video to YouTube, which will support the HD resolution:
When sharing your finished iMovie video via email, iMessage, or MMS (iPhone 4 or later), the Camera Roll scales down and compresses the video in order to improve upload performance. If you exported your movie from iMovie in HD resolution when sharing to YouTube, you can select whether to share a standard definition or HD version of the video.
Regardless of how you share your finished movie, the original full-resolution version remains in the Camera Roll, and you can transfer this version back to your computer when you connect your device. To do this, follow the guidelines in Copying personal photos and videos from iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer.
