Getting VoiceOver to read text

I have just begun to use VoiceOver. My real issue is that while I am able to navigate the cursor around my screen, I am not able to get VoiceOver to speak in the text or html content areas. I know that I have missed something very basic, but it has eluded me for several hours of looking through VoiceOver Help. What I want to use VoiceOver for primarily is reading text -- e-mails, articles, PDFs and Word documents. I have enough vision to see what is on the screen but any lengthy text is difficult and tiring for me to read, even with magnification.
I am working on an iMac G4.
Can anyone get me started?
What I would really love is a basic step by step guide, especially covering the preferences options.
Thanks,
Mary

Hello and welcome, Mary!
When you get to a "Text Content" or "HTML Content" box, you have to "interact with" it by pressing Ctrl-Option-Shift-Down Arrow. If it doesn't immediately start reading, press Ctrl-Option-A.
For a superb general introduction to VoiceOver, have a look at . For someone with useable sight, the keyboard layout with commands in colour on the Apple website is a very good way of finding all the possible functions quickly, and is available here. You can print it out as big as you like and stick it on the wall next to the computer!
Enjoy your iMac and VoiceOver!

How can I get VoiceOver to read two languages correctly? in a dual-language book (English and Spanish)? I've used the <lang> tag, but VoiceOver doesn't switch from reading in English to Spanish. Both languages are selected in Settings. Does VoiceOver have this capability?

  • VoiceOver to read text/content...how?

I am completely baffled about how to use VoiceOver...
What I want to do is have voiceover read the text of a IWork 09 Pages (or PDF) document. By text, I mean the content, the story, the paragraphs. I don't care about anything else.
How do you do this? When I start voice over, it always starts reading from the beginning of the document, not where my cursor is.
Command F5 would not turn on/off voice over, so I switched it to cmd5 and it works. why?
In pages, you can right click and choose to speak the highlighted text. This is differnt than voice over, right? It does not seem as good a quality.
VoiceOver mentions a voiceover cursor, but I don't see it and don't understand what it is?
    Thanks,
    bob

Actually, VoiceOver worked pretty well—and in many ways superior to Speak Text—under Leopard for reading documents out loud. With VoiceOver in Leopard, you were able to change pronunciations to words and even phrases to get them to pronounce correctly. Under Snow Leopard, I can't get VoiceOver to work with pronouncing certain phrases correctly; it only works on a word-by-word basis. There are times when it is necessary to put a phrase in context so VoiceOver would know whether to read a heteronym such as "read," as either "red" or "reed." That worked easily and well in Leopard. I can't make that work in Snow Leopard.
Also in Leopard, you could select all text—even long passages—and the entire piece would be read (red) back. In Snow Leopard, it will inexplicably squeak and stop reading until you mark the text again, at which point it will read another paragraph or two and stop. I'm sure there is way around this, but VoiceOver in Leopard required no learning curve. It was easy to use.
VoiceOver in Leopard was an easy, streamlined way to get text-to-speech. VoiceOver in Snow Leopard is not and makes me believe that this is not its intended use.

  • How to get motion to read text from file?

There has to be a way to do this. I have a large file of text (transcripts from a clip several minutes long) and I want to make subtitles using Motion.
How can I get Motion to read the file and create a text object with the sentence/line in the file, then move to the next one and do the same thing for the next line? Thus it would make a timeline with several objects of individual sentences of text. Anyone have some ideas how to do this?
    Thanks.

I was just playing around, and I think I figured out how to get what you want.  First, change the layout method for the generator to "Paragraph", you can find this in the layout section of the generator. In your document, use carraige returns (return key) to define each section of text.  To control the speed that each line appears, change the speed setting to custom, and then adjust the end keyframe.

  • Does any one know EXACTLY how to get siri to READ text messages out loud ?

How do I get siri to READ my text messages ? What do I "say " to siri ?

Just reading through this post and the best way to Reset SIRI is to go to Settings>General>Siri and then turn SIRI off. This erase's anything SIRI has learn't about you, all you have to do then is turn SIRI back on and it is reset. It is not necessary to reset the iPhone itself.
SIRI can only read back unread Txt messages, if you have opened a Txt message and already read it you can not have SIRI read it back to you. Don't forget SIRI is still in BETA and will take a little while while Apple tweek this technology.
    Cheers.

    Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5.   The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over.  This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1:  Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L.  This will jump you up to the address bar.  Start typing where you want to go.  i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
    Step 2:  Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website.  You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it.  If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website.  This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'.  You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3.  Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note:  If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip:  You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'.  The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads  The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R.  You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar.  To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac.  This will open up another window.  Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'.  If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

Control-Option-H-H.  (hit H twice)  is my best friend.  It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command.  Example:  You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command.   Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph.  It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph.  I believe there are three.

I have 3 Motorola M on my account, one updated correctly, and one has not been updated to the new version.  I have since taken the broken phone into the store, and they customer support people were not able to get it to load as well.  Pretty much told me there is nothing they can do to make it work again, But I can buy a new phone at full price since I still have 6 months on my contract.  Oh that's nice, I can see having to pay full price if the phone was broken by something I did, but not because of a software update. Its very frustrating and not right!

  • Can Voice over read text?

I have tried everything I know. I read all the comments here, I searched, I googled ,
How do you basically get this utility to work.
I found it in the Utilities folder. Its here. I dragged the voiceover icon onto the desktop.
I followed the suggestions in the help menu.
I highlighted the text I wanted read.
I made sure the cursor was at the beginning.
I used the short cut cmd. F5
Do I need to highlight the text I want read?
Do I need to select the text?
    Nothing seems to be working.
I just want to know the basics

    Hello moh2o!
VoiceOver is not a simple utility for reading text, though it does this extremely well. It is a full spoken interface for OS X, and enables blind users to use the Mac with keyboard commands only.
To learn to use it, leaving the VoiceOver utility where it is, as Tom suggested, simply activate VoiceOver using the command-F5 keystroke, then press Ctrl-Option-Command-F8. You will hear a tutorial which gives you the basics of handling your Mac with VoiceOver.
On the other hand, if you simply want to hear your Mac read a block of text, then use the Start Speaking command as Tom suggested, or set up the Speak Selected Text command as follows:
Go to System Preferences—>Speech. Click on the Text to Speech tab. Choose the System Voice you want, then check the Speak selected text checkbox. Use the Set Key… button to choose a keyboard shortcut to suit yourself, then quit. Subsequently, you can highlight a block of text, then press the shortcut and listen. Stop the output simply by repeating the same keystroke.
